Component: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION
This defect can affect the safe operation of the airbag system. Until this recall is performed, customers should remove all items from their key rings, leaving only the ignition key. The key fob (if applicable), should also be removed from the key ring. General Motors LLC (GM) notified the agency on July 3, 2014, that they are recalling 5,877,718 model year 2000-2005 Chevrolet Impala and Monte Carlo, 1997-2003 Chevrolet Malibu, 2004-2005 Malibu Classic, 1999-2004 Oldsmobile Alero, 1998-2002 Oldsmobile Intrigue, 1999-2005 Pontiac Grand Am and 2004-2008 Pontiac Grand Prix vehicles. In these models, the weight on the key ring and/or road conditions or some other jarring event may cause the ignition switch to move out of the run position, turning off the engine.
Risk: If the key is not in the run position, the air bags may not deploy if the vehicle is involved in a crash, increasing the risk of injury.
Fix: GM will notify owners, and dealers will install two key rings and an insert in the key slot or a cover over the key head on all ignition keys, free of charge. The recall began on September 9, 2014. GM's number for this recall is 14350.

Component: EXTERIOR LIGHTING:HAZARD FLASHING WARNING LIGHTS:SWITCH
CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES HAVE HAZARD WARNING SWITCHES THAT MAY EXPERIENCE SOLDER JOINT CRACKING CAUSED BY RAPID TEMPERATURE TRANSITIONS AND THE SOLDERING PROCESS. IF SOLDER JOINT CRACKING OCCURS AND RESULTS IN AN OPEN CIRCUIT, THE TURN SIGNALS/HAZARD LAMPS BECOME INTERMITTENT OR INOPERATIVE.
Risk: WHEN THE TURN SIGNALS ARE INOPERATIVE, THE DRIVER CANNOT USE THEM TO SIGNAL INTENT TO TURN THAT COULD RESULT IN A CRASH.
Fix: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE HAZARD WARNING SWITCH. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN ON FEBRUARY 5, 2004. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT CHEVROLET AT 1-800-630-2438, PONTIAC AT 1-800-620-7668, OR OLDSMOBILE AT 1-800-630-6537.
NHTSA Campaign: 99V302000
Component: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:STORAGE:TANK ASSEMBLY:FILLER PIPE AND CAP
CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES FAIL TO COMPLY WITH REQUIREMENTS OF FMVSS NO. 301, "FUEL SYSTEM INTEGRITY." THE FUEL FILL FITTING IS NOT PROPERLY SECURED TO THE FUEL TANK. IN THAT CONDITION, FUEL LEAKAGE WOULD EXCEED THE PERMISSIBLE AMOUNT IN AN FMVSS TEST. FUEL LEAKS MAY OCCUR, PARTICULARLY AFTER REFUELING OR WHEN THE TANK IS MORE THAN HALF FULL.
Risk: IF AN IGNITION SOURCE WERE PRESENT, A FIRE COULD OCCUR.
Fix: DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE FUEL TANK AND REPLACE IT IF NECESSARY.

Your car's ignition key may rotate unintentionally, which is part of a General Motors recall (14350). You took your car to a dealer for the recall repair, but the dealer gave you conflicting information—telling you the key needed replacement rather than the ignition itself needing repair. You're seeking reimbursement for the repairs performed. The fix typically involves either replacing the ignition switch or the key, depending on what's actually causing the unintended rotation.

Your car won't start when you turn the key in the ignition, even though all the dashboard lights stay on. This suggests an electrical issue preventing the engine from cranking. The problem will likely require diagnosis of the battery, starter motor, or ignition system.

Your car won't start reliably—you have to turn the key multiple times before the engine catches. It also stalls unexpectedly while driving at various speeds. The dealership replaced your ignition switch five times over six years, but the problem keeps coming back. The manufacturer is aware and recommends further diagnostic testing to find the root cause.

Your car won't start when you turn the key, and a theft system warning light comes on the dashboard. After waiting about 15 minutes, the engine finally starts normally. This problem has happened multiple times. The issue appears to be related to your vehicle's anti-theft system preventing normal startup.

Your ignition key is stuck in the ACC (accessory) position and won't turn to OFF. This causes your battery to drain even when the car is parked. The ignition switch likely needs to be replaced or repaired to restore normal operation.

Your car is randomly stalling while you're driving at any speed without warning, and the anti-theft warning light flashes repeatedly when this happens. You have to restart the vehicle each time it stalls, and sometimes the key is very hard to turn in the ignition. This electrical system issue may require diagnosis and repair of the ignition switch, anti-theft system, or related electrical connections.

Exterior Lighting →4 issues
Your turn signals and hazard lights stopped working while you were driving and trying to switch lanes, with no warning lights showing up on your dashboard. This is a safety concern because other drivers won't know your intentions on the road. The fix will likely involve diagnosing the turn signal circuit and replacing any failed relays, switches, or wiring harnesses.

Your turn signals and emergency lights aren't working properly—when you try to use them, you hear a loud alarm sound instead of the lights turning on. The lights work only rarely and inconsistently. A mechanic has looked at it but couldn't determine the cause. This issue may be covered under a recall for your vehicle, and you should contact Chevrolet to see if you're eligible for a free repair.

Your turn signals are turning on and off unpredictably instead of working consistently. You've noticed that jiggling the hazard light switch sometimes makes the turn signals work temporarily, but they still malfunction on their own. The dealership checked your vehicle but didn't find any active recalls or diagnose the problem. A mechanic will need to inspect the turn signal switch, wiring, and related electrical connections to identify and fix the root cause.

Your turn signals on both sides stopped working. A Chevrolet dealer diagnosed that the hazard warning switch failed and needs to be replaced. This issue has been linked to a known manufacturer recall (NHTSA Campaign 03V327000), though your vehicle's VIN wasn't included in the recall records. The fix will involve replacing the hazard warning switch.

Electrical System,engine →2 issues
Your car has trouble starting and sometimes loses power while driving at highway speeds (45-55 mph), causing it to stall without warning. You may need multiple attempts to restart the engine, and the vehicle can lose power even before you shift out of Park into Reverse. You had a recall repair done for the electrical system, but the ignition switch was not included in that work. The underlying issue likely involves the ignition switch or related electrical components that need diagnosis and repair.

Your car's theft system light stays on for 10 to 25 minutes before turning off, and during this time the engine won't start. You've had the ignition cylinder and passlock sensor replaced multiple times, but the problem keeps coming back. The fix will likely involve diagnosing the theft deterrent system's wiring, sensors, or the vehicle's security module to identify why it's not recognizing your key properly.

Fuel/propulsion System →2 issues
You noticed a strong fuel smell coming from your parked vehicle in the garage, but no warning lights appeared on your dashboard. You didn't report this to the dealer or manufacturer, and the problem was never diagnosed or repaired. A fuel leak or evaporative system failure could be causing the odor, which typically requires inspection of fuel lines, connections, and the charcoal canister.

You're noticing fuel leaking from underneath your car between the driver's side doors. You're unsure whether this leak is related to a fuel system recall that has affected other Malibus. This needs to be inspected and repaired to prevent fuel loss and potential safety issues. The fix will likely involve identifying which fuel system component is leaking and replacing or sealing that part.

Steering,exterior Lighting,structure →1 issue
Your fuel turned black and started leaking while you were driving, causing your engine to shut off unexpectedly in the middle of an intersection. This sudden loss of power while driving is a serious safety hazard that requires immediate inspection of your fuel system.

Steering,fuel/propulsion System →1 issue
Your car is shutting off while you're driving, and when you try to restart it, the engine won't turn back on—though you can smell gas. This is dangerous, especially on the highway when you're stuck in traffic with no power steering or engine control. A mechanic couldn't find problems with the fuel pump or other major systems, so the issue may be related to your anti-theft system or ignition switch. The fix will likely involve diagnosing and replacing the ignition switch or having the anti-theft system reprogrammed.

Unknown Or Other →1 issue
Your ignition key won't turn off and occasionally your steering wheel locks up, making it difficult to turn the key. This is a significant safety concern since you may lose steering control while driving or have trouble shutting off the engine.

Engine,fuel/propulsion System,visibility/wiper →1 issue
Despite replacing numerous engine and cooling system components over $2000 in repairs, your car continues to leak coolant from under the lower intake manifold and won't start reliably. You experienced overheating twice on regular driving before the current issues began. The persistent coolant leak and starting problem likely indicate the lower intake manifold gasket may need replacement, or there could be a crack in the manifold itself that previous repairs haven't addressed.

Tires →1 issue
You had a negative experience at a tire shop that mounted your two new tires on opposite corners (front driver and rear passenger) instead of following standard safety practice for front-wheel drive vehicles, which typically requires new tires on the front axle with lower-tread tires moved to the rear. The shop claimed they couldn't rotate or touch tires with low tread depth. You believe this practice violates safety regulations and want the business reviewed.

Electrical System,exterior Lighting,unknown Or Other →1 issue
Your turn signals intermittently stopped working and then failed completely, even though changing the fuse didn't help and the signals don't show on your dashboard. Your car also struggles to start, sometimes requiring 3-5 attempts to turn on. You've had a recall service done on the ignition and replaced the entire ignition switch, but the starting issue persists, and you previously experienced battery drain problems.
