Component: STRUCTURE:BODY:HOOD:HINGE AND ATTACHMENTS
Southeast Toyota Distributors, LLC (SET) is recalling certain 2011-2016 Toyota Tacoma and 4Runner vehicles equipped with accessory hood scoops installed by SET or SET dealers. The adhesive attaching the hood scoop may weaken, allowing the hood scoop to detach from the vehicle.
Risk: If the hood scoop detaches, it may become a road hazard, increasing the risk of a crash.
Fix: SET will notify owners, and dealers will mechanically fasten the scoop to the hood, free of charge. The recall began on September 1, 2017. Owners may contact SET customer service at 1-954-429-2000. SET's number for this recall is SET17B.

Risk: If the vehicle is operated with an insufficient amount of oil in the rear differential, the differential may seize and cause a loss of control, increasing the risk of a crash.
Fix: Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the rear differential for oil leakage. Based on the inspection, dealers will either tightening the fastening nuts or replace the fastening nuts and gasket. If the rear differential components are damaged, the rear differential carrier assembly will be replaced. The repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall June 19, 2017. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331. Toyota's number for this recall is H0G.

Risk: The incorrect bolts may loosen over time and affect the performance of the driver's knee air bag, increasing the risk of driver injury during a crash that necessitates deployment of the air bags.
Fix: Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will install the correct driver's knee air bag module mounting bolts, free of charge. The recall began on November 19, 2015. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331. Toyota's number for this recall is F0T.
Owner-Reported Issues (20 of 319)
Engine →5 issues
Your truck's upper intake manifold flap actuator can break and cause the engine to enter limp mode, making your vehicle suddenly lose power while driving on the highway — particularly when accelerating or going uphill at higher speeds. This creates a serious safety risk since other vehicles may not expect you to suddenly slow down. The check engine light will appear, but the error code may disappear when you restart the engine, giving a false impression that the problem has resolved itself. The broken actuator must be completely replaced, as it cannot be repaired.

Your truck developed a noticeable oil leak around 58,850 miles, which the dealership confirmed was caused by a leak from the front seal or timing cover—a known issue requiring engine removal for repair. The repair cost over $5,700 out of pocket, and without the oil leak warning light, you risked running out of oil and being stranded. Fixing this type of oil leak typically requires removing the engine to access and replace the front seal or timing cover.

Your 2016 Tacoma has experienced leaking coolant from the crossover pipe and leaking oil from the timing chain cover—both requiring extensive engine work costing thousands of dollars to repair. These are known issues affecting 2016 and newer Tacomas with the 3.5L V6 engine, and Toyota has not issued a recall or extended warranty coverage. The leaks can cause overheating and oil loss, creating potential engine damage. Repairs typically require partial or full engine disassembly to access and replace the leaking components.

Your engine is leaking coolant, which can cause your engine to overheat if not addressed. You should have the cooling system inspected to find and fix the source of the leak. The repair may involve replacing a leaking hose, gasket, or the water pump.

Your engine has a coolant leak coming from the rear coolant bypass joint, which is a pipe that helps regulate engine temperature. You may notice coolant pooling under your truck or a sweet smell near the engine. If the leak gets worse, your engine could overheat. The fix will likely involve replacing the leaking bypass joint or resealing the connection.

Your Tacoma's clear coat on the hood and roof has started peeling and flaking off, exposing the paint underneath and causing oxidation. This problem started in 2022 and has gotten progressively worse, with large sections now showing bare basecoat. Toyota has confirmed this is a known defect affecting 2015–2017 Tacomas, but your vehicle's VIN isn't covered under their repair program, so they won't authorize a warranty fix. Addressing this will likely require stripping the affected panels and repainting them with a new clear coat.

Your truck has a musty smell inside the cabin, and you've noticed the rear passenger carpeting and floor mats are wet. A dealer diagnosed the problem as cracked rear quarter duct vents that are allowing water to seep into the interior of the vehicle. The repair involves replacing or sealing the damaged duct vents to prevent further water intrusion.

Your truck's paint is peeling and deteriorating even though you've maintained and washed it regularly. You've noticed online that this appears to be a widespread issue affecting white and magnetic grey Toyota vehicles, though there's no official recall for the magnetic grey paint problem. The issue will likely continue to worsen without professional repainting or a factory paint replacement.

Your truck's clear coat and paint are fading significantly on the hood, roof, and side panels. This appears to be a protective coating and paint quality issue rather than a mechanical problem. A repair would likely involve sanding, repainting, and reapplying clear coat to the affected areas.

Your 2016 Tacoma may have defective Super White paint that's peeling, but the current recall only covers specific areas like door window frames and front inner fenders. You're reporting that the paint problem extends beyond these covered areas and affects the entire paint job across multiple Tacoma generations, suggesting the recall scope is too limited. A complete vehicle repaint may be needed to fully address the widespread paint quality issues.

Electrical System →1 issue
Your Entune infotainment system frequently freezes, becomes unresponsive, or restarts while you're driving, affecting your ability to safely use the navigation, backup camera, and audio controls. These interruptions force you to look at the screen and divert your attention from the road, increasing the risk of distracted driving. You tried installing a software update from Toyota's website, but the system won't accept it because it's older than what's already installed, and there's no way to reinstall the current version yourself. The fix appears to be available only at a dealership for a fee.

Your truck's four-wheel drive system got stuck and prevented you from turning left on two separate occasions (August 2022 and last year). When you tried to disengage four-wheel drive, it remained locked in that mode. You were able to free it by repeatedly shifting between reverse and forward until you heard a loud thump. The dealership couldn't find a problem during inspection. A technician will likely need to inspect the four-wheel drive engagement and disengagement mechanism, which may involve checking the transfer case or four-wheel drive actuator.
