I WAS DRIVING ON A CITY STREET AND GOT INTO A ACCIDENT. TOTALED MY VEHICLE AND MY AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY

THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE CITY OBSERVED A CURFEW WHEREBY THE CORONER'S REPORT STATED THAT 'DEATH WAS CAUSED BY A MULTIPLE BLUNT FORCE INJURY TO THE HEAD". THE STREET LIGHTS WERE TURNED OFF FROM 12 MIDNIGHT TO 5 AM. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE CRASH MIGHT HAVE OCCURRED AT ABOUT 3AM. THERE WAS A SHORT IN THE TRAILER BRAKE AND ALARM WHICH CAUSED THE ENTIRE CAR TO SHUT DOWN WOULD NOT START UNTIL BATTERY CABLES WERE REMOVED FOR A FEW MINUTES THEN VEHICAL STARTED BUT EVERY TIME YOU CLOSE A DOOR OR ANY VIBRATION THE ALARM GOES OFF.

THE RIGHT/LEFT SIDE AIRBAGS DEPLOYED WITHOUT ANY WARNING. I WAS ABLE TO GET TO THE SHOULDER AND CALL AAA. I WAS TOWED TO THE LANDMARK FORD SERVICE CENTER.
BOTH SIDE AIR BAGS DEPLOYED DRIVING ON INTERSTATE AT 55 MPH WITH NO APPARENT CAUSE. THE CAR WAS NOT INVOLVED IN AN ACCIDENT AND THERE WAS NO OTHER DAMAGE TO THE VEHICLE.THE FRONT AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. I WAS ABLE TO GET TO THE SHOULDER OF THE FREEWAY AND CALLED ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE TO HAVE THE CARE TOWED. THE EXPLOSION WAS QUITE TRAUMATIC AND IT TOOK ME SEVERAL SECONDS TO REALIZE JUST WHAT HAD HAPPENED.

AROUND 1015AM ON SATURDAY JULY 25, 2015, I WAS IN THE PROCESS OF ATTACHING MY BOAT TRAILER TO THE HITCH. AFTER OPENING MY DRIVERS DOOR SEVERAL TIMES, CHECKING ON THE HITCH POSITION, I PUT MY VEHICLE IN PARK, GOT OUT, SHUT THE DOOR, AND THEN HEARD A LOUD SOUND THAT SOUNDED LIKE A GUNSHOT. I TURNED AROUND AND SAW THAT MY DRIVERS SIDE CURTAIN AIRBAGS HAD DEPLOYED FOR NO REASON AT ALL. THE LEFT REAR SEAT AIRBAG ALSO DEPLOYED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT MOVING AND DID NOT SUFFER ANY SIDE IMPACT WHATSOEVER. I BELIEVE THIS IS A SAFETY DEFECT DUE TO THE HAZARDOUS CONDITION THAT IT COULD CREATE IF A DRIVER IS DRIVING AND IT INFLATES FOR NO REASON AT ALL. THIS COULD POTENTIALLY CAUSE THE DRIVER TO HIT ANOTHER VEHICLE OR GO OFF THE ROAD AND POTENTIALLY KILL SOMEONE. I KNOW OF TWO OTHER CASES FILES ON CARCOMPLAINTS.COM OF THIS SAME ISSUE.

THE OBSTRUCTION OF THE DEPLOYED AIRBAG CREATED A COMPROMISED OR VISIONARY IMPAIRMENT FROM MY WINDSHIELD'S FIELD OF VIEW, CAUSING ME TO HAVE IMPACT WITH ANOTHER VEHICLE. AFTER IMPACT OF FIRST VEHICLE, THE PASSENGER SIDE AIRBAG DEPLOYED., THEN THERE WAS A SECONDARY IMPACT WITH ANOTHER VEHICLE. IN ADDITION TO THE AIRBAG BRAKING MY NOSE, TWO PIECES OF SHRAPNEL WERE EJECTED FROM THE INSIDE OF THE DEPLOYED AIRBAG, ONE HITTING ME IN THE LEFT SIDE MID CHEST/ABDOMEN, THE OTHER TO THE DISTAL PORTION OF MY LEFT FOREARM. THE PROJECTED SHRAPNEL TORE THROUGH A DOWN COAT, SWEATER AND TWO SHIRTS CAUSING INJURY AND 2ND DEGREE BURNS TO MY CHEST/ABDOMEN AND FOREARM. THE INJURIES OF THE OTHER VEHICLES INHABITANTS ARE UNKNOWN AT THIS TIME.

I COMPLAINED TO THE SERVICE MANAGER THAT I FEEL I SHOULD NOT HAVE TO PAY FOR THESE REPAIRS AS THIS PROBLEM OCCURRED PREVIOUSLY WHILE UNDER WARRANTY AND THEIR PREVIOUS REPAIR SHOULD HOLD SOME GUARANTEE. RECENTLY THE AIR BAG WARNING LIGHT CAME ON INDICATING A PROBLEM WITH THE AIR BAG SYSTEM. ALSO, THE DRIVER'S SEAT BELT WOULD NOT RETRACT WHEN THE DRIVER EXITED THE VEHICLE. THE ONBOARD COMPUTER INDICATED A CODE OF 33 IN MEMORY. THIS INDICATED THAT THE MECHANISM UNDER BOTH FRONT SEATS WAS FAULTY. THIS PROBLEM WOULD HAVE CAUSED THE AIR BAGS TO DEPLOY UNNECESSARILY OR NOT DEPLOY AT ALL. THE FAULTY SEAT BELT RETRACTOR WOULD NOT HAVE PREVENTED THE DRIVER FROM BEING THROWN FORWARD IN THE EVENT OF A COLLISION. THE WARNING LIGHT WAS INTERMITTENT AT FIRST AND EVENTUALLY STAYED ON SO THERE WAS 55,000 MILES RECORDED WHEN I FINALLY TOOK THE VEHICLE TO OUR DEALERSHIP. THE OWNER'S MANUAL REVEALED THAT THE SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM (SRS) IS WARRANTED FOR 5YEARS/50,000 MILES, SO I REALIZE THAT IT WAS BEYOND THE WARRANTY PERIOD. HOWEVER, THIS IS MY CONCERN AND COMPLAINT. THE SRS IS PROBABLY THE MOST IMPORTANT SAFETY SYSTEM IN A VEHICLE AND SHOULD NOT REQUIRE THESE TYPES OF REPAIRS JUST 6 MONTHS AND 5,000 MILES AFTER THE WARRANTY EXPIRES. THIS SYSTEM SHOULD LAST FOR THE LIFE OF A VEHICLE UNLESS THE VEHICLE IS INVOLVED IN A COLLISION. NO ONE SHOULD HAVE TO BE CONCERNED THAT THEIR SRS SYSTEM WILL FAIL AFTER THE WARRANTY EXPIRES. I AM NOT A MECHANICAL ENGINEER, BUT THESE PARTS MUST NOT HAVE BEEN MANUFACTURED PROPERLY. IF THEY WERE, THEY WOULD NOT HAVE FAILED. AS WAS STATED ABOVE, THIS EXPLORER WAS TOTALLY REDESIGNED AND SENT TO THE DEALER SHOWROOMS PRIOR TO THE START OF THE 2002 MODEL YEAR. WERE THINGS OVERLOOKED OR NOT DONE PROPERLY JUST TO RUSH THIS TOTALLY REDESIGNED EXPLORER TO THE DEALER SHOWROOMS? IF THIS WAS THE CASE, SHOULD THERE BE A RECALL FOR THIS MODEL YEAR IN ORDER TO CHECK THIS PROBLEM AND ENSURE THERE ARE NO SAFETY CONCERNS? THE COST OF THESE REPAIRS IS THE MINOR ISSUE OF MY COMPLAINT. THE MAJOR ISSUE IS THE SAFETY OF THE DRIVER AND PASSENGERS. THERE WAS AN ACCIDENT. HIT ANOTHER CAR AT ABOUT 40 MILES AN HOUR AND THE FRONT DRIVERS AND PASSENGER AIRBAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. THERE WERE TWO INJURED. THE FRAME WASN'T BENT AND THE ENGINE WAS OKAY. WHAT SAVED THE PASSENGERS WAS AN ADD-ON BUMPER GUARD I HAD ON THE FRONT. TRUCK WAS TOWED TO A FORD DEALERSHIP AND THE SERVICE MANGER SAID THE SAME THING ABOUT THE BUMPER GUARD. *JB
I BOUGHT A 2002 FORD EXPLORER EDDIE BAUER IN NOV 2002. AROUND OCT 2005 MY AIRBAG LIGHT CAME ON AND I WAS DUE FOR AN INSPECTION. I TOOK IT INTO A FORD DEALERSHIP AND THEY "DIAGNOSED" IT AS A FAULTY SEAT BELT...THE SEAT BELT WORKED FINE, IT EVEN CONTINUED TO LOCK-UP DURING MODERATE BRAKING. THIS COST ME OVER $300. NOT A MONTH WENT BY AND THE AIRBAG LIGHT CAME ON AGAIN. I CALLED THE FORD DEALER, EXPLAINED THE PROBLEM AND THEY TOLD ME THAT IF IT WAS DETERMINED IT WAS A "NEW" PROBLEM I WOULD BE CHARGED FOR THAT EXPENSE AS WELL. AIRBAG LIGHT CAME ON DASHBOARD, THUS DISABLING AIRBAGS IN VEHICLE. THE FORD DEALER SUPPOSEDLY REPAIRED THE SENSOR. LESS THAN ONE YEAR LATER, THE SAME ISSUE RECURRED, WITH THE SAME DIAGNOSTIC CODE, AND THE DEALER IS REFUSING TO HONOR THE REPAIR WARRANTY. AIR BAGS ARE NOW DISABLED. *JB

COST TO FIX, $467.00, CALLED THE FORD CO & THEY SAID AIRBAG SYSTEM WAS NOT UNDER WARRANTY & THAT THERE WERE NO RECALLS. FIRST, I AM WONDERING WHY THEY DIDN'T DISCOVER THIS PROBLEM ON THE PRIOR TWO OCCASIONS AND SECONDLY, I HAVE SINCE DISCOVERED THAT A CO-WORKER HAS ALSO HAD TO HAVE HER FORD ESCAPE SERVICED 4 TO 6 TIMES FOR THE SAME PROBLEM. APRIL 04, THE AIRBAG LIGHT CAME ON FLASHING 3 TIMES (3 BLINKS EACH TIME) AND THEN WOULD REMAIN ON. I TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP HERE AT FREEPORT JET WASH WHILE THE CAR WAS STILL UNDER WARRANTY AND THE WARRANTY WAS FINISHING IN JUNE. WHEN I TOOK THE CAR IN THEY HOOKED IT UP TO THE COMPUTER THEN SIMPLY SAID WE HAVE RESETTED THE CONTROL SYSTEM IN THE CAR AND IF THE LIGHT COMES BACK ON TO BRING IT BACK!~~~ WELL, DIDN'T LAST TOO LONG AND IT CAME BACK ON BUT THIS IS A COUPLE WEEKS LATER AND NOW THEY TELL ME MY WARRANTY IS UP BUT I TOLD THEM THEY WERE AWARE OF THIS BEFORE THE WARRANTY EXPIRED - LONG STORY SHORT THEY CHANGED IT AT NO COST TO ME AND SAID FORD APPROVED IT TO BE FIXED UNDER WARRANTY. THE EMS DRIVER ESTIMATED IMPACT AT 40 MPH. MY VEHICLE SUSTAINED $6600+ IN DAMAGES TO THE FRONT END. NEITHER THE DRIVER NOR PASSENGER SIDE AIRBAG DEPLOYED. THE EMS DRIVER AND THE WRECKER SAID GIVEN THE DAMAGE TO THE FRONT END OF MY VEHICLE THE AIR BAGS SHOULD HAVE DEPLOYED. THE EMS DRIVER ALSO SAID IT WAS TYPICAL OF A FORD TO HAVE THE AIR BAGS MALFUNCTION. I SUSTAINED NECK AND LOW BACK INJURIES INCLUDING DAMAGE TO 4 DISC IN MY SPINE ACCORDING TO THE MRI REPORT. MY DAUGHTER SUSTAINED INJURIES TO HER RIGHT SHOULDER, RADIOLOGICAL TESTING IS SCHEDULED FOR LATER THIS MONTH TO DETERMINE THE CAUSE OF HER PAIN AND LOSS OF MOTION. SHE HAS ALSO SUFFERED WITH LOW BACK PAIN. I ASKED THE MECHANIC RESPONSIBLE FOR THE REPAIRS ON MY VEHICLE AT THE DEALERSHIP WHERE I BOUGHT THE VEHICLE ABOUT THE AIR BAGS AND WAS NOT GIVEN MUCH OF AN ANSWER. HE BASICALLY SAID THE DAMAGE DID NOT GO FAR ENOUGH INTO THE ENGINE AREA FOR THE SENSORS TO PICK UP THE CRASH. GIVEN THE DAMAGE TO MY FRONT END AND THE NEED FOR REPLACEMENT OF MULTIPLE PARTS UNDER THE HOOD OF MY CAR AND THE INJURIES SUSTAINED I DID NOT FIND THIS TO BE AN ACCEPTABLE ANSWER.*AK

THE WEATHER WAS PERFECT, THE ROADWAYS WERE PERFECT, THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE CAR, THE AIR BAGS DEPLOYED, HE WASN'T SPEEDING. HOWEVER, HE DROVE OFF THE SIDE OF THE HIGHWAY, OVER CORRECTED IT TO GAIN CONTROL AND FISH-TAILED. WITNESSES SAY THAT IT LOOKED LIKE HE HAD CONTROL AGAIN AND THEN IT ROLLED, KILLING HIM. HIM AND THE PASSENGER WERE BOTH WEARING SEAT BELTS; HOWEVER, THE TOP CRUSHING HIM IN IS WHAT KILLED HIM. THESE VEHICLES LIKE OTHER SUV'S HAVE A HIGH ROLL-OVER RATE YET PEOPLE KEEP BUYING THEM. SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE TO PREVENT ANY OTHER FAMILIES FROM EXPERIENCING THIS TRAGEDY. NOW OBVIOUSLY WHATEVER HAPPENS WON'T BRING ME BACK MY BROTHER BUT I'D HATE TO SEE THIS HAPPEN TO SOMEONE ELSE.
