Heading westbound on I-70, taking Exit 29 off ramp from highway, I drove over uneven pavement. My traction control, ABS and brake lights illuminated, the brakes suddenly felt mushy. As I approached the stoplight at the end of the exit ramp, I questioned whether I would be able to stop. Scared me immensely. Luckily no cars were near me. I now do not have ABS, Traction Control, stability control OR regenerative braking.

My car accelerated significantly on its own while I was pulling into a parking stall in a private parking lot. It caused my vehicle to jump a curb and accelerate up a dirt divider and push over a bush that was planted in the dirt divider. Depressing my brakes did not Decelerate the car, so I pressed the Park button to eventually stop the vehicle. I’m not sure what speed it was traveling when it accelerated, but I could smell burning rubber at the end of the incident. I’m not sure when the smell first occurred.

The breaking lights, skid lights and another light associated with breaks came out and I lost the ABS abilities, the hv battery is not charging while breaking. These lights comes out randomly. Very risky especially while breaking.

The ABS, VSC/traction control, and brake system warning lights all came on at the same time in my 2010 Toyota Prius. I almost lost control of my car's braking ability. Afterwards, the hybrid system does not perform its regenerative braking/recharging any longer. And the cruise control mode doesn't work also. The DTC from the OBD2 port is C1391 - abnormal leak in the brake fluid accumulator. I found out that this issue is widespread among Gen 3 Priuses, but Toyota has not made this officially a recall campaign, but classifies it as a "customer support bulletin." But the issue is dangerous enough that it should be a recall item. I moved homes in fall of 2018, and Toyota says it mailed out a letter about this brake issue and resulting campaign, but I never received the letter. I was totally unaware that this was a safety issue, that Toyota acknowledged it, and that this safety issue with an ongoing "recall" campaign with an expiration date. Toyota denies that this is a recall issue, and will not provide this service. I would like for NHTSA to reopen and investigate this issue, and make Toyota issue a general recall campaign to resolve this dangerous safety problem with the car.

I was driving my 2010 Toyota Prius and my car started beeping when I was driving when I tried to slow down the car was not able to stop the breaking system ABS started displaying and my car started to beep and it won’t stop beeping. I did take my car to the dealer for a recalled inspection after my car broke down and I was no longer able to drive for my own safety. After I took the car to Downey Toyota for hybrid recall they didn’t tell me anything but on the document they gave me it did state that the ABS was a problem. Now my car is still not able to be used because of my own safety concerns since the vehicle won’t break when I put the brake pedal and a none stop beeping sound that won’t stop at all.

ON TWO OCCASIONS, JUNE 22, 2018 AND AUGUST 15, 2018 THIS VEHICLE SUDDENLY ACCELERATED WHILE USING CRUISE CONTROL AND TRAVELING AT SPEED ON GENERALLY FLAT, STRAIGHT, 4 LANE ROAD IN GOOD WEATHER. I HAVE ATTACHED DOCUMENTS WITH SUMMARIES OF EACH EVENT AND MAPS SHOWING ROUTE AND TERRAIN DURING THE EVENTS. HARD BRAKING SLOWED BUT DID NOT STOP THE VEHICLE EITHER TIME. BOTH TIMES, AFTER TRAVELING SOME DISTANCE WHILE BRAKING BUT CONTINUING TO ACCELERATE WITHOUT MY FOOT ON THE ACCELERATOR, THE VEHICLE MADE A THUNKING NOISE FELT THROUGH THE FLOOR OF THE CAR AND SUDDENLY STOPPED ACCELERATING. IN THE FIRST INCIDENT THIS WAS AFTER ABOUT 2 MILES, THE SECOND TIME AFTER ABOUT A MILE. AFTER EACH INCIDENT I PHONED THE LOCAL DEALERSHIP AND WAS TOLD THAT IF THEY COULD REPLICATE THE EVENT THEY MIGHT BE ABLE TO FIGURE IT OUT. I REPORTED THE EVENTS TO CORPORATE TOYOTA AND AN INVESTIGATION WAS OPENED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO FRED ANDERSON TOYOTA OF ASHEVILLE WHERE THEY SPENT SEVERAL DAYS WITH THE CAR, INTERACTING WITH TOYOTA, WHO WAS ASKING THEM TO EXPLORE AND TEST VARIOUS THINGS RELATED TO THE DUAL PEDAL FAIL SAFE, THE COMPUTER, SNAPSHOTS OF EVENTS ON THE COMPUTER ETC. THEIR FINAL JUDGEMENT WAS THAT FLOOR MATS MAY HAVE INTERFERED, THOUGH IT WAS THE FIRST THING I CHECKED WHEN I REGAINED CONTROL OF THE CAR.

BRAKE ACTUATOR HAS FAILED. TRACTION CONTROL, ABS, BRAKE LIGHTS ILLUMINATED ON DASH. MORE EFFORT NEEDED TO ENGAGE BRAKES. THIS AFFECTS THE REGENERATIVE BRAKING AS IT NO LONGER CHARGES ON BRAKING AS IT WAS DESIGNED. CHECKED TOYOTA WEBSITE FOR RECALLS SINCE THIS IS SAFETY RELATED, AND THERE ARE NONE. WHICH IS QUITE DISTURBING. I'VE RESEARCHED PRIUS FORUMS AND THIS SEEMS TO BE AN ONGOING PROBLEM. TOYOTA ISSUED A RECALL FOR THE GENERATION 2 MODEL, HOWEVER THIS SEEMS TO BE A PROBLEM FOR GENERATION 3 MODELS AS WELL. THE PROBLEM DID OCCUR WHEN ON THE HIGHWAY TRAVELING AT 60 MPH.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNED A 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS. WHILE PARKING THE VEHICLE, IT UNEXPECTEDLY ACCELERATED AND STRUCK ANOTHER VEHICLE BEFORE CRASHING INTO AN APARTMENT UNIT. A POLICE REPORT WAS NOT FILED AND THERE WERE NO INJURIES. THE AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC, BUT THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE COULD NOT BE DETERMINED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CALLED AND PROVIDED THE CONTACT WITH AN INVESTIGATOR WHO REMOVED A BOX FROM THE VEHICLE, WHICH WOULD DETERMINE IF THE FAILURE WAS DUE TO DRIVER ERROR OR A SAFETY DEFECT. THE MANUFACTURER DETERMINED THAT IT WAS DRIVER ERROR. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 53,000.

IN THE PAST YEAR I HAVE HAD 2 OCCURRENCES OF UNINTENDED ACCELERATION. THE FIRST IN FEBRUARY OF 2016. I WAS EXITING A PARKING RAMP UP HILL AND STEPPING ON THE ACCELERATOR. I WAS DRIVING STRAIGHT THEN TURNING TO THE LEFT (90 DEGREE TURN). WHEN I TOOK MY FOOT OFF THE ACCELERATOR, THE CAR CONTINUED TO ACCELERATE AND I WAS UNABLE TO GET IT SLOWED/STOPPED FOR ABOUT A BLOCK EVEN THOUGH I WAS APPLYING HEAVY BRAKE PRESSURE. THE CAR WAS REVVING AGAINST THE BRAKE PRESSURE. NO DAMAGE OR INJURIES OCCURRED. I TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP WHERE I PURCHASED IT (PURCHASE DATE 8/3/13). THEY CHECKED THE CAR OVER AND FOUND NO APPARENT CAUSE FOR THE ACCELERATION. I TOOK THE CAR HOME, AND IT DROVE NORMALLY UNTIL 11/26/16. ON THAT DATE I WAS DRIVING VERY SLOWLY IN A FLAT PARKING LOT, AND THE CAR BEGAN ACCELERATING WITHOUT MY PUSHING THE GAS PEDAL. I WAS DRIVING STRAIGHT AND THEN TURNING TO THE RIGHT (90 DEGREE. I GOT THE CAR STOPPED IN A FEW FEET BY PRESSING EXTREMELY HARD ON THE BRAKE. MY CAR DID NOT HIT ANYTHING. TECHNICIANS FROM THE DEALERSHIP HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO FIND A CAUSE AND I HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO GET PAST TOYOTA'S CUSTOMER SERVICE DEPARTMENT TO ESCALATE THE ISSUE FOR MORE DETAILED DIAGNOSTICS. I HAVE ATTACHED THE TIMELINE OF TRYING TO GET THE CAR DIAGNOSED AND THE ISSUE ESCALATED AS WELL AS WHY I DON'T THINK USER ERROR IS A FACTOR. *TR

IT TOOK AT LEAST TWO ATTEMPTS AT PUSHING THE BRAKE PEDDLE BEFORE THE CAR CAME TO A STOP. AND, TO BE HONEST, THE GUARDRAIL THE CAR HIT HELPED ACTUALLY STOP THE VEHICLE. IT WAS TOTALLY UNEXPECTED AND EXTREMELY SCARY. IN HINDSIGHT, I SHOULD HAVE SUSPECTED THAT THERE MAY BE A PROBLEM WHEN I NOTICED THAT SOMETIMES WHEN APPLYING THE BRAKES TO COME TO A STOP THERE WOULD BE A FEELING OF THE BRAKES SLIPPING AND THE CAR LURCHING FORWARD A BIT. THE DEALERSHIP HAD THE CAR TOWED IN TO GET CHECKED OUT, AND I HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT THEY WILL NOTIFY TOYOTA. IN THE MEANTIME I AM CONCERNED ABOUT THE SAFETY OF THIS CAR!

THIS BEGAN OCCURRING AFTER I TOOK MY VEHICLE TO TOYOTA OF CLERMONT, FLORIDA FOR A ROUTINE SERVICE ON 3/31/2014. WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS THERE, THE DEALERSHIP ALSO PERFORMED A RECALL ON THE VEHICLE. THIS RECALL IS REFERENCED AS: TECH(S) : 20799 RECALL EOE MOTOR GENERATOR AND POWER MANAGEMENT UPDATE PERFORM SOFTWARE UPDATE FOR MG ECU AND POWER MANAGEMENT ECU AGG09A 0.7 AS OF 8/5/2014 MY VEHICLE HAS HAD UNINTENDED ACCELERATION ON 4 OCCASIONS. IN 3 OF THE 4 I KNOW IT HAS OCCURRED AS I RELEASED THE BRAKE. THIS RELEASE IS CONFIRMED BY THE FACT THAT IT IS NECESSARY TO REAPPLY THE BRAKE TO STOP THE ACCELERATION. THE 4TH OCCURRENCE MAY ALSO HAVE OCCURRED AFTER A BRAKE RELEASE. I HAVE ATTEMPTED TO RESOLVE THIS PROBLEM VIA BOTH MY LOCAL TOYOTA DEALER AND TOYOTA CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE CENTER AT 1 800 331-4331. I AM BEING TOLD THE PROBLEM IS OPERATOR ERROR. I HAVE DONE THE RESEARCH TO SEE IF THIS IS EVEN POSSIBLE. I DO NOT DRIVE WITH TWO FEET, SAID DID NOT THINK IT WAS THAT. HE THEN REFERRED ME TO THE TOYOTA CORPORATE LINE, I HAVE A FILE WITH THEM ABOUT THE ACCELERATION ISSUE. WHILE RETURNING FROM WORK AT 5:30 PM, 02/18/14 ON HIGHWAY 90 WEST TO ALBANY, NY, WITH CRUISE CONTROL SET TO 50 MPH, THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL GOT STUCK ON MY 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS. THE PEDAL DID NOT RETURN BACK TO ITS ORIGINAL POSITION EVEN WHEN I TURNED OFF CRUISE CONTROL. I SPONTANEOUSLY TAPPED THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL IN THE HOPE OF RELEASING BUT DID NOT YIELD ANY RESULTS AND THE VEHICLE MAINTAINED ITS SPEED. APPLYING BRAKES MADE NO EFFECT AND DID NOT CURTAIL THE CAR. IT CONTINUED TO MOVE WITH ALMOST THE SAME SPEED EVEN WHEN BRAKE PEDAL DEPRESSED. I HAD NO CONTROL ON MY CAR IN ONE OF BUSIEST FREEWAYS. I CONTINUOUSLY APPLIED THE BRAKES AND TRIED TO MERGE TO THE RIGHT MOST LANE WITH HAZARD BLINKERS ON. IT TOOK MORE THAN 5 MILES PANIC RIDE TRYING TO AVOID TRUCKS AND OTHER CARS TO MERGE TO THE RIGHT LANE. EVEN WITH THE BRAKE FULLY DEPRESSED, THE 2010 PRIUS DID NOT SLOW DOWN AND I MANAGED TO REACH THE SHOULDER LANE WHICH HAD GRAVEL & SNOW. THEN I PRESSED PARK BUTTON AND SWITCHED OFF THE ENGINE BY PRESSING THE POWER BUTTON. I COULD FEEL THE WHEELS LOCK UP BUT THE PRIUS CONTINUED TO MOVE WITH STRONG RUBBER BURNING SMELL. FINALLY, I ENGAGED THE PARKING BREAKS TO STOP IT FROM MOVING INTO THE FREEWAY. AFTER COMPLETE STOP, WITH DIFFICULTY I MANUALLY PULLED UP THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL. THIS ENTIRE ORDEAL WAS SHOCKING AND AN UNBELIEVABLE NARROW ESCAPE FROM A MAJOR CATASTROPHIC EVENT. I THANKED GOD & CALLED 911 AND THE HIGHWAY PATROL POLICE CAME TO THE SPOT AND PROMPTLY HELPED TO MOVE THE VEHICLE AND MYSELF FROM THE FREEWAY TRAFFIC. THE 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS WAS MOVED TO TOYOTA DEALER SERVICE CENTER WHERE I PURCHASED THE CAR & PERFORMED EVERY SCHEDULED MAINTENANCE SERVICE PUNCTUALLY. THIS WAS THE SAME TYPE ACCELERATION THAT CAUSED ALL THE PRIOR ACCIDENTS. I HAVE REPORTED THIS TO TOYOTA... AND NOW YOU. HOPEFULLY YOU WILL HELP ME. MY PRIUS IS IN THE CARPORT. IT HAS NOT BEEN MOVED. BUT BEFORE I TOOK ANY ACTION, THIS PRIUS SUDDENLY STARTED ACCELERATING, IT WENT WILDLY, AND TURNED MORE THAN 360 DEGREE BACKWARD IN THE PARKING LOT IN JUST A FEW SECONDS. SINCE THE CAR PARKED BETWEEN A BUILDING AND A SLOP, FROM THE FRONT MIRROR, FIRST, I SAW THE BUILDING WALL AND GLASSES, THEN I SAW THE SLOPE, THEN I SAW A CAR PARKED CLOSE TO MY CAR: NO! DON'T HIT THAT CAR! THAT IS THE LAST THING I REMEMBER. BECAUSE OF THE FAST TURNING OF THE CAR AND BECAUSE I WAS SO TERRIBLY SCARED, I LOST CONSCIOUS AFTER THAT UNTIL THE PRIUS HIT THE TRUCK AND BOUNCED BACK AND STOPPED BY ITSELF. AFTER A FEW SECONDS, I WOKE UP AND REALIZED: I AM STILL ALIVE. I GOT OFF THE CAR AND SAW PRIUS PASSED THE TWO CURBS AND HIT THE TRUCK. THE TWO TIRES ON THE DRIVER SIDE GOT FLAT BECAUSE THEY PASSED THE CURB VERY FAST. I WAS SO SCARED THAT I COULDN'T RECALL OF ANYTHING FOR A FEW DAYS UNTIL WEEKEND. WHY DID THE CAR LOSE CONTROL? ONE MAY ARGUE THAT I STEPPED ON THE ACCELERATOR. THIS COULD HAPPEN TO NEW DRIVERS, BUT NOT TO ME BECAUSE I HAVE BEEN DRIVING FOR SO MANY YEARS AND ALWAYS A GOOD DRIVER. MANY TIMES I SAW A CAR ON MY WAY WHEN I WAS BACKING, I ALWAYS STOPPED RIGHT AWAY. AND I WAS HEALTHY IN A NORMAL DAY IN NORMAL MODE, ALERT AS USUAL. WHY WOULD I STEP ON ACCELERATOR WHEN BACKING? EVEN IF I MIS-STEPPED ON THE ACCELERATOR, I CAN ALWAYS SWITCH TO BRAKE RIGHT AWAY. BUT I COULD?T DO ANYTHING ABOUT THE CAR ON THE DAY. IT WAS OUT OF CONTROL COMPLETELY. AT ABOUT 7:45 AM SUNDAY MAY 23, I WAS DRIVING WEST ON HAMBURG TURNPIKE IN WAYNE, GENTLY ACCELERATING TO GET BETTER MILEAGE, THE LIGHT AT BERDAN AVE AND HAMBURG HAD JUST TURNED GREEN, SO I ACCELERATED SLOWLY TO ABOUT 40 MPH. AT THIS POINT, I HEAR A SHRIEKING BEEP AND THE CAR LURCHES FORWARD AS THE BRAKES WERE APPLIED. THE DASH LIGHTS UP WITH THE USUAL MESSAGE SQUARE AND THE WORD BRAKE! IN THE BOX. I LOOK IN ALL DIRECTIONS AND SAW NOTHING UNTIL I BOUNCED OVER THE CONSTRUCTION PLATES. THE BOX WAS GONE, AND THE CAR RESUMED NORMAL OPERATION. I WAS PUZZLED. I THOUGHT IT COULD BE THE PLATES. I CHECKED WITH MY SON AND HE REMINDED ME THAT IN THE MODEL 5 WE HAVE RADAR CRASH AVOIDANCE. UPON FURTHER REVIEW I WANTED MORE INFORMATION. I TOOK MY SON, AND A CAMERA, AND DROVE THE ROUTE AGAIN. EUREKA! IN ALL THREE ATTEMPTS, THE BRAKES WERE APPLIED. I HAVE PICTURES OF THE DASH, AND THE PLATES. DID THE CAR PERFORM CORRECTLY? THE SECOND PLATE IS NOT FLUSH TO THE ROAD AND STICKS OUT TO THE LEFT. I THINK OTHER DRIVERS NEED TO BE AWARE OF THIS POSSIBILITY SO THEY DO NOT PANIC WHEN IT HAPPENS. THE CRASH AVOIDANCE SYSTEM COULD HAVE BEEN DOING ITS JOB CORRECTLY. I CONTACTED WAYNE POLICE ABOUT THE INCIDENT AND THE DISPATCHER SAID AFTER CONSULTATION ' IT IS A COUNTY ROAD, CALL THE PASSAIC COUNTY ROAD DEPARTMENT. MY CAR COMPUTER WILL HAVE RECORDED ALL 3 INCIDENTS. THE THIRD WAS NOT AS BIG A JOLT BECAUSE THE DRIVER AHEAD OF ME HAD SLOWED CONSIDERABLY WHEN HE SAW THE PLATES. THERE IS A WARNING SIGN THAT IS BEYOND THE PLATES IN THE PICTURE. IN THE MIDDLE OF THE CURVE, WITH BOTH FEET STILL NOT ON EITHER GAS OR BRAKE, I FELT AND HEARD A NOTABLE SURGE OF HARD ACCELERATION DESPITE BOTH FEET BEING OFF THE GAS AND BRAKE. MY WIFE IN THE PASSENGER SEAT ALSO NOTICED THE SURGE. I IMMEDIATELY BRAKED HARD. THE CAR SLOWED SAFELY, AND THE UNREQUESTED ACCELERATION SEEMED TO STOP AS SOON AS I ENGAGED THE BRAKE PEDAL. NOTHING WAS TOUCHING THE ACCELERATOR BEFORE THE SURGE, DURING THE SURGE, OR WHEN THE SURGE ENDED AS I BRAKED - NOT A FLOOR MAT, NOT A STRAY OBJECT, NOT MY FOOT. THIS IS THE FIRST TIME WE HAVE EXPERIENCED THIS EXACT PATTERN OF SYMPTOMS. IN THE PAST, BEFORE THE BRAKE SOFTWARE RECALL WAS DOWNLOADED TO OUR CAR, WE HAD MANY EPISODES OF TEMPORARY LOSS OF BRAKING POWER ON BUMPY ROADS. AT LEAST ONE OF THOSE PRIOR EPISODES HAD UNEXPLAINED ACCELERATION ACCOMPANY THE TEMPORARY BRAKING FAILURE ON A BUMPY ROAD. THREE DAYS AGO THE CAR WAS TEST DRIVEN BY A TOYOTA DEALERSHIP SERVICE DEPARTMENT EMPLOYEE, WHO REPORTED USING CRUISE CONTROL 6 TIMES AND TURNING CRUISE CONTROL OFF BY APPLYING THE FOOT BRAKE; THE REPORT WAS 'CRUISE CONTROL SHUT OFF IMMEDIATELY WHEN ENOUGH PRESSURE APPLIED [EMPHASIS ADDED] TO PEDAL.' ~ ON SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 27, 2010 AFTER THE CAR HAD BEEN SET AT 60 IN CRUISE CONTROL FOR SOME TIME THERE WAS A STRONG ODOR (LIKE A CAR BEING DRIVEN WITH THE "HAND" BRAKE ON, BUT MY CAR'S WASN'T ENGAGED) WHILE ON A DRY FREEWAY DOWNGRADE (GRADUAL, NOT STEEP). SENT AN E-MAIL TO CUSTOMER SERVICE ADVISING OF THE SITUATION. STILL DID NOT HEAR BACK. ON SATURDAY 3/6 I CALLED AGAIN. WAS AGAIN ON HOLD X 1 HOUR AND TOLD CUSTOMER SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE OF WHAT HAPPENED - THEY APOLOGIZED AND SAID THEY DID NOT HAVE MY CONTACT INFORMATION. WAS TOLD I WOULD GET A CALL BACK BY 3/9. DID FINALLY SPEAK WITH AN AGENT ON 3/8 WHO NOW TELLS ME THAT I WILL GET A CALL WITHIN 10 DAYS. AT THAT TIME, I WILL BE OFFERED AN INSPECTION APPOINTMENT WITHIN THE FOLLOWING 30 DAYS. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE THEY COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE FAILURE. THE DEALER STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS OPERATING AS IT WAS DESIGNED. THERE WERE NO REPAIRS MADE TO THE VEHICLE TO DATE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 200 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 1,398.

I TOLD HER ABOUT THE CRUISE CONTROL DANGER, WHERE THE CAR HAD BEEN GOING ALONG NICELY ON CRUISE, BUT SUDDENLY RAPIDLY ACCELERATED WHEN, ON AUGUST 11, 2009, I WAS ON THE TRIP BETWEEN NEW JERSEY AND ILLINOIS COMING THROUGH THE TENNESSEE/KENTUCKY AREA. I HAD BEEN TRAVELING AT ABOUT 65MPH ON CRUISE AND IT RAPIDLY ACCELERATED TO OVER 80MPH AND I PANICKED WHILE TRYING TO GET IT TO SLOW DOWN. I TRIED SLOWING IT DOWN USING THE CRUISE BUTTON, THEN DEPRESSED THE CRUISE OFF BUTTON. DIDN'T WORK. IT DID NOT RESPOND IMMEDIATELY TO THE BRAKE UNTIL I BRAKED REALLY HARD. THEREFORE, MY DRIVING IT WAS SEVERELY LIMITED TO DRIVING AT VERY LOW SPEEDS IN TOWN. OTHER UNINTENDED ACCELERATION HAS OCCURRED EVEN WHEN NOT USING THE CRUISE. SOMETHING FINALLY STOPPED IT, BUT I DON'T KNOW WHAT. THE NEXT SCARE OCCURRED AFTER IT SNOWED. I DROVE SLOWLY ON THE PLOWED ROAD, BUT WHEN THE CAR ENCOUNTERED SNOWY LUMPS IT RAPIDLY ACCELERATED LUNGING FORWARD AGAIN. MY ATTEMPTS TO STOP CAUSED ME TO SKID DANGEROUSLY INTO ONCOMING TRAFFIC LANE. THIS IS FRIGHTENING FOR A FEW BRIEF SECONDS, ESPECIALLY IN HEAVY TRAFFIC. WHILE DRIVING MY WIFE'S 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS FROM COLORADO SPRINGS TO ALAMOSA WE EXPERIENCED THE FOLLOWING ANOMALY. WE WERE ON THE FREEWAY (I-25) DRIVING SOUTH ON LEVEL TERRAIN WITH THE CRUISE CONTROL SET AT ~70MPH. THE THREE INCIDENTS I HAVE MENTIONED WERE DURING WINTER AND DURING POSSIBLY ICY CONDITIONS. HOWEVER, I KNOW HOW TO OPERATE A VEHICLE ON ICE, AND I AM AWARE OF HOW ABS BRAKING FEELS. DURING EACH INCIDENT, I WOULD BE BRAKING SLOWLY, WITH PLENTY OF TIME, THEN HIT A BUMP, AND EXPERIENCE A FEELING OF SKIDDING WHILE THE BRAKES DISENGAGED FOR A FEW SECONDS. I ALMOST HIT A PEDESTRIAN AT A TOLL BOOTH, A CONCRETE DIVIDER DURING HIGHWAY DRIVING, AND ANOTHER MOTORIST AT A SUDDEN STOP CONDITION ALONG ANOTHER HIGHWAY. PLEASE INVESTIGATE THESE CARS. THIS IS ESPECIALLY DANGEROUS WHEN COMING TO A STOP AT A NEW YORK CITY PEDESTRIAN CROSSWALK OR TRYING TO SLOW DOWN WITH A CAR CLOSE IN FRONT OF YOU. I BROUGHT THE CAR INTO THE DEALERSHIP AND HAD IT EVALUATED BY TOYOTA'S FIELD TECHNICAL SPECIALIST WHO REPORTED THE FOLLOWING, ""WHEN [THE CAR] SENSES IMPENDING WHEEL SLIP, IT WILL FIRST DISABLE THE REGENERATIVE BRAKES. WHEN IT DOES THAT IT FEELS LIKE THE CAR SORT OF ACCELERATES BECAUSE YOU LOST THE REGENERATIVE BRAKING AND YOU'RE USING THE BRAKE ASSIST THAT YOU HAVE FROM YOUR FOOT. SO THAT IS 'NORMAL OPERATION' ON THE SYSTEM. IT IS WORKING AS DESIGNED." DESPITE THE EXPLANATIONS FOR WHY THIS IS HAPPENING AND WHETHER OR NOT THIS IS ?NORMAL OPERATION?, THE BOTTOM LINE IS, IF THE CAR IS NOT STOPPING WHEN IT SHOULD, THE SAFETY OF PASSENGERS AND PEDESTRIANS IS IN JEOPARDY. I CALLED AND WROTE TWO CERTIFIED LETTERS TO TOYOTA'S CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE DEPARTMENT AND TO AKIO TOYOTA, AND RECEIVED A PHONE CALL FROM AN EXECUTIVE ANALYST FROM THE PRESIDENT'S OFFICE. NO TOYOTA REPRESENTATIVE WOULD DO ANYTHING IN REGARDS TO THE PROBLEM--THEY MAINTAIN THAT THE BRAKING OPERATION IS NORMAL. MY NEW 2010 PRIUS ACCELERATED ON IT'S OWN AS I WAS BRAKING AND SLOWLY APPROACHING THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME THAT WAS STOPPED AT A STOP LIGHT QUITE SOME DISTANCE AWAY. MY CAR HAD ALMOST COME TO A COMPLETE STOP WHEN SUDDENLY THE ENGINE REVVED ON IT'S OWN AS MY FOOT WAS STILL ON THE BRAKE. I HAD TO PRESS DOWN SO HARD ON THE BREAK TO KEEP IT FROM SURGING FORWARD THAT THE ABS LIGHT CAME ON AND THEN THE CAR'S REV WENT DOWN ON IT'S OWN AND ALL WAS BACK TO NORMAL AND HADN'T HAPPENED AGAIN SINCE. I BROUGHT THE CAR TO THE DEALER AND THEY KEPT IT FOR TWO DAYS BUT DIDN'T FIND ANYTHING WRONG WITH IT. I HAVE TWO SMALL CHILDREN AND BOUGHT THIS CAR FOR A NUMBER OF REASONS, SAFETY BEING ONE OF THE IMPORTANT ONES. I AM NO LONGER FEELING SAFE. THIS WAS NOT THE FLOOR MATS, OR A SUDDEN STOP MISTAKING ONE PEDAL FOR ANOTHER, OR ANY OTHER FORM OF DRIVER ERROR. THIS WAS THE CAR!
