RECALLCampaign #22V519000

AIR BAGS:SENSOR:OCCUPANT CLASSIFICATION:FRONT PASSENGER

Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2022 Rav4, Rav4 Hybrid, and Rav4 Prime vehicles. The front passenger seat may have been assembled with interference between internal parts that may cause the Occupant Classification System (OCS) sensor to incorrectly detect the occupant. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 208, "Occupant Crash Protection."

Fix: Dealers will inspect and repair the front passenger seat, as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed September 2, 2022. Owners may contact Toyota's customer service at 1-800-331-4331. Toyota's number for this recall is 22TA08.

While driving 80 mph on a clear day with good road conditions, your car's airbags suddenly deployed and the vehicle came to an abrupt stop without hitting anything or any debris. You and your passenger were not seriously injured, but there was significant damage to the driver's side front end around the tire and axle area, suggesting something inside the car may have broken and caused the tire to fail. The vehicle was totaled, and Toyota is investigating whether this was caused by a faulty part or mechanical failure. The repair would require a complete mechanical investigation to identify what component failed and caused the airbags to deploy.

Your car was involved in a crash after another vehicle forced you into traffic. Before the collision, you noticed tire pressure and traction control warning lights turning on and off. Most concerning, after the crash, your dashboard only displayed an airbag system malfunction message instead of the expected safety system responses. This suggests your airbag and forward collision warning systems may not have functioned properly during the incident.

Your airbag did not deploy during a crash, but the airbag cover popped open from the steering wheel and powder was visible inside. The dealership told you this indicates an airbag failure, though there are no recalls available for your vehicle. Your car is currently at a wrecker's yard, and it's unclear what inspections have been completed. Fixing this will likely require replacing the airbag module and steering wheel airbag assembly.

The contact owns a 2022 Toyota RAV4. The contact stated that a sudden complete stop on a major roadway was necessary due to a turtle crossing, and the vehicle in front was at a complete stop and exited the vehicle in their attempt to remove the turtle from the road. A third vehicle coming from the rear failed to slow down and was driving at 55 MPH, crashed into the rear of the contact. As a result, the contact rear-ended the vehicle in front, which was unoccupied due to the attempt of a turtle removal from the roadway. The contact mentioned that the seat belt did not retract during the impact. No air bags deployed.  The vehicle was towed to Copart Collision Center pending the insurance company's inspection of the vehicle. The contact stated that she sustained a head injury that required medical attention. A police report was filed, but the police report number was unknown. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 36,098.

I received from Toyota USA via USPS a "Safety Recall Notice" regarding my 2022 RAV4 hybrid. Both the local Toyota dealer and Toyota Brand Engagement Center told me there is no recall on my vehicle. Neither could tell me why I received the notice. When I searched NHTSA recall database for Recall No. 22V-519, it referenced an unrelated fire hazard on HYundai and Kia vehicles. Attached please find the notice and its envelope. Sending false information like this creates a perception of danger, when perhaps none exists
