NHTSA Campaign: 14V053000
Component: HYBRID PROPULSION SYSTEM: INVERTER
Toyota is recalling certain model year 2010 through 2014 Prius vehicles. In the affected vehicles, the Intelligent Power Module (IPM) inside the inverter module (a component of the hybrid system) contains transistors that may become damaged from high operating temperatures. If this occurs, various warning lamps will be illuminated on the instrument panel and the vehicle will have reduced power allowing it to only drive a short distance.
Risk: The vehicle may enter a fail-safe/limp-home mode that limits the drivability of the vehicle. The hybrid system could also shut down completely resulting in a vehicle stall, increasing the risk of a crash.
Fix: Toyota will notify owners and dealers will update the software for both the motor/generator control electronic control unit (ECU) and the hybrid control ECU, free of charge. If an owner experiences a failure of the inverter before the vehicle receives updated software, the dealer will repair or replace the inverter assembly with a new one at no charge. Owner-Reported Issues (20 of 2815)
Service Brakes →8 issues
Your brake warning lights came on and your brake pedal became soft and unresponsive while driving, requiring much more pressure to stop and significantly increasing stopping distance. A Toyota dealership confirmed the brake booster and brake booster pump assembly failed (error code C1391), which is the same defect Toyota previously addressed in a Customer Support Program for 2010–2015 Prius models—but your vehicle's warranty period for this fix has expired despite normal mileage. The sudden loss of braking power created an unsafe driving situation that could have caused a collision. Fixing this will require replacing the brake booster and brake booster pump assembly.

Your 2010 Prius had its brake cylinder assembly and brake booster pump replaced in 2019 under a Toyota recall program due to a known braking system defect. As of February 2026, these replacement components are now failing again at 224,000 miles—sooner than the original faulty parts failed. Toyota has refused to provide any warranty coverage or assistance for this repeat failure.

Your brake pedal became very hard to push and your brakes didn't work effectively, meaning you needed more distance to stop—creating a collision risk. Multiple warning lights came on at once (brake system, ABS, check engine, battery, steering, tire pressure, and stability control). The brake booster pump, which helps your brakes work, had internal damage that allowed nitrogen gas to leak into the brake fluid, reducing braking power. This same part had already been replaced under a recall, but it failed again after only 41,000 more miles, suggesting the recall fix didn't work properly. Fixing this will likely require replacing the brake booster pump assembly with a new or properly designed unit.

Your brake system has developed a leak in the accumulator (a pressurized component that stores brake fluid), which triggers a warning code C1391 and causes the brake booster pump to run continuously. When this happens, your brakes feel suddenly different because the regenerative braking system stops working. This is a known issue that Toyota has recalled before, but if your car is outside the recall/warranty period, you'll need to pay for the repair yourself.

Electrical System,service Brakes,forward Collision Avoidance →1 issue
Your car has two unresolved recalls that dealers won't fix for free. Your brake system is failing—the booster, master cylinder, and ABS pump are leaking brake fluid continuously and making noise, which is dangerous when driving on highways. Additionally, your DC inverter module is draining batteries every few months and the hybrid system may shut down completely, causing loss of control. The dealer says they won't repair either issue without an error code showing, even though both are active recalls and the brake problem poses a serious safety risk. Fixing these recalls will require the dealer to replace the brake booster assembly, master cylinder, ABS pump components, and the DC inverter module.

Electrical System,unknown Or Other,service Brakes →1 issue
Your 2010 Prius has a brake booster that was subject to a Toyota recall that expired in 2020 before you purchased the vehicle. The dealership did not inform you of this recall or the issue when you bought the car in August 2020. You're experiencing a DC inverter sensor and brake booster problem that is draining your 12-volt battery completely every month, and you're also noticing noise when the car is off. The dealership says they cannot perform the recall repair because it has expired, leaving you unable to get the issue fixed.

Service Brakes, Hydraulic, hybrid Propulsion System →1 issue
While driving at 70 mph, your Prius suddenly jerked, failed to accelerate normally, and the steering wheel became stiff before the engine stalled. After reconnecting the battery to restart the vehicle, you noticed warning lights for the hybrid system and ABS, and your car would no longer go faster than 65 mph. The dealer suggested an ABS system failure may be responsible. This issue has occurred repeatedly over years without being fully diagnosed or repaired.

Service Brakes, forward Collision Avoidance →1 issue
Your car's regular brakes and forward collision warning system stopped working suddenly without any warning signs. This happened while driving, leaving you without braking assistance or collision alerts. The system may need diagnostic scanning to identify electrical or sensor failures, followed by replacement of faulty components.

Steering,unknown Or Other,service Brakes →1 issue
Your car's steering, traction control, brake, and ABS warning lights are turning on and off intermittently, and your brakes feel spongy and unresponsive, making it unsafe to brake properly. Your mechanic suspects a brake fluid leak, but your brake fluid level appears normal; however, this combination of warning lights and soft brakes can affect your steering control and potentially cause an accident. The fix will likely involve diagnosing the brake system for internal leaks, sensor issues, or problems with the ABS/brake control module, and may require replacement of brake components or fluid system repairs.

Electrical System,service Brakes →1 issue
Your Prius may experience intermittent failures in the regenerative braking system due to a leak in the brake accumulator, causing your brakes to suddenly lose power while driving. When this happens, your brake pedal becomes soft and you must press it hard to engage the physical brake pads, which can cause skidding and creates a dangerous situation—especially at highway speeds in traffic. Although the warning code may occasionally clear on its own, a whirring sound indicates the part is still damaged and the problem will return without warning. Fixing this typically requires replacing the brake master cylinder and accumulator assembly, then recalibrating the system.

Service Brakes, Hydraulic, service Brakes →1 issue
Your brake system warning lights (ABS, brakes, and stability control) came on when you pressed the brake pedal. A mechanic diagnosed the problem as a faulty brake booster and accumulator that need replacement. Toyota said your vehicle wasn't covered by a recall for this issue, and the recall period has expired. The problem occurred at 172,000 miles.
