Component: AIR BAGS
HYUNDAI IS RECALLING 393,308 MY 2006-2008 SONATA VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH AN ADVANCED AIR BAG SYSTEM WHICH FEATURES AN OCCUPANT CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM (OCS) IN THE RIGHT FRONT SEAT. THE PURPOSE OF THE OCS IS TO DISABLE THE RIGHT PASSENGER SEAT FRONT AIR BAG WHEN IT DETECTS THE PRESENCE OF A CHILD RESTRAINT SYSTEM OR SMALL CHILD IN THE RIGHT FRONT SEAT. THE RIGHT FRONT AIR BAG IS DISABLED TO PREVENT INJURIES TO A CHILD THAT MAY RESULT FROM A RIGHT FRONT AIR BAG INFLATION DURING A CRASH.
Risk: MISCLASSIFICATION OF A SMALL STATURE ADULT AS A CHILD IN THE RIGHT FRONT PASSENGER SEAT MAY CAUSE THE RIGHT FRONT AIR BAG TO NOT INFLATE IN AN ACCIDENT THAT MERITS AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT AND MAY RESULT IN INJURY TO THE RIGHT FRONT OCCUPANT.
Fix: DEALERS WILL VERIFY THAT THE OCS DOES NOT PROPERLY RECOGNIZE A PROPERLY SEATED ADULT OCCUPANT. AFTER VERIFICATION, DEALERS WILL REMOVE THE RIGHT FRONT SEAT CUSHION ASSEMBLY AND SHIP IT TO AN EVALUATION AND REPAIR FACILITY. THIS FACILITY WILL EVALUATE AND REPAIR OR REPROGRAM THE SEAT CUSHION AND OCS AS NECESSARY. THE RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN ON OR ABOUT MAY 26, 2008. OWNERS MAY CONTACT HYUNDAI AT 1-800-633-5151.

SABERSPORT IS RECALLING 16,270 COMBINATION CORNER AND BUMPER LAMP ASSEMBLIES OF VARIOUS PART NUMBERS SOLD FOR USE AS AFTERMARKET EQUIPMENT FOR VARIOUS PASSENGER VEHICLES. THESE HEADLAMPS FAIL TO CONFORM TO THE REQUIREMENTS OF FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 108, "LAMPS, REFLECTIVE DEVICES, AND ASSOCIATED EQUIPMENT." THESE LAMPS DO NOT CONTAIN THE REQUIRED AMBER SIDE REFLECTORS.
Risk: DECREASED LIGHTING VISIBILITY MAY RESULT IN A VEHICLE CRASH.
Fix: SABERSPORT WILL NOTIFY OWNERS AND OFFER A FULL REFUND FOR THE NONCOMPLIANT COMBINATION LAMPS. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON MAY 11, 2009. OWNERS MAY CONTACT SABERSPORT AT 1-909-598-7589.

Hyundai Motor Company (Hyundai) is recalling certain model year 2006-2009 Accent, model year 2007-2011 Azera, Sonata and Sante Fe,2006-2011 Tucson, 2009-2011 Elantra Touring, 2007-2010 Elantra, 2008-2011 Veracruz, 2009-2011 Genesis, 2010-2011 Genesis Coupe, 2007-2008 Entourage, and 2006-2008 Tiburon vehicles. Originally, in April 2013, Hyundai recalled 1,059,824 model year 2007-2009 Accent and Tucson, model year 2007-2010 Elantra, model year 2007-2011 Santa Fe, model year 2008-2009 Veracruz, model year 2010-2011 Genesis Coupe, and model year 2011 Sonata vehicles. In September 2013, Hyundai informed the agency that it was adding more vehicles to this campaign, representing an additional 652,512 units. The total number of vehicles being recalled is now 1,712,336. In the affected vehicles, the stop lamp switch may malfunction. A malfunctioning stop lamp switch may cause the brake lights to not illuminate when the brake pedal is depressed or may cause an inability to deactivate the cruise control by depressing the brake pedal. Additionally, a malfunctioning stop lamp switch may also result in intermittent operation of the push-button start feature, affect the operation of the brake transmission shift interlock feature, preventing the shifter from being moved out of the PARK position and cause the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) malfunction light to illuminate.
Risk: Failure to illuminate the stop lamps during braking or inability to disengage the cruise control could increase the risk of a crash. Additionally, when the ignition is in the 'ON' position, the transmission shifter may be able to be moved out of Park without first applying the brake. This may lead to unintentional movement of the car which may increase the risk of a crash.
Fix: Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will replace the stop lamp switch, free of charge. The safety recall began on April 22, 2013. Owners may contact Hyundai at 1-800-633-5151. Hyundai's recall campaign number is 110.

HYUNDAI-KIA IS RECALLING 4,085 REPLACEMENT HEADLAMP ASSEMBLIES SOLD FOR USE ON 2006-2008 SONATA AND AZERA VEHICLES. THESE HEADLAMP ASSEMBLIES MAY NOT HAVE BEEN ALIGNED PROPERLY AND FAIL TO CONFORM TO THE PHOTOMETRIC REQUIREMENTS OF FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 108, LAMPS, REFLECTIVE DEVICES, AND ASSOCIATED EQUIPMENT.
Risk: IMPROPER AIMING OF THE HEADLAMP MAY RESULT IN POOR VISIBILITY POSSIBLY RESULTING IN A VEHICLE CRASH.
Fix: HYUNDAI-KIA DEALERS HAVE BEEN NOTIFIED AND INSTRUCTED TO RETURN THEIR SUPPLY TO HYUNDAI MOTOR AMERICA. NONE OF THE HEADLAMPS WERE SOLD AS RETAIL. AS A RESULT, AN OWNER NOTIFICATION LETTER WILL NOT BE ISSUED.

Hyundai is recalling certain model year 2006-2010 Sonata vehicles manufactured March 1, 2005, through January 21, 2010; and model year 2006-2011 Azera vehicles manufactured September 27, 2005, through November 22, 2010 originally sold in, or currently registered in, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia, Wisconsin and the District of Columbia. Road salt and water can enter portions of the rear crossmember, leading to corrosion of the crossmember steel. This may lead to detachment of one of the rear control arms.
Risk: Control arm separation may suddenly change the rear wheel alignment, affecting the handling of the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
Fix: Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will repair or replace the crossmember assembly. The recall began on October 8, 2013. Owners may contact Hyundai Customer Care Center at 1-800-633-5151. Hyundai's recall number is 113.
Owner-Reported Issues (20 of 425)
Air Bags →4 issues
Your airbag warning light is on. You took your car to the dealer for a recall repair, but they wanted you to pay for a diagnostic test first before doing the recall work. You decided not to pay and the problem wasn't fixed. The manufacturer didn't offer any help. Resolving this will likely require a diagnostic scan to identify the airbag system fault, followed by whatever component replacement the recall specifies.

Your airbag warning light came on while driving. A mechanic found that the passenger-side occupancy sensor and occupant classification system had failed, which means your airbag system may not deploy correctly in a crash. The vehicle hasn't been repaired yet. You may need to replace the occupancy sensor and have the airbag control module checked or reprogrammed.

Your airbag warning light is on because the passenger weight sensor (part of the Occupant Classification System) is malfunctioning and flashing erratically even when no one is sitting in the passenger seat. Hyundai has a known service campaign (083) for 2006-2008 Sonatas to reprogram this system, but the dealer may tell you it's not an official recall since it's handled case-by-case. The fix will likely involve reprogramming or replacing the occupant classification system components.

Your airbag warning light is on, and a diagnostic test found that the occupant classification system mat (which tells your airbags how to deploy) needs to be replaced. This matches a known recall campaign for your vehicle. The repair hasn't been completed yet, and Hyundai hasn't been officially notified. The fix will involve replacing the occupant classification system mat.

Service Brakes →2 issues
Your brake pedal suddenly went all the way to the floor without warning while you were stopping in traffic, leaving you with almost no braking power. The brake warning light only came on after the pedal was already at the floor, with no prior signs of trouble. You were able to limp home by downshifting to second gear and using the parking brake, but this sudden loss of braking is a serious safety issue that needs immediate inspection.

Your 2008 Hyundai Sonata has an outstanding safety recall (Manufacturer Recall #110, NHTSA #13V113000) affecting the service brakes. You contacted Hyundai in July 2021 to arrange the recall repair at a dealership in Frankfurt, Germany, and were assigned a case number with assurances the repair part would be sent. Despite follow-up attempts and a December 2021 escalation call to Hyundai's executive office, you have not received updates or confirmation that the recall repair was completed. The fix will require Hyundai to supply and install the recalled brake component at an authorized dealership.

Visibility/wiper →2 issues
Your passenger sun visor suddenly dropped down and won't stay up, blocking your view of the road. The plastic tube that the visor pivots on has broken, causing it to hang straight down. If the same thing happens to the driver's side visor, it could obstruct your vision and create a safety hazard. The fix will likely involve replacing the broken visor assembly or the pivot mechanism.

Electrical System →1 issue
Your car caught fire while parked and turned off, without being driven or started by you. The fire department determined an electrical short circuit in the front of the vehicle caused the fire, which completely destroyed the car. This issue may involve faulty wiring, a damaged alternator, or a malfunctioning engine control module that needs to be inspected and replaced.

Air Bags,seats →1 issue
Your airbag warning light is on because the occupant classification sensor in the front passenger seat has failed. This is a known issue that Hyundai previously recalled under campaign 08V161000, but your vehicle's VIN wasn't included in that recall. Hyundai customer service told you they won't cover repairs under the existing recall, though a technician warned that leaving this unaddressed could cause injury or death in a collision. The repair will likely involve replacing the occupant classification sensor in the front passenger seat.

Electrical System,unknown Or Other,fuel/propulsion System →1 issue
Your car experienced a serious electrical issue where it started on its own, honked, and flashed lights while you were outside the vehicle—the smell of burning and sparks were reported. After the battery was disconnected to stop it, the car wouldn't start again. Now that it's been repaired and does start, your air conditioning and power windows don't work because fuses keep blowing out; the mechanic says replacing them causes the car to fail to start again, suggesting an underlying electrical short circuit.

Vehicle Speed Control, unknown Or Other, service Brakes →1 issue
When you shifted into reverse in a parking lot, your car suddenly accelerated to a high speed and wouldn't stop, even when braking. Your vehicle struck another car, a cart station, and a pickup truck before finally stopping from the impact. The brakes did not respond to stop the car during this incident.

Air Bags,structure,service Brakes →1 issue
Your front door handles on both the driver and passenger sides have fallen off, and your driver's side interior door handle has also detached, making that door completely stuck and inoperable. This creates a serious safety concern if you need to exit quickly in an emergency or accident. Additionally, your brake lights don't always illuminate when you brake, your airbag warning light is on, and your car sways in the back due to rust on the control arm.

Engine →1 issue
Your engine seized while driving at 60 mph on the highway and threw a connecting rod, causing oil to spray everywhere and obscuring your vision. After recently purchasing this used car, you're unable to find a replacement engine because many have failed. Hyundai has not issued a recall despite this being the same engine involved in other failures. A complete engine replacement or rebuild would be necessary to restore your vehicle to working condition.

Electrical System,air Bags →1 issue
Your car is displaying an error code B1448 related to the passenger airbag detection system in the front passenger seat. This system detects whether someone is sitting in the passenger seat and may not be working correctly. You'll likely see a warning light on your dashboard. The issue may require diagnostics to the seat sensor or wiring, or the passenger seat sensor pad itself may need replacement.

Power Train,unknown Or Other,engine →1 issue
Your 2008 Sonata has intermittent drivability issues that occur about every 6 months: the car runs rough with vibration, hesitates to accelerate, feels like it's braking without your foot on the brake pedal, and occasionally produces smoke from under the hood on the driver's side—but these symptoms disappear after the car cools down. The car also has an ongoing oil leak that was deemed minor by a technician. No check engine light appears, and fluids test normal when checked. The issue may be related to transmission gear selection or a sensor malfunction that requires comprehensive diagnostic testing to identify the root cause.

Steering,suspension →1 issue
Your car's rear end fishtails side-to-side when driving over bumps at various speeds. A mechanic found that the tie rod and control arms needed replacement, but the problem continued even after the repair was completed. This suggests a deeper suspension or steering issue that may require further diagnosis.

Unknown Or Other, forward Collision Avoidance →1 issue
Your forward collision avoidance system needs repair, but the dealership has failed to order the necessary part despite your appointment scheduled months in advance. After being told to call back in a week, you've tried contacting the dealership multiple times over six months without receiving callbacks, and other nearby dealers have also been unresponsive. The repair will likely involve replacing or servicing the forward collision avoidance system components.

Air Bags,seat Belts →1 issue
Your airbag warning light stays on continuously, and your passenger side seatbelt warning light blinks on and off intermittently. This appears to be a sensor malfunction, and similar issues have been reported on other 2008 Sonatas. The fix will likely involve diagnosing and replacing the faulty airbag or seatbelt sensor.

Steering,exterior Lighting →1 issue
Your headlights, brake lights, and flood lights seem to need replacement more frequently than in your previous cars. Additionally, your steering wheel makes a noise when you turn left, and this noise is getting progressively louder. The repair may involve inspecting the steering column components and checking bulb quality or electrical connections.
