ON CERTAIN VEHICLES, THE HEAT GENERATED BY THE ENGINE CAUSES REPEATED BENDING DEFORMATION OF THE POLYPROPYLENE COOLING FAN INCLUDING ITS RETAINING RING, WHICH STRESSES THE POLYPROPYLENE THEREBY INITIATING CRACKING OF THE BLADES. THE CENTRIFUGAL FORCES GENERATED BY THE ROTATION OF THE BLADES CAN CAUSE THE CRACKS TO PROPAGATE UNTIL COMPLETE SEPARATION OCCURS.

Risk: SEPARATION OF THE FAN BLADE(S) CAN CREATE A RISK OF PERSONAL INJURY.

Fix: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE ENGINE COOLING FAN WITH A FAN MADE OF IMPROVED MATERIAL. THE RECALL BEGAN ON JUNE 11, 2007. OWNERS MAY CONTACT KIA AT 1-800-333-4542.

Your vehicle may be leaking carbon monoxide into the cabin, which caused you to become drowsy while driving, leading to two separate crashes. The airbags failed to deploy in at least one of these crashes, and you suffered serious injuries requiring medical treatment. This is a life-threatening problem that requires immediate inspection of the exhaust system, cabin seals, and airbag system.

Your 2002 Kia Sportage stalled at a traffic light and leaked fuel onto the road, creating a safety hazard. The car showed symptoms matching Kia's recall #CS-048 for a fuel system issue, but the dealer said your vehicle wasn't covered under that recall. The fuel system components may need inspection and replacement to prevent future fuel leaks and potential fire hazards.

When you pull up to the gas station to refuel your car with the engine off, gasoline suddenly spurts out of the fuel tank opening and splashes on you and your clothes. This has been happening for 3 years, and you've had to resort to using a transfer pump and gas cans to refuel instead. The dealer says there's no recall available for this issue.

You're noticing a strong fuel smell coming through your vents when it's cold outside, and the odor gets worse the more you drive. The smell goes away as the car warms up, but it's causing nausea during your daily drives and you're concerned about your children's health and safety. The issue may involve a fuel system leak or evaporative emissions component that needs inspection and repair.

You're noticing fuel fumes coming from inside and around your vehicle. Your dealer found a fuel leak coming from the fuel tank itself. The manufacturer checked and said your vehicle isn't covered by any recalls for this issue. Fixing this will likely involve inspecting the fuel tank for cracks or damage and either repairing or replacing it.

Your car has a persistent strong gasoline smell inside the cabin that persists over time. The owner discovered the fuel tank venting system was clogged with carbon buildup, preventing the tank from accepting fuel during fill-ups. Clearing the obstruction in the charcoal canister resolved both the smell and the fuel acceptance problem. The fix involves inspecting and cleaning or replacing the charcoal canister in the fuel vapor recovery system.

You notice a strong fuel smell when you start your car in winter, but the smell goes away once the engine warms up. This has happened multiple times, though your dealer couldn't reproduce the problem when you brought it in. The issue likely involves fuel evaporation during cold starts, which may require inspection of the fuel system components and their seals.

Filed: Jul 2017

After a few months of driving your 2002 Kia Sportage, you noticed the car rocking side to side uncontrollably while on the road. Upon inspection, you found the frame severely rusted and deteriorating. This structural damage is a serious safety concern, particularly when transporting children, as a compromised frame can affect vehicle stability and crash protection.

NHTSA #: 11006032

Filed: Jul 2017

Despite regular cleaning and undercarriage maintenance, your 2002 Sportage's frame has developed significant rust with holes, making it unsafe to drive or inspect properly—even though the vehicle has less than 90,000 miles. The dealer indicated the frame damage is severe enough that the vehicle may need to be replaced rather than repaired. Addressing this issue would likely require professional frame inspection and either frame repair or replacement, which is typically a major structural repair.

NHTSA #: 11011179
highSTRUCTURE
Filed: Oct 2014

Your car's frame has rusted completely through in one or more areas. This is a structural integrity issue that affects the vehicle's strength and safety. A mechanic will need to inspect the extent of the rust damage and determine if welding repairs, frame replacement, or if the vehicle is beyond safe repair.

Filed: Mar 2017

Your front seat belts are frayed and won't stay properly secured, which means they may not restrain your upper body effectively during hard braking. Your rear driver's side window motor runs but won't lower the window, and your fuel door keeps spitting gasoline back out after just a couple dollars of filling. You're also noticing a burning electrical smell under the hood, with wires scorched near the cooling fan, and your engine is running hot because the fan isn't working properly.

Electrical System,unknown Or Other,engine1 issue
criticalELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
Filed: Feb 2017

Your vehicle has multiple electrical issues: the airbags failed to deploy when the car was hit while parked, the turn signals don't work, and fuses blow repeatedly whenever replaced—especially when you use the hazard lights. You're also experiencing gas fumes coming into the cabin, and your gear shifter is stuck in Park and won't move without using the bypass key. These problems suggest a serious electrical short or wiring issue that needs professional diagnosis.

criticalSUSPENSION
Filed: May 2016

Your vehicle's rear frame section is severely corroded and deteriorating beyond safe operating conditions. The rear suspension mount points are crumbling and breaking apart, even though the vehicle has only 38,000 miles and has been well-maintained in a garage. This structural damage compromises the safety and stability of your vehicle. Repair will likely require welding or replacement of the affected frame and suspension mounting components.

You've noticed a gas leak coming from the fuel tank area of your recently purchased 2002 Kia Sportage. The previous owner had replaced the gas tank and the seller had replaced the filler hose, but the leak persists. You're concerned about safely transporting your grandchildren and won't drive the vehicle until it's repaired. A mechanic will need to inspect the fuel system to locate the source of the leak, which could involve replacing fuel lines, seals, or tank components.

Service Brakes1 issue
criticalSERVICE BRAKES
Filed: Jul 2015

Your brakes failed completely while driving home, forcing you to coast to a repair shop at low speed. The mechanic discovered severe rust damage to the frame had caused the brake line to snap away, and multiple shops refused to repair it due to safety concerns. You've also experienced a strong gas smell during winter months over the years. The repair will likely require frame replacement or extensive rust remediation and brake line replacement, but multiple shops have deemed the frame damage too severe to safely repair.

Your wheel started making screeching noises and felt like it might fail. Additionally, your fuel pump cut out while driving on the highway, which nearly caused an accident. You'll need to have the wheel bearing and fuel pump inspected and replaced to restore safe operation.

Filed: Jun 2016

Your vehicle has a strong raw gasoline smell inside and outside the cabin, especially when starting or while running. Multiple mechanics and the Kia dealer have replaced the fuel filter and exhaust system without resolving the issue. The problem appears to be a corroded fuel tank due to poor design, which is a known issue in 1999-2002 Sportages. You'll likely need a fuel tank replacement or repair to address the corrosion and seal the leak.
