highFUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
Filed: Jan 2026

Your car spills gasoline when you fill up the tank. Once the tank gets close to full, the pump clicks off as normal, but then a large amount of fuel gushes out of the filler opening. This happens every time you fill up to a complete tank, and you have to stop the pump manually before it reaches full to prevent the spill. While you've seen recall notices for this issue on other 2006 Dodge Durangos, yours hasn't been included in a recall. The fix will likely involve inspecting and possibly replacing the fuel filler neck or anti-overflow valve that's supposed to stop fuel from backing up.

NHTSA #: 11709685
highFUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
Filed: Feb 2023

When you fill your gas tank completely, gasoline sprays into the air for 2-3 seconds after the pump shuts off. This creates a fire hazard, especially if other vehicles are nearby at the pump. The fix will likely involve inspecting or replacing the fuel filler neck and its anti-overflow valve.

NHTSA #: 11509165
highFUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
Filed: Nov 2021

Every time you fill your gas tank, fuel violently sprays out of the filler neck—sometimes a half-gallon or more—onto you, the car's side, and the ground, even when filling slowly. This is a known issue affecting multiple Durango owners and was reportedly recalled on 2005 models, but your 2006 is experiencing the same problem. The fix likely involves replacing or adjusting the fuel filler neck assembly to allow proper venting during refueling.

NHTSA #: 11440291
highFUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
Filed: Dec 2019

Your gas tank overfills when you're trying to fill it at the pump. The pump's automatic shutoff isn't working properly, so gas continues flowing into the tank and spills out onto your vehicle and the ground even when the tank is full. This is a fuel system issue where the fill-stop mechanism needs inspection and likely repair or replacement.

Filed: Feb 2021

Your engine randomly shuts off while you're driving, and when it does, the steering wheel locks up. This has happened several times, and while you've been able to restart the vehicle and move it to safety, it creates a dangerous situation on the road.

NHTSA #: 11396400

Filed: Aug 2021

Your 4WD lock engaged and won't disengage from 4WD mode. Based on testing, the problem appears to be electrical rather than mechanical. You'll need a Chrysler dealer with their specific diagnostic scanner to clear the codes and identify the exact electrical fault in the transfer case system.

NHTSA #: 11429082

Filed: Jan 2021

Your 4WD service light turns on randomly while driving at highway speeds, and your truck sometimes shifts into 4x4 mode on its own without you pressing the button — you can feel it engaging, especially when turning. You may also hear the transfer case motor making noise for a couple seconds when you open the door or press the key fob. The trouble code C1404 was pulled, indicating an electronic issue with the 4WD system. The fix will likely involve diagnosing and repairing the transfer case motor or its electronic control module.

Filed: Mar 2021

Your vehicle wouldn't start while parked, and when it finally did start, multiple warning lights flashed on the dashboard including an unknown red warning light. Two different dealerships diagnosed the problem as a faulty instrument cluster and recommended replacement, but the issue continued even after one repair attempt. The warning lights and starting problems keep coming back.

Your liftgate opens with the key fob but immediately drops back down on its own, creating a safety hazard if someone is loading groceries—you need a second person to hold it up. Additionally, your left sliding door won't lock or unlock with the key fob like your other doors do, requiring manual operation. A couple years ago, the left sliding door wouldn't close electronically or manually, forcing you to drive home in the rain with it wide open. The liftgate support struts and the left door lock mechanism likely need replacement to resolve these issues.

criticalSTEERING
Filed: Oct 2021

Your steering rack and pinion assembly has metal transfer pipes that rust out when exposed to road salt, causing power steering fluid to leak and resulting in a complete loss of power steering assist. This is a design flaw that affects multiple 2006 Durangos, and the entire rack and pinion assembly must be replaced since the pipes cannot be repaired individually. The fix will involve replacing the complete steering rack and pinion assembly with a new or rebuilt unit.

NHTSA #: 11437762
highSTEERING
Filed: Mar 2020

Your steering system stopped working when you started the vehicle, requiring extra effort to turn the wheel and maneuver. This happened at around 230,000 miles. The issue may involve the power steering pump, belt, or hydraulic system that helps make steering easier.

Air Bags1 issue
criticalAIR BAGS
CrashFiled: Apr 2024

You were in a collision where another vehicle merged in front of you and you hit its rear end, but your airbags didn't deploy even though the airbag warning light was on. After researching the issue, you discovered this matches a known recall (Campaign 15V313000) affecting your vehicle. The airbags are a critical safety feature that should have activated during the crash to protect you.

criticalSERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC
Filed: Nov 2020

While driving at 30 mph in snow, you pressed the brake pedal and heard an unusual noise, then temporarily lost braking power — though it came back on its own and you reached your destination safely. No warning lights appeared on your dashboard. This happened at around 160,000 miles, and you believe it may be related to a known brake system issue affecting your vehicle model. The brake system may need to be inspected for hydraulic leaks, air in the lines, or failing components that could cause temporary loss of braking power.

FireFiled: Jan 2020

Your vehicle caught fire and became completely engulfed in flames while parked, with the front end charred and burned out. The fire department extinguished the flames, but no injuries occurred. The cause of the fire hasn't been determined yet, and you'll need to have the vehicle towed and inspected by a dealer or mechanic to understand what ignition source or fuel system component failed.

highPOWER TRAIN,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
Filed: Jan 2022

Your truck's check engine light is on, and the engine loses power when you accelerate, sometimes nearly stalling. Your transmission solenoid assembly has been replaced, and your radiator has cracked and is leaking coolant. Fixing these issues will likely involve diagnosing the engine sensors, replacing the transmission solenoid, and either sealing or replacing the radiator.

Filed: Jun 2021

Your vehicle may suddenly stop running and shut off the fuel pump, leaving you stranded even though you have a full tank of gas. This is caused by a faulty computer module (TIPM/PCM) that controls the fuel system. The dealer can fix this by installing a relay bypass to restore fuel pump operation.

Your car is losing electrical power while you're driving, which causes you to lose power steering control. Your 4-wheel drive system engages and disengages on its own, your windshield wipers work intermittently, your navigation system turns on and off unexpectedly, and you're hearing popping sounds from the rear of the vehicle. This likely involves diagnosing and repairing the electrical system to restore stable power distribution throughout the vehicle.
