NHTSA Campaign: 14V400000

Component: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION

This defect can affect the safe operation of the airbag system. Until this recall is performed, customers should remove all items from their key rings, leaving only the ignition key. The key fob (if applicable), should also be removed from the key ring. General Motors LLC (GM) notified the agency on July 3, 2014, that they are recalling 5,877,718 model year 2000-2005 Chevrolet Impala and Monte Carlo, 1997-2003 Chevrolet Malibu, 2004-2005 Malibu Classic, 1999-2004 Oldsmobile Alero, 1998-2002 Oldsmobile Intrigue, 1999-2005 Pontiac Grand Am and 2004-2008 Pontiac Grand Prix vehicles. In these models, the weight on the key ring and/or road conditions or some other jarring event may cause the ignition switch to move out of the run position, turning off the engine.

Risk: If the key is not in the run position, the air bags may not deploy if the vehicle is involved in a crash, increasing the risk of injury.

Fix: GM will notify owners, and dealers will install two key rings and an insert in the key slot or a cover over the key head on all ignition keys, free of charge. The recall began on September 9, 2014. GM's number for this recall is 14350.

NHTSA Campaign: 09E012000

Component: EXTERIOR LIGHTING

SABERSPORT IS RECALLING 16,270 COMBINATION CORNER AND BUMPER LAMP ASSEMBLIES OF VARIOUS PART NUMBERS SOLD FOR USE AS AFTERMARKET EQUIPMENT FOR VARIOUS PASSENGER VEHICLES. THESE HEADLAMPS FAIL TO CONFORM TO THE REQUIREMENTS OF FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 108, "LAMPS, REFLECTIVE DEVICES, AND ASSOCIATED EQUIPMENT." THESE LAMPS DO NOT CONTAIN THE REQUIRED AMBER SIDE REFLECTORS.

Risk: DECREASED LIGHTING VISIBILITY MAY RESULT IN A VEHICLE CRASH.

Fix: SABERSPORT WILL NOTIFY OWNERS AND OFFER A FULL REFUND FOR THE NONCOMPLIANT COMBINATION LAMPS. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON MAY 11, 2009. OWNERS MAY CONTACT SABERSPORT AT 1-909-598-7589.

CERTAIN DELPHI FUEL PRESSURE REGULATORS, P/NOS. FP10020-11B1, FP10026-11B1, AND FP10027-11B1, SOLD AFTER JANUARY 9, 2007, AS AFTERMARKET EQUIPMENT FOR VARIOUS PASSENGER VEHICLES LISTED ABOVE. THE UNIVERSAL PRESSURE REGULATORS (UPR) WERE PRODUCED WITHOUT AN O'RING AND RETAINER.

Risk: FUEL MAY LEAK, POSSIBLY RESULTING IN A FIRE.

Fix: DELPHI WILL NOTIFY OWNERS AND REPLACE THE UPR FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON APRIL 23, 2007. OWNERS CAN CONTACT DELPHI AT 877-411-8770.

NHTSA Campaign: 03V527000

Component: STEERING:RACK AND PINION

CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES HAVE LOWER PINION BEARINGS IN THE POWER RACK AND PINION ASSEMBLY IN WHICH THE RETAINER TABS WERE NOT CRIMPED PROPERLY. THESE RETAINERS COULD FAIL AND PERMIT THE BALL BEARINGS TO ESCAPE.

Risk: IF THIS OCCURS, THE PINION SHAFT CAN BE FORCED UPWARD DURING LEFT TURNS AND BACK DOWN AS THE STEERING WHEEL IS MOVED BACK AND TO THE RIGHT. IF THE PINION SHAFT MOVES FURTHER, THE DRIVER WILL NEED TO EXERT MORE EFFORT TO TURN THE STEERING WHEEL, SIMILAR TO A VEHICLE WITHOUT POWER ASSISTED STEERING. IF THE PINION SHAFT MOVES EVEN FURTHER, THE DRIVER WILL REQUIRE MUCH HIGHER EFFORT TO TURN LEFT AND MAY NOT BE ABLE TO TURN THE WHEEL AS MUCH AS INTENDED. WITH THE MAXIMUM PINION SHAFT MOVEMENT, WHICH REQUIRES INTERNAL GEAR COMPONENT DAMAGE, THE DRIVER CAN ENCOUNTER HIGH RESISTANCE TO TURNING LEFT, FOLLOWED BY UNINTENDED POWER ASSIST TO THE RIGHT. IN ANY OF THESE CONDITIONS, A CRASH COULD OCCUR.

Fix: DEALERS WILL INSTALL A NEW LOWER PINION BEARING UNLESS INSPECT OF THE EXISTING BEARING INDICATES THAT REPLACEMENT OF THE GEAR ASSEMBLY IS NECESSARY. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN ON FEBRUARY 5, 2004. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT BUICK AT 1-866-608-8080; CHEVROLET AT 1-800-630-2438; OLDSMOBILE AT 1-800-630-6537; OR PONTIAC AT 1-800-620-7668.

Component: VISIBILITY:WINDSHIELD WIPER/WASHER:LINKAGES

ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES ORIGINALLY SOLD IN OR CURRENTLY REGISTERED IN THE "SALT BELT" STATES: ALASKA, COLORADO, CONNECTICUT, DELAWARE, IDAHO, ILLINOIS, INDIANA, IOWA, MAINE, MARYLAND, MASSACHUSETTS, MICHIGAN, MINNESOTA, MONTANA, NEBRASKA, NEW HAMPSHIRE, NEW JERSEY, NEW YORK, NORTH DAKOTA, OHIO, PENNSYLVANIA, RHODE ISLAND, SOUTH DAKOTA, UTAH, VERMONT, WEST VIRGINIA, WISCONSIN, AND WYOMING. IF A BUILDUP OF SNOW OR ICE RESTRICTS THE MOVEMENT OF THE PASSENGER SIDE WINDSHIELD WIPER ARM, THE PIVOT HOUSING CAN CRACK AND THE WIPERS WILL NOT OPERATE.

Risk: REDUCED VISIBILITY IN INCLEMENT WEATHER COULD LEAD TO A VEHICLE CRASH.

Fix: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE PASSENGER SIDE WINDSHIELD WIPER PIVOT HOUSING. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN AUGUST 14, 2001. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT CHEVROLET AT 1-800-222-1020 OR OLDSMOBILE AT 1-800-442-6537.

Your car shut off without warning while you were driving at 45 mph. Even though the vehicle was repaired under a recall for electrical system issues (campaign 14V400000), the problem continued to happen on and off after the repair was completed. The manufacturer has been notified. The fix may require a more thorough diagnostic of the electrical system, potentially including replacement of the ignition switch, starter motor, or battery connections.

Your car stalled without warning while driving at about 45 mph and required several restart attempts to get going again. This stalling happened multiple times, making the vehicle unreliable and potentially unsafe. Your car was covered under a recall for electrical system issues, but the repair couldn't be completed because you didn't have the original key. The electrical system likely needs diagnosis and repair to restore normal operation.

Your ignition switch is loose and wiggles when you try to turn the key. The dealer checked it against a known recall but said your loose switch isn't covered by that recall, which only addresses key modifications. The manufacturer is aware of the issue, but your vehicle wasn't repaired. Fixing this will likely involve replacing the ignition switch assembly.

Filed: Jan 2017

Your passenger airbag deployed unexpectedly while driving without any collision or impact, causing a loud explosion and shattering the windshield. The airbag went off for no apparent reason — your daughter wasn't involved in any crash, didn't hit bumps or potholes. This type of sudden airbag failure could be related to a Takata recall and poses a serious safety risk. The repair will likely involve replacing the airbag inflator and possibly the entire airbag assembly.

NHTSA #: 10944959
criticalAIR BAGS
Filed: Jul 2015

Your front passenger and driver side airbags deployed suddenly while your car was completely stopped, without any warning or accident. The airbag deployment shattered your front windshield on the passenger side. This happened at about 113,751 miles on your vehicle. The airbags may need to be replaced and the windshield will need to be replaced.

NHTSA #: 10735113
Steering2 issues
criticalSTEERING
Filed: Oct 2015

Your steering has excessive play because the factory welds holding the nut on the rack and pinion have failed. If this nut comes loose, you could lose steering control on the driver's side, creating a serious safety hazard even at low speeds. The dealership says they'll repair it if confirmed as a manufacturing defect, but you're having difficulty getting callbacks to schedule service.

NHTSA #: 10780255

Filed: Jan 2016

While turning your steering wheel, you heard loud clunking and popping sounds, and afterward left turns became very difficult to make with the steering wheel appearing off-center. Upon inspection, you found the rack and pinion mount on the passenger side had broken, likely due to rust or a manufacturing defect. The fix will require replacing the damaged rack and pinion mount assembly.

Seat Belts1 issue
criticalSEAT BELTS
CrashFiled: Jun 2023

Your front seat belts may come unbuckled while driving even though they feel securely fastened. The release button can get stuck partially down due to debris like hair or lint, allowing the belt to latch with a click but not actually lock into place — it will slip out if pulled with moderate force. This design flaw means you could be unbelted during a crash without realizing it. A replacement seat belt assembly with an improved buckle mechanism should resolve the issue.

You've had your vehicle's keys retrofitted with inserts at a Chevrolet dealer years ago to address a recall, but the dealer's records don't reflect that the work was completed. Despite six attempts to get the recall marked as finished and being told the issue was a VIN entry error that would be corrected, the problem persists in the system. You're requesting NHTSA's help to resolve this documentation issue without returning to the dealer again. Resolving this will likely require NHTSA to contact the dealer or manufacturer to correct the recall completion records.

You had a recall completed in October 2014 where spacers were added to your ignition keys to fix an electrical system issue. However, GM's system still shows the recall as incomplete even though the dealer has confirmed the work was done and you've been contacted multiple times about it. The dealership says they'll resolve the records issue so you won't be contacted again. This may require the dealer to manually update GM's recall database with proof that your repair was completed.
