NHTSA Campaign: 22V202000

Component: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:ENGINE:GASOLINE:TURBO/SUPERCHARGER

Kia Motor America (Kia) is recalling certain 2022 Sorento vehicles. The oil supply pipe to the turbocharger may crack, which could result in an oil leak in the engine compartment.

Risk: An oil leak in the presence of an ignition source such as hot engine or exhaust components, can increase the risk of a fire.

Fix: Dealers will replace the turbocharger oil supply pipe, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed April 22, 2022. Owners may contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542. Kia's number for this recall is SC233.

As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 110, "Tire Selection and Rims."

Risk: Impaired anti-lock braking or traction control systems can increase the risk of a crash.

Fix: Dealers will inspect and replace the spare tire, as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed July 27, 2022. Owners may contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542. Kia's number for this recall is SC244.

NHTSA Campaign: 22V703000

Component: TRAILER HITCHES

Kia America, Inc. (Kia) is recalling certain 2016-2022 Sorento, 2021-2022 Sorento Hybrid (HEV), 2022-2023 Sorento Plug-In Hybrid (PHEV), and 2017-2022 Sportage vehicles equipped with a tow hitch harness installed as original equipment, or purchased as an accessory through a Kia dealership. Debris and moisture accumulation on the tow hitch harness module printed circuit board (PCB) may cause an electrical short, which can result in a fire.

Risk: A fire while parked or driving can increase the risk of injury.

Fix: Owners are advised to park outside and away from structures until the recall repair is complete. Dealers will inspect the vehicle, and, as necessary, replace the fuse and/or tow hitch harness module, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed August 11, 2023. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 111, "Rear Visibility."

Risk: A rearview camera that does not properly display an image can reduce the driver's rear view, increasing the risk of a crash.

Your car has experienced sudden loss of acceleration while driving on multiple occasions—first in July 2023 and again in December 2025—leaving you unable to keep up with traffic or accelerate on hills. These incidents created dangerous situations where other vehicles nearly hit you because you couldn't propel the car normally. Despite a dealership repair and electrical recall in 2023, the problem has returned, and the dealership hasn't been able to identify the cause even with diagnostic testing.

Your vehicle has an open recall for a potential fire hazard, but no fix is currently available. This is concerning given cold weather conditions when you need to use your heater. You should contact your Kia dealer to inquire about the status of this recall and when a repair solution will be available.

Your air conditioning system has stopped working because of a leak in the evaporator core, which has been confirmed by two mechanics including your Kia dealership. The evaporator core appears to have been manufactured with thin metal that developed small pinhole leaks. In hot Texas weather, this leaves you and your children without cooling, which poses a safety risk. Fixing this will likely require replacing the evaporator core.

Your panoramic sunroof spontaneously shattered while the vehicle was parked, making a loud noise like a gunshot. Kia has acknowledged this is a known issue, but the dealer initially falsified service paperwork instead of actually inspecting the damage. After the paperwork was corrected, Kia refused to examine the sunroof again. The glass failed without any warning.

Your Kia Sorento's exterior trim is fading prematurely, and this problem appears to affect multiple 2020-2022 Nightfall Edition vehicles. When dealers replace the trim, it fades again within about a year, suggesting the replacement uses the same defective material. Kia has declined to issue a recall and has given conflicting explanations about the cause, leaving owners to pay for repairs out of pocket.

Your 2022 Sorento lost all engine power while you were driving, creating a dangerous situation. After inspection, Kia determined you need a complete engine replacement at a cost of $8,000+, and your extended warranty won't cover it. Kia has existing recalls for similar power loss issues on this model. The repair will require removing and replacing the entire engine.

Your vehicle is subject to a safety recall due to a potential fire hazard that could occur during normal driving. Kia has declined to repurchase your vehicle despite it being inoperable. The issue involves the electrical, engine, and fuel systems and will likely require diagnostic inspection and component replacement or repair as part of the recall service.

Power Train2 issues
criticalPOWER TRAIN
Filed: Jan 2026

Your 2022 Kia Sorento Hybrid's EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) control unit has an internal short circuit, with engine oil leaking into it — a sign that oil is escaping from the engine where it shouldn't be. This can cause unpredictable engine performance, loss of power, or sudden stalling while driving, which creates a serious safety risk, especially on highways. The repair will likely involve diagnosing and fixing the source of the oil leak (possibly the PCV system or turbocharger seals) and replacing the damaged EGR unit.

Your 2022 Kia Sorento may fail to accelerate when you press the gas pedal, even after restarting the engine. A mechanic diagnosed this as a transmission defect and found there's a known recall (Campaign 22V760000) for this issue on your model, but your specific vehicle wasn't included in the recall according to dealers and Kia. The problem occurred around 55,000 miles and has not been repaired. Fixing this will likely require transmission service or replacement by a Kia dealer.

Your instrument panel screen goes blank while driving, and the check engine light comes on—sometimes repeatedly. The dealer found a faulty battery sensor and says it needs replacement, but hasn't repaired it yet and wants to run additional diagnostics on the instrument panel itself. Your 2022 Kia Sorento has had multiple airbags removed and wiring deliberately tampered with to hide the problem from your dashboard warning light. Specifically, the driver's knee airbag and A-pillar airbag are missing, wiring harnesses were cut, and electrical resistors were installed to prevent fault detection. The vehicle was previously in a crash that deployed airbags, but they were never replaced before you bought it. Fixing this safety issue will require replacing missing airbags, restoring proper wiring, and removing the bypass resistors.

Filed: Jan 2026

Your electronic power steering (EPS) warning light started flashing intermittently in August 2025, and shortly after, your power steering began cutting out randomly while driving—sometimes even during turns. The problem has gotten worse over time, and you've had two near-accidents with your children in the car due to sudden loss of power steering. Your Kia dealership has been unable to resolve the issue despite multiple visits while the vehicle is still under warranty.

Your 2022 Sorento displayed a "Check Transmission" warning message while driving through traffic, then suddenly lost power and wouldn't shift gears properly in a busy intersection. You couldn't accelerate or change gears, leaving you stranded in traffic and at risk of being hit by other vehicles. This issue likely involves the transmission or its control module and may require transmission repair or replacement.

Your sunroof suddenly shattered and exploded while you were driving, with no warning or impact to the vehicle. No one was injured in the incident. highSUSPENSION,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
Filed: Feb 2026

While driving at about 70 MPH, your vehicle experienced a severe shaking or wobbling sensation (known as death wobble) and unexpectedly accelerated on its own — neither issue triggered a warning light. You took the vehicle to the dealer, but they couldn't reproduce the problem to diagnose it, so no repair was made. The manufacturer has been notified of the issue. Addressing this will likely require a thorough inspection of your suspension components and throttle control system to identify the root cause.
