Component: STRUCTURE:FRAME AND MEMBERS

General Motors, LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2022-2023 Chevrolet Malibu vehicles. The front impact bar, a structural portion of the vehicle frame, may not be properly welded to the front frame rail.

Risk: An improperly welded front impact bar may result in the front crash sensors not performing correctly, increasing the risk of injury in a crash.

Fix: Dealers will inspect the right-hand and left-hand side of the vehicle's motor rail for an incomplete weld. If the condition is found, the vehicle will be repurchased by GM. Owner notification letters were mailed January 20, 2023. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020.

CrashFiled: Dec 2025

Your side airbags failed to deploy during a rear passenger side collision at 50 mph. This is a serious safety concern since the airbags should have activated to protect occupants during the impact. The airbag system will need to be inspected and likely replaced or repaired by a technician.

CrashFiled: Sep 2025

Your 2023 Malibu was hit from behind at 30-35 MPH, and the front driver and passenger airbags only partially deployed during the collision. The seat belt did retract as expected, and your vehicle remained drivable after the crash. Your insurance company is coordinating with an auto body shop for repairs, and the vehicle was not declared a total loss.

NHTSA #: 11686423

Filed: Jun 2025

Your dealership discovered during a diagnostic test that your driver-side airbag is not functioning properly and needs repair. You were not informed about this airbag issue when you purchased the car in early April, and only learned about it when you brought the vehicle in for a different problem in June. This is a serious safety concern because the airbag may not deploy in an accident. The repair will likely involve replacing or repairing the airbag system and addressing any related wiring or sensor problems.

Tires2 issues
criticalTIRES
Filed: Feb 2026

The tread on your front driver's side tire started separating from the tire body. This is a safety concern that requires immediate attention, as a separated tire tread can cause loss of control while driving. You should have the tire inspected and replaced as soon as possible.

While driving at highway speeds, your front driver's side tire blew out suddenly. When you inspected the vehicle afterward, you discovered the front passenger's side tire had developed a sidewall blister. Both failures occurred around 11,000 miles, and the cause hasn't been determined. You may need to have the tires inspected by a dealer to determine if there's an underlying suspension or alignment issue causing premature tire wear.

Filed: Oct 2025

Your check engine light comes on and your entire car shuts down, with the engine losing power, the car shuttering, and the brakes locking up. When technicians scan the vehicle, all 7 computer modules show as faulty, but after the dealership replaced 3 modules, the same problem happened again two days later—and the scanner showed all modules were faulty again, including the ones just repaired. The issue appears to be a recurring electrical or computer system failure that may require complete module replacement or diagnosis of an underlying power distribution problem.

A screw from your turbocharger assembly came loose and fell off from under a metal plate on its own. While GM has issued a recall for 2022-2023 Chevy Malibu models with turbocharger issues, your vehicle's VIN is not covered under that program even though you have the same problem. This missing screw could affect engine performance and may need to be replaced.

FireFiled: Nov 2023

Your 2023 Malibu has experienced multiple electrical problems since purchase, including the engine shutting off while driving, dashboard going dark while the car is still running, key fob recognition failures, and radio malfunctions. The radio has been replaced once and was scheduled for a second replacement when you had to leave the state for work. Most critically, your car caught fire while driving in Florida last Sunday, and you've been trying to get documentation of this incident and previous service records from Chevrolet since April. Fixing this will likely require Chevrolet to diagnose the root electrical or software issue causing the cascading failures and fire risk, potentially involving a complete electrical system inspection and reprogramming.

Your 2023 Chevrolet Malibu failed to start when you pressed the Push-to-Start button at around 31,000 miles. The vehicle had to be towed to a dealer, but they didn't provide a diagnosis of what caused the problem. This suggests an electrical or ignition system malfunction that prevented normal engine startup.

CrashFiled: Dec 2025

Your 2023 Malibu was struck in a severe side-impact collision at highway speed, but the side curtain and front seat airbags failed to deploy, causing the driver to strike the door and window and sustain a concussion and neck/back injuries. Additionally, the OnStar emergency button system malfunctioned and failed to connect to emergency services, routing the call to the driver's personal phone instead and delaying help by 34 minutes. The airbag sensor failure pattern matches a known GM defect involving improper welding of the front impact bar that prevents crash sensors from responding. Your vehicle needs immediate inspection and testing of the airbag control module, impact sensors, and OnStar telematics system.

NHTSA #: 11707356
Electrical System,service Brakes1 issue
criticalELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES
Filed: Sep 2025

Your brake system has failed twice, with both instances traced to a brake system module that lost communication with the rest of the car's electrical system. This means your brakes may stop working without warning. The brake control module will likely need to be replaced or reprogrammed to restore proper brake function.

NHTSA #: 11689794
Fuel/propulsion System1 issue
criticalFUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
Filed: Feb 2025

Your fuel line is leaking — approximately 2 gallons leaked onto your driveway. You noticed strong fuel fumes inside the cabin, which poses a safety hazard. Your vehicle was towed for repair, but no warning lights appeared before the leak was discovered, leaving you at risk if you had started the engine.

criticalELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
Filed: Jun 2024

Your 2023 Malibu randomly stalls at stop lights while still appearing to be running, forcing you to restart it repeatedly. You're experiencing widespread electrical issues including warning lights (service ESC and airbag service lights), unexpected safety system activation (hazard lights, trunk opening, horn failure), and a dangerous automatic braking event on the highway at 75 mph that caused uncontrolled swerving. Diagnosis will likely require a complete electrical system scan and testing of the collision avoidance and stability control systems.

highPOWER TRAIN,ENGINE
Filed: Mar 2026

While driving at 75 mph, your car suddenly jerked and displayed multiple warning lights and messages, including "Low Fuel," "Shift to Park," "Check Engine," and "Engine Power Reduced." The vehicle was towed to a dealer, who replaced the battery; however, the same problem returned a week later. The dealer couldn't reproduce the issue on the second visit, making diagnosis difficult.

Filed: Sep 2025

Your car's anti-theft system is picking up key signals from other vehicles nearby, which causes it to lock you out or disable the engine without warning. This can also drain your battery if it happens repeatedly. The issue appears to be with how the anti-theft system recognizes your specific key. Fixing this will likely require reprogramming the anti-theft module or replacing the key fob receiver.

highPOWER TRAIN,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
Filed: Jul 2025

Your check engine light came on at 40,000 miles with a fuel pump error code (P023F). When you tried to drive to the dealership, your car wouldn't start and had to be towed. The dealership confirmed the fuel pump has failed, but GM says it's not covered under your powertrain warranty, leaving you to pay over $1,500 for the repair. This is unusually early for a fuel pump to fail.

Vehicle Speed Control1 issue
highVEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
Filed: Aug 2024

While driving your 2023 Chevrolet Malibu, you pressed the accelerator pedal but the vehicle didn't speed up as expected. You also noticed a grinding sound coming from underneath the vehicle. The issue occurred at approximately 38,706 miles. The problem likely involves the transmission or drivetrain and may require inspection and repair of internal components.

highUNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
Filed: Nov 2023

Your check engine light keeps turning on after just 4 months of driving, along with a message saying "engine power is reduced" and slow acceleration from stops. The dealership has replaced two different sensors and checked the vehicle multiple times, but they cannot find or fix the underlying problem, and the warning keeps coming back. The issue may require deeper diagnostic testing or replacement of engine control components to identify what's triggering the false warnings.

Fuel/propulsion System,forward Collision Avoidance1 issue
highFUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
Filed: Nov 2023

Your car's forward collision avoidance system has shown warning messages twice saying it's not working properly, and the red warning lights on your steering wheel have activated three times even when no other cars were nearby. Your tire pressure warning light also came on for the right rear tire showing 21 psi, though the pressure may have been normal, and OnStar sent you a notification about it. Additionally, your vehicle has experienced a surging problem that GM has sent to another dealership to fix, but the issue still hasn't been resolved.

highSTEERING,STRUCTURE,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
Filed: Aug 2023

Your lane assist system is unexpectedly steering your car to the right even when you're driving straight, which has nearly caused you to hit other vehicles. Your forward collision warning system is also triggering false alarms when there are no cars nearby. Additionally, you're experiencing a rattling noise from the front end of your vehicle. These issues likely involve recalibration of the lane assist and collision sensors, inspection of the front suspension and bumper components, and software updates to the safety systems.
