Component: PARKING BRAKE
ON CERTAIN SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES, THE PARKING BRAKE LEVER RATCHET PAWL WAS NOT PROPERLY MANUFACTURED AND MY DAMAGE THE TEETH OF THE PARKING BRAKE LEVER RATCHET. DAMAGED PARKING BRAKE LEVER RATCHET TEETH MAY PREVENT THE PARKING BRAKE FROM ENGAGING OR MAY ALLOW THE PARKING BRAKE TO RELEASE AFTER IT HAS BEEN ENGAGED.
Risk: THE INABILITY TO ENGAGE, OR THE INADVERTENT RELEASE OF, THE PARKING BRAKE LEVER MAY ALLOW YOUR VEHICLE TO ROLL WHILE IT IS PARKED AND MAY RESULT IN A CRASH.
Fix: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE PARKING BRAKE LEVER ASSEMBLY. THE RECALL BEGAN ON AUGUST 1, 2005. OWNERS MAY CONTACT KIA AT 1-800-333-4542.
NHTSA Campaign: 05V120000
Component: ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL:AUTOMATIC (ASC)
ON CERTAIN SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH ELECTRONIC STABILITY PROGRAM (ESP), THE YAW RATE SENSOR MAY BECOME TOO SENSITIVE AND MAY RECALIBRATE INACCURATELY. WHILE DRIVING THE ESP PROGRAM MAY CAUSE THE ENGINE TO REDUCE POWER AND MAY CAUSE A BRAKE AT ONE OF THE WHEELS TO BE INAPPROPRIATELY.
Risk: BRAKE APPLICATION CAUSED BY INADVERTENT ESP ACTIVATION MAY RESULT IN LOSS OF CONTROL AND A CRASH.
Fix: DEALERS WILL REPROGRAM THE ESP HYDRAULIC ELECTRONIC CONTROL UNIT FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON APRIL 13, 2005. OWNERS MAY CONTACT KIA AT 1-800-333-4542.

Risk: THE ENGINE MAY STALL WHEN COMING TO A STOP. IT WILL BE HARD TO FILL THE GAS TANK AND EXTERNAL FUEL MAY LEAK FROM THE EVAPORATIVE AIR FILTER INLET. FUEL LEAKAGE, IN THE PRESENCE OF AN IGNITION SOURCE, COULD RESULT IN A FIRE.
Fix: DEALERS WILL INSPECT AND REPLACE THE FUEL TANK AND REPLACE THE CHARCOAL CANISTER FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON MAY 31, 2005. OWNERS MAY CONTACT KIA AT 1-800-333-4542.
Owner-Reported Issues (20 of 68)
Unknown Or Other →2 issues
During a routine service visit, you were informed that your vehicle's frame has severe rust and rot damage that makes it unsafe to drive. You've kept the car parked out of concern that the frame could fail completely and cause a serious accident involving your family or other drivers. Addressing this will likely require professional frame inspection and extensive rust repair or replacement of affected frame sections.

Your vehicle's frame has developed significant rust and holes, particularly at the rear end. A mechanic has determined the damage is severe enough that the vehicle is unsafe to drive and will fail safety inspection because the rear axle could separate from the frame at any time. This appears to be a widespread problem affecting this model year.

Structure →2 issues
Your mechanic discovered severe rust damage to your car's frame and sub-rails that poses a safety risk, making the vehicle unsafe to drive until those structural parts are replaced. While your clutch also needs repair, your mechanic advised against driving the car at all until the frame damage is addressed. Fixing this issue will require professional frame and floor repair or replacement, which is a major structural repair.

Your vehicle's subframe has severely corroded, and you've noticed holes in both the fuel tank line and the catalytic converter brake line. This corrosion was confirmed by an independent mechanic at 117,000 miles. Addressing this will likely require replacing the corroded subframe components, fuel line, and brake line.

Fuel/propulsion System →2 issues
After filling up your gas tank, your 2005 Kia Sportage has trouble restarting, and on at least one occasion it shut off without warning while driving. You suspect this may be related to a fuel system issue, though the vehicle hasn't been inspected or repaired by a dealer. The problem started around 185,991 miles and may involve a fuel system component that needs diagnostic inspection and possible replacement.

Your 2005 Kia Sportage was subject to a fuel system recall (NHTSA campaign 05V212000), but the repair parts were not available from the manufacturer for an extended period. While you haven't experienced the actual fuel system failure yet, the delay in obtaining replacement parts prevented the recall repair from being completed in a reasonable timeframe. The fix will involve installing the recalled fuel system component once parts become available.

Wheels,unknown Or Other,service Brakes →1 issue
Your ESP (electronic stability control) button stays on and won't turn off, along with your airbag and engine warning lights remaining illuminated. You've also experienced a hard-to-engage parking brake that activates while driving, difficulty pressing the gas pedal, and most concerningly, a complete loss of vehicle control on the freeway — you believe this is related to the ESP system malfunction. Your parking brake also fails to fully hold the vehicle when engaged.

Suspension,unknown Or Other →1 issue
Your 2005 Kia Sportage's rear driver-side suspension suddenly failed when the rear sub-frame rusted through and separated from the suspension, causing the rear axle to fall out. This made the wheel angle sharply outward, though it happened at low speed. If this failure had occurred at highway speeds, it could have caused a serious accident.

Vehicle Speed Control →1 issue
Your car's throttle body spring broke, causing the engine to keep accelerating on its own even when you weren't pressing the gas pedal. The car would not slow down or stop properly. This is a serious safety issue that requires replacing the throttle body assembly or the spring component.

Unknown Or Other,fuel/propulsion System →1 issue
Your Kia Sportage stalled in traffic right after you refueled it, causing you to nearly lose control of the vehicle. The car stopped receiving fuel, and you noticed there's a recall related to a fuel tank strap, though your dealer says the recall only covers the strap that holds the fuel tank in place. The fuel system may need inspection and repair to restore proper fuel delivery and prevent stalling.

Engine →1 issue
Your car suddenly stopped while driving 80 mph on the freeway with no warning signs, and it wouldn't restart for over 30 minutes. This type of unexpected stalling at highway speed is a serious safety issue that could cause loss of control or collision. The fix will likely require engine diagnostic testing to identify whether the problem is fuel delivery, ignition system, or engine sensors.

Air Bags,seat Belts →1 issue
While driving your 2005 Kia Sportage at 40 mph, the airbag warning light came on. The dealer diagnosed that a faulty seat belt was triggering the warning. Your airbag system may not deploy properly if needed because of this seat belt issue. The repair will likely involve replacing the defective seat belt assembly.

Your airbag warning light has been on for 3-5 years, and your mechanic now says this means your airbags may not deploy in a crash — a serious safety concern. Additionally, your car stalls multiple times after you fill up the gas tank before it starts normally again, though this only happens right after refueling. Your rear brake light also shorts out repeatedly and needs to be replaced.

Steering,suspension →1 issue
Your rear suspension cross member — the part that connects your rear tie rods and control arms to the wheels — is severely rusted and at risk of breaking. This same issue has occurred on similar Hyundai models, where the failure caused a wheel to collapse while driving. You should have this inspected immediately, as a broken cross member could cause loss of control and a crash.
