NHTSA Campaign: 18V579000
Component: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:WIRING
Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2016-2018 Toyota Prius vehicles. A portion of the engine wire harness connected to the hybrid Power Control Unit (PCU), could contact the cover at this connection and wear, causing an electrical short circuit.
Risk: An electrical short can increase the risk of a fire.
Fix: Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the engine wire harness assembly and replace it if damage is found. A protective sleeve or protective tape will be included to prevent any future damage. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began October 30, 2018. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-888-270-9371. Toyota's number for this recall is J0T.
NHTSA Campaign: 17V295000
Component: TIRES:TEMPORARY/EMERGENCY SPARE TIRE
Gulf States Toyota, Inc. (Gulf States) is recalling certain 2017 4Runner , 86, Avalon, Camry, Camry Hybrid, Corolla, Corolla iM, Highlander, Highlander Hybrid, Prius, Prius C, RAV4, RAV4 Hybrid, Sienna and Yaris vehicles. The spare tire air pressure was not adjusted to the proper pressure as stated on the Tire Pressure Label.
Risk: A spare tire that is not inflated to the proper value may not perform as intended, increasing the risk of a crash.
Fix: Gulf States will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the spare tires, adjusting their pressure as necessary, free of charge. The recall began June 15, 2017. Owners may contact Gulf States customer service at 1-800-444-1074. Toyota's number for this recall is 17R2.

Component: PARKING BRAKE
Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain model year 2016-2017 Prius vehicles manufactured August 6, 2015, to October 3, 2016. The affected vehicles are equipped with a foot-operated parking brake system that has a parking brake cable that may disengage.
Risk: If the parking brake cable disengages from the mechanism and the transmission is left in a gear other than 'Park' while the ignition is on and the driver leaves the vehicle, the vehicle may roll unexpectedly, increasing the risk of a crash.
Fix: Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will install a clip at the parking brake cable end to prevent the cable from disengaging, free of charge. The recall began November 10, 2016. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-888-270-9371. Toyota's number for this recall is G01.
Owner-Reported Issues (20 of 100)
Fuel/propulsion System →3 issues
Your Prius stalls or hesitates for 5-6 seconds when you press the gas pedal after coming to a stop, especially in hot weather. The car eventually moves forward, but the problem happens again later. It occurs unpredictably with no warning lights on your dashboard, and mechanics have had trouble finding the cause.

When you try to fill your gas tank, gasoline sprays back out at you instead of flowing into the tank, soaking your clothes and spilling onto the car and ground. Your mechanic found that the fuel filler neck vent valve (the part that lets air out when you fill up) was stuck, causing the backup. This valve needs to be replaced, which typically costs several hundred dollars.

Your Prius overflowed fuel immediately when filling the tank, spraying gasoline on the car, ground, tires, and your feet without warning. A technician found that the air vent that allows air to escape during fueling had failed, causing fuel to back up out of the filler neck. The repair required replacing this vent component, which cost $337 in parts and labor.

Engine →2 issues
Your engine is leaking coolant into the exhaust system and engine oil, which has caused the engine to stop running unexpectedly and fail completely. This happens when coolant mixes with motor oil, which damages the engine. The fix will likely require replacing the damaged engine or having a mechanic diagnose and repair the internal leak source, such as a failed gasket or head crack.

While driving slowly out of a parking lot at 10 MPH, your Prius suddenly lost power and made unusual noises, with warning lights appearing on the dashboard. The vehicle wouldn't restart and had to be towed to the dealer, where technicians found that the head gasket had failed and damaged the engine, requiring a complete engine replacement. Both the Toyota dealership and an independent mechanic confirmed the same diagnosis. Since your vehicle was out of warranty at approximately 80,000 miles, Toyota declined to cover the repair.

Electrical System →2 issues
Your 2017 Prius may have had its odometer rolled back before you purchased it. The mileage jumped from 126,611 miles when you bought it to 225,810 miles according to a CARFAX report from November 2024, suggesting someone tampered with the odometer reading. This is odometer fraud, which affects the vehicle's true maintenance history and value. Addressing this would require documenting the discrepancy with CARFAX, your purchase records, and potentially contacting Toyota or pursuing legal action against the seller.

Your car won't start even though the battery tests fine, and this happens when you leave accessories like the radio, wipers, heater, or air conditioner running when you turn off the engine. When the "Low Battery" warning appears, you need a jump start to get the car going again, which is inconvenient in remote areas. The issue suggests a sensor or charging system problem rather than an actual dead battery, since the car starts immediately once another vehicle's battery is connected.

Engine,fuel/propulsion System →2 issues
Your Prius displayed a dashboard message indicating the grille shutter was inoperable starting in March 2024. Toyota dealerships refused to cover repairs under available service bulletins and warranty coverage, even though your vehicle was within the California emissions warranty limit of 150,000 miles. You ended up paying out-of-pocket for diagnostics, repairs including a water pump and head gasket replacement, and a rental car while the vehicle was being fixed.

Your dashboard warning light indicates your grille shutter (part of the emissions system) isn't working properly. Even though Toyota confirmed a recall applies to your vehicle at no charge, the dealer refused to perform the repair after three visits and instead charged you $200 for diagnostics. Since the initial problem wasn't fixed, you're now seeing a second warning about your hybrid system overheating, your car has stalled on the freeway, and your fuel economy has worsened. The repair will likely involve the dealer replacing or repairing the grille shutter motor and related components, which they should do under recall at no cost.

Unknown Or Other →1 issue
While driving 70 mph on a highway in normal conditions, your sunroof suddenly shattered and exploded inward with no warning—no rocks, debris, weather, or other obvious cause. The glass remained in an outward-facing position, suggesting the failure came from internal pressure rather than external impact. This startling event could easily cause a loss of vehicle control, and the owner reports similar incidents from other Toyota owners online.

Vehicle Speed Control →1 issue
While turning slowly into a parking spot, your car suddenly accelerated on its own without you pressing the accelerator pedal. You had to slam on the brakes to stop the car, which could have resulted in a collision. You suspect a malfunction with the accelerator system, though no warning messages appeared before this happened.

Vehicle Speed Control,engine →1 issue
While driving on an expressway, your car suddenly lost engine power and the accelerator stopped responding. A red radar warning appeared on your dashboard at the moment this happened. After turning the engine off for about 10 minutes, it restarted and you were able to drive it to a dealer, though the second dealer couldn't diagnose the issue. This same car experienced a similar sudden power loss about six months earlier, though no problem was found at that time.

Vehicle Speed Control, unknown Or Other →1 issue
Your car has experienced multiple sudden, unexpected forward lunges at full throttle while your foot was on the brake, resulting in two crashes. The dealer claimed the brief forward lurch when slowing down was normal hybrid behavior, but these incidents appear to be more severe and dangerous than typical operation. The second crash caused injuries and occurred while parking. This issue may involve problems with the throttle control system, brake system interaction, or hybrid powertrain management that require thorough diagnostic investigation.

Engine And Engine Cooling →1 issue
Your car's air vents are blowing cold air while driving, and your check engine light is on. The dealer found that coolant is leaking into your exhaust pipe, which is why you've been needing to refill the coolant reservoir every few days. The fix will likely involve replacing the front exhaust pipe to stop the coolant leak.

Power Train →1 issue
Your 2017 Prius is experiencing intermittent power delivery problems where the engine stalls when you press the accelerator, and the vehicle sometimes fails to restart. You've also noticed the battery charge indicator not showing proper charging, and occasionally the excessive acceleration warning light comes on even when you're not pressing the gas pedal. Because the problem doesn't happen consistently when mechanics test it, diagnosis has been difficult, but Toyota says they can't help. The issue may involve the hybrid battery system, inverter, or throttle control needing inspection and possible replacement.

Service Brakes →1 issue
While driving your 2017 Prius on the highway, you heard a loud ringing noise coming from the rear of the vehicle. You discovered the driver's side rear brake pad had tilted and was banging against the rotor, which your son replaced. You're concerned that this unexpected noise could distract drivers and cause an accident, and you believe Toyota should investigate the brake pad manufacturer since your car is known for gentle braking.

Seats →1 issue
Your driver's seat power adjustment stopped working suddenly, making strange noises and leaving you unable to reach the pedals comfortably without adding pillows. The dealer found that the seat track was worn out and the motor needs replacement. The repair requires removing the seat and costs around $3,000 since your warranty has expired.

Visibility/wiper →1 issue
Your windshield cracked on its own while the car was parked in 95-degree heat, spreading from bottom to top and across the glass with no visible impact or rock damage. This happened without the car running and with no rain or other apparent cause. The windshield will likely need to be replaced.
