The contact's sister-in-law owns a 2008 Toyota Camry. The contact stated while his sister-in-law was driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle stalled inadvertently. There were no warning lights illuminated. Upon inspecting the engine, the contact noticed there was no engine oil in the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the vehicle had consumed an excessive amount of engine oil, causing the engine to fail. The independent mechanic advised the contact to tow the vehicle to the local dealer. The vehicle was then towed to the dealer, where it was diagnosed that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact that they could not assist as there was no recall associated with the VIN and the vehicle warranty had expired. The failure mileage was approximately 113,000.

MY TOYOTA CAMRY IS USING EXCESSIVE AMOUNTS OF ENGINE OIL. BEGINNING AT ABOUT 90000 MILES MY 2008 TOYOTA CAMRY LE EQUIPPED WITH THE 2AZ FOUR CYLINDER ENGINE BEGAN TO USE OIL. SUBSEQUENTLY, I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO MY LOCAL TOYOTA DEALER AND WAS TOLD I WAS TWO MONTHS OUT OF MY TEN YEAR WARRANTY AND ANY REPAIRS WOULD BE AT MY EXPENSE. TODAY, THE VEHICLE HAS 117000 MILES AND IS BURNING A QUART OF OIL EVERY 700 MILES. THIS IS CLEARLY A MANUFACTURING DEFECT THAT TOYOTA SHOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR CORRECTING AT THEIR EXPENSE.

I HAVE HAD TO ADD OIL IN BETWEEN OIL CHANGES OVER THE PAST 5 YEARS, OFTEN TWICE BETWEEN CHANGES. AFTER BEING TOLD THERE WAS A RECALL OF THIS SPECIFIC ISSUE FROM A MECHANIC, I THEN FOUND OUT THAT IT WAS BEYOND THE LENGTH OF TIME TO GET IT REPAIRED UNDER THE RECALL. I WAS THEN INFORMED THAT I SHOULD HAVE RECEIVED A LETTER FROM TOYOTA IN THE MAIL STATING THERE WAS A RECALL. I NEVER RECEIVED A LETTER ABOUT THIS RECALL. I TOOK THE CAR INTO THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP IN TOWN ABOUT THE ISSUE AND THEY SAID THEY COULD PERFORM AN OIL TEST ON IT TO SEE HOW MUCH IT WAS BURNING AFTER 1,500 MILES. UPON BRINGING IT BACK I WAS INFORMED THAT MY CAR HADN'T BURNED ENOUGH TO THEIR REQUIRED AMOUNT (AMOUNT NOT DISCLOSED TO ME) TO DO ANYTHING, BUT TOLD ME THAT I COULD ALWAYS COME BACK AND HAVE ANOTHER OIL TEST DONE. I FIND IT VERY DISTURBING THAT THIS HAS BEEN AN ONGOING ISSUE AND THAT THERE IS A CLAIM OF A LETTER BEING SENT TO ME WHEN I NEVER RECEIVED ONE. IT ALSO APPEARS THAT THERE ARE NUMEROUS INDIVIDUALS WITH THIS SAME YEAR HAVE HAD THE SAME PROBLEMS AND NOTHING HAS BEEN DONE ABOUT IT. I TALKED TO TOYOTA REP, AND HE ADMITTED THAT 2 LETTERS WERE MAILED TO ME, NONE OF WHICH I RECEIVED, REGARDING REPAIR OPTIONS BY TOYOTA. THIS OFFER EXPIRED IN 2018. I ASKED FOR ADDRESS, THEY DIDN'T HAVE THAT INFO. SO I ASKED IF ALL COMMUNICATIONS FROM TOYOTA COULD BE MADE BY EMAIL, THEY SAID NO. I FEEL EXTREMELY TAKEN ADVANTAGE OF. I ALWAYS USED TOYOTA SERVICE TO AVOID PROBLEMS LIKE THIS. CUSTOMER SERVICE IS LACKING AND I FEEL I SHOULD STILL QUALIFY FOR A REPAIR BY TOYOTA.

THE OIL CONSUMPTION TEST WAS PERFORMED TWICE, BUT IT DID NOT PROVIDE A PERMANENT REMEDY. THE DEALER WAS ASKED SEVERAL TIMES TO PROVIDE FURTHER DIAGNOSTIC TESTING. AFTER ADDING OIL TO THE VEHICLE, THE DEALER RECOMMENDED THAT THE ENGINE BE REBUILT. THE ENGINE HEAD WAS SENT FOR TESTING AND CHECKED FOR A VALVE STEM SEAL THAT MAY NEED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS NOT AVAILABLE.

I HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO MY HOME.THEY LATER INDICATED VIA EMAIL THAT MY CASE WOULD BE FILED WITH TOYOTA MOTOR SALES U.S.A. INC. UNDER FILE#[XXX]. WHY DOES A 2008 CAMRY CE WITH 60,896 MILES BREAKDOWN WITHOUT WARNING. I DECIDED TO RESEARCH THE MATTER. I FOUND OUT THAT TOYOTA HAD A OIL CONSUMPTION DEFECT CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT IN 2014, ONE OF MANY, INDICATING 2006-2011 MODEL YEAR VEHICLES (INCLUDING CAMRY) HAD DEFECTIVE ENGINES THAT BURN EXCESSIVE AMOUNTS OF OIL WHICH CAN CAUSE ENGINE FAILURE IN A MOVING VEHICLE. FURTHER, TOYOTA WAS AWARE OF THE DESIGN DEFECT, BUT STILL MANUFACTURED AND SOLD THEIR VEHICLES WITHOUT WARNING CONSUMERS. I PURCHASED MY 2008 TOYOTA CAMRY SE IN FEBRUARY OF 2008. IN MARCH OF THIS YEAR AS I WAS DRIVING THE OIL LIGHT KEPT GOING ON AND I HAD JUST HAD AN OIL CHANGE NOT LONG BEFORE THIS HAPPENED. I STOPPED TO HAVE MY OIL CHECKED AND FOUND OUT THAT I HAD ALMOST NO OIL IN MY ENGINE. PUT THE OIL IN AND IT HAPPENED AGAIN. I BEGAN TO RESEARCH AND FOUND THAT TOYOTA KNOWINGLY SOLD THE VEHICLES WITH THE PISTON DEFECT. I CALLED TOYOTA AND THEY TOLD ME THEY WOULD NOT HONOR THE REPAIR DUE TO THE FACT THAT IT WAS OVER THE 10 YEAR ANNIVERSARY DATE. THE MILEAGE WAS UNDER 150,000 (112,000) AND I WAS 2 MONTHS PAST THE DATE AND THEY WILL NOT HONOR THE REPAIRS TO MY VEHICLE. I HAVE ATTACHED THE OIL CONSUMPTION TEST INVOICE DONE BY A TOYOTA DEALER AND THE LETTER SENT TO TOYOTA. I CAN NOT AFFORD TO SPEND $3000 TO $5000 TO FIX THIS PROBLEM. APPARENTLY THERE IS A KNOWN DEFECT WITH THESE CARS THAT THEY BURN OIL. THE LOW OIL WARNING LIGHT DIDN'T COME ON WHEN I WAS 3 1/2 QUARTS LOW ON OIL. THAT IS UNACCEPTABLE! MY 2008 CAMRY LE HAS 35,000 MILES ON IT. THE COOLANT LEVEL HAS ALWAYS BEEN MAINTAINED. I AM THE ORIGINAL OWNER. THE WATER PUMP BEARINGS FAILED SO THAT THE PUMP MADE GRINDING NOISES, THE DRIVE SHAFT WAS WOBBLING, AND THE PUMP WAS LEAKING COOLANT. THE NOISES BEGAN ABRUPTLY WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS BEING DRIVEN (6/16/18). I TOOK THE CAR TO A SHOP (6/20/18) AND REPLACED THE PUMP, MAKING SURE THE SHOP PUT IN LONGLIFE COOLANT AND REPLACED ALL THE OLD COOLANT. A CHECK OF COMPLAINTS AGAINST TOYOTA WATER PUMP COMPLAINTS REVEALS THAT PREMATURE FAILURES ARE A COMMON PROBLEM IN CAMRYS BETWEEN 2007 AND 2009. TOYOTA DOES NOT WANT TO ACCEPT RESPONSIBILITY FOR REPLACING THE PUMPS. I KEPT THE OLD WATER PUMP, SERPENTINE BELT, AND SHOP INVOICE. I WOULD LIKE MY COSTS REIMBURSED.

ULTIMATELY, IN 2016, I TOOK MY CAMRY TO A TOYOTA CENTER AND THEY SUGGESTED TO RUN AN ENGINE OIL CONSUMPTION TEST (WHICH TOYOTA HAD OFFERED IN A RECALL DUE TO A MANUFACTURING PROBLEM IN THE ENGINE -- EITHER IN PISTONS OR RINGS, OR BOTH). I ACCEPTED TO RUN THE TEST, AND AFTER THE TEST, THE TECHNICIAN CONFIRMED THAT THE TEST DID NOT SHOW SIGNIFICANT ENGINE OIL CONSUMPTION, AND THEY DID NOT FIX MY CAR. THIS ENGINE OIL CONSUMPTION PROBLEM IS A TOYOTA MANUFACTURING FAULT AND MUST BE FIXED AS SOON AS POSSIBLE BY TOYOTA AT ANY TIME WITHOUT ANY DEADLINE. TOYOTA ANNOUNCED 2008 CAMRYS HAVE THIS PROBLEM, AND THE PROBLEM IS THERE IN ALL 2008 CAMRY CARS NOT ONLY IN DIAGNOSED CARS. TECHNICIANS MAY MAKE MISTAKES IN RUNNING THE TEST; HOWEVER, THE MANUFACTURED PIECES (PISTON AND/OR RING IN MY CASE) ARE ALL FAULTY IN ALL 2008 CAMRYS. I JUST GOT MY OIL CHANGED ON AUGUST 4TH 2017. WELL TWO WEEKS (8/18/2017) AFTER MY CHANGE I NOTICED THE OIL SENSOR WOULD FLASH EVERY TIME I CAME TO A STOP. I CHECK THE OIL IN MY CAR AND THERE WAS BARELY ANY ON THE DIPSTICK. AS A RESULT, I ADDED MORE OIL MYSELF TO AVOID BURNING UP THE ENGINE. I CALLED THE SERVICE ADVISOR AT MOSS BROS WHO HELPED ME TWO WEEKS PRIOR. I EXPLAINED THE SITUATION AND TOLD HIM I HAD AN OIL CONSUMPTION TEST 2 YEARS AGO AND WAS ADVISED EVERYTHING WAS NORMAL. TOYOTA KNEW THE PISTON RINGS WERE FAULTY FROM THE BEGINNING. THEY DIDN'T WANT TO SPEND THE MONEY OR HOURS/YEARS TRYING TO REPAIR/REPLACE ENGINES IN THESE CARS. SO THEY MAKE THE CONSUMER DO THIS STUPID WORTHLESS CONSUMPTION TEST TO AVOID RECALL REPAIRS. THEY ARE OBVIOUSLY TRYING TO AVOID TAKING CARE OF A PROBLEM THAT MANY OF US ARE FACING. WE ARE VERY FAITHFUL ABOUT GETTING OUT CAR'S OIL CHANGED REGULARLY. GOOD THING! WHEN WE RECEIVED A WARRANTY ENHANCEMENT NOTIFICATION THAT OUR CAR WAS COVERED FOR EXCESSIVE ENGINE OIL CONSUMPTION, WE STARTED WATCHING OUR OIL CONSUMPTION CLOSELY. WE WERE DEFINITELY GOING THROUGH A QUART OF OIL EVERY 1,000 MILES. WE TOOK THE CAR IN TO A LOCAL DEALERSHIP FOR THE OIL CONSUMPTION TEST IN MARCH 2016 AND WERE TOLD OUR CAR DIDN'T CONSUME ENOUGH OIL TO QUALIFY FOR THE REPAIR. WE KEPT AN EYE ON THE OIL CONSUMPTION AND TOOK IT BACK FOR ANOTHER TEST IN OCTOBER 2016--CONVINCED IT WOULD QUALIFY. THE DEALERSHIP CLAIMED THAT THE CAR AGAIN DID NOT QUALIFY. WE WERE FRUSTRATED BUT HAD LITTLE RECOURSE ON 10/24/16 WITH THE WARRANTY EXPIRING ON 10/31/16. OUR CAR IS NOW GOING THROUGH A QUART OF OIL EVERY 400-500 MILES. NO KIDDING. WE RESET THE TRIP ODOMETER EACH TIME WE ADD OIL AND ARE FAITHFUL ABOUT CHECKING IT ONCE IT GETS IN THAT 400-500 MILE RANGE. AT OUR MECHANIC'S SUGGESTION (HE ONLY WORKS ON TOYOTA'S BUT ISN'T AT A DEALERSHIP), WE CALLED TOYOTA HEADQUARTERS EARLIER THIS YEAR. (OUR MECHANIC HAS HIS OWN REASONS FOR NOT BEING IMPRESSED WITH THE DEALERSHIP WE HAD TAKEN OUR CAR TO FOR THE OIL CONSUMPTION TESTING.) MY HUSBAND WAS PUT ON HOLD FOR OVER AN HOUR AND THEN WAS DISCONNECTED. WE HAVEN'T TRIED PHONING TOYOTA AGAIN. THE LAST OIL CHANGE I HAD WITH MY CAMRY 2008 WAS IN FEBRUARY 2017. AT THIS POINT MY MILEAGE WAS 194,600 AND MY CARS WAS 7 MONTHS SHORT OF TURNING 10 YEARS OLD. THE EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION PROBLEM HAD OCCURRED WELL AFTER THE EXTENDED WARRANTY OF 150,000! IN THE TSB, IT IS NOTED 'SOME 2006 ' 2011 MODEL YEAR VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH THE 2AZ-FE ENGINE MAY EXHIBIT ENGINE OIL CONSUMPTION. THE PISTON ASSEMBLY HAS BEEN CHANGED TO MINIMIZE OIL CONSUMPTION.' WE HAD OUR 2008 TOYOTA CAMRY HYBRID TESTED FEBRUARY 2015, WHICH WAS WITHIN THE EXTENDED WARRANTY PERIOD OF 10 YEARS OR 150,000 MILES. ACCORDING TO THE DEALER (TRI COUNTY TOYOTA, LIMERICK PA), OUR CAR DID NOT MEET THE CRITERIA FOR AN ENGINE REBUILD WHICH IS 'CONSUMPTION OF MORE THAN A QUART OF OIL OVER 1200 MILES.' ACCORDING TO THIS CRITERION, AN ENGINE WHICH WAS BURNING 3 QUARTS OF OIL BETWEEN OIL CHANGES (5,000 MILES) COULD MATHEMATICALLY FAIL THIS TEST BUT IS CLEARLY DEFECTIVE. THAT IS THE SITUATION WE NOW FIND OURSELVES IN. OUR CAR HAS BEEN SERVICED ACCORDING TO THE MANUFACTURER'S RECOMMENDATIONS FOR ITS ENTIRE LIFE BUT HAS NOW USED 3 QUARTS OF OIL BETWEEN OIL CHANGES (5,000 MILES). IT IS NOT LEAKING THROUGH SEALS TO THE EXTERIOR, AND IS THEREFORE BURNING EXCESSIVE OIL, INDICATIVE OF THE FUNDAMENTAL PROBLEM WHICH IS THE SUBJECT OF THE ABOVE-MENTIONED TSM. THE PROGRAM HAD JUST CLOSED AND I DID NOT QUALIFY FOR ANY FOLLOW UP WARRANTY BECAUSE OF MILES ON THE CAR. I CALLED TOYOTA AND THEY REFUSED TO ACKNOWLEDGE A PROBLEM WITH THE CAR AND TOLD ME THAT THEY WOULD NOT CONSIDER MY CAR FOR ANY REPAIR. THE CAR MADE A 'DING' SOUND WHEN THE BREAKS WERE APPLIED WHILE IT WAS BEING DRIVEN. UPON CHECKING, I NOTICED THAT THE ENGINE OIL WAS EXTREMELY LOW - THE DIP STICK SHOWED NO OIL ON IT. I WAS ALARMED AND IMMEDIATELY ADDED 3 QUARTS OF OIL - FOR OIL TO SHOW UP ON THE DIP STICK. AT FIRST, I FIGURED THAT, MAYBE AT THE PREVIOUS OIL CHANGE, SUFFICIENT OIL WAS NOT ADDED. SOON THEREAFTER, I GOT AN OIL CHANGE. ABOUT 3 MONTHS LATER I BEGAN TO HEAR THE 'DING' SOUND AGAIN. I CHECKED THE OIL AND FOUND THAT IT WAS LOW AND AGAIN IT DID NOT EVEN REGISTER ON THE DIP STICK. I ADDED 3 QUARTS OF OIL AND PROCEEDED TO GET AN OIL CHANGE; THIS TIME WITH TANSKY TOYOTA DEALERSHIP. THREE MONTHS LATER, THE PROBLEM RECURRED. THIS TIME I WAS CONCERNED AND CHECKED ALL THE MAIL I HAD RECEIVED FROM TOYOTA AND NOTICED A WARRANTY ENHANCEMENT LETTER THAT STATED - 2008 CAMRY'S HAD AN 'OIL CONSUMPTION PROBLEM'. I IMMEDIATELY WENT TO TANSKY TOYOTA DEALERSHIP AND REPORTED THE PROBLEM AND THEY BEGAN AN 'OIL CONSUMPTION TEST'. AFTER THE TEST, THEY TOLD ME THAT THERE WAS NO PROBLEM AND THAT IT WAS A NORMAL OCCURRENCE. CLEARLY, I WAS NOT CONVINCED WITH THE REPORT AND CHALLENGED THE ADVISER. HE REMAINED ADAMANT THAT THERE WAS NO PROBLEM AND THAT THE TEST RESULT WAS NORMAL; HE TOLD ME TO CHECK AND ADD OIL AS NEEDED REGULARLY. I CONTACTED THE GENERAL MANAGER OF TANSKY. SHE HAD THE SERVICE MANAGER, CALL BACK A WEEK LATER. HE NEVER ACKNOWLEDGED THAT THE CAR HAD AN 'OIL CONSUMPTION PROBLEM'; RATHER THAT THIS IS A NORMAL OCCURRENCE AND ADVISED THAT THE OIL BE REPLENISHED ON A REGULAR BASIS. I RESPONDED THAT, THIS WAS SOMETHING THAT I HAVE NEVER EXPERIENCED ON MY OTHER TOYOTA CARS; BUT MY WORDS FELL ON DEAF EARS. I AM CONCERNED THAT THIS ISSUE WILL DAMAGE THE ENGINE; IN ADDITION THE PROBLEM IS A SAFETY ISSUE, SHOULD THE OIL BE DEPLETED WHILE ON LONG DISTANCE TRIPS.

WHEN I TOOK MY 2008 CAMRY IN TO THE DEALER FOR AN OIL CHANGE THEY FOUND NO OIL IN THE CAR. THEY SAID I NEEDED TO TAKE AN "OIL CONSUMPTION TEST". THEY DID SOMETHING TO MY CAR AND I DROVE FOR ANOTHER 2000 MILES AND BROUGHT IT BACK IN. I WAS TOLD IT HAD FAILED THE OIL CONSUMPTION TEST AND THAT I WOULD BE PUT ON A WAITING LIST FOR REPAIR WHICH IS COVERED BY AN EXTENDED WARRANTY FROM TOYOTA. I WAS TOLD THE WAIT COULD BE AS LONG AS SIX MONTHS AND THAT IN THE MEANTIME IF MY CAR RUNS OUT OF OIL AND ANYTHING HAPPENS TO THE ENGINE, THE WARRANTY WOULD BE VOID. MY CAR MIGHT HAVE OIL IN THE MORNING AND THE BE COMPLETELY OUT OF OIL BY THE AFTERNOON. I FEEL I SHOULD BE GIVEN A LOAN CAR TO DRIVE WHILE I AM WAITING FOR THESE REPAIRS. I CONTACTED TOYOTA DIRECTLY IN CALIFORNIA AND THEY WOULD NOT APPROVE THIS REQUEST. THE PARTS NEEDED FOR THE REPAIR ARE HAVING TO BE MANUFACTURED AND THIS TAKES MONTHS. I LEARNED FROM TOYOTA CORP. ABOUT THEIR "EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION" EXTENDED WARRANTY PROGRAM, BUT THEY ARE REFUSING TO STAND BEHIND THIS DEFECT IN MY CAR AND REFUSE TO PERFORM REPAIRS AT THEIR COST. MY ENGINE BURNED UP BECAUSE THE OIL WAS DEPLETED WITHIN A TWO MONTH PERIOD - THIS HAPPENED ON 12/28/15, AND I HAD TOPPED OFF THE OIL IN OCTOBER WITH 2.5 QTS, AND THE REMAINING OIL WAS CLEAN. TOYOTA REFUSES TO ACKNOWLEDGE THAT A HIGHLY ABNORMAL EVENT HAS OCCURRED WITH MY CAR, GAVE ME NO WARNING TO ACT IN A SAFE MANNER, AND LED TO ENGINE FAILURE WITH REPAIRS ESTIMATED $5,300 - $7,600.

TOYOTA HAS KNOWN ABOUT THE EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION OIL ISSUE FOR YEARS AND HAS CORRECTED ITS DESIGN. BUT, THOSE WHO WERE UNAWARE OF THIS PROBLEM AND NEVER INFORMED OF IT BY TOYOTA ARE LEFT IN THE DARK. MY ISSUE IS THAT THE OIL CONSUMPTION NOW AFFECTS THE EMISSIONS SYSTEM. I HAVE HEARD OF OTHERS RUNNING OUT OF OIL AND SEIZING THEIR ENGINES DURING OPERATION OF THEIR VEHICLES. THIS IS UNSAFE. MAY/2014 WAS MY LAST OIL CHANGE BEFORE MY NEXT SCHEDULED OIL CHANGE AUGUST/2014. MY OIL PRESSURE INDICATOR DID SIGNAL THAT THERE WAS LOW OIL PRESSURE.I HAD DRIVEN MY CAR EARLIER THAT MORNING THERE WAS NO INDICATION THAT SOMETHING BAD WAS GOING ON. LATER THAT AFTERNOON, I WAS GOING TO WORK AND TRIED TO LEAVE AND THE CAR MADE A SLUGGISH NOISE LIKE IT DIDN'T WANT TO CRANK UP. I THOUGHT IT WAS BAD GAS AT FIRST, THEN I HEARD A RATTLING SOUND FROM THE HOOD.UPON LOOKING AT THE OIL GAUGE, MY CAR WAS SEVERELY DEPLETED OF OIL. EVEN AFTER PUTTING OIL IN THE CAR, ENGINE DAMAGE HAD ALREADY BEEN DONE, LEAVING ME WITHOUT A VEHICLE. MY MECHANIC ADVISED ME THAT THE ENGINE WAS BADLY DAMAGED. AND THAT I COULD EITHER PURCHASE ANOTHER USED ENGINE OR A NEW ENGINE. BOTH HAVE BEEN QUOTED TO BE IN EXCESS OF $4500 AND UP. I HAVE RESEARCHED THE INTERNET AND HAVE FOUND THAT THE 2008 CAMRY IS KNOWN TO HAVE THIS SORT OF OIL CONSUMPTION PROBLEM. I JUST PURCHASED THIS CAR A YEAR AGO JUNE 2013. AND I STILL OWE A BALANCE. THIS IS MY SIXTH TOYOTA VEHICLE PURCHASE AND HAVE NOT HAD A PROBLEM WITH NEITHER CARS UNTIL NOW. TOYOTA HAS A REPUTATION FOR GOOD QUALITY CARS THAT LAST A WHILE. ENGINE HAS BEEN MAINTAINED WITHIN PRESCRIBED INTERVALS FOR OIL CHANGES USING APPROVED OPTIONAL 0W20 OIL. NOW IT APPEARS TO BE CONSUMING OVER 1 QUART PER 1500 MILES. HAVEN'T TAKEN THIS PROBLEM TO A DEALER YET, BUT FROM WHAT I'M READING IN OTHER COMPLAINTS, TOYOTA HAS STEADFASTLY REFUSED TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THIS ISSUE. UNLIKE OTHERS, I HAVE TOYOTA'S FULL BUMPER-TO-BUMPER WARRANTY, GOOD FOR 7 YEARS OR 10800 MILES. I'M NOT SURE EVEN THAT WOULD MOVE TOYOTA, SINCE THEY COULD SIMPLY STALL UNTIL THE VEHICLE PURCHASED 6 YEARS AGO IS OUT OF WARRANTY. NOVEMBER OF 2013, IT WAS BROUGHT TO MY ATTENTION BY A CERTIFIED MECHANIC DURING A ROUTINE OIL CHANGE THAT MY VEHICLE WAS BURNING OIL. THIS WOULD LEAD TO A SERIOUS DAMAGE TO THE ENGINE WHICH COULD LEAD TO FATAL COMPLICATIONS SUCH AS A FIRE. I AM OFFICIALLY FILING A COMPLAINT AGAINST TOYOTA REGARDING THIS ISSUE. CONCERNED, I PERFORMED AN OFFICIAL OIL CHANGE AT A LOCAL TOYOTA BRANCH. APPROXIMATELY 800 MILES SINCE THAT OIL CHANGE, NEARLY ALL OF THE OIL HAD BURNED OFF. I SPOKE WITH A TOYOTA CUSTOMER SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE, AND I WAS TOLD THAT THERE IS NO 'CUSTOMER CARE CENTER' THAT DEALS WITH THIS ISSUE. IT IS VITAL TO RAISE ATTENTION TO THIS ISSUE AS IT IS A SEVERELY DANGEROUS PROBLEM NOT ONLY FOR THE DRIVER BUT FOR THE PUBLIC. WHEN I FIRST USED AIR CONDITIONING ON VEHICLE, NOTICED ROUGH IDLING. IT WAS SO BAD THE CAR WOULD SOMETIMES SHUDDER AND SHAKE. THE CAR IS NOW 5 1/2 YEARS OLD WITH 39,000 MILES ON IT AND STILL DOES THE SAME THING. I HAD IT IN TO DEALER WITHIN THE LAST YEAR WITH ANOTHER RECALL AND I TALKED TO SERVICE ADVISOR ABOUT IT. HE SAID HE ALSO HAD A 2008 CAMRY AND IT DID THE SAME THING. IT WAS THE WAY THE ENGINE WAS SET UP WHEN MANUFACTURED AND COULD NOT BE CHANGED. I HAVE OWNED TWO OTHER CAMRYS AND STILL HAVE A 99 MODEL WITH 125,000 MILES ON IT AND NEITHER HAD THAT KIND OF PROBLEM. I FIND IT DIFFICULT TO BELIEVE THAT THE CAR OR ANY CAR WOULD HAVE BEEN DESIGNED TO IDLE THE WAY THIS CAR DOES. THIS SEEMS TO ME TO BE A SAFETY ISSUE SINCE IF YOU ARE IN HEAVY TRAFFIC AND YOU ARE STOPPING AND STARTING AND THE WEATHER IS HOT AND YOU HAVE YOUR AIR CONDITIONING RUNNING AND THE CAR IS SHUDDERING AND SHAKING AND YOU ARE TRYING TO GET OUT OF THE WAY OF TRAFFIC AND YOU ARE AFRAID THE CAR IS NOT GOING TO ACCELERATE THE WAY IT SHOULD. *TR

LATE JULY, AFTER OIL CHANGE AT 76,220 MI, UNTIL THE NEXT OIL CHANGE APPROX 1.5 QTS OF OIL WERE ADDED. AT THAT NEXT OIL CHANGE LATE NOV 2012 (81,788MI) IT WAS STILL ALMOST A QUART LOW. OIL CONSUMPTION DOES NOT SEEM TO OCCUR AT ALL UNTIL AFTER FIRST 2500 MI ARE DRIVEN ON NEW OIL. ALSO SEEMS TO HAVE SLOWED SOME DURING THE WINTER MONTHS: ONLY ADDED 1 QT FROM LATE NOV UNTIL RECENTLY CHANGED ON 3/23/13 AT 87,500 MI. AT THIS TIME IT WAS AGAIN ALMOST A QUART LOW AT OIL CHANGE. ON AUGUST 27, 2010 WHILE APPROACHING THE INTERSECTION 35 MPH THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ILLUMINATED AND SHE HEARD A NOISE UNDERNEATH THE HOOD THE VEHICLE STALLED AFTER A FEW SECONDS THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY ACCELERATED WITH HER FOOT ON THE BRAKE PEDAL. THE VEHICLE WILL BE TAKEN TO THE DEALER TO BE DIAGNOSED. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE FAILURE AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 60,000.

TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 TOYOTA CAMRY. THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 35 MPH, ATTEMPTED TO MAKE A TURN AND A LOUD NOISE WAS COMING FROM THE ENGINE. THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL BEGAN TO STICK WITH A SLUGGISH RESPONSE, FOLLOWED BY THE ENGINE STALLING. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER. THE TECHNICIAN STATED THAT THE NOISE WAS COMING FROM A PEBBLE IN THE HUB CAPS. THE FAILURE HAD NOT OCCURRED AFTER THE SERVICE REPAIR. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 53,000.

I WAS DRIVING MY 2008 TOYOTA CAMRY HYBRID ON A MULTI LANE HIGHWAY AT ABOUT 60 MPH, WHEN THE CAR JERKED, ALL INDICATOR LIGHTS CAME ON AND THE ENGINE BECAME COMPLETELY UNRESPONSIVE. I PUSHED THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL TO TRY TO MANEUVER TO THE SHOULDER AND THERE WAS NO RESPONSE (NO ENGINE REV., NO ACCELERATION). I MANAGED TO GET THE CAR TO THE SHOULDER AND UPON RESTART, THE CAR DROVE HESITANTLY. I MADE IT TO A TOYOTA DEALERSHIP THAT NIGHT WITH ALL INDICATOR LIGHTS STILL LIT UP. THE NEXT DAY AS THEY BEGAN TO LOOK AT THE CAR, THEY COULD FIND NO STORED COMPUTER CODE FOR THE PROBLEM AND UPON DRIVING THE CAR, IT DROVE NORMALLY. AS A RESULT, THEY COULD NOT FIGURE OUT THE PROBLEM AND HAVE FIXED NOTHING. A TOYOTA SERVICE TECH ALSO LOOKED AT THE CAR WITH THE SAME RESULT. I NOW AM BEING FORCED TO PICK UP MY CAR UNREPAIRED. AS I LISTENED TO THE NEWS LAST EVENING (MARCH 18, 2010), THEY REPORTED ON A PROBLEM WITH THE EVM MODULE IN TOYOTA COROLLA'S. THIS PROBLEM SOUNDS VERY SIMILAR. *TR

RANDOM, INFREQUENT ENGINE FAILURE AT FREEWAY/HIGHWAY SPEEDS. AT CONSTANT HIGHWAY SPEEDS (STEADY STATE SPEED), CAR ENGINE DIES OUT AND CAR DECELERATES (WITHOUT ALERT AND FOR NO REASON). THIS CAR HAS ALWAYS DONE THIS ON AN INFREQUENT BASIS SINCE PURCHASED BRAND NEW. THIS HAPPENS ABOUT TWICE PER MONTH. I PHONED THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY SAID THEY HAVE TO SEE IT/EXPERIENCE THE PROBLEM. AT AROUND 41K MILES I BROUGHT THE CAR TO TOYOTA FOR THEIR INSPECTION (THIS WAS PRIOR TO ANY RECALLS ON CAMRYS), THEY CLEANED CARBON FROM THE ENGINE. THIS DID NOT STOP THE PROBLEM. ABOUT TWICE PER MONTH THE CAR DIES OUT WHEN TRAVELING AT A CONSTANT HIGHWAY SPEEDS (FOR NO REASON). ON 3/5/10 I BROUGHT THE CAR BACK TO THE DEALER SHIP (IT HAS ABOUT 81K MILES ON IT). THE CAR HAS A VALID EXTENDED WARRANTY ON IT THAT WAS PURCHASED AT TIME OF PURCHASING THE CAR. DUE TO RANDOM ENGINE FAILURE AT CONSTANT HIGHWAY SPEEDS THIS CAR IS EXTREMELY UNSAFE. *TR

I WAS DRIVING ALONG A RURAL ROAD AND MY ENGINE SEIZED UP AND THE CAR DIED. IT TURNS OUT THAT THE OIL FILTER FELL OFF AT SOME POINT- 2 MONTHS AFTER AN OIL CHANGE. THE OIL LIGHT DID NOT COME ON UNTIL APPROXIMATELY 30 SECONDS BEFORE THE CAR DIED. WHEN THE MECHANIC SPOKE WITH TOYOTA, HE ASKED IF THIS HAD OCCURRED OTHER TIMES AND WAS TOLD THEY HAD HEARD OF IT HAPPENING ONCE OR TWICE. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 TOYOTA CAMRY. AFTER DRIVING THE VEHICLE HOME, THE CONTACT COULD NOT CHECK THE OIL AFTER RESTARTING THE VEHICLE. THE OIL WOULD NORMALLY APPEAR ON THE DIPSTICK REGARDLESS IF THE VEHICLE HAD BEEN PARKED FOR HOURS. HE HAD TO ALLOW THE DIPSTICK TO SIT OUT OVERNIGHT IN ORDER TO CHECK THE OIL. THE DEALER STATED THAT NO ONE EVER CHECKS THEIR OWN OIL AND NOTHING COULD BE DONE. THE MANUFACTURER OFFERED NO RECOURSE AND ONLY TOOK HIS INFORMATION AND PASSED IT ON. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 4,500 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 200. UPDATED 11/07/08. *LJ THE OIL WOULD NOT DRAIN BACK INTO THE RESERVOIR UNLESS THE VEHICLE SITS OVERNIGHT. DEALER FIXED THE DEFECT FOR FREE, BUT MY INTERACTION WITH THE NATIONAL TOYOTA CUSTOMER SERVICE AGENCY IN CALIFORNIA WAS UNACCEPTABLE.
