NHTSA Campaign: 13V001000

Component: STEERING:COLUMN LOCKING:ANTI-THEFT DEVICE

General Motors (GM) is recalling certain model year 2013 Cadillac Escalade, Escalade ESV, and Escalade EXT; Chevrolet Avalanche, Express, Silverado HD, Silverado LD, Suburban, and Tahoe; and GMC Savana, Sierra HD, Sierra LD, Yukon, and Yukon XL vehicles, manufactured between November 7, 2012, through December 18, 2012, for failing to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 102, "Transmission Shift Lever Sequence, Starter Interlock, and Transmission Braking Effect", and FMVSS No. 114, "Theft Protection and Rollaway Prevention." The vehicles may have been built with a fractured park lock cable or a malformed steering column lock actuator gear in the lock module assembly.

Risk: As a result, the vehicle may shift from Park with the ignition key removed or the ignition key in the OFF position. The vehicle may also shift out of Park without application of the brake pedal while the key is off. Either of these scenarios may cause the vehicle to roll away after the driver has exited the vehicle, resulting in a possible vehicle crash and/or injury.

Fix: GM will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the affected vehicles and replace the steering column as necessary, free of charge. The recall began on January 21, 2013. Chevrolet owners may call 1-800-630-2438. Cadillac owners may call 1-866-982-2339. GMC owners may call 1-866-996-9463.

In the affected vehicles, the chassis electronic module may be internally contaminated, resulting in an electrical short.

Risk: If the module experiences an electrical short, the vehicle could stall, increasing the risk of a crash.

Fix: GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the chassis electronic module, free of charge. The recall began on December 26, 2014. Owners may contact GM customer service at 1-800-521-7300 (Buick), 1-800-458-006 (Cadillac), 1-800-222-1020 (Chevrolet), and 1-800-462-8782 (GMC). GM’s number for this recall is 14515.

Your dashboard is cracked and rattles loudly while driving, making sounds like pieces are breaking apart. When you hit bumps, you can see the dashboard move and bounce, which could pose a safety risk if airbags deploy in an accident—the force could break the dashboard further and send sharp plastic pieces toward passengers. Fixing this will likely require dashboard replacement or repair of the cracked panels.

Your dashboard has developed cracks above the instrument panel and near the passenger airbag. Your front driver's door pull handle is also broken. The dealer says neither issue has been recalled, but warns that if the airbag canister recall is performed before addressing dash cracks, the recall work itself could cause additional dashboard damage — and you'd be responsible for those costs. The dashboard appears to be made from brittle material that cracks easily under normal use.

Your dashboard has developed multiple cracks starting in 2018, despite regular cleaning and use of a sunshade. The cracks seem to spread, particularly around the speaker area where the dash appears to lack proper support structure. The dashboard will likely need to be replaced or professionally repaired to address the structural weakness causing the cracking.

Your Tahoe is under a recall for an airbag safety issue, but your local dealership has repeatedly refused to replace the faulty airbag despite your multiple calls to GM customer service. You keep receiving recall notices, but the dealership continues to give you the runaround instead of fixing the problem. Resolving this will require the dealership to install a replacement airbag assembly as part of the recall service.

Your airbag warning light came on while driving at 75 mph. Later, when you started the vehicle at a rest stop, the driver's side curtain airbag and passenger airbags deployed on their own without any crash or impact. You sustained head and scalp injuries and lost consciousness. The vehicle was declared a total loss. This happened at 137,251 miles and relates to NHTSA recall campaign 21V054000.

Your airbag needs replacement under warranty, but the dealer says replacing it will damage your car's interior trim and parts. The dealer also says replacement trim pieces aren't available and they won't be responsible for fixing any damage caused during the airbag replacement. You've refused the warranty work until you can find a dealer willing to do the job without damaging your interior. The fix would involve replacing the airbag unit and potentially repairing or replacing damaged interior trim pieces.
