Southeast Toyota Distributors, LLC (SET) is recalling certain 2005-2011 4Runner, Highlander, Sequoia, and Sienna, 2005-2010 Avalon and Tundra, 2006-2008 Camry Solara, 2006-2010 Highlander hybrid, 2006-2011 Rav4 and Tacoma, 2007-2010 FJ Cruiser, 2007-2011 Camry hybrid, 2009-2010 Venza, 2010-2012 Prius, 1988-1990 and 2005-2010 Camry, and 1989 and 2009-2010 Corolla vehicles equipped with aftermarket accessory seat heaters with a copper strand heating element. The electrical wiring in the seat heaters may be damaged when the seat cushion is compressed.
Risk: If damaged, the copper strand heating element may short circuit, increasing the risk of a fire.
Fix: SET will notify owners, and dealers will disconnect the seat heaters, free of charge, and refund the purchase price of the seat heater accessory. The recall began on July 14, 2016. Owners may contact SET customer service at 1-866-405-4226. SET number for this recall is SET16B.

TOYOTA IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2004 AVALON VEHICLES; 2004 AND 2005 CAMRY, CAMRY SOLARA, HIGHLANDER, AND SIENNA VEHICLES, 2006 HIGHLANDER HYBRID; 2004 AND 2005 LEXUS ES330 AND RX330; AND 2006 LEXUS RX400H VEHICLES MANUFACTURED FROM JUNE 1, 2004 THROUGH MARCH 31, 2005, EQUIPPED WITH THE 1MZ-FE OR 3MZ-FE ENGINE. THE AMOUNT OF ADHESIVE AGENT APPLIED BETWEEN THE OUTER RING AND THE TORSIONAL RUBBER DAMPER (INNER RING) IN THE CRANKSHAFT PULLEY MAY BE INADEQUATE. IF THE ADHESIVE IS INSUFFICIENT, THERE IS A POSSIBILITY THAT THE OUTER RING MAY BECOME MISALIGNED AND IT MAY NOT PROPERLY ROTATE WITH THE INNER RING, CAUSING NOISE AND/OR ILLUMINATION OF THE BATTERY DISCHARGE INDICATOR LIGHT.
Risk: IN SOME CASES, THE BELT FOR THE POWER STEERING PUMP MAY BECOME DETACHED FROM THE PULLEY WHICH COULD RESULT IN A LOSS OF POWER STEERING AND A SUDDEN INCREASE IN STEERING EFFORT, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
Fix: TOYOTA WILL NOTIFY OWNERS, AND DEALERS WILL CHECK THE CRANKSHAFT PULLEY TO IDENTIFY WHETHER IT WAS PRODUCED BY THE U.S. SUPPLIER. IF SO, THE DEALER WILL REPLACE THE PULLEY WITH A NEW ONE AT NO CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING EARLY JANUARY 2012. OWNERS MAY CONTACT TOYOTA AT 1-800-331-4331.
NHTSA Campaign: 11V112000
Component: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL:ACCELERATOR PEDAL
TOYOTA IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2004-2006 HIGHLANDER, HIGHLANDER HYBRID, AND MODEL YEAR 2004-2007 LEXUS RX330, RX350, AND RX400H VEHICLES. IF THE FORWARD RETENTION CLIP USED TO SECURE THE FLOOR CARPET COVER, WHICH IS LOCATED IN FRONT OF THE CENTER CONSOLE, IS NOT INSTALLED PROPERLY THE COVER MAY LEAN TOWARD THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL AND INTERFERE WITH THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL ARM.
Risk: IF THIS OCCURS, THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL MAY TEMPORARILY BECOME STUCK IN A PARTIALLY DEPRESSED POSITION RATHER THAN RETURN TO THE IDLE POSITION. A STUCK ACCELERATOR PEDAL MAY RESULT IN UNINTENDED AND SUSTAINED VEHICLE SPEEDS AND MAKE IT DIFFICULT TO STOP, INCREASING THE RISK OF A VEHICLE CRASH.
Fix: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE FLOOR CARPET COVER WITH A NEWLY DESIGNED ONE FREE OR CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING MARCH 2011. OWNERS MAY CONTACT TOYOTA AT 1-800-331-4331.

GULF STATES TOYOTA IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2005-2010 VEHICLES FOR FAILING TO COMPLY WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 110, "TIRE SELECTION AND RIMS." THESE VEHICLES WERE SOLD BETWEEN SEPTEMBER 1, 2005 AND JUNE 2, 2008 WITHOUT THE REQUISITE LOAD CARRYING CAPACITY MODIFICATION LABELS.
Risk: THIS DOES NOT MEET THE STANDARD REQUIREMENTS.
Fix: DEALERS WILL MAIL TO CONSUMERS THE CORRECTED LABEL OR THE CUSTOMER WILL HAVE THE OPTION FOR DEALERS TO INSTALL THE LABEL FREE OF CHARGE. DEALERS WILL ALSO CORRECT THE OWNER'S MANUAL. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON MAY 27, 2010. OWNERS MAY CONTACT GULF STATES TOYOTA AT 713-580-3300.

ON CERTAIN SPORT UTILITY AND HYBRID VEHICLES, THE TWO RETAINING CLIPS FOR THE DRIVER'S SIDE FORWARD CENTER CONSOLE CAN BECOME LOOSE. IF BOTH CLIPS SEPARATE FROM THE FLOOR CARPET COVER, THE COVER MAY LEAN TOWARD THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL, CAUSING INTERFERENCE WITH THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL ROD.
Risk: THIS CONDITION MAY INTERFERE WITH THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL RETURNING TO THE IDLE POSITION INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
Fix: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE TWO FLOOR CARPET COVER RETAINING CLIPS FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON JULY 24, 2006, AND SHOULD BE COMPLETED BY EARLY SEPTEMBER 2006. OWNERS MAY CONTACT TOYOTA AT 1-800-331-4331 OR LEXUS AT 1-800-255-3987.

Component: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:FOUNDATION COMPONENTS:MASTER CYLINDER
TOYOTA IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2005-2006 AVALON, MODEL YEAR 2004-2006 HIGHLANDER, MODEL YEAR 2004-2006 LEXUS RX, AND MODEL YEAR 2006 LEXUS GS AND IS VEHICLES. BRAKE FLUID CONTAINING POLYMERS IS USED THAT ACTS AS LUBRICANTS FOR CERTAIN BRAKE SYSTEM COMPONENTS. IF REPLACEMENT BRAKE FLUID IS USED THAT DOES NOT CONTAIN SUCH POLYMERS, OR THAT CONTAINS ONLY SMALL AMOUNTS, A PART OF THE RUBBER SEAL LOCATED AT THE REAR OF THE BRAKE MASTER CYLINDER MAY BECOME DRY, AND THE SEAL MAY CURL DURING MOVEMENT OF THE PISTON. IF THIS OCCURS, A SMALL AMOUNT OF BRAKE FLUID COULD SLOWLY LEAK FROM THE SEAL INTO THE BRAKE BOOSTER.
Risk: A LEAK OF BRAKE FLUID COULD LEAD TO A CHANGE IN BRAKE PEDAL FEEL AND OVERTIME A DEGRADATION IN BRAKING PERFORMANCE INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
Fix: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE SEAL WITH A NEWLY DESIGNED ONE. THIS SERVICE WILL BE PERFORMED FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON NOVEMBER 15, 2010. OWNERS MAY CONTACT TOYOTA AT 1-800-331-4331 AND LEXUS AT 1-800-255-3987.
Owner-Reported Issues (20 of 225)
Service Brakes →2 issues
Your brake pedal is going all the way to the floor when you press it, though it sometimes works normally on the next attempt. Your mechanic found a small leak inside the brake booster area of the master brake cylinder, which was previously replaced under a Toyota recall. The master brake cylinder will need to be replaced again to restore proper braking function.

Your brake fluid level drops significantly and needs refilling every 500 miles, likely due to a leak in the brake master cylinder. This is a serious issue because low brake fluid can cause brake failure, which nearly caused you to hit another vehicle. The fix will involve inspecting the brake master cylinder for leaks and replacing it if damage is found.

Engine →2 issues
Your vehicle's automatic engine stop-start system at traffic lights and drive-thru lines sometimes fails to restart the engine when you release the brake, leaving your car unable to move. While you haven't needed a jump start yet, the engine has come close to not restarting on several occasions, creating a safety concern if the vehicle stalls unexpectedly in traffic or intersections. This issue has been reported by other owners, some of whom have needed to carry jumper cables. The problem may require diagnosis and repair of the stop-start system or battery charging system.

Your engine may have developed sludge buildup inside, which happens when oil breaks down and accumulates over time. This can restrict oil flow and cause engine damage if left unaddressed. Your mechanic can diagnose this by checking your oil and may recommend an engine flush or oil change to help clear it out.

Electrical System →2 issues
You discovered that your 2005 Toyota Highlander's odometer reading was incorrect after purchase. The odometer showed 123,000 miles when you bought it, but Carfax records indicated the vehicle actually had 254,000 miles. This is a case of odometer fraud, which means the mileage was deliberately altered before the sale.

Your car's master window switch has developed an electrical short. This could prevent your windows from operating properly or cause electrical issues in that area of the vehicle. The switch assembly will likely need to be replaced to restore normal window operation.

Parking Brake →1 issue
While driving at 15 mph, you pressed the brake pedal but your vehicle accelerated instead and crashed into a fence at 20 mph. The airbags did not deploy during the crash, and you sustained injuries including lost teeth and back pain requiring hospitalization and dental work. The vehicle was totaled and never diagnosed by a mechanic or dealer. This suggests a potential issue with the brake system's ability to stop the vehicle or the accelerator becoming uncontrollably active when braking.

Air Bags →1 issue
Your car was involved in a T-bone collision at an intersection while turning left. The airbag failed to inflate during the crash, which resulted in injuries to occupants' arms and legs. A fire also occurred following the collision. The airbag system may need complete inspection and replacement of failed airbag components.

Electrical System,air Bags,structure →1 issue
Your vehicle was struck from behind at high speed in a multi-car collision, but your airbags failed to deploy even though the airbag warning light illuminated. This is a critical safety failure, as airbags are designed to protect you during exactly this type of crash. The issue likely involves a problem with the airbag sensor system, wiring, or deployment mechanism that prevented the bags from inflating when needed.

Power Train →1 issue
Your transmission is leaking fluid from the vent area onto the hot exhaust system. This is caused by a defective seal that allows fluid to escape. If the transmission loses all its fluid, it could suddenly fail while driving, which would be dangerous. The fix will involve replacing the defective transmission vent seal to stop the leak.

Electrical System,exterior Lighting,unknown Or Other →1 issue
Your windows, moonroof, turn signals, reverse lights, running lights, and brake lights all stopped working at the same time, and your automatic headlight feature no longer functions—you now have to manually control the headlights or risk draining the battery. The hazard flashers still work, but the turn signals do not, and all visible fuses appear intact. Since multiple systems failed simultaneously, the issue is likely a faulty relay or a bad ground wire connection rather than individual switch failures.

Structure →1 issue
Your 2005 Toyota Highlander's rear subframe was found to be heavily rusted when the vehicle was lifted at a mechanic's shop around 150,000 miles. The mechanic determined that the rusted subframe would need to be replaced. No warning lights indicated this problem before it was discovered.

Child Seat →1 issue
Your child became unable to unlatch the seat belt from a Mifold booster seat (Model MF01/US, made May 2019) because the belt was extremely tight and wouldn't loosen. You had to cut the seat belt to free your child from the restraint. The seat belt was not replaced after this incident.

Exterior Lighting →1 issue
Your rear brake lights keep going out because the 10-amp fuse for that circuit keeps blowing, leaving you with no rear lights at all while driving. You've been replacing the fuse repeatedly but haven't found what's causing it to blow. The underlying cause—likely a short circuit or damaged wiring—needs to be identified and repaired.

Parking Brake, electronic Stability Control (esc) →1 issue
After your Highlander was in a crash and repaired, several months later warning lights for the stability control and parking brake started appearing on your dashboard, and your radio and clock began malfunctioning. The dealer identified a faulty body control module as the cause and warned that other failures might follow. The fix will require replacing the body control module, which is the computer that controls multiple electrical systems in your vehicle.

Seats →1 issue
Your passenger seat's heating element overheated and burned through the seat material. While this didn't cause a fire, the heated seat system has failed and caused damage to the seat itself. The heating element will likely need to be replaced or the entire seat may need to be re-upholstered.

Electrical System, vehicle Speed Control →1 issue
Your front passenger window works intermittently, and your rear windows won't open or close electronically. You took your vehicle to the dealer for diagnosis, and while your car is included in a separate recall for vehicle speed control, the manufacturer says your vehicle is excluded from the recall that would cover the power window switch failure. The dealer hasn't confirmed when they can repair the window issues. The fix will likely involve replacing the power window switch or electrical components controlling the windows.
