Owner-Reported Issues (20 of 143)
Vehicle Speed Control →4 issues
Your vehicle suddenly accelerated on its own while traveling at 35 mph on a city street, and you were unable to stop it from accelerating. The vehicle crashed into another vehicle as a result. An independent witness confirmed your account of the unintended acceleration.

Your accelerator became stuck while driving at 70 mph, and you couldn't slow down or brake the car. After about half a minute, something fell from under the hood and the engine lost all power, forcing you to coast to a stop. Smoke then came from the engine compartment and the car caught fire, causing complete engine destruction. The issue likely involves a mechanical accelerator linkage failure combined with an engine fire, and will require a complete engine replacement or rebuild.

Your Toyota Corolla was involved in a crash that totaled the vehicle, but the airbag failed to deploy when it should have. This is a serious safety issue that prevented the airbag system from protecting you during the collision. Your airbag warning light came on, and a mechanic determined your airbag needed replacement to pass your vehicle's safety inspection. You paid $948.90 to have the airbag replaced. You believe you should be reimbursed because your vehicle should have been included in a recall for defective airbags that the manufacturer knew about years earlier.

Engine And Engine Cooling →3 issues
When you downshifted from 3rd to 2nd gear while turning, you heard a loud clanking noise and smelled fumes and smoke inside the car. You noticed an oil leak, and the dealer determined that the 3rd piston rod had broken and punctured a hole in the engine block. The engine will likely need to be rebuilt or replaced.

Your engine stopped running due to sludge buildup inside the engine. When you took it to a Toyota dealer for repair, they disassembled the engine and found that fixing the damage would cost over $6,000. The warranty didn't cover damage caused by engine sludge. The repair would involve cleaning out the sludge and rebuilding or replacing engine components.

Your engine has had persistent oil leakage and smoking issues that required two engine block replacements within a year of purchase, despite dealer reassurances and warranty coverage. The dealer attributed the problems to installation errors, but the issues recurred even after repairs. Your car is now smoking and needs major engine work, but the warranty has expired and the dealer won't repair it, leaving you with an undrivable vehicle and an outstanding loan.

Electrical System →3 issues
After you removed the key from the ignition and parked your car in the garage, the engine kept running instead of shutting off. You noticed smoke coming from under the hood, so you called the fire department. They arrived and put out the fire, determining that faulty wiring in the engine bay caused the fire. This will likely require a complete inspection and replacement of the damaged wiring harness and any burned components.

Your car won't start when it's cold and damp outside, even when parked on level ground. The problem started around 110,500 miles and hasn't been diagnosed or fixed yet. A mechanic would need to test your battery, starter, and ignition system to pinpoint the cause.

Your tail lights flicker on and off intermittently, and when they're off, your cruise control stops working too. When you turn on the headlights, the cruise control cuts out even if the tail lights are on. The dealer has replaced the bulb multiple times, but the real issue appears to be a loose electrical connection—when you remove and reinsert the bulb, the lights work again, suggesting an intermittent short rather than a failed bulb. The fix will likely involve inspecting and repairing the electrical connections in the tail light circuit and cruise control wiring.

Steering,vehicle Speed Control →1 issue
During rainy weather, your steering wheel turned on its own and the vehicle swerved left to right unexpectedly before straightening out. When you pressed the brakes during this incident, they didn't respond until the vehicle stopped on its own. The problem may be related to moisture affecting your steering or speed control system in wet conditions.

Seat Belts →1 issue
Your driver's side seat belt has pulled out and won't retract back into its holder. This means the belt stays extended and won't tuck away normally. The seat belt mechanism will likely need to be repaired or replaced to restore proper operation.

Suspension,electrical System,service Brakes →1 issue
Your car's suspension feels unstable and rattles from the front end. You're also experiencing electrical shorts that blow fuses, and a mechanic found that your dashboard wiring needs replacement. Additionally, your brake light stays on and your brake pedal requires significant pressure to bring the vehicle to a complete stop.

Exterior Lighting →1 issue
Your headlights flicker and turn off while driving, sometimes both going completely dark until you restart the car. New headlights haven't fixed the problem, and you're left driving with only one working light at a time, which makes night driving unsafe. The dealership ruled out an electrical issue, but the problem persists. This likely requires diagnostic testing of the lighting circuit, wiring, or control module to find the underlying cause.

Fuel System, Gasoline →1 issue
Your gas tank developed corrosion and rust, with holes forming in the filler pipe where you add fuel. This was discovered during a repair visit and fixed by the auto shop, but Toyota offered no assistance since your vehicle was out of warranty. The repair likely involved replacing the corroded filler pipe and possibly treating or replacing sections of the gas tank.

Tires →1 issue
You experienced three flat tires on your 1996 Corolla within four months (May-August 2005) due to faulty valve stems on Goodyear Ultra HP 4 tires purchased in January 2005. One incident left you stranded for six hours on a highway, resulting in impound and citation fees. After contacting Goodyear, they acknowledged a bad batch of valve stems from around Christmas 2004 and replaced yours with metal truck-type valve stems, which resolved the issue. The fix involved replacing the defective valve stems with higher-quality metal versions.

Engine And Engine Cooling, vehicle Speed Control, equipment →1 issue
After a timing belt replacement at a non-dealer mechanic around 100,000 miles, your cruise control stopped working entirely. You also noticed that when decelerating—whether braking or coasting—the engine would suddenly rev up and the gas pedal would move on its own from its resting position. The mechanic may have accidentally disconnected or damaged cruise control components or throttle cables during the timing belt work.
