NHTSA Campaign: 15V011000

Component: TRAILER HITCHES

Southeast Toyota Distributors, LLC (SET) is recalling certain model year 2013-2015 Toyota Rav4 vehicles manufactured June 1, 2013, to December 29, 2014, and equipped with an accessory trailer light module. The software within the module may incorrectly detect an electrical short and preventively turn off the electrical current and the trailer lights.

Risk: If the system incorrectly detects an electrical short and turns off the trailer lights while the trailer is being towed at night, there is an increased risk of a crash.

Fix: SET will notify owners, and dealers will replace the trailer light module with a new unit with corrected software, free of charge. The recall began on March 17, 2015. Owners may contact SET customer service at 1-866-405-4226. SET's number for this recall is SET-15A.

NHTSA Campaign: 23V734000

Component: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:12V/24V/48V BATTERY

Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2013-2018 RAV4 vehicles. Certain replacement 12-volt batteries may not fit properly in the battery tray, allowing the battery to move and contact the hold-down bracket, possibly causing a short circuit.

Risk: A battery short circuit increases the risk of a fire.

Fix: Dealers will replace the battery clamp sub-assembly, battery tray, and positive terminal cover, free of charge. Owner letters were mailed December 27, 2024, to 2013-2014 RAV4 owners. Additional owner notification letters will be mailed in phases, phase 2 will begin on May 14, 2025, and phase 3 in late July 2025. Owners may contact Toyota's customer service at 1-800-331-4331. Toyota's numbers for this recall are 23TB13 and 23TA13.

While driving at 35 mph, your husband noticed smoke coming from under the hood. When he pulled into a parking lot to check, he discovered the battery compartment was on fire, which he extinguished by hand and sustained minor burns. FireFiled: Nov 2024

Your 2013 RAV4's 12-volt battery caught fire while the vehicle was parked and running, which you were able to extinguish. This is related to an open recall (NHTSA Campaign 23V734000) for electrical system issues, but the replacement parts weren't available at the time. You replaced the battery yourself, but the dealer never diagnosed or fully repaired the underlying electrical problem that caused the fire.

You discovered a serious mileage discrepancy on your 2013 Toyota RAV4 after purchase. The odometer showed 89,704 miles when you bought it, but the vehicle registration revealed the actual mileage was 251,351 miles — a difference of over 161,000 miles. This suggests the odometer may have been tampered with or rolled back. You may want to consult with a lawyer about odometer fraud, as this is illegal and affects your vehicle's true value and condition.

Your Toyota dealership is asking you to pay $337 for a battery recall repair, which should typically be covered at no cost under a recall. The dealership initially told you the battery wasn't available, then provided this quote. You may want to contact Toyota directly to confirm whether this battery recall should be performed for free.

You received a recall notice for your 2013 Toyota RAV4's electrical system, but the required repair part wasn't available from the manufacturer. Your 2013 RAV4 is subject to a recall (NHTSA Campaign 23V734000) for an electrical system issue, but the replacement part wasn't available when you tried to get it fixed. You've been waiting longer than expected for the manufacturer to make the part available, and you're frustrated about having to pay for a repair upfront and then seek reimbursement. The underlying part distribution issue needs to be resolved so you can complete the recall repair.

Your 2013 RAV4 has an ongoing electrical system recall that remained unresolved for over a year. Toyota has agreed to fix the recall issue but is requiring you to replace your car's battery as a condition of the repair, even though your current battery is working fine — and they're charging an extra $250 for this replacement. The recall repair will likely involve electrical system components and possibly battery connections or charging system work.

Your Toyota performed a recall repair (23v-734) that required replacing your battery with a different size to fit a new battery tray. The dealer charged you $300 for parts and labor instead of performing the recall for free, and they didn't return your original battery. You're requesting full reimbursement for this cost.

Large pieces of paint peeled off your hood while driving and hit your windshield, blocking your visibility. This happened at 120,000 miles, and Toyota didn't offer any assistance when you reported it. The hood paint may need to be stripped and repainted, or the hood itself may need replacement if the damage is severe.

Your car's roof paint is peeling and flaking off in multiple areas, with chunks of paint falling onto the road while driving—creating a safety hazard. The bare metal underneath is beginning to rust and damage the roof's structural integrity. You've contacted Toyota twice about this issue, but they've told you to handle repairs yourself at a dealer, even though Toyota had previously addressed a known paint defect on this model in pearl white and offered a limited repair program that has now expired.

Your car's paint and clear coat are peeling and flaking off on multiple body panels without any impact or weather-related cause. The problem has gotten worse over time and is exposing bare metal underneath, which can lead to rust and corrosion. Toyota has acknowledged this is a known manufacturing defect affecting certain vehicles and offers a Customer Support Program to address it. Fixing this typically involves sanding, priming, and repainting the affected panels.

Filed: Mar 2025

Your 2013 RAV4's paint is peeling off in large sections on the hood, roof, and doors, exposing bare metal underneath. This creates several concerns: sun glare on the hood can obstruct your view of the road, exposed metal will rust over time and could weaken structural components, paint flakes are flying off at highway speeds and could hit other vehicles, and the uneven surface makes your car harder for other drivers to see, especially at night. Addressing this will likely require a professional repaint of the affected areas after treating any rust that has formed.

Engine1 issue

Filed: Oct 2025

Your engine is shutting off without warning while driving on streets and highways—it's happened 9 times in two days at all speeds, including 70 mph on the freeway. Your car is otherwise in excellent condition with recent maintenance (new battery, oil change, air filter, brake work), no warning lights on, and no trouble codes. The engine stalls unpredictably with no symptoms beforehand, creating a serious safety hazard. The fix will likely require a mechanic to diagnose why the engine is losing power using diagnostic equipment, and may involve fuel system components, ignition system parts, or an engine computer issue.

Power Train1 issue

Filed: Jan 2025

Your car shudders significantly when accelerating or cruising between 35-45 mph, and the vibration has gotten worse over time. The shaking is now severe enough to cause erratic steering, and you experienced the vehicle drifting across the center line into oncoming traffic before you could regain control by accelerating past 45 mph. Toyota is aware this is caused by a faulty torque converter, but there was no official recall—only an extended warranty offer that you weren't notified about, so you missed the window to have it replaced under warranty.

Your RAV4 was involved in a crash at 35 MPH with severe front-end damage, but the airbags failed to deploy. You sustained serious injuries including cervical fractures, a fractured sternum, and rib and chest injuries as a result. While driving at 50 mph, your sunroof suddenly exploded with a loud sound, sending shattered glass onto the closed sunroof shade. The dealer replaced the sunroof and repaired the vehicle. Filed: Jan 2025

Your car's roof and front side panels are experiencing significant paint peeling that started in January 2025, with at least a 2-foot section where paint has completely come off. The dealer confirmed excessive paint peeling but declined to repair it, and Toyota customer care has denied your claim despite a previous recall for this issue. Without protection from the missing paint, your car's metal will rust and potentially become unsafe. Fixing this will likely require professional repainting or panel replacement to prevent rust and corrosion damage.
