2019 Subaru Crosstrek Wipers & Visibility Problems

My 2019 Subaru Crosstrek has a little over 19000 miles on it, and my windshield has cracked for the third time. The first time was after a rock strike at the edge of my windshield; the vehicle did not make it the couple miles home before it had split several inches. The second and third times seem spontaneous.

I was driving down highway 1 and my driver's right side window suddenly exploded and shattered into a thousand pieces, raining glass down all over me. I didn't have a crack previously and a rock didn't hit it so there was nothing to cause this. There were no other cars on the highway at the time.

I woke up one morning and found my windshield cracked. It's literally above the defroster for the glass when its winter. It spread for no reason nothing was thrown and I was not in any accident for that to crack on it's own because it was cold.

A crack on the windshield appeared for no apparent reason . The crack started on the passenger side right below the windshield wiper. At this time, the vehicle has not been inspected by insurance or police. Besides the financial burden this may cause it has not caused any physical harm to myself or others. However, it is a known issue with Subarus in the past and should be addressed.

I have had to have my windshield replaced four times since purchasing the vehicle in June of 2021. Small chips and cracks have formed from the smallest debris on the road, and even a small rock can cause a foot-long crack.

Windshield Replacement due to rock chips: Within 3 months of purchasing my Crosstrek, my windshield received 3 rock chips: I will say, I don't drive OFF ROAD. I drive on the highways or paved city streets. When this first occurred in 2018 (purchased in Oct2018), I was shocked.

I own a 2019 Subaru Crosstrek Premium. Today, I noticed a crack in my windshield as I got in my car in my garage. There was no impact to the windshield that could have caused the crack in the windshield, and the night before there was no crack visible.

I parked my vehicle in my garage last evening no Crack in my windshield. Today I went to go out to eat and I had a 3" Crack starting at the edge middle of the driver's side. I drove 4 miles to the restaurant and now it's 8" long.

TWO incidents: 1) Within a month of buying a brand new car, the windshield chipped. A small pebble hit the windshield while driving it. I've been hit by hundreds of small pebbles in other cars over the years and never had a chip.

While driving at a slow speed (<15mph) I had to stop quickly at an intersection. A small board inside the car (<1 lb, 2'x12") connected with the windshield causing a substantial crack approximately 10 inches in diameter. The windshield is absolutely unsafe and will need to be replaced(although has not yet been seen by the dealer.)

After having cowl replaced under warranty, at the dealership, I drove vehicle home (3 miles) and placed in garage. Next day, noticed 10 inch crack on lower passenger side of windshield. Took car to have looked at by dealership who stated crack had to come from rock and refused to replace.

2 MONTHS AFTER I PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE I NOTICED A SMALL CRACK IN MY WINDSHIELD THAT HAS SINCE STARTED TO BECOME LONGER. NO ACCIDENTS OR FALLING OBJECTS THAT COULD HAVE CREATED THE CRACK.

WINDSHIELD IS VERY EASILY CRACKED OR CHIPPED FROM THE SMALLEST PEBBLES HITTING IT WHILE GOING EVEN 35 MPH. WITH THE ADAPTIVE CRUISE CONTROL, GETTING THE WINDSHIELD FIXED AND THE SENSORS RECALIBRATED COULD COST A FORTUNE.

OVERNIGHT, SOMETHING FELL ON MY VEHICLE AND CRACKED THE WINDSHIELD. THE CRACK TRAVELS A GOOD THIRD OF THE WIDTH OF THE VEHICLE. WE THINK IT IS A MANUFACTURING DEFECT AS THE SUBARU WAS STREET-PARKED UNDERNEATH A POWER LINE, AND WE DIDN'T FIND ANYTHING SUBSTANTIAL AROUND THE CAR THAT COULD HAVE CRACKED IT.

ONE DAY IN AUGUST, I WENT TO MY CAR PARKED IN THE GARAGE AND NOTICED A CRACK COMING UP FROM THE BOTTOM OF THE WINDSHIELD. I HAVE HAD NOTHING HIT THE WINDSHIELD IN SEVERAL MONTHS AND NEVER IN THAT AREA. ON 3 SEPARATE OCCASIONS AFTER THAT, AS I TOOK THE CAR OUT OF THE GARAGE, I NOTICED IT LENGTHENING HORIZONTAL BY ABOUT 3 INCHES EACH TIME.

BEEN DRIVING SUBARUS FOR MANY YEARS AND HAVE ALWAYS LOVED THEM...UNTIL NOW. GOT JUST OVER 11,300 MILES ON THE CAR SINCE I HARDLY DRIVE IT ANYMORE DUE TO THE PANDEMIC. WHILE DRIVING MY FIRST TIME OUT IN WEEKS, A SMALL PEBBLE HIT WINDSHIELD ON LEFT SIDE AND THE GLASS IMMEDIATELY CRACKED ABOUT 6" IN LENGTH. BY THE TIME I GOT HOME IT HAD TRAVELED TO ABOUT 9". THIS WAS A VERY SMALL PEBBLE THAT BARELY MADE A SOUND AND THAT SHOULD HAVE BOUNCED OFF WITH NO DAMAGE OR AT THE VERY MOST, MAYBE LEFT A CHIP BUT THE CRACKED WINDSHIELD SHOULD NOT HAVE HAPPENED. THE WINDSHIELDS ARE SUPPOSEDLY COATED WITH A SPECIAL SOMETHING THAT DEFLECTS SMALL ROCKS........YEA, I DON'T THINK SO! I SEE THAT THERE IS A CLASS ACTION SUIT AGAINST SUBARU FOR THIS VERY THING. NO ONE WILL FIX IT TO STOP THE TRAVELING CRACK, THEY ALL SAY IT MUST BE REPLACED DUE TO THE SAFETY FEATURES OF THE VEHICLE/GLASS. WELL THE WINDSHIELD REPLACEMENT IS SUPER EXPENSIVE BECAUSE OF THE "EYESIGHT" FEATURE AND THE CAMERAS. THESE CARS ARE NOT CHEAP AND I WOULD EXPECT HIGHER QUALITY FROM SUBARU. VERY DISAPPOINTED IN THE BRAND NOW.

WINDSHIELD CRACKS EASILY AND THE CRACKS SPREAD QUICKLY. I'VE HAD 2 CRACKS SO FAR ON A 2019 VEHICLE FROM LIGHT PEBBLE IMPACT COMING FROM THE ROAD. COST ESTIMATE TO REPLACE IS VERY HIGH AS THE VEHICLE HAS EYESIGHT. SUBARU CLAIMS IF YOU DON'T USE THE OEM WINDSHIELD EYESIGHT MAY NOT WORK. OVER $1000 TO REPLACE?? SMALL CRACK HAPPENED FIRST RIGHT AFTER VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED. HAD IT "REPAIRED" SINCE IT WAS NOT A SAFETY OR VISION ISSUE. NEW CRACK IS RIGHT IN LINE OF SIGHT ON DRIVERS SIDE.

NO KNOWN ISSUE OCCURRED, YET THE WINDSHIELD STARTED A CRACK FROM THE DRIVERS SIDE EDGE AND RAPIDLY MOVED ACROSS THE WINDSHIELD ABOUT 12 INCHES. DURING HIGHWAY DRIVING IT MAY HAVE CAUGHT A PEBBLE (DON'T RECALL THIS HAPPENING BUT I'VE EXPERIENCED THIS WITH OTHER CARS), BUT STILL THAT WOULDN'T EXPLAIN THE RAPID CRACKING.

I BOUGHT THIS CAR A LITTLE OVER A YEAR AGO. (BOUGHT JUNE 2019 AND CURRENTLY SEPTEMBER 2020). IN JANUARY I WAS DRIVING ON THE INTERSTATE AND A HEARD A LIGHT "TING" ON MY WINDSHIELD (I'VE HAD CARS BEFORE THIS ONE, AND I'VE NEVER GOTTEN A CRACK FROM SOMETHING LIKE THAT) AND MY WINDSHIELD GOT A CHIP IN IT THAT IN DIAMETER WAS A LITTLE LARGER THAN A QUARTER. I GOT THAT FIXED QUICKLY AFTER IT HAPPENED. THEN, 4 DAYS AGO I WAS DRIVING ON THE INTERSTATE AND THIS "TING" WAS A LITTLE LOUDER. I DIDN'T SEE ANY DAMAGE AT FIRST, BUT IT WAS BECAUSE IT WAS BEHIND MY REARVIEW MIRROR, AND WHEN I GOT OUT IT WAS A CRACK ABOUT A FOOT LONG. I'VE BEEN DRIVING SINCE I WAS 16 AND I'M 23 NOW, AND I'VE NEVER HAD THESE THINGS HAPPEN. TO GET TWO INCIDENTS IN LESS THAN A YEAR SEEMS SUSPICIOUS TO ME.

WINDSHIELD CRACKED NEEDING REPLACEMENT AFTER NO NOTICABLE ROCK HITTING IT

WINDSHIELD EASILY SUSCEPTIBLE TO ROCK CHIPS COMPARED TO PREVIOUS MODEL CROSSTREK (2014) DRIVING THE SAME ROADS. HAVE RECEIVED 2 ROCK CHIPS IN WINDSHIELD LESS THAN 1 MONTH APART FROM ANOTHER WHILE DRIVING ON SUBURBAN ROADS WHERE SPEED LIMIT IS 55MPH.

WINDSHIELD CRACKED FOR NO REASON, CREATING A LONG CRACK HALFWAY DOWN MY WINDSHIELD. VEHICLE WAS STATIONARY, PARKED ON SIDE STREET. MILEAGE WAS AROUND 9,000 MILES. 2019 SUBARU CROSSTREK

NOTICED WINDSHIELD WAS CRACKED STARTING WHERE THE DEFROSTER LINES ARE. DEFROSTER WAS NOT BEING USED THAT DAY THOUGH AS IT WAS 100 DEGREES THAT DAY. DON'T RECALL IT HAPPENING WHILE I WAS DRIVING. NOTICED IT AFTER I GOT IN THE CAR TO DRIVE HOME FROM WORK.

A SMALL CRACK IN THE LOWER DRIVERS SIDE WINDSHIELD APPEARED WITH NO KNOWN REASON. IT HAS NOW SPREAD LARGER. ONLY 2 DRIVERS AND BOTH DENY EVER HEARING A ROCK OR REASON FOR THE WINDSHIELD TO CRACK. THE CAR WAS PARKED IN GARAGE WITH NO KNOWN CRACK AND THE NEXT MORNING A CRACK APPEARED.

WHILE DRIVING ON AN INTERSTATE, A CRACK FORMED ON MY WINDSHIELD. IT STARTED PRECISELY AT THE BASE AND WENT UPWARD CLEANLY ABOUT 4 INCHES. NO OBJECTS HIT THE WINDSHIELD, AND THERE WERE NO PRIOR CRACKS.

VERY SMALL ROCK HIT WINDSHIELD ON THE HIGHWAY AND CAUSED A GOOD SIZED CHIP. I UNDERSTAND THAT THESE WINDSHIELDS ARE UNDER INVESTIGATION FOR BREAKING TOO EASILY ON THIS SUBARU MODEL.

THERE'S A CRACK THAT STARTS ABOUT AN INCH FROM THE PASSENGER SIDE EDGE ENDING NEAR THE REAR VIEW MIRROR. A SMALL CRACK APPEARED ON THE EDGE THE MORNING AFTER A LONG TRIP AND WITHIN THE SAME DAY SPREAD ALL THE WAY TO THE CENTER. *TR

SMALL PEBBLE FROM ROADWAY (TRAVELING ABOUT 30 MPH) CAUSED SIGNIFICANT CRACK TO PROPAGATE ACROSS WINDSHIELD. *TR

THE WINDSHIELD CONTINUOUSLY ACCUMULATES SMALL CHIPS IN THE ROAD-FACING SURFACE OF THE GLASS. SOME CHIPS FROM LARGE ROCKS ARE TO BE EXPECTED, BUT THERE ARE FAR, FAR MORE SMALL CHIPS THAN CAN BE ACCOUNTED FOR BY LARGE ROCKS HITTING THE GLASS. THESE CHIPS APPEAR TO OCCUR WHEN SOMETHING AS SMALL AS GRIT FROM ROAD SANDING (DURING SNOW) HITS THE WINDSHIELD. THIS CAUSES A SAFETY ISSUE BECAUSE THE VEHICLE IS EQUIPPED WITH EYESIGHT TECHNOLOGY. WHEN SUNLIGHT OR HEADLIGHTS CATCH THESE CHIPS AT CERTAIN ANGLES, LIGHT IS REFLECTED TOWARDS THE EYESIGHT CAMERAS. THIS CAUSES THE EYESIGHT SYSTEM TO SUDDENLY ALERT THAT AN OBJECT MAY BE IN FRONT OF THE VEHICLE. ON AT LEAST ONE OCCASION, THIS LIGHT REFLECTION OCCURRED FOR A LONG ENOUGH DURATION THAT THE CAR APPLIED THE BRAKES IN AN EFFORT TO STOP. *TR

THE WINDSHIELD CRACKED FROM THE BOTTOM UP, TWICE WITHIN 9 MONTHS. I BOUGHT THE VEHICLE BRAND NEW. THE FIRST TIME, THE DEALER WAS NICE ENOUGH TO REPLACE IT FOR FREE. THE SECOND WINDSHIELD HAS ONLY BEEN INSTALLED FOR ABOUT 4 MONTHS. PICTURE ATTACHED IS THE SECOND CRACK. FIRST CRACK STARTED ON THE PASSENGER SIDE SEEMINGLY OUT OF NOWHERE. IT WAS PARKED IN A GARAGE AND I CAME OUT AFTER WORK TO A CRACK 4-6 INCHES LONG. *TR

CRACKED WINDSHIELD. AS I DRIVING DOWN HIGHWAY AROUND 65MPH, SMALL ROCK HIT PASSENGER SIDE LOWER WINDOW UNDER WIPER BLADE. AND CRACKED I HAD WINDSHIELD REPLACED WITH AFTERMARKET SUBARU WINDSHIELD. THIS WINDSHIELD HAS ALREADY SCRATCHED FROM THE WIPER BLADE WHICH IS BRAND NEW AND HAS LITTLE FEW LITTLE CHIPS IN IT. . *TR

A very small rock that was flung from another vehicle about 40-50 ahead of me, going 35 miles per hour on a straight away in town, hit my windshield resulting in a small star which within about 10 minutes turned into a large crack spanning from the lower passenger side upwards toward the middle of the windshield.

I purchased a brand new subaru crosstrex from the dealer on may 28th, and it arrived with less than 200 miles on it. On june 9th, never travelled on a highway and only driven on village streets surrounding my home, it encountered a chip/small crack. This was repaired immediately.

Driving on road when windshield hit by small rock (hardly made a noise when hit) and windshield cracked. Purchased car april 2019 and crack happened late june, 2019. Previously had a forrester and and several rocks which hit windshield very hard with no cracking.

Appears my windshield cracked for no apparent reason unexpectedly while driving at 55mph. The cracked is about 18 inches long, extending from the passenger lower side all the way to the driver lower side. The windshield also appears to be defected as it gathers moisture, has poor road/wind noise blockage capabilities and cracks easily.

Driving through kansas my windshield cracked, I thought due to the wind, and I had to file an insurance claim for it to be replaced, paying a $250 deductible on a $1022 bill.

I purchased the vehicle brand new off of the dealer lot. I went outside one morning to replace the paper temporary license plate with the permanent license plate and a crack spanning from the bottom of the windshield on the passenger side in an l shape, up the middle, to the top of the winshield, approximately 45 inches long had appeared overnight without any damage to the vehicle occuring.

On 1/18/2019, I was driving with my wife approximately 40mph with several car lengths between me and the next car when we heard a loud pop sound. We didn't see anything hit the car and saw no damage to the windshield at that time. Several hours later a crack developed on the passenger side of the windshield starting below the windshield wiper.

The windshield cracked at the bottom center while sitting in the driveway. It is not from a rock hitting it. Clean "line" 1 foot long.

My crosstrek has had the windshield replaced twice so far in 2019, both due to cracks that occurred during normal driving operation. Each time, the windshield had been crack free before the crack occurred. Both times, the windshield cracked while on the highway, although at different speeds (65 MPH and 30 MPH).

WAS DRIVING ON HIGHWAY AND SMALL PIECE OF DEBRIS OR ROCK HIT THE FRONT WINDSHIELD CAUSING A CRACK. THIS CAR HAS DRIVEN ROUGHLY 4300 MILES. SEEMS AS THOUGH THE WINDSHIELD CRACKS TOO EASILY.

SMALL ROCK HIT WINDSHIELD AND THE WINDSHIELD HAD A LARGE ROCK CHIP DUE TO THIS. SEEMED ODD TO HAVE SUCH A LARGE ROCK CHIP WITH THE SMALL SIZE OF ROCK THAT HIT.

I purchased the car on 12/26/2018. I have two chips in the windshield, the first coming less than three months (less than 6,000 miles) after purchase and the last one on 10/9/2019. Both occurred while driving the vehicle.

Had a crack develop in front of the driver seemingly out of nowhere. Had safelite autoglass come out and repair it at $115 out of pocket.

I was driving my 2019 crosstrek on the highway on the way to work when I heard a loud cracking noise, which I realized came from a deep chip that appeared on the lower windshield. I assumed a vehicle ahead must have kicked up a rock, as there were no obvious vehicles or other objects that could have fallen on it anywhere nearby.

CRACKED WINDSHIELD

Front windshield near drivers side bottom portion defroster area (all the way down starting from behind black plastic cover) has developed a 7 inch crack ending for time being in a fish hook at top of crack. Dealer claims extremely small pin size strike point was cause.

While driving on a wooded tree lined street at approx. 40mph, the right rear passenger window imploded. The glass shattered and fell onto my daughter who was in her car seat.

A few days ago my new subaru crosstrek developed a spontaneous crack in the windshield. The crack started at the dashboard near the defroster and extended up almost to the roof. I had it repaired by safelight windshield specialists who agreed with me that there was no evidence of a rock or other damage to the windshield to explain the crack.

The windshield cracked without impact or any other obvious means of damage. I have had 2 other windshields crack in the same manner, the first being December 2022, second March 2024, and now April 2025. All incidents have starts from the bottom on the windshield on the passenger side, and spreading towards the roof.

The windshield cracked for no reason while parked in our garage. The windshield was not stuck by any objects, the car was simply setting parked in our garage. There is no evidence of any object striking the windshield such as a rock chip or other items.

We went to put groceries in our trunk and the rear driver side window shattered and my 2 year old was in the car. Glass got inside the car where his car seat was, and the entire window shattered on the ground. There was nothing touching the window to make the window shatter when I shut the trunk

Rear view mirror fell off while driving down the hwy. when the mirror detached from the front windshield it sent small shards of class on to me and my wife. This startled me and caused me to jerk the wheel.

I am about to get my second windshield on this car due to chips and cracks. I currently have 7 with one large spider crack. I have never owned a car that had a windshield that chipped and cracked so much.

Windshield cracked randomly while car was parked at my house. The crack isstarting from from bottom corner at seam. And extends almost all the way up in 1 single crack.

Windshield accumulated a small crack in the lower passenger side, about 6in long and a quarter up from the bottom of windshield. It's now continued to grow and is now half of the windshield.

Within a month of owning this vehicle new, the windshield formed a crack in it randomly. A few weeks later It formed another in the center near the driver's side making it harder to focus on the road. Now we have 2 cracks next to each other obstructing the driver's view.

This vehicle has a crack across the lower part of windshield. Apparently this is a notorious subaru problem I'm told.

My windshield has a crack in the lower section on the passenger side coming up from the bottom of the windshield. There is no indication that it was hit by anything, there is just a crack. In fact, it was parked in the garage and next time we got in it we noticed the crack.

The windshield cracked seemingly at random during the winter. It was approximately 15 degrees on I-70 in CO on December 11, 2020. The windshield suddenly cracked with no indication of impact.

The windshield is cracked with no visible chips or damage causing the crack. I have never had a rock fly and hit the windshield or anything. It seems to have cracked with no apparent reason.

The windshield has cracked without cause. Thankfully the windshield cracked while it was parked. Cracking all on its own without being hit or damaged is incredibly frightening and dangerous.

Windshield cracked during cold weather. Windshield seems to be defective.

I woke up one morning and when I went to my car that was parked in my driveway overnight I saw a crack in the windshield that was not there when I got home the night before. The crack looks like it starts where the de icer is located on the bottom of the passenger side.

Front windshield cracked while driving on I-65. My speed was 75 MPH. I did not hear anything hit the windshield.

A few days ago I went out to my shop to get in my car to go to work and when I got in my car I noticed a giant crack in the window that is in the middle of the window down at the bottom and it starts under the wipers and is about 6 inches long. Then a few days went by and I was driving to work again on the high way in the rain and it cracked another 2 inches.

The front windshield of the vehicle has developed a large crack for apparently no reason. The crack appeared behind the rearview mirror and was approximately 6" across. Since then, the crack has extended to nearly a foot across.

Sustained very small stone chip below passenger side of windshield. This occurred while driving and also spread further while driving to about 50% of the way up the passenger side of the windshield. I have also experienced more stone chips and cracks as a result of this windshield situation.

While driving on the freeway at 60 MPH, a small rock popped up and hit my windshield immediately causing an approximate one inch chip in the glass. Approximately 5 seconds later, the chip expanded to an almost 12 inch crack on the passenger side of the vehicle. A small rock should not have caused that much damaged to any windshield.

Small chips and cracks in the windshield from tiny rocks hitting it while driving around 35 miles per hour on city streets and 70 miles per hour on highways. These cracks have happened multiple times from small rocks and debris.

While driving at approximately 65mph on the 55 freeway south, my windshield 'popped' and developed a chip, which looks as though it was hit by a rock, but it was not. The windshield has also developed myriad imperfections, which appear as water spots, but are not removable.

I bought new 2019 subaru outback 3 weeks ago and I see a crack developed from passenger side of the windshield in the center for no reason while the car was parked in the garage for more than 36 hours.I didn't experience anything hitting the windshield, and its spreading over 2 ft across the windshield. Bought a brand new 2019 subaru crosstrek, a crack at the bottom of the windshield just appeared one morning after warming it up in 20 degree weather, in michigan. Crack started in the wiper heating element area and the crack spread all the way to the top. No rock chips are present.
