ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:ENGINE

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain model year 2015-2016 Lincoln MKC vehicles manufactured November 25, 2013, to January 25, 2016, and 2016 Ford Explorer vehicles manufactured October 20, 2014, to January 28, 2016. The affected vehicles are equipped with 2.3L GTDI engines and engine block heaters. These engine block heaters have elements that may overheat while plugged in.

Fix: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will replace the engine block heater, free of charge. Dealers will also inspect and replace the electrical cord, as necessary. The recall began on May 18, 2016. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 16S14. Note: Owners should not use the engine block heater until the vehicle has been remedied.

At around 50,000 miles the Turbo on the engine was leaking oil. Dealer replaced the turbo and kept the part. It needed to be replaced to avoid a catastrophic failure of the turbo which in turn could cause severe engine oil loss resulting in engine failure and oil contamination of the catalytic converters O2 sensors and possibly a car fire.

The Duratec V6 engine in many models of Ford including Explorer 2011-2019 has a major design flaw in that the water pump is INSIDE the engine and fails frequently and abruptly. When it fails, the coolant immediately floods the engine and mixes with motor oil and the engine seizes immediately it could be in traffic in an intersection or anywhere. This should have been recalled.

Upon stronger than usual acceleration or at highway speeds or both, the smell of exhaust can be detected in the cabin. Under hard acceleration, the smell of rotten eggs becomes very strong in the cabin. After trips longer than an hour, with AC or heat running (no open windows), I have become very ill, with fearsome headache, nausea, lethargy, and gastrointestinal distress.

We experience a horrible smell of exhaust fumes whenever we first turn our vehicle on. It is extremely noticeable and can clearly be traced back to the exhaust system as there is no odor when the vehicle is turned off. This is dangerous as large amounts of co or co2 can be deadly especially in enclosed area.

The vehicle was being driven at approximately 40 MPH when the engine went to idle. A wrench icon showed on the dash and the engine would idle, but when the gas pedal was depressed, the car would not accelerate whatsoever. The problem is a defective throttle body and the issue is widely reported as a common occurrence.
