NHTSA Campaign: 12V014000

Component: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL

KIA MOTORS AMERICA, INC. (KIA) IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2006-2008 KIA OPTIMA VEHICLES MANUFACTURED FROM SEPTEMBER 29, 2005, THROUGH JANUARY 29, 2008, AND MODEL YEAR 2007 AND 2008 KIA RONDO VEHICLES MANUFACTURED FROM SEPTEMBER 13, 2006, THROUGH MARCH 21, 2008. THE CLOCK SPRING CONTACT ASSEMBLY FOR THE DRIVER'S SIDE AIR BAG SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM (SRS) MAY BECOME DAMAGED THROUGH USAGE OVER TIME. IF THE CLOCK SPRING CONTACT ASSEMBLY BECOMES DAMAGED, THE DRIVER'S AIR BAG ELECTRICAL CIRCUIT WILL EXPERIENCE A HIGH RESISTANCE CONDITION POTENTIALLY CAUSING THE DRIVER'S AIR BAG TO NOT DEPLOY.

Risk: IF THE CLOCK SPRING DEVELOPS HIGH RESISTANCE, IN THE EVENT OF A CRASH, THE DRIVERS AIR BAG WILL NOT DEPLOY AND WILL NOT BE ABLE TO PROPERLY PROTECT THE DRIVER, INCREASING THE RISK OF INJURIES.

Fix: KIA WILL NOTIFY OWNERS, AND DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE VEHICLE'S AIR BAG CLOCK SPRING CONTACT ASSEMBLY, FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON JULY 11, 2012. OWNERS MAY CONTACT KIA CUSTOMER ASSISTANCE CENTER AT 1-800-333-4542.

NHTSA Campaign: 11V153000

Component: POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION:LEVER AND LINKAGE:COLUMN SHIFT

KIA IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2006-2008 OPTIMA VEHICLES MANUFACTURED FROM SEPTEMBER 29, 2005, THROUGH JUNE 13, 2007. THERE IS A POSSIBILITY THAT THE SHIFT CABLE MAY HAVE BEEN INSTALLED INCORRECTLY, CAUSING TENSION IN THE CABLE. IF PRESENT, THIS CONDITION COULD CAUSE THE CABLE TO DETACH FROM THE SHIFTER ASSEMBLY'S DOWEL PIN PREVENTING THE TRANSMISSION FROM BEING SHIFTED. THE SHIFT LEVER CAN THEN BE MOVED INTO THE PARK (P) POSITION WHILE THE VEHICLE'S TRANSMISSION IS STILL IN THE LAST USED GEAR BEFORE DETACHMENT.

Risk: IF THE DRIVER LEAVES THE VEHICLE WITHOUT ENGAGING THE PARKING BRAKE, THERE IS A POSSIBILITY THAT THE VEHICLE CAN ROLL INJURE A PERSON IN ITS PATH OR CAUSE A CRASH.

Fix: DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE SHIFT CABLE AND REINSTALL IF NECESSARY FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON MARCH 23, 2011. OWNER MAY CONTACT KIA AT 1-800-333-4542.

Your car's automatic door locks are malfunctioning—when you try to unlock the doors, they immediately lock again, trapping you inside the vehicle. This happens repeatedly each time you attempt to unlock them. The fix will likely involve diagnosing and repairing the door lock actuators or the central locking system control module.

Your front subframe has developed significant rust that the owner describes as dangerous. This is reportedly the same issue that affected other Optimas in a previous recall. You should have this inspected by a mechanic to assess whether the rust is compromising the structural integrity of your vehicle.

Filed: May 2018

Your instrument panel has stopped working completely — the speedometer, temperature gauge, RPM gauge, and fuel gauge are all not displaying. You've already checked the fuses, so the issue likely involves the instrument cluster itself or its wiring connections. A mechanic will need to diagnose whether the cluster needs repair or replacement, or if there's a wiring issue behind the dashboard.

Your car's clutch has required the same repair three times since you bought it new from the Kia dealership, suggesting a potential defect with the transmission system. This recurring issue indicates the problem may not have been fully resolved with previous repairs. The transmission may need to be inspected or replaced to prevent future failures.

Your driver's side airbag warning light is on and won't turn off. You found that there's a recall for this issue on 2006 Kia Optimas, but your dealership says your car isn't covered by it—even though you believe many other 2006 Optimas have the same problem. The fix will likely involve either replacing the airbag module or addressing whatever component is triggering the warning light.

A mechanic initially diagnosed it as a faulty seat sensor and recommended replacement, so you had a different seat installed, but the light remained on. This is now preventing you from passing vehicle inspection.

Your driver's side door is stuck and won't open from inside or outside the car, even when unlocked. This has happened before, and the problem seems to return after the door is locked. You're concerned this could be dangerous in an emergency, especially for elderly or mobility-limited drivers who need to exit quickly. The fix will likely involve replacing the door latch mechanism and/or the door lock actuator.

Your gear shifter is stuck and won't move out of Park, even though it appears to shift. When you try to back up, the car won't go into Reverse and the dashboard shows the shifter is still in Park. The dealer suspects a transmission issue but hasn't diagnosed or repaired it yet. This problem may require transmission repair or replacement of the shifter mechanism.

Your car won't shift into Park or Reverse, and your key is stuck in the ignition. You've identified that Kia issued a recall for this issue, but when you took your car to a Kia dealership, they said your VIN wasn't on the recall list. The problem occurred while your car was stationary, leaving you unable to back up or shift into Park. You may need to contact Kia directly to confirm whether your specific vehicle qualifies for the recall, or seek a second opinion from another Kia dealer or independent transmission specialist.

Filed: Sep 2019

Your hood latch failed while driving at 50 mph on a two-lane highway, causing the hood to fly open and completely block your windshield and vision. The hood release mechanism apparently opened without any warning or identifiable cause. The hood latch or release mechanism may need to be inspected, repaired, or replaced to prevent this from happening again.

criticalSUSPENSION,WHEELS
Filed: May 2019

Your car's rear lower suspension arm broke due to rust, which allowed the spring to come out of position and caused the wheel to tilt severely. This happened because the metal arm rusted through and split in two. The fix will involve replacing the rusted lower control arm and possibly inspecting the spring and related suspension components.

Filed: Oct 2018

Your engine stalls unexpectedly and without warning—it can happen while driving on the highway at 65 mph. After it stalls, the engine may start and stall several times before running normally again. You've had the wiring harness checked and multiple sensors replaced, but the problem continues. This appears to be a widespread issue affecting multiple Kia model years.

Vehicle Speed Control, unknown Or Other,engine1 issue
criticalVEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
Filed: Sep 2016

Your car experienced sudden, unintended acceleration on two separate occasions while merging onto the highway. The first time, your speed jumped from 40 mph to 60 mph without you pressing the accelerator, and braking didn't slow it down; the second time, the car stuck at 40 mph and wouldn't respond normally to braking. In both cases, turning the ignition key off and back on helped regain control. A mechanic performed diagnostics with an engine analyzer but couldn't reproduce the problem during testing. This issue may require a thorough inspection of the throttle control system, fuel injection system, or engine computer to identify and fix the cause of the unintended acceleration.

CrashFiled: Jun 2016

Your car unexpectedly accelerated backward at high speed while leaving the garage, crossed the street, and hit your neighbor's house, damaging electrical equipment and creating a hazard with live wires. You were instructed to stay in the vehicle until firefighters and the power company could safely shut down the electrical lines. This represents a serious loss of vehicle control that resulted in a crash.

Your car sometimes won't start, and you hear a clicking sound with dashboard lights flashing when you try. You may need to wait 24 hours before the car will start again. Even after replacing the alternator and battery, the problem persists. This issue may involve the starter motor, battery cables, or an underlying electrical system problem that needs diagnostic testing.
