Component: AIR BAGS:SIDE/WINDOW

ON CERTAIN VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH CURTAIN SHIELD AIR BAGS (CSA), ONE OR BOTH OF THE CURTAIN AIR BAGS MAY BE TWISTED NEAR THE INFLATOR DUE TO IMPROPER ASSEMBLY.

Risk: IF THIS OCCURS, THE CSA MAY NOT DEPLOY RAPIDLY ENOUGH WHEN ACTIVATED IN A SIDE IMPACT COLLISION. THIS MAY RESULT IN FAILURE TO PROVIDE THE INTENDED HEAD PROTECTION, INCREASING THE RISK OF INJURY.

Fix: DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE CSAS AND REPLACE THE AIR BAG ASSEMBLY IF NECESSARY. THE RECALL BEGAN ON AUGUST 6, 2004. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT TOYOTA AT 1-800-331-4331.

Your engine is leaking oil onto your driveway due to engine bolts that have sheared off. A mechanic replaced and properly torqued the bolts to specification, but the problem happened again. The issue occurred around 215,000 miles, and Toyota was unable to provide assistance. The fix will likely involve replacing the engine bolts and investigating why they keep failing, possibly requiring a new engine gasket or seal.

Your engine is leaking coolant from around the engine block due to loose head bolts. Your mechanic says you'd need to either replace or rebuild the entire engine to fix it properly, which is very expensive for a car with 114,000 miles. This is reportedly a common issue with 2003 Camrys that Toyota hasn't recalled. Fixing this will require either a complete engine replacement or a full engine rebuild.

While driving at 55 mph on the highway, your car suddenly lost power and stalled without warning. The engine had to be restarted and the car was shifted into neutral to get it running again. This happened twice total. The issue occurred around 100,000 miles and hasn't been diagnosed or repaired yet. You should have a mechanic diagnose why the engine is stalling, which may involve checking the fuel system, ignition system, or engine sensors.

Your engine temperature gauge climbed into the hot zone, indicating your engine was overheating. A Toyota dealer diagnosed a blown head gasket caused by failed engine bolts, which allowed coolant to leak from the cylinder head. Fixing this will require replacing the head gasket and engine bolts, and possibly inspecting the cylinder head for damage.

Your car suddenly accelerated uncontrollably when you shifted from reverse to drive in a parking lot, causing you to crash into a building despite attempting to brake. The acceleration happened without any input from you, and your brakes were ineffective at stopping the vehicle. This issue may require a thorough diagnostic of your transmission, throttle control system, and brake components to identify what caused the sudden unintended acceleration.

Your car's ABS (anti-lock brake) warning light is on, and a diagnostic test at Auto Zone showed a fault code in the ABS system. The dealership service department has dismissed the code and says there's nothing wrong with your brakes, but the diagnostic evidence suggests otherwise. Resolving this will likely require a proper ABS system diagnostic and repair, which may involve checking the ABS module, sensors, or wiring.

While you were sitting in your parked car on a 48-degree day waiting for it to warm up, your rear driver's side window suddenly cracked and shattered into pieces without any impact or warning. No other vehicles were nearby and nothing hit the window — it simply broke on its own. This will require replacing the rear window glass.

Your car was in a front-end collision at speeds over 30 mph, but the front passenger side airbag failed to deploy. This is a serious safety issue that should be inspected immediately by a technician to determine why the airbag system didn't activate as designed.

Your rear-view mirror suddenly started smoking and filling your car with smoke while you were backing up. When you pulled the wires out of the mirror, you saw them arcing (sparking). The smoke stopped after you disconnected the mirror. This indicates an electrical short circuit or failure in the mirror assembly that created a fire hazard.

You purchased a used 2003 Toyota Camry, and the odometer showed 127,888 miles when you bought it. However, when you tried to register the vehicle, you discovered the actual mileage was 165,064 miles — a difference of over 37,000 miles. This suggests the odometer may have been tampered with or rolled back before the sale. You may need to have the odometer inspected and potentially report odometer fraud to your local authorities or the seller.

Your driver's side seat belt won't click into the buckle properly and sometimes releases on its own. This issue has been happening intermittently for a couple of years and has now stopped working completely, leaving you unable to buckle the belt. Your driver's side seat belt buckle keeps unlatching on its own while you're driving, requiring you to manually push the metal clasp back into the slot to re-engage it. The buckle sometimes stays latched and sometimes pops back open unpredictably, which triggers a dashboard warning light. This issue has been happening for about 2 months.

Filed: Jun 2022

Your engine died while accelerating at a traffic light just 25 miles after purchase, and it wouldn't restart. A mechanic discovered the engine had no coolant despite the radiator appearing full, and found three damaged coolant seals, a poorly installed head gasket, and a jumped timing chain. The repair will likely require either a complete engine replacement or extensive internal engine work to address the timing chain and gasket issues.

While turning into your parking space and easing off the gas pedal toward the brake, your car suddenly accelerated on its own and crashed through a gate. The front bumper, grille, hood, and headlights were damaged in the collision. This could involve a problem with the throttle control system, cruise control, or fuel system that caused unexpected acceleration.

Filed: May 2023

Your mechanic found that several components under your car—the subframe (which supports the engine and suspension), muffler, brakes, and gas tank—have severe rust and corrosion. This level of rust can affect the structural integrity of your vehicle and the safety of critical systems like braking. Addressing this will likely require replacing or repairing the corroded parts, which could be extensive given the vehicle's age and mileage.

After having your oxygen sensors replaced, your check engine light and traction control warning lights came on and won't turn off. You've also noticed your car is using more fuel than usual and there's a slight delay when you accelerate. Your driver's side power seat is stuck in the forward position and won't move. Your emergency brake doesn't work. Your engine is burning through oil very quickly—you need to add a gallon every 2,000 miles, which indicates a serious oil leak or internal engine problem. You'll need to have the seat motor and mechanism inspected, the emergency brake system repaired, and the engine diagnosed for oil leaks or worn seals.
