Component: ENGINE

Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2019-2020 Elantra, 2019-2021 Kona and Veloster vehicles equipped with 2.0L Nu MPI engines. The piston oil rings may not have been properly heat-treated, which could result in engine damage.

Risk: A damaged engine may stall, increasing the risk of a crash. In addition, oil may leak onto hot exhaust components, increasing the risk of a fire.

Fix: Dealers will inspect and, if necessary, replace the engine, free of charge. In addition, Hyundai will deploy Piston Ring Noise Sensing System (PNSS) software. Owner notification letters were mailed August 24, 2021. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460.

Your 2020 Hyundai Elantra's check engine light came on while driving, and the vehicle had to be towed. The dealer diagnosed a piston oil ring failure that requires engine replacement. However, the dealer says Hyundai refused to cover this repair under the recall (Campaign 21V301000), so your vehicle remains unrepaired at the dealership. The engine likely needs to be replaced or rebuilt due to the failed piston rings.

Your engine failed just 2 months after purchase, and the dealership initially denied warranty coverage, claiming it was due to a missing drain plug despite no visible oil leak underneath the car. You paid out of pocket to replace the engine, but the same failure happened again about 4 years later with no low-oil warning or evidence of leaking. The repair will likely require engine replacement or extensive internal engine work to address the underlying failure cause.

Your engine is stalling unexpectedly and burning through oil faster than normal at 24,000 miles. Your knock sensor is also malfunctioning, which are both covered under Hyundai recall campaigns 974 and 203. However, the dealer refused to perform the recall work because your vehicle has a branded title, leaving you at risk of engine stalling while driving on the highway.

Your engine failed completely at 150,000 miles, which is outside your standard warranty period. Hyundai acknowledged your complaint but refused to cover the towing and diagnostic costs. The failure created a potential safety risk, including the possibility of stalling or loss of power while driving.

Your engine started making a loud noise and now the car won't start. You've noticed that Hyundai engines are prone to burning oil quickly, and the dashboard low oil warning light doesn't come on until the oil level is critically low. You're aware that some other Elantra models have a recall to address this issue, but yours hasn't been included.

Your engine is burning oil and gas, which is mixing into your engine oil. You're experiencing stalling and your check engine light is on. There's an open recall for this same issue on other Elantra models, but your car isn't included in that recall. The fix will likely involve diagnosing why fuel and oil are mixing, which could require replacing gaskets, fuel injectors, or other engine sealing components.

Your engine suddenly lost all power and shut down while driving after making an unusual noise from under the hood. Your car stopped on the side of the road and would not restart. The engine may need diagnostic inspection to identify the source of the noise and determine why it failed.

Your engine makes a ticking noise when you start it in cold weather. The ticking sound comes from inside the engine and occurs during cold starts. This may indicate an issue with engine components that need inspection and possible replacement.

Both of your headlights have completely stopped working, leaving you unable to see the road at night or be seen by other drivers. Hyundai has acknowledged the problem but stopped responding to your requests for a warranty repair, even though you're stranded far from home during bad weather. Getting your headlights working again will likely require replacing the headlight assemblies or addressing the underlying electrical failure.

Both of your headlights stopped working at the same time due to a known wiring and socket defect that Hyundai has documented in service bulletins. A dealer confirmed the lights were inoperative but refused to repair them or request warranty coverage, claiming the technical bulletin had expired. Your car is unsafe to drive at night without working headlights, and you should contact Hyundai customer service or seek a second opinion from another dealer.

Your headlights keep failing because the plastic gear that controls the high beam shutter melts from heat generated by the halogen bulbs, leaving you without high beams after about 18 months. The bulbs also burn out frequently (every 4 months), suggesting a possible electrical surge issue. Even though the dealer has replaced the headlights under recall, they installed the same faulty design, so you're stuck in a cycle of expensive repairs ($900-$2000 per headlight at the dealer). The manufacturer needs to redesign the headlight unit with better heat-resistant materials instead of just replacing faulty parts with identical faulty parts.

Your headlights strobe or flicker when you use the high beam setting, making them unusable and creating a safety hazard for you and oncoming traffic. You've reported this issue before with the same vehicle identification number, and you've found online reports of other 2020 Elantras experiencing the same problem. The dealer quoted over $200 just to diagnose the issue, though they would credit that fee toward any repair costs.

Your headlights won't stay on the high beam setting. When you turn on the high beams, they flicker rapidly on and off instead of staying steady, and this happens on both headlights at the same time. Two repair shops told you this is a known issue with your car model and that it requires specialized Hyundai equipment and expertise to fix properly.

Your car's transmission failed shortly after the dealership performed a transmission flush service. The dealership has refused to repair or replace the transmission, even though your vehicle is covered under Hyundai's Service Campaign 963 for CVT transmission issues. Your car has been held at the dealership for approximately six months despite complaints to Hyundai Corporate, the BBB, and the Georgia Attorney General's office. Resolving this will likely require Hyundai to honor the service campaign coverage and either repair or replace the transmission.

Your car was ticking and had low oil, so you got an oil change. Shortly after, your engine made a loud sound and shut off completely while you were driving. You didn't receive any warning lights about low oil or the need for an oil change before this happened. The engine failure could have been dangerous if you'd been driving faster or on a busy road.

Your 2020 Hyundai Elantra is displaying a P0420 error code related to the catalytic converter, which you believe is part of a recall. The warning light comes on frequently and disappears intermittently, and a dealer confirmed the issue but charged $2,000 for a sensor replacement. However, when you check your VIN, no recall appears in the system, even though you've found similar complaints online. You may need assistance getting the manufacturer to acknowledge this as a covered recall issue.

Your car's headlights have faulty solder connections that appear to have been done poorly at the factory. Your steering column makes a grinding noise, especially at low speeds. Hyundai and other shops have confirmed this is a known issue affecting 2020 Elantras that's covered under a recall, but your vehicle's VIN isn't included in that recall even though the dealership says they know exactly what's wrong. The dealership believes your VIN should be on the recall list so they could fix it at no charge.
