2018 Jeep Wrangler Steering Problems

On multiple, though infrequent occasions, while beginning a turn in our 2018 Jeep Wrangler JL, the steering wheel, abruptly and without warning, stops turning. The turn cannot be completed without exerting significant force on the wheel to overcome the resistance.

At speeds around 50 MPH the steering wheel will "lock up" and become extremely difficult to steer if not impossible. Lowering speed to 28 MPH will suddenly jolt the steering back to normal causing extremely dangerous steering response with a danger of over correcting once steering assist is regained. Dealer has not been able to replicate the issue and cannot find anything wrong with the vehicle.

Problem Description (very important): My 2018 Jeep Wrangler experiences a severe and violent front-end shaking commonly referred to as “death wobble.” This occurs while driving at highway speeds and makes the vehicle difficult to control until I slow down significantly. The shaking feels dangerous and unpredictable and creates a serious safety risk.

It states that our vehicle is not on the recall list for death wobble, however, when we go over a bump or over 60 MPH our Jeep vibrates and shakes (feeling it in the steering). We took to have tires checked, even rebalanced and they checked stems.

The primary component that failed is the brake caliper, which caused a dragging brake, overheating, and visible smoke after a brake pad replacement. This is a defect in a critical safety system, not routine wear and tear.

On [XXX] while driving my 2018 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sport (VIN: [XXX] ), the braking system failed without warning while I was approaching a stop sign on a residential road. I pressed the brake pedal and felt extreme resistance and grinding, followed by a near-total lack of braking power. I was forced to abruptly swerve into an open driveway to avoid a collision.

This defect causes violent front-end shaking at highway speeds when hitting bumps or making minor steering corrections. The issue began during the first week of ownership and has persisted through five separate service visits. Repairs have included steering damper replacements, track bar, alignments, and balancing, but the issue continues to return.

The steering gear box on my Jeep Wrangler has an active technical service bulletin regarding the faulty alluminum steering gear box causing wandering in the steering of the vehicle on all 2018-2020 Jeep Wranglers. This repair is a known issue by FCA as they have a service bulletin regarding the issue.

I was driving about 65 MPH and was turning with the road and my Jeep started to shake violently. I just about lost control of the vehicle. I pulled over on the Interstate to check and see if I had a flat on a front tire or if the wheel was falling off of the Jeep.

I have read a lot about the "Death Wobble." It appears there has been no recall on this but I believe there have been many incidents. It is the death wobble. I took the car in once. My cars started violently shaking when I would hit 58 Miles per hour and curve to the left, or the right and shakes so uncontrollably that I would have to tap the brakes but not too hard.

My vehicle will randomly have the check engine light come on, a service shifter light come on, and then lose the ability to steer. I have taken it to the dealership twice and told it was fixed. Now it is back at the dealership for the third time.

When driving a low speed, if the vehicle hits a bump, it will start bouncing and the steering wheel shakes too much until I stop and then everything comes back to normal.

Upon driving a freeway a few days ago, the vehicle went into a violent vibration/shacking motion,AKA "Death Wobble" that required immediate and dangerous driver action to keep from having a high speed (within legal limits) accident. there was a recall for death wobble on steering, took it in, supposedly fixed. a month went by and wobble came back, took back to jeep, they said I needed new tires. (of course warranty was just getting ready to expire.) bought new tires, death wobble is getting worse and worse.

Several electrical issues, vehicle issues tying back to the CAN BUSS. The vehicle throws several codes and several components quit working. I lost powering steering at 80 M.P.H and had to fight the vehicle not to wreck out.

my vehicle has extremely bad death wobble, only 55 thousand miles on it. its a extreme safty hazard ! I just had my tires rotated and balanced and the problem is not any better !

Driving Jeep Wrangler Unlimited at posted speed of 65 MPH when I hit a rough spot in the road or a seam in the pavement, or a pothole the front wheels jerk back and forth violently until I slow down to 30 MPH or less and then continue driving.

It's been characterized as the "death wobble." When I approach speeds of 60 MPH or more and hit a bump in the road, the steering and front end commences to severely vibrate uncontrollably, lasting up to several seconds. This problem is well documented and pervasive. There needs to be a nationwide recall before there are resulting accidents and fatalities.

Unknown-APPARENTLY THIS IS AN ON GOING WRANGLER ISSUE BUT WAS NEVER recalled AND I SEE NO COMMENTS. I see all over the forums that this is a problem and it is driving me insane coming from the left front wheel well area not only during breaking, but both breaking and slowing down no foot on gas or break. There is a very large, creaking, loud, creaking noise, coming out of that area.

I was driving my Jeep Rubicon 2 door with manual transmission 32,000 miles out of town which I don’t normally don’t due because the steering is sloppy. I have spoken with Jeep Cares about the issue multiple times it’s been this way since I got it with 14,000 miles. It feels dangerous to bring it up to 65mph.

Power steering has been locking up at higher speeds above 40 MPH. When slowing down to 30 MPH the power steering operates again. You can feel the steering tighten up while driving and makes very difficult to change lanes, much less do a full turn.

About a year ago, Lafontaine Jeep in Lansing MI replaced the steering stabilizer as part of the recall. The problem is occurring again.

This vehicle is not safe due to the "death wobble". My 2018 Jeep Wrangler with only 36,000 miles has become unsafe to drive. Anytime it's driven over 30 MPH there is an almost uncontrollable, violent shaking that occurs.

Steering Dampening system keeps failing causing the known effect called the "Death Wobble" as the Jeep Wrangler will violently shake at certain speeds or after hitting a bump int he road. This Jeep has the notorious “Death Wobble”. It has been inspected numerous times, there was a recall on a part ~May be a sway bar or a stabilizer bar etc- that did absolutely nothing to fix it. I’ve had the entire suspension replaced and it still does it constantly when driving over bumps in the road -specifically when the front right tire goes over a bump, around the 30+ MPH.

Going over a bridge at 55mph my vehicle went into a vigorous shaking in the front end making it uncontrollable to steer. I had to decrease speed right away to avoid going into another vehicle or the side of the bridge. While driving at 30 MPH, on occasion the vehicle would start to shake and the only resolution is to stop the vehicle, and then restart. On the freeway, I nearly lost control of the vehicle during one of these incidents. I had to stop the vehicle on the freeway and a lane change was not viable.

My Jeep has been having electrical problems many warnings across the dash including lost communication with ABS module this has been going on for about a month sometimes the fault won’t let the Jeep go into gear I brought it to the local dealership they had it for the entire day and was told they can’t find anything and that it would actually have to be happening for them to figure it out yesterday I was driving with my kids in the Jeep and the electrical want crazy and then I lost total steering while doing 55 miles per hour After my heart went through my chest I was able to get the vehicle stopped so according to my Jeep dealer I need to be in a near death crash in order for them to figure out the problem I wonder if any unexplained deaths involving newer Jeep Wrangler could be attributed to these electrical issues

On multiple occasions this Jeep has a tendency to wander into the adjacent lane, especially on curves. It is slow to respond to steering corrections when this happens. Any driving of the vehicle requires constant steering corrections to keep it in a straight line At highway speeds a small bump in the road causes the Jeep to wander into the next lane or to start to fishtail.

The steering wheel is loose/has too much play. The Jeep wanders when holding the wheel straight. When driving, turning the wheel 2-3 inches in either direction produced not movement at all in my tires.

Steering wheel seems to ( tighten up when going around a curve went right ) this has happened off n on from time to time…. I'm describing this is a steering problem, but it may easily include suspension as well. I've experienced the so-called death wobble several times since buying this Jeep. I had chalked it up as being part of having 4WD (though operating in 2WD), but I never had this problem with a much older Jeep, and it doesn't seem like it should be acceptable.

2018 JLU - Sport While driving at any speed over 40 MPH, when trying to turn with the road, the steering wheel locks up and will not allow me to turn it. This has almost caused me to crash into other vehicles and/or structures as I can not maintain my lane, with my *child* in the vehicle. Colder weather seems to make this worse.

My Jeep has began to shake violently on two recent occasions 11/18 and 11/23 at highway speeds. I tracked back to see if something was in the road, but all I found was a small imperfection about 1 inch tall in the road seam. In July 2021 our 19 year old daughter was driving our 2018 Rubicon on a trip 2 hours or so from home when all of the dash warning lights came on speedometer was lost . Panicked she asked us what to do? We told her to take it to the closest Jeep dealership (Ladd-Hanford DCJR) to see if the vehicle was safe to drive.

Experianced a death wobble at 50mph on I-25 which caused 100% loss of control of steering almost hitting center barrier. Took to autonation broadway (littleton co), while driving to dealership experienced a deathwobble at 40-45 MPH. Dealership has had vehicle for almost 3 months, no loaner or other help has been provided.

Jeep went into autonation broadway in littleton colorado on january 8th 2021. The vehicle has been there unrepaired since due to a recall for a death wobble which caused loss of control of vehicle on highway causing me to almost hit the center jersey barrier.. However, when looking at the VIN on NHTSA recall check it shows the recall has been completed and there are no open recalls.

Car has been in shop multiple times with multiple parts replacements to correct jeep death wobble. Steering wheel shakes violently and driver loses control of steering when car hits bumps going over 55 MPH. Replacement of steering dampner and track bar have only been temporary fixes and then problem starts all over again.

At 11k miles the jeep began going into a death wobble when driving over something as simple as a hot top patch on the highway at appx 60 - 65mph. Happens on a weekly basis now and can only be stopped by braking significantly.

On hundreds of occasions the last three years of ownership, I have had serious steering problems with death wobble, steering wander, and locked-up steering. Dealers have performed warranty work on the track bar and steering stabilizer in the past. However, these remedies have not corrected my issues.

While driving approximately 40 MPH through a double curve on a city street the steering locked up on my 2018 jeep wranlger. A steering error, check engine light, traction control and ABS light all came on. The vehicle had to be towed back to the dealer.

The sterring on this vehicle is uncontrollable. I research this issues and found many other owner of this vehicle have the same issues. I believe this vehicle has a recall on the steering box and is currently being replace.

While driving the jeep down country roads or city highways the steering is all over the place. I'm constantly correcting the steering to try to keep it straight down the road, it is a workout just driving anywhere. It is very unsafe to drive especially on narrow country roads with oncoming traffic with the fear of crashing into them!

Every time I drive on the highway over 45 MPH I have to play with the steering wheel back and forth around 1 inch because if I don't do that my wrangler pulls to left or right moving out the lane, I have informed that at dealership when I take my wrangler for service and they replaced the steering damper back in september 2019, but the issue still not fixed.

Recently purchased a certified pre owned wrangler 2018jlur under 25k miles and less than 2k miles from purchase. Checked out steering and was loose noticed wonder at from 20mph to over 65mph. Over 65mph steering is very loose and unsafe, was in a construction corridor on highway and due to how loose steering and wandering was it could easily lead to a crash and fatality.

When driving down the road the steering seems lose and the car wonders on the road. The stabilizer has been replaced but the steering itself is loose. I just got an alignment and the problem still happens.

Just purchased this vehicle and picked up on 2/14/20 and have experienced violent "death wobble". Called the dealership and they said it was from my lift that I just had installed. After a re-check, the place that did the lift stated there was nothing wrong with the lift.

The morning of feb 6, 2020, I was driving my 2018 jl (approx 16k mileage) on the highway at ~65 MPH when the steering all of a sudden locked up going into a right bend in the highway. Suddenly I was unable to turn the vehicle to the right to stay in the middle lane and ended halfway in the left fast lane headed straight for the concrete highway median barriers.

My daughter drives that jeep and had the steering lock up on the highway in houston on the morning of january 29 2020 and could not steer left(change lane) for about a mile,then went back to normal...it was taken the next day to helfman dealer,with said problem was solved...they updated electronics witch I believe the problem is a mechanical issue in the steering box.there was no accident involved.I found online several similar issues and videos related to the same problem.I believe its just a matter of time before it happens again hopefully without an accident involved.

My jeep started to shake violently after driving over some small bumps on the highway while driving 60-65 MPH. I had to pull my car over. I thought I blew a tire, but I did not.

Rapid jarring and shaking of steering wheel occurred when driving speeds of 65 -70 MPH encountered an expansion crack the violent shaking of the jeep caused me to have to pull off the road to avoid a collision. My vehicle failed to brake and steering wheel was not responding either causing me to crash into a vehicle parked in front of me there is video surveillance that will show how long I was trying to control this vehicle and was not able too I took it to a jeep dealer and they state that nothing was wrong there are multiple forums this happen at a mall around the holiday season I could of killed someone im trying to save a life something went wrong and is happening to others yet jeep fails to check further into it on saturday my jeep had still not been checked now at 10am I received a called telling me that nothing was wrong with the car so fast the dealer opens at 9am it took you less than an hour to tell me nothing is wrong with the car?

I recently had a local jeep dealer install a mopar factory 2" lift kit on my 2018 jeep wrangler rubicon a few weeks ago. Since the 2" lift was installed, when the jeep hits a highway break, bump/pothole, anywhere between 30mph up to normal highway speeds, I get the "death wobble" in the steering wheel and the vehicle shakes violently.

While driving the posted speed limits, on any street, I am constantly fighting with the steering wheel jerks out of my hands, even though I had several professionals look at my tires, wheels, suspension components, tie rods, stabilizer bar, steering dampener, ball joints, etc. My jeep has this massive death wabble, where I constantly have to fight the steering wheel!

Had a recall on the steering damper. Had the recall serviced a week ago. Going 60mph on highway and hit uneven road surface the steering shimmies excessively almost causing a crash.

I was driving on highway about 65mph, the highway was curving to left on ramp but I could not turn my steeringwheel because it was too stiff. I did not do any suspension upgrades for this car. It was more than stiff.

THE VIN WAS UNKNOWN. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 56,000.

Steering is loose and unresponsive ,jeep wonders into lanes on highways, hard to keep straight, constant steering wheel input needed to maintain a straight line at highway speeds, after hitting some pumps at highway speeds the front wheels shake and the steering wheel occilates , in some case vilantly causeing temporarily lose in control of jeep.

At highway speeds (60+ MPH), the entire steering column and jeep shakes after I pass over a bridge. The only way to come out of the shake is to lower my speed down to about 40 MPH which is unsafe when in heavy traffic. The first time it happened (~10,000 miles on my new jeep) with intensity, I would have lost control of my vehicle if I did not have both hands on the wheel.

Death wobble in my brand new 2018 jeep wrangler jl sahara unl. Bought brand new, now have about just under 7k and getting the "death wobble". Here's an explanation of the death wobble...

While driving at high rates of speed and hit a bump in the road the vehicle will start to shake uncontrollably. At that point I'm required to slow the vehicle down to approximately 30 to 40 miles an hour before it will subside. This is happened to me numerous times on the highway.

Steering locked up at above 60 miles an hour 3 times and has almost caused me an accident all 3 times. Once almost hitting the side of the freeway and 2 other cars when it locked on an overpass going left. I couldn't straighten it and invaded the next lane.

In one instance, when driving at speeds above 60 miles per hour on the highway, the power steering either failed or something within the steering system locked up. Decelerating below 40 miles per hour releases the steering and you can steer the vehicle properly again. In another instance, driving 45 miles per hour on city streets, the same lock up occurred.

There was already a recall on the steering box. I had it replaced with the part numbers ending in ( ad ). That was the prescribed pics from the dealer.

My problem has been happening since mid-november. The problems is that at highway speeds if I hit a bridge joist or a seam in the highway, the steering wheel shakes violently back and forth and I have to slow down. The dealer and jeep have said it was the steering stabilizer, but I've had two replacements and the same thing continues to happen.

I bought this wrangler jl model new this past summer. Since that time I have experienced 3 separate occasions where the front end shakes uncontrollably with the steering wheel shaking back and forth. This occurred once on a multiple lane road traveling approximately 45mph and once on a highway traveling approximately 70mph.

Around 10,000 miles the 'death wobble' started. It happens almost daily. When driving on the highway between speeds of 55-75 the front end and steering wheel will violently shake.

I have approximately 6,000 miles on my brand new 2018 jl wrangler rubicon that has the mopar factory 2" lift, installed by the dealer. The mopar lift was installed appropriately, but yet the springs are curved, bent, and not straight. Chrysler put out a statement that this is normal, as basically all mopar lift installed on the new jl wrangler has bent springs.

It's a cause and effect because of the unresponsiveness of the steering, so you overcorrect causing you to go side to side in the lane.

The jeep lost power while I was driving. The lights stayed on but jeep came to a stop. I touched the key area and it started running again.

The check engine light came on in my car. I was waiting for the dealer to call me to fix it for the 3rd time. I was on my way home when every electrical option on the vehicle turned on- wipers, lights, dash lights, brake- which caused the car to brake- then it turned off and I had no brakes, the car had no steering, it accelerated and I went off the road.

While operating the vehicle, I lost Power Steering, Stability Control, Anti-Lock Brakes and when I was able to stop, the transmission was put into park and I was unable to shift gears. Dealership informed me that this is a known issue related to the Can Bus Connector located behind the glove compartment, which apparently controls all of the safety systems.

The jeep will automatically go into park will lock the shifter in park every light on dash will come on You will also lose power steering it will say service shifter service stability control ABS light comes on check engine light comes on error lights will come on and you can no longer move the jeep until you cut it on and off multiple times before it fixes itself have took it to a local jeep dealer and they claim nothing is wrong but you can clearly see all the lights on the dash no power steering and you cannot shift it out of park this happened to us going to get dinner and we were stuck for about two hours before the jeep decided it was ready to go again That was the first time that it had happened Now it will do it daily but we have to drive it because we need means of transportation back-and-forth to work can you please report this as a major issue thank you

vehicle dash goes crazy. all warning lights come on. gauges act erratic.

I was driving to work at approximately 7:50 am when the outside ambient temperature was below freezing (approximately 30 degrees Fahrenheit). The vehicle was operating normally until I came to a long, sweeping, and gradual curve on a road that I take every day to get to work.

Steering locked up momentarily at 62 MPH during cold weather ( 38 degrees ) driving.

While driving on the freeway my steering locked up and I almost hit the concrete median. It is happing at high and low speeds. Take to the dealership and I am always told nothing is wrong with the vehicle.

Twice now the steering wheel has locked up on my jeep and made it hard to steer. Both times jeep was driving and than turning and whilst turning steering locked up and it became difficult to turn.

More than once I have experienced extreme shaking of the steering wheel and vehicle. It happens when I am on the highway and hit a bump. Each time it has happened I tense up for fear of losing control.

After owning the vehicle, which I bought used with 8113 miles on it, for only four days, I experienced a violent vibration from the steering mechanism, forcing me to slow down and pull to the side of the road. I thought I'd blown a tire, but the monitor showed them to be properly inflated. Once I slowed down, the shaking disappeared and I was able to continue without incident.

When vehicle is above 60 MPH and the temp is 35 or below there is no steering assist. Its as if the vehicle has no power steering, took to dealership and they claimed nothing was wrong with the jeep.

My steering is loose at highway speeds even after the dampener recall and new trac bar were installed. It is dangerous on the highway even with a small amount of wind.

Traveling straight at 72mph (cruise set) on interstate 69 crossed a slightly rough bridge expansion joint. Vehicle started to violently shake. Severe steering wheel oscillation.

Excess play in steering when driving straight (at all speeds) as well as steering drifts or wanders while driving straight. No issues while in a turn. No problem while holding a steady turn on a freeway off ramp.

Wandering and loose steering issue persist. Steering wandering first wheel alignment was off and it had to be redone. Problem still occurred than was informed that wranglers aren't meant to go highway speeds.

My jeep began wobbling a few months after I purchased it last july 2018.wobbling has only occurred while driving on the highway. They did a computer update last year that was suppose to fix the problem but on 10/5/19 my jeep began to wobble uncontrollably any time I reached 50 or above.

Unsettling wobble ,shake at highway speeds while changing lanes and hitting a bump , 2 different steering dampers installed ,problem still exist , dealership is in denial . I'm a certified master mechanic ,this vehicle is unsafe , I believe chrysler knows this , according to reports ,no one has died yet ,but someone is going too

Over 50 MPH very difficult to keep in lane -- wandering issue + dead zone in steering. Had to install aftermarket parts to help correct wandering to be able to drive it on the highway. Better now but still had dead zone "slop" in steering wheel.

Steering has play in steering wheel - you can move the steering wheel from left to right about 1 inch and it does not turn the wheels. This problem was about 2 inches when I bought the vehicle but a replacement trackbar installed under warranty has reduced the play but it still has about 1" where is is not affecting steering.

My 2018 jl wrangler has a significant "dead band" in the center of the steering. The steering wheel can be turned side to side with no change in wheel direction both while stationary and moving. This necessitates exagurated inputs to keep the vehicle in the middle of the lane and makes maintaining a straight line difficult.

While stepping on the brakes, the service shifter light comes on, power steering goes out, then the dashboard goes crazy with all sorts of warnings blinking and dinging: sway bar, stability control, blind spot alert, auto park, etc. Temp goes up and down, speedometer goes crazy. When the vehicle is shut off and re-started, it usually starts as normal.

I was driving at 45 miles per hour when my service shifter light went off. Within 1 minute I lost my power steering, and brakes. My car locked into gear and I lost all ability to accelerate.

Steering locked-up while driving - steering wheel would not turn to the left past approximately 11:00 going approximately 45-50 MPH. Steering returned when speed dropped below approximately 40 MPH but continued to freeze and free for approximately the next 0.5 mile traveling at approximately 45 MPH.

Going around a gradual left turn at 40-50 MPH, steering locked up and was unable to turn at all, not matter how much effort.
