ENGINE KNOCKING SOUND OR TICKLING NOISE.I WENT TO THE DEALER TO DIAGNOSIS WHAT IS WRONG, BUT THEY CANNOT FIGURE OUT. THE DEALERSHIP RECOMMENDED TO REPLACE THE WHOLE ENGINE QUOTING $9,800 FOR PARTS AND LABOR. THE VEHICLE HAS ONLY 52,000 MILES ON IT, IT SHOULD NOT BE HAVING THIS PROBLEM. THE CAR IS NOT WORTH THAT MUCH, AS I WOULD BE SPENDING ON IT. LOOKING ONLINE THERE ARE OTHERS WITH THE SAME PROBLEM AND SOME HAVE SAID TOYOTA HAS REPLACED THEIR ENGINE. I CONTACTED THE EXECUTIVE OFFICE AND THEY DENIED ANY ASSISTANCE, SEEMS LIKE THEY DO NOT WANT TO STAND BEHIND THEIR CUSTOMERS WHEN PROBLEMS ARISE UNTIL IT BECOMES A BIGGER ISSUE. I AM JUST LETTING YOU GUYS KNOW OF THIS PROBLEM, I AM NOT SURE IF YOU CAN DO ANYTHING, BUT I WANT TO INVOLVE MEDIA AND OTHERS WITH THIS PROBLEM. IT IS NOT FAIR TO SPEND SO MUCH MONEY ON A CAR JUST FOR THE ENGINE TO GO OUT AT 52,000 MILES. THERE HAS TO BE SOME KIND OF MANUFACURE DEFECT.
TOYOTA EXTENDED THE WARRANTY COVERAGE FOR REPAIRS RELATED TO ILLUMINATION OF THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT (MALFUNCTION INDICATOR LIGHT) DUE TO MOISTURE/WATER IN THE AIR INJECTION PUMPS AND/OR AIR SWITCHING VALVES FOR SELECT SEQUOIA TRUCKS. IT SHOULD BE REQUIRED TO EXTEND IT TO ALL SEQUOIA TRUCKS AS IT CLEARLY RECOGNIZES THIS PUMP AND VALVE ASSEMBLY IS DEFECTIVE IN THIS MODEL. THE COVERAGE EXTENDS FOR THE LESSER OF 10 YEARS OR 150,000 MILES BUT INSTEAD SHOULD BE FOR THE GREATER OF THE TWO. THIS REPAIR COSTS $4000 AND TYPICALLY OCCURS WHEN THE TRUCK VALUE IS NEAR $7000. MY TRUCK IS EXPERIENCING THIS PROBLEM AND WILL NOT ACCELERATE ABOVE 50 MPH WHICH CAN BE DANGEROUS.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 TOYOTA SEQUOIA. WHILE STARTING THE VEHICLE, AN ABNORMAL NOISE WAS OBSERVED AND THE CHECK ENGINE INDICATOR ILLUMINATED. ENGINE WARNING AND VSC TRAC OFF LIGHTS, I HAD SEVERAL ISSUES WITH THESE WARNINGS. THIS IS THE SECOND TIME IT HAD HAPPENED TO MY SUV. THE LAST TIME WAS ON A LONG VACATION TRIP AND IT SUDDENLY GOES ON AND THE ENGINE STARTS TO GO ON LIMP MODE, WHERE IT SLOWS DOWN DRAMATICALLY EVEN THOUGH THE SUV'S ENGINE IS FINE. IT WAS PRETTY DANGEROUS BECAUSE WE WERE ON A FWY WHERE THE SPEED IS 75 MPH. WE TOOK IT IN FOR REPAIR IN TOYOTA DEALER AND IT JUST NEED A ROUTINE MAINTENANCE WHICH COST ME $2600 TO GET THIS LIGHTS OFF! TWO YEARS LATER TO THIS DAY, THE LIGHTS WENT ON AGAIN AND NOW THE SAME THING, IT IS GOING TO COST ME $2600 TO GET THESE LIGHT OFF! THIS IS HAPPENING A LOT TO ALL 2005 SEQUOIA. THE SECONDARY INJECTION PUMP HAS FAILED. IT STARTED WITH A LOUD WINDING NOISE ANYTIME IT WAS STARTED AT A COLD START. THE NOISE WOULD LAST A FEW MINUTES. THEN EVERYTHING WAS FINE. THEN THE ENTIRE THING WENT OUT AND MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON ALONG WITH ALL TRACTION CONTROL HAS GONE OUT. THE VEHICLE WILL NOT ACCELERATE AT A NORMAL SPEED AND IT IS VERY DANGEROUS WHILE DRIVING, ESPECIALLY ON THE INTERSTATE. THE VEHICLE HAS A FAILED AIR INJECTION SYSTEM THAT CAUSES A REDUCTION IN THE ENGINE'S POWER OUTPUT. WHEN THE INITIAL FAILURE BEGAN THERE WAS A LOUD VACUUM SOUND UPON START UP AND ALL DASH WARNING LIGHTS CAME ON. OVER TIME THE SOUND WENT AWAY BUT ENGINE POWER IS STILL GREATLY REDUCED. THIS POSES A VERY SERIOUS SAFETY RISK AS THE VEHICLE CAN NOT ACCELERATE ADEQUATELY TO HIGHWAY SPEEDS OR MAINTAIN SPEEDS ON AN INCLINE THUS POSING A RISK FOR ACCIDENTS AND AS A RESULT POSSIBLE INJURY. TOYOTA WAS NOTIFIED OF THE ISSUE IN SUMMER 2012 BUT STATED THEY WOULD NOT COVER OR REPLACE ANY COMPONENTS RELATED TO THIS AS THE VEHICLE WAS OUT OF WARRANTY. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALERSHIP TOYOTA SCION CONCORD (CONCORD, NC) AND A DIAGNOSTIC TEST WAS PERFORMED SHOWING A FAILED AIR INJECTION SYSTEM. THE REPLACEMENT COST ARE APPROXIMATELY $3,500 AND REQUIRES A SERVICE TECHNICIAN TO BREAK DOWN THE MOTOR TO REPLACE THE NECESSARY COMPONENTS. WITH THE COST OF THE SYSTEM BEING SIGNIFICANT THIS GOES BEYOND THE SCOPE OF A BASIC REPAIR. 2ND GENERATION SEQUIOAS (2008-CURRENT) ALSO EXPERIENCED FAILED AIR INJECTION SYSTEMS AND TOYOTA REPLACED THE SYSTEM IN THESE VEHICLES BUT DID NOT IN THE 1ST GENERATION ALTHOUGH THEY SHARE A SIMILAR POWERTRAIN. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 TOYOTA SEQUOIA. THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 30 MPH WHEN SHE ATTEMPTED TO DRIVE UPHILL AND THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT ACCELERATE. THE CONTACT STATED THE DEFECT WAS ONLY PRESENT WHEN ATTEMPTING TO DRIVE UPHILL. THE VEHICLE WAS DIAGNOSED BY THE DEALER AND THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE AIR INJECTION SYSTEM EXHIBITED AN INTERNAL MALFUNCTION FROM DEBRIS THAT RUPTURED FROM INSIDE THE AIR INJECTION SYSTEM. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED AND NO SOLUTION WAS OFFERED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 99,500.
MY SEQUOIA WILL ALL OF A SUDDEN STOP ACCELERATING WHILE DRIVING. TRAC LIGHT AND VSC LIGHT AND CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. I HAD TO TURN THE IGNITION OFF AND BACK ON TO GET IT MOVING AGAIN...I TOOK IT STRAIGHT TO THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP. THEY DID SEVERAL TESTS. ALL BUT ONE TEST DETERMINED IT WAS THE ENGINE CONTROL UNIT (OF WHICH IS COVERED UNDER A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT). BECAUSE OF THAT ONE TEST, THEY WILL NOT FIX IT. THE SERVICE MANAGER TOLD ME I HAD TO KEEP DRIVING IT UNTIL IT BREAKS DOWN ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND THEY WOULD TOW IT BACK THERE. PROBLEM IS...I MIGHT BE DEAD IN THE TRUCK DEPENDING ON WHERE AND WHEN IT HAPPENS AGAIN. I AM TERRIFIED TO DRIVE IT! MY SEQUOIA HAS BEEN A LEMON! VEHICLE COMPUTER IS OPERATING IN SAFE MODE AT A REDUCED CAPACITY UNTIL REPAIR IS DONE. TOYOTA HAS EXTENDED THE WARRANTY TO 10 YEARS OR 150,000 MILES FOR THIS PROBLEM BUT NOT FOR THE 2005 MODEL YEAR. WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY AT 55 MPH, MY VEHICLE SUDDENLY DECELERATED TO 20 MPH. AFTER EXITING, I STILL COULD NOT ACCELERATE ABOVE 20 MPH. I SCHEDULED AN APPOINTMENT WITH R&H TOYOTA IN OWINGS MILLS, MD FOR FRIDAY, MARCH 15, 2013. I RECEIVED A CALL FROM THE DEALERSHIP INFORMING ME IT WAS NECESSARY TO REPLACE THE SECONDARY AIR INJECTION PUMP, BUT SINCE THE PART WAS NO LONGER AVAILABLE, I WOULD NEED TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE VALVE ASSEMBLY AND THE SKID CONTROL COMPUTER, AT A TOTAL COST OF $4,845.02. MY INTERNET RESEARCH REVEALED TOYOTA IS AWARE OF THE DEFECTIVE SECONDARY AIR INJECTION SYSTEM IN THEIR VEHICLES AND AS A RESULT ISSUED A WARRANTY ENHANCEMENT, IN RESPONSE TO REPORTS OF AIR INDUCTION PUMP ASSEMBLIES AND/OR AIR INJECTION SWITCHING VALVES ISSUES ON THEIR 2007-2010 TUNDRA AND 2008-2010 SEQUOIA MODELS, UP TO 150,000 MILES. I CALLED TOYOTA TO QUESTION WHY THE DECISION WAS MADE TO NOT INCLUDE ALL MODEL YEARS WITH THE DEFECTIVE SECONDARY AIR INJECTION SYSTEM AND WAS INFORMED IT WAS THEIR ENGINEERS' DECISION. NO ONE AT TOYOTA COULD FURTHER EXPLAIN THIS TO ME. MY RESEARCH REVEALS THERE ARE MANY MODELS FOR 2005 - 2008 AFFECTED BY THIS DEFECT. THE EXPLANATION FOR THE EXORBITANT EXPENSE WAS BECAUSE OF A DESIGN CHANGE AND THAT TOYOTA NO LONGER MANUFACTURES THE DEFECTIVE PART, OWNERS OF VEHICLES FOR MODELS 2005 - 2008 WOULD NEED TO REPLACE ENTIRE SYSTEM. SO, TOYOTA APPARENTLY ACKNOWLEDGES A DEFECT IN THEIR DESIGN AND ITS IMPACT ON VEHICLE OWNERS. I CANNOT AFFORD $5,000.00 FOR A VEHICLE THAT IS ONLY EIGHT (8) YEARS OLD. BASED ON MY RESEARCH, THERE IS A LARGE CLASS OF TOYOTA CUSTOMERS AFFECTED BY THIS DEFECT. PLEASE INVESTIGATE AND ADVISE. *TR

THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 121,600.
THE BRAKE LIGHT CONSTANTLY GOES ON AND OFF. TRAC OFF, VSC TRAC AND CHECK ENGINE LIGHTS ALL COME ON. A LOUD RATTLING NOISE COMING FROM THE FRONT END OF VEHICLE AND VIBRATION WHEN STARTING UP THE VEHICLE. ENGINE WILL NOT ACCELERATE RANDOMLY WHILE DRIVING AND THE TRAC CONTROL LIGHT GOES ON AT THE SAME TIME. I FIRST EXPERIENCED THIS WHILE GOING UP A MOUNTAIN AND NEEDED TO TURN AROUND BECAUSE MY VEHICLE STARTED TO DECELERATE EVEN WITH THE GAS COMPLETELY FLOORED. I NOTICED THAT THERE ARE A LOT OF COMPLAINTS FOR THE SAME ISSUE. IS TOYOTA WAITING FOR A DEATH TO HAPPEN BEFORE THEY DO SOMETHING. THIS IS A FAMILY VEHICLE AND I'M TRANSPORTING MY 2 AND 5 YEAR OLD. I WAS ON MY WAY HOME FROM WORK WHEN THE ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON FOR A FEW SECONDS THEN DISAPPEARED. TWO DAYS LATER THE ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AGAIN AND THE VEHICLE STARTED TO RIDE ROUGH LIKE IT NEED A TUNE-UP. THE ENGINE LIGHT DISAPPEARED AND THE VEHICLE DROVE FINE UNTIL I REACHED HOME. THE ENGINE LIGHT, VSC OFF AND VSC TRAC ALL CAME ON AND THE VEHICLE WAS RIDING REALLY ROUGH. I TOOK IT TO FIRESTONE SO THEY COULD LOOK AT BUT THEY COULDN'T FIGURE OUT THE PROBLEM. SO I TOOK IT TO TOYOTA SO THEY COULD FIX THE PROBLEM. THEY THOUGHT IT WAS CARBON BUILD UP AROUND THE CYLINDERS, SO THEY CLEANED ALL EIGHT CYLINDERS BUT THAT DIDN'T WORK. I STILL HAD TO PAY FOR IT. THE FINALE SOLUTION WAS FOR THEM TO TEAR DOWN THE ENGINE. THEY CLAIMED THAT PISTON #3 WASN'T WORKING AT ITS FULL CAPACITY AFTER RUNNING A COMPRESSION TEST BUT THEY'RE NOT 100% SURE. THE COST FOR THEM TO TAKE THE HEAD OFF WOULD BE $862 AND ANOTHER $862 TO PUT IT BACK TOGETHER PLUS WHAT EVER REAL PROBLEM IS. THE SERVICE GUY AT TOYOTA SAID THAT HE HAS SEEN THREE SIMILAR PROBLEMS LIKE THIS AND IT COST THE CUSTOMER AROUND $3000. MY DVD PLAYER WASN'T WORKING SO THE TECH TESTED IT AND STATED THAT POWER WAS GOING TO IT AND THAT IT SHOULD WORK. THREE WEEKS LATER THE DVD PLAYER WORKED BUT NOW MY BACK WINDOW DIDN'T. WHEN I PUSH THE BUTTON FOR THE BACK WINDOW THE BACK WIPER COMES ON. *TR

THE LAST TIME THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED WAS ON 10/17/2006. ON 10/17/2006 THE CONTACT BOUGHT A NEW TRANSMISSION BECAUSE THE FAILURE COULD NOT BE DIAGNOSED. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THERE WERE MULTIPLE DRIVE LINE REPAIRS, AND THAT THE CAR WAS LUNGING FORWARD AND MAKING A CLUNKING SOUNDS. TWO DAYS AFTER REPLACING THE ENGINE THE CONTACT RETURNED WITH THE VEHICLE BECAUSE IT WAS LURCHING FORWARD AND MAKING A CLUNKING NOISE WHILE BEING DRIVEN. THE CONTACT HAS TRIED TO GET THE VEHICLE DIAGNOSED SINCE THE NEW ENGINE WITHOUT SUCCESS. *AK
CHECK ENGINE LIGHT AND VSC/TRACTION CONTROL LIGHTS KEEP COMING ON. TOOK IT TO TOYOTA OF LEWISVILLE, TEXAS ON 30 JUNE 06 AND AGAIN TO TOYOTA OF KILLEEN, TEXAS ON 15 JULY 06. TOYOTA OF LEWISVILLE TOLD ME IT WAS BAD GAS AND THAT THE PROBLEM WAS FIXED. ON 13 JUNE 06 THE LIGHT CAME ON BUT WENT OFF AFTER A COUPLE OF MILES. ON MY WAY TO DALLAS ON 14 JUN 06 THE SAME THING HAPPENED. LATER THAT DAY ON MY WAY BACK FROM DALLAS THE LIGHTS CAME BACK ON AND I TOOK MY SEQUOIA TO TOYOTA OF KILLEEN ON 15 JULY 06. THEY WORKED ON MY SEQUOIA UNTIL 25 JULY 06. I ONLY HAD MY TRUCK FOR A DAY WHEN THE LIGHTS CAME BACK ON. I TOOK THE TRUCK BACK TO THE DEALER THE NEXT DAY, 27 JULY 06, AND THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT TURNED OFF THE LIGHTS AND AN HOUR LATER TOLD ME MY SEQUOIA WAS READY AND THAT IF THE PROBLEM PERSISTED TO BRING IT BACK. RIGHT THERE IN THE SERVICE BAY THE LIGHT CAME ON AND THE DEALERSHIP HAS HAD IT EVER SINCE. I TALKED TO THE SERVICE REP AND HE INFORMS ME THAT THE COMPUTER HAS BEEN REPLACED AND THE PROBLEM PERSIST. THEY CHECKED THE FUEL AND DRAINED THE FUEL AND THE PROBLEM PERSIST. *JB
VEHICLE EXHAUST FUMES ENTER VEHICLE CABIN VIA OPEN REAR WINDOW DUE TO LOCATION OF EXHAUST(NOT EXTENDED BEYOND REAR BUMPER) THIS HAS BEEN AN ONGOING PROBLEM SINCE THE VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED IN MARCH 2005. *NM
VEHICLE EMITS A ROTTEN EGG SMELL THROUGH THE VENTILATION SYSTEM WHENEVER WE STEP ON THE ACCELERATOR. SOMETIMES THE SMELL IS SO BAD THAT IT BURNS OUR EYES AND NOSE! TOYOTA ACKNOWLEDGED THE PROBLEM, STATING THEY COULD NOT DO ANYTHING UNTIL A RECALL FOR THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER IS ISSUED. THEY FURTHER SAID THAT EARLIER YEAR MODELS (2003-2005) VEHICLES HAD THE SAME PROBLEM! *NM
VERY EXCESSIVE FAST IDLE SPEED IN MY 2005 SEQUOIA. I TOO OWNED A PREVIOUS SEQUOIA (2000) MODEL AND THERE IS NO COMPARISON. IT CAN TAKE ANYWHERE FROM 4 OR MORE MINUTES TO WARM UP THE ENGINE BEFORE THERE IS ANY NOTICEABLE CHANGE IN ITS IDLE. IN FACT, I CAN IDLE OUT OF MY SUBDIVISION WITHOUT HITTING THE ACCELERATOR. THIS SHOULD NOT BE. YOU CAN ALSO HEAR AN INCREASE IN ITS IDLE IF YOU TURN ON THE VEHICLES HEATER. THE ENGINE EVEN REVS MORE. YOU NO LONGER CAN GET THE THIS VEHICLE, START IT, AND LET IT WARM UP 2 OR 3 MINUTES AND PUT IT IN DRIVE OR REVERSE. GETTING IN A COLD VEHICLE AFTER A PACKER'S GAME, YOU MUST SIT THERE AND WAIT....AND WAIT....AND WAIT WHILE ALL OF THE OTHER PARKED (AND COLD) VEHICLES HAVE LEFT THE PARKING LOT. IF YOU DO NOT LET THE VEHICLE WARM UP A GOOD 5 MINS. YOU ALSO HAVE PROBLEMS GETTING THE VEHICLE TO SHIFT GEARS. YOU CAN BE GIVING IT GAS AND IT IS NOT GOING NO WHERE. IT GIVES YOU THE FEELING LIKE YOUR TRANSMISSION IS SLIPPING AND/OR NOT ENGAGING. I HAVE TAKEN THE VEHICLE BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY TELL ME THAT THIS IS 'NORMAL'. I HAVE BEEN DRIVING FOR MANY A YEAR AND I KNOW THAT THIS IS NOT NORMAL. THEY ALSO TELL ME THAT THEY CANNOT ADJUST ITS IDLE BECAUSE OF EMISSION REQUIREMENTS. I DID NOT HAVE ONE PROBLEM WITH MY PREVIOUS SEQUOIA !, AND IF I WAS SHOPPING AROUND FOR ANOTHER SUV NOW AND HAVING THIS MAJOR PROBLEM IN MY 2005, I'D BE SHOPPING ELSEWHERE. *NM
UPON START-UP, THE VEHICLE PRODUCES DANGEROUSLY HIGH IDLE SPEEDS THAT DOES NOT CORRECT WHEN THE VEHICLE'S GEARS ARE ENGAGED. CONSTANT HEAVY BRAKE PRESSURE IS REQUIRED TO CONTROL THE VEHICLE. *JB
CAR IDLES AT A VERY HIGH RPM WHEN STARTED. CAUTION MUST BE USED TO FIRMLY DEPRESS THE BRAKE BEFORE SELECTING DRIVE OR REVERSE. MY CAR WILL DO 10 MPH WITHOUT TOUCHING THE ACCELERATOR. IT SEEMS TO TAKE FIVE MINUTES OR SO TO IDLE DOWN.
ENGINE NOISE IS VERY LOUD. IT WOULD SEEM THAT THE SOUND INSULATION AROUND THE ENGINE IS MISSING, BUT IT IS NOT. THE RADIATOR FAN IS ESPECIALLY LOUD ON INITIAL ACCELERATION. MY FIRST 5000 MILE SERVICE WAS JUST COMPLETED AND AFTER MY COMPLAINT, THE DEALER PERFORMED A RECALL ON THE FAN WHICH WAS SUPPOSED TO REDUCE THE NOISE. IT IS NO BETTER. DURING HOT SUMMER DAYS, IT IS WORSE BECAUSE THE FAN RUNS FASTER (OR LOUDER) TO MAINTAIN PROPER ENGINE TEMPERATURE. (NOTE: I TRADED IN MY 2002 SEQUOIA WITH 80,000 MILES AND NEVER HEARD THE ENGINE ON THAT CAR).
UPON ACCELERATION VEHICLE CABIN FILLS WITH A SULFUR (ROTTEN EGG) SMELL. DEALERSHIP STATES THEY CANNOT DUPLICATE. UPON PICKUP THE VEHICLE EXHIBITED THE SAME PROBLEM WITHIN ONE BLOCK OF THE DEALERSHIP.
I HAD OWNED A 2001 TOYOTA SEQUOIA FOR FOUR YEARS BEFORE RECENTLY TRADING IT IN FOR A 2005 MODEL. I OBVIOUSLY LOVE THE CAR BUT THERE IS AN UNFORTUNATE FLAW IN THE 2005 MODEL THAT DIFFERS FROM MY 2001 MODEL. WHEN THE VEHICLE IS STARTED COLD THE IDLE SPEED IS VERY HIGH - ABOUT 1500+ RPM. THE IDLE DOESN'T SLOW DOWN APPRECIABLY UNTIL THE CAR HAS WARMED UP - ABOUT 5 MINUTES DEPENDING ON THE WEATHER. THE PROBLEM WITH THE HIGH IDLE COMES WHEN TRYING TO DRIVE THE CAR ON AN ICY SURFACE. I CAME OUT OF MY GARAGE ON AN ICY MORNING, PUT THE CAR INTO FORWARD, KEPT MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE AND SLOWLY TRIED TO MOVE FORWARD. EVEN AT A SNAIL'S PACE THE CAR SKIDDED UNCONTROLLABLY INTO A RAISED FLOWER BED BY MY HOUSE SCRAPING THE UNDER PANELS. MY 2001 SEQUOIA NEVER HAD THIS PROBLEM. THE HIGH IDLE SPEED MAKES THE CAR UNCONTROLLABLE ON ICE. THERE IS SIMPLY TOO MUCH TORQUE AND POWER EVEN WITH THE BRAKE ON. TOYOTA SHOULD BE REQUIRED TO SET BACK THE IDLE SPEED SO THAT THE CAR CAN BE CONTROLLED ON A SLIPPERY SURFACE WHEN THE ENGINE IS WARMING UP. *JB
