NHTSA Campaign: 19V120000
Component: ENGINE
Kia Motors America (Kia) is recalling certain 2012-2016 Kia Soul vehicles equipped with 1.6L Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) engines. High exhaust gas temperatures may damage the catalytic converter, possibly resulting in abnormal engine combustion and damage to one or more of the engine's pistons and possible piston connecting rod failure.
Risk: Piston damage may result in an engine stall, increasing the risk of a crash. A broken connecting rod may puncture the engine block allowing engine oil to escape. The leaking oil may contact the exhaust, increasing the risk of a fire.
Fix: Kia will notify owners, and dealers will upgrade the Catalytic Overheating Protection Engine Control Unit logic to prevent overheating of the catalytic converter. In addition, the catalytic converter will also be replaced if it has been damaged. Depending on the extent of any damage, the engine may also be replaced, free of charge. The recall began April 17, 2019. Owners may contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542. Kia's number for this recall is SC176.

Kia Motors America (Kia) is recalling certain model year 2010-2013 Kia Soul vehicles manufactured January 8, 2009, to October 2, 2013, equipped with a sun roof. A headliner plate may detach during deployment of the curtain air bag.
Risk: A detached headliner plate may increase the risk of injury to the occupant during a vehicle crash.
Fix: Kia will notify owners, and dealers will install industrial adhesive strips to secure the headliner plates, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin February 2, 2015. Owners may contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542. Kia's number for this recall is SC112.

Kia America, Inc. (Kia) is recalling certain 2010-2019 Borrego, 2014-2016 Cadenza, 2010-2013 Forte, Forte Koup, Sportage, 2015-2018 K900, 2011-2015 Optima, 2011-2013 Optima Hybrid, Soul, 2012-2017 Rio, 2011-2014 Sorento, and 2010-2011 Rondo vehicles. The Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit (HECU) may experience an electrical short, which can result in an engine compartment fire while parked or driving.
Risk: An engine compartment fire while parked or driving can increase the risk of injury.
Fix: Owners are advised to park outside and away from structures until the recall repair is complete. Dealers will replace the HECU fuse, free of charge. Interim notification letters, notifying owners of the safety risk, were mailed November 14, 2023. Owner notification letters were mailed March 29, 2024 through June 18, 2024. Owners may contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542. Kia's number for this recall is SC284.
Owner-Reported Issues (20 of 648)
Steering →5 issues
You've noticed a clunking sound in your steering system for several weeks. While rapidly decelerating on a highway exit ramp, your steering wheel began shaking violently—a symptom you've identified as a failed steering coupler disk that creates excessive looseness between the power steering motor and steering shaft. Kia has acknowledged this as a known safety issue in their technical service bulletin. The repair will likely involve replacing the steering coupler disk and inspecting the steering shaft and motor assembly.

Your steering wheel makes a distinct clicking sound and feels notchy when you turn it back and forth from the center position while driving straight. The dealer indicates this is caused by a worn flexible rubber steering coupler and warns that if left unfixed, it could potentially lead to loss of steering control. The repair involves replacing the steering coupler.

Your steering wheel makes a knocking noise when you turn it. Kia has issued a technical service bulletin (TSB CHA074) identifying deterioration of the MDPS flexible steering coupler as the cause, and your 2013 Soul is covered under this bulletin. While no crashes or fires have occurred, the noise is annoying and sounds concerning. The fix typically involves replacing the flexible steering coupler component.

Engine →4 issues
Your car's check engine light flashes and the engine loses significant power, entering "limp mode" that limits your speed. This happened after a dealership repair, and the same problem returned within 30 miles of pickup, creating a safety risk if it occurs while driving in traffic or through intersections. The issue is related to engine management and appears to be recurring despite professional service.

Your engine started knocking while driving and then stopped turning over completely around 140,000 miles, despite regular oil changes and maintenance. A mechanic said the engine is beyond repair. You believe this is a known defect in Kia's GDI engines that the company has acknowledged in recalls and settlements for other model years, but Kia denied your vehicle coverage based on your VIN and model year, even though you're not the original owner. Fixing this will likely require a complete engine replacement or teardown diagnosis.

While driving, your engine started smoking and you had to pull over. A repair shop found a hole in your engine block and a broken connecting rod. Kia denied warranty coverage, stating you didn't qualify for a class action settlement because a previous owner missed a recall KSDS update that you were never notified about. The repair will likely involve engine block replacement or major engine rebuild depending on the extent of the damage.

Your engine is making a knocking or pinging sound, likely caused by low-quality fuel or engine carbon buildup. This can indicate the engine is working harder than it should and may get worse over time. A mechanic will typically need to inspect the engine and may recommend using higher-octane fuel or cleaning the fuel injectors and intake valves.

While driving at 60 mph, your son heard an abnormal noise from under the vehicle and then saw flames coming from underneath. A connecting rod bearing detached, went through the engine, and created a hole that caused the fire. The dealer confirmed the engine damage but Kia refused to authorize repairs or provide assistance. The engine will need to be replaced or the vehicle rebuilt, which is a major repair.

Electrical System,engine,fuel/propulsion System →1 issue
Your car suddenly started running rough and wouldn't go past 30 RPM out of nowhere, despite regular maintenance. A mechanic diagnosed that cylinders 2 and 4 aren't getting power, possibly due to a faulty spark plug or piston issue. Getting the engine inspected and repaired by a certified technician will be needed to restore proper cylinder function.

While driving on the highway, your driver's side window suddenly exploded with a loud pop, shattering into small pieces and leaving a large hole with glass chunks still hanging in the frame. You were able to drive to safety and remove the remaining glass, but the sudden failure created a safety hazard. The owner reports this is a widespread issue affecting multiple Kias and may require window regulator or glass replacement.

Vehicle Speed Control →1 issue
Your 2013 Kia Soul is shutting off while parked and losing power when driving—it moves much slower than normal and won't reach typical speeds. The RPM gauge has stopped working, and your cruise control no longer functions. A Kia dealer charged you over $2,000 but couldn't complete the repair due to missing parts. The issue likely involves diagnosing why the engine is losing power and why the cruise control system has failed, which may require engine control module testing, throttle position sensor replacement, or cruise control system repairs.
