NHTSA Campaign: 00V205000

Component: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: SPORT UTILITY VEHICLE. THESE VEHICLES WERE DISTRIBUTED WITH OWNERS MANUALS WITH AN INCORRECT JUMP START DIAGRAM. THE WRITTEN INSTRUCTIONS FOR JUMP STARTING ARE ACCURATE. HOWEVER, THE DIAGRAM DEPICTS THE JUMPER CABLES ATTACHED TO THE WRONG POLARITY TERMINALS. IF THE DIAGRAM WERE FOLLOWED WITHOUT REFERENCE TO THE INSTRUCTIONS, THE RESULTING IMPROPER CONNECTIONS COULD CAUSE THE BATTERY TO RUPTURE AGGRESSIVELY DUE TO INCREASED INTERNAL PRESSURES.

Risk: THIS COULD CAUSE POTENTIAL SERIOUS INJURY TO BYSTANDERS.

Fix: OWNERS WILL BE PROVIDED WITH AN ADHESIVE LABEL WITH THE CORRECT ILLUSTRATION TO PERMANENTLY AFFIX TO THEIR RESPECTIVE OWNERS MANUALS.

Filed: Jul 2014

Your fuel tank has rusted through, causing a strong gasoline smell and fuel leakage. You're getting misfire warning codes, and when you open the gas cap, there's no pressure in the tank—a sign of a fuel system leak. This is a serious safety and fire hazard, and you should not drive the vehicle until it's repaired. The fix will likely require fuel tank replacement or repair, along with inspection of fuel system components.

Your fuel tank is leaking gasoline, even after a gasket replacement was attempted. The leak started after filling up the tank and continues to persist. The fuel tank itself may need to be replaced rather than just repairing the gasket.

You noticed a strong gasoline smell and found gas dripping from under your car. After investigating, you discovered the protective plate under the gas tank is rusting through, which suggests the gas tank itself may also be rusting and leaking. This will need inspection and likely replacement of the fuel tank and its protective shield to stop the leak and prevent further damage.

Your gas tank is leaking gasoline. This is a safety hazard that requires immediate attention, as gasoline leaks can create a fire risk and expose you to harmful fumes. The repair will likely involve inspecting the tank for cracks or corrosion and either sealing the leak or replacing the fuel tank entirely.

Filed: Nov 2015

Your car's frame has developed rust. While this hasn't caused a crash or fire, rust on the frame can weaken the structural integrity of your vehicle over time. A mechanic should inspect the extent of the rust and recommend treatment options, which may involve rust removal, sandblasting, or protective coatings.

NHTSA #: 10789948
highSTRUCTURE
Filed: Sep 2013

Your vehicle's frame has developed rust, which was confirmed by the dealer. Rust on the frame can compromise your vehicle's structural integrity and safety over time. Repairing frame rust typically involves removing the affected areas and applying rust treatment or welding in new metal sections.

Air Bags,unknown Or Other,service Brakes1 issue
criticalAIR BAGS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,SERVICE BRAKES
Filed: Mar 2017

Your Sportage has multiple serious safety issues: the airbag in the steering wheel is missing, your brakes go all the way to the floor before stopping, and the oxygen sensor for bank one is faulty. You're also experiencing popping in the tires and are concerned about frame structural integrity. These issues combined create significant safety risks, especially with children in the vehicle. A full safety inspection and repairs to the airbag system, brake system, oxygen sensor, and frame would be needed to address these concerns.

Filed: Feb 2016

Your headlights are going out, and there's a large hole in the right frame of your car. Your door locks aren't working properly, the battery keeps dying, and your seatbelts aren't functioning as they should. The radio also shuts off unexpectedly. These issues combined—especially the non-functional locks, failing seatbelts, and dead headlights—create safety concerns. Repairs will likely involve replacing the battery, headlight bulbs and wiring, inspecting and replacing seatbelt components, and potentially welding or replacing the frame section.

NHTSA #: 10838533
Suspension,structure1 issue
criticalSUSPENSION,STRUCTURE
Filed: Mar 2014

Your Sportage's structural frame is experiencing rust and rot that makes it unsafe to drive. The owner reports seeing multiple similar cases and is concerned this widespread issue hasn't been recalled.

NHTSA #: 10567644
Service Brakes1 issue
criticalSERVICE BRAKES
Filed: Jul 2013

Your brake lines have rusted through, causing brake failure. The vehicle's frame was also found to be completely rusted through in multiple places, making the vehicle unsafe to drive. The repair will require replacement of the brake lines and assessment of frame integrity, which may involve welding or frame replacement depending on the extent of damage.

CrashFiled: Jun 2013

Your windshield wipers activated on their own and ran continuously at high speed when you first started the car. About a mile later, the wipers activated again on their own, and immediately after, two airbags deployed without any collision — the passenger airbag and the lower driver-side airbag. You experienced pain in your right shin from the airbag deployment. The vehicle was on a smooth road with no impact involved, suggesting the airbags may have deployed due to an electrical malfunction rather than a crash.

FireFiled: Apr 2013

After sitting unused for 2 days, your daughter started the car and drove about a quarter to half mile when smoke began pouring from the passenger side console. Within seconds, fire erupted inside the vehicle, completely engulfing the interior and destroying the car. The fire spread so rapidly that the entire interior was gutted, with paint burned off the driver's side and roof. This suggests a possible fuel leak may have caused the fire.

criticalSTEERING,SUSPENSION,SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC,STRUCTURE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
Filed: Sep 2012

Your vehicle is experiencing severe rust damage throughout multiple critical systems. The fuel tank shield is severely corroded and barely attached, and you're smelling fuel vapors inside the cabin while the fuel tank itself shows rust damage. Your brake lines have rusted through in multiple places—one already failed and prevented the brakes from working, requiring immediate repair—and others show signs of future failure. Additionally, the power steering line has rusted and failed, causing loss of steering control while driving. The frame has heavy rust scale in several areas, and the paint is bubbling, indicating body rust underneath. Addressing this will require inspection and replacement of corroded brake lines, power steering lines, fuel tank components, and potentially structural reinforcement or replacement depending on the extent of frame damage.
