The padded dash panel has failed so that it cannot provide impact protection because of hard material that has chipped and cracked. The dealer inspected the problem and gave me a repair estimate of $2800.00. I complained to Toyota and was told that the extended dash warranty ended in 2018. Prior to failure, the dash was sticky but not chipped and cracked. Why is Toyota allowed to stop any warranty or compensation for dash impact protection on my 13 year old vehicle?

The contact owns a 2008 Toyota Camry. The contact stated while driving 60 mph, the glare from the sticky dashboard made it unable to visibly see the road and he lost control of the vehicle. The contact stated no warning light was illuminated. The contact stated a state trooper informed him that he was unable to drive the vehicle as-is and had the vehicle towed to his residence. The contact towed the vehicle to the local dealer, where the vehicle was being diagnosed for over a month. The vehicle was not repaired but was pending repairs. The manufacturer had been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 161,000.

THERE WAS HOWEVER A RECALL ON THIS PART, & AFTER MANY ATTEMPTS TO CONTACT A LOCAL TOYOTA DEALERSHIP TO ORDER THE PART & SCHEDULE TO GET THIS FIXED BY THE TIME ALLOTMENT THEY HAD PLACED. SO, MY ACTUAL COMPLAINT IS THAT THEY PLACED A TIME ALLOTMENT. BECAUSE, AFTER THAT TIME ALLOTMENT EXPIRED. ALL OF A SUDDEN THE DRIVERS SIDE SUN VISOR BROKE. YOU DON'T THINK ABOUT HOW USEFUL A SUN VISOR TRULY IS, UNTIL YOU ARE NO LONGER ABLE TO USE IT. IT'S INSTALLED FOR A REASON, NOT TO BE SOMETHING FANCY IN A CAR. MY 2008 TOYOTA CAMRY DASHBOARD IS MELTED AND STICKY. ITS SO BAD ITS PUTTING GLARE ON MY WINDSHIELD AND I CAN BARELY SEE WHEN DRIVING. THIS ISSUE IS MAKING DRIVING VERY DANGEROUS. I DON'T FEEL SAFE DRIVING IT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE DAY WHEN THE SUN IS OUT BECAUSE I KNOW MY VISIBILITY WILL BE LIMITED DUE TO THE GLARE MAKING IT UNSAFE FOR ME AND PUTTING OTHER DRIVERS AT RISK. IN MARCH OF THIS YEAR I NOTICED AN AREA ON THE DASHBOARD. THINKING SOMEONE HAD SPILLED SOMETHING, I ATTEMPTED TO WIPE IT AND THE CLOTH LITERALLY STUCK TO THE DASHBOARD. IT WAS GOOEY. OVER THE NEXT FEW MONTHS IT GOT WORSE AND MORE WIDESPREAD TO NOW BE ALL THE DASHBOARD AREA. I AM FINDING OUT THAT THIS ISSUE IS BECOMING MORE AND MORE COMMON. TOYOTA SHOULD RECALL THE DASHBOARD AND REPLACE THIS DEFECTIVE EQUIPMENT IN THE VEHICLE. IT IS A SAFETY ISSUE IN THE SHINY STICKY MATERIAL REFLECTS SUNLIGHT BACK INTO THE EYES OF THE DRIVER. ADDITIONALLY, KEEPING THE CAR CLEAN IS EXTREMELY DIFFICULT BECAUSE EVERYTHING STICKS TO IT AND IS IMPOSSIBLE TO REMOVE WITHOUT FURTHER DAMAGE TO THE VEHICLE. THE PROBLEM HAS GOTTEN SO BAD THAT THERE ARE SPOTS WHERE THE DARK MATERIAL OF THE DASHBOARD SURFACE HAS COME OFF AND THE SURFACE BENEATH IS NOW SHOWING. I CALLED THE DEALER AND WAS ADVISED THAT TOYOTA KNEW ABOUT THE ISSUE IN 2011 BUT I WAS NEVER CONTACTED AS THE OWNER OF THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED BRAND NEW AND I HAVE BEEN THE ONLY OWNER/DRIVER OF THE VEHICLE. ADDITIONALLY, THE VEHICLE IS NOW OUT OF WARRANTY, SO TOYOTA WILL NEVER BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THEIR DEFECTIVE MANUFACTURING AND CUTTING CORNERS. SAID," OH DON'T WORRY ABOUT IT, I'M SURE THERE WILL BE A RECALL BECAUSE WE ARE SEEING IT ON LOTS OF CARS. MY DAUGHTER IN LAW HAD THE SAME PROBLEM ON HER 2007 MODEL. BOTH OF OURS WERE GRAY IN COLOR. SEVERAL YEARS LATER AND NO RECALL AND A DISGUSTING DASH BOARD. IT IS SO MELTED THAT IN FLORIDA WITH OUR HIGH BUG COUNT, I HAVE TO PULL BUGS AND WINGS OUT WITH A TWEEZER WHEN WINTER ROLLS AROUND. THE DASHBOARD GETS A LITTLE LESS SOFT IN THE COLD WEATHER, BUT IS STILL STICKY AND CANNOT BE CLEANED. IT IS VERY DIFFICULT TO SEE CLEARLY THROUGH THE WINDSHIELD. I CONTACTED TOYOTA CARE CENTER AND EXPLAINED THE ISSUE WITH THE DASH DETERIORATION TO THEM. THEIR REP ACKNOWLEDGED THEY RECOGNIZED OTHER OWNERS HAD REPORTED AN ISSUE WITH THE DASH BUT UNLESS THE CAR WAS UNDER ORIGINAL WARRANTY, THEY CAN NOT DO ANYTHING TO RECTIFY THE SITUATION. THE REP ALSO NOTED TOYOTA DETERMINED THE CAUSE TO BE "ENVIRONMENTAL" AND PRIMARILY OCCURRING IN FLORIDA, WHERE I LIVE. IN RESEARCHING OTHER OWNERS COMPLAINTS ON-LINE, THIS ISSUE IS CLEARLY SYSTEMIC. AND, THERE ARE OTHER COMPLAINTS OF THIS CONDITION EFFECTING VISIBILITY. I AM AN OWNER OF A 2008 TOYOTA CAMRY SE. THE DASHBOARD ON MY VEHICLE STARTED MELTING, BECAME STICKY/SHINY AND HAS AN AWFUL GLARE ON THE WINDSHIELD. THIS STARTED AFTER THE WARRANTY HAD EXPIRED ON THE VEHICLE AND MY EXTENDED WARRANTY PURCHASED DOES NOT COVER TRIM FOR THE VEHICLE. I BROUGHT THE VEHICLE INTO TOYOTA FOR ROUTINE SERVICE FOR SCHEDULED MAINTENANCE AND INQUIRED ABOUT THE DASHBOARD. I WAS TOLD BY THE SERVICE MANAGER THAT THIS IS A RECURRING PROBLEM FOR THESE VEHICLES AND THEY HAVE ALREADY CHANGED MULTIPLE DASHBOARDS. I WAS TOLD THIS WAS AN EXPENSIVE PROBLEM TO RESOLVE (1100 FOR PART AND 660 FOR LABOR), AND TO CALL TOYOTA CUSTOMER SERVICE TO FILE A COMPLAINT TO SEE IF THEY WOULD HELP RESOLVE THIS ISSUE. AFTER A REVIEW BY TOYOTA THEY SAID THEY WOULD PAY FOR THE PART BUT I WOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE LABOR. I WAS TOLD THAT DUE TO THIS NOT BEING A RECALL THEY ARE NOT REQUIRED TO OFFER ANYTHING BY LAW. I AM CONCERNED BECAUSE IT IS CREATING A SHINY "REFLECTING" EFFECT ON THE WINDSHIELD THAT IMPAIRS VISIBILITY WHILE DRIVING. THEN I REMOVED ALL THE MANUFACTURED FLOOR MATS. I FOUND OUT INSIDE THE CAR HAD ABOUT HALF AN INCH OF WATER EVERYWHERE EXCEPT THE TRUNK. SOME SPOTS GET ALMOST AN INCH OF WATER LIKE UNDERNEATH THE DRIVER'S AND PASSENGER'S SEATS. I AM A COMPUTER PROGRAMMER AND I REALIZED THAT THERE ARE MORE AND MORE ELECTRONIC COMPONENTS IN MODERN CARS. ALTHOUGH MY SOAKING CAR DID NOT CAUSE ME OR ANYBODY ANY HARM, I FELT VERY WORRIED THAT THE WATER MIGHT DAMAGE SOME ELECTRONIC/WIRES COMPONENTS AND LEAD TO SOME DANGEROUS ACCIDENTS. WITH THAT WORRIES IN MY MIND, I BROUGHT MY CAR TO A TOYOTA DEALER FOR REPAIR. THEY TOLD ME THAT THEY NEEDED TO "ADD DRAIN HOSE CLAMPS TO SUNROOF DRAIN HOSES" TO FIX THE WATER COMING DOWN THROUGH PILLARS. WITHOUT ANY HESITATION, I AGREED TO PAY FOR THE SERVICE TO FIX THE PROBLEM. I DID SOME SEARCHES ON THE INTERNET AND FOUND OUT THAT QUITE A NUMBER OF PEOPLE WHO ALSO HAVE THIS PROBLEM. I THINK THAT THE MANUFACTURE CAN PREVENT THIS FROM HAPPENING BY SECURE THE SUNROOF DRAIN HOSES PROPERLY AND FIRMLY WHEN THEY MAKE THE CAR.
