NHTSA Campaign: 18V907000
Component: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:DELIVERY:HOSES, LINES/PIPING, AND FITTINGS
Kia Motors America (Kia) is recalling certain 2011-2017 Optima, 2012-2017 Sorento and 2011-2018 Sportage vehicles that previously received an engine replacement under recall number 17V-224, warranty, or the Knock Sensor Detection System (KSDS) Product Improvement Campaign. The high pressure fuel pipe that connects to the fuel pump outlet may have been damaged, misaligned or improperly torqued during the engine replacement procedure, possibly causing a fuel leak.
Risk: A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source can increase the risk of a fire.
Fix: Kia has notified owners, and dealers will inspect and replace the fuel pipe, as necessary, free of charge. The recall began January 17, 2019. Owners may contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542. Kia's number for this recall is SC172.
NHTSA Campaign: 21V137000
Component: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:ANTILOCK/TRACTION CONTROL/ELECTRONIC LIMITED SLIP:CONTROL UNIT/MODULE
Kia Motors America (Kia) is recalling certain 2017-2021 Sportage and Cadenza vehicles. The electrical circuit in the Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit (HECU) may short-circuit, which can cause a fire in the engine compartment.
Risk: An engine compartment fire can increase the risk of injury.
Fix: Owners are advised to park outside and away from structures as a precaution until the recall repair is complete. Kia will notify owners, and dealers will replace certain fuses in the electrical junction box. Vehicles equipped with an electronic parking brake (EPB) will also receive a HECU software update. Repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began on April 30, 2021. Owners may contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542. Kia's number for this recall is SC206.
NHTSA Campaign: 22V703000
Component: TRAILER HITCHES
Kia America, Inc. (Kia) is recalling certain 2016-2022 Sorento, 2021-2022 Sorento Hybrid (HEV), 2022-2023 Sorento Plug-In Hybrid (PHEV), and 2017-2022 Sportage vehicles equipped with a tow hitch harness installed as original equipment, or purchased as an accessory through a Kia dealership. Debris and moisture accumulation on the tow hitch harness module printed circuit board (PCB) may cause an electrical short, which can result in a fire.
Risk: A fire while parked or driving can increase the risk of injury.
Fix: Owners are advised to park outside and away from structures until the recall repair is complete. Dealers will inspect the vehicle, and, as necessary, replace the fuse and/or tow hitch harness module, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed August 11, 2023. Owners may contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542. Kia's number for this recall is SC249.
Owner-Reported Issues (20 of 151)
Engine →10 issues
Your 2018 Kia Sportage consumed oil excessively, which Kia didn't warn owners about, leading to complete engine failure at 117,000 miles despite regular maintenance and oil changes. Kia refused to replace the engine even with maintenance records provided, and their customer service was unresponsive for months while your car sat in the lot. This vehicle is part of a class action lawsuit related to the engine design defect.

Your engine stalled suddenly while driving at 55 mph on the highway during rush hour, nearly causing a rear-end collision. After the stall, your vehicle couldn't accelerate past 30 mph. This issue may be related to known problems with Theta II engines that have been subject to recalls. Resolving this will likely require a full engine diagnostic and possibly engine repair or replacement under recall.

Your 2018 Kia Sportage's engine computer detected a warning code indicating excessive wear on the connecting rod bearings and put the engine into limp mode to prevent damage. This is part of a known issue with 2.4L Theta II engines that can lead to engine seizure. Your vehicle may be eligible for a free engine replacement under a settlement, but Kia's website incorrectly says your vehicle doesn't qualify. You should contact Kia immediately to clarify your warranty coverage before continuing to drive, as further operation risks sudden engine failure.

Your check engine light keeps showing error code P1326 even after you replaced the knock sensor. Your mechanic suspects the problem may be internal engine damage (rod bearings) and recommended a full engine replacement. Your vehicle's year, make, and model are part of a Kia recall for this issue, but your specific VIN isn't listed—even though you're experiencing the same symptoms. You've also noticed your engine stalling and losing power while driving.

Your engine is burning excessive oil, which is being pushed into the catalytic converter and clogging it. This causes exhaust fumes to enter your cabin, forcing you to open windows for fresh air, and your engine isn't running properly. Even after replacing the catalytic converter, fumes still occasionally enter the cabin because the engine continues consuming excessive oil. The root cause—the engine's oil consumption problem—needs to be fixed to fully resolve the issue.

Your engine is burning through oil much faster than normal — consuming about one quart every 1000 miles instead of the manufacturer's expected rate. This excessive oil consumption has been confirmed by your Kia dealership through multiple tests and is believed to be caused by fouled piston rings, which is a known issue for this engine. If the oil level gets too low while you're driving, your engine could fail and leave you stranded in traffic or bad weather, creating a safety hazard.

Your engine is consuming oil at an unusually high rate — burning more than a quart in less than 1,000 miles — and your low oil warning light has come on. This excessive oil burn started around 100,000 miles on your vehicle. The issue likely involves internal engine wear or a leak that will need diagnosis and repair, possibly including engine sealing work or internal component replacement.

Your engine is consuming oil faster than normal, and the dealership is requiring you to pay for an oil consumption test and combustion chamber cleaning before considering an engine replacement. The dealership says they'll only replace the engine if it seals up while you're driving, which creates a safety risk for you and other drivers. You're seeing low oil warning lights and check engine lights related to this issue, and Kia has denied warranty coverage despite a prior class action lawsuit involving the same problem.

Engine And Engine Cooling →2 issues
Your engine is consuming oil faster than normal. After an oil change, your low oil pressure warning light came on with a "Service Engine" message and a dinging sound while driving. The dealer added oil, but the warning returned the next day. The dealer started an oil consumption test but wants you to pay for additional testing to diagnose the problem, which you declined. Your engine may have internal wear, a leak, or a defect causing the oil loss.

Your 2018 Kia Sportage may not accelerate properly when you press the gas pedal, and you might notice the KSDS warning light turning on. You may also see higher than normal oil consumption, and the problem can happen again after restarting the vehicle. The dealer found that your camshaft needs to be replaced to fix the acceleration issue.

Electrical System,exterior Lighting →1 issue
Your headlights won't work on low beam on either side, making the car unsafe to drive at night. You've already replaced the bulbs, headlight assemblies, turn signal switch, relay, and fuses, but the low beams still don't function—only the high beams and turn signals work. The repair will likely require a diagnostic of the headlight wiring circuit and electrical connections to identify why power isn't reaching the low beam filaments.

Electrical System,vehicle Speed Control,engine →1 issue
Your 2018 Kia Sportage experienced a complete engine failure while driving on September 30, 2025, and had to be towed to a dealership. A previous oil retention test in August 2024 had already identified a defective engine, but Kia declined to replace it at that time. The engine failure appears to match a known Kia engine defect pattern. Fixing this issue will require a full engine replacement or major internal engine repair to address the low compression and combustion chamber failure.

Structure →1 issue
Your 2018 Kia Sportage's paint is peeling off in multiple areas, including under the hood near the front bumper, on the roof, and on the hood itself, revealing white primer underneath. This is happening despite regular home washing and no exposure to commercial car washes. The peeling appears to be getting worse over time. The fix would likely involve having Kia refinish or repaint the affected areas under warranty.
