The contact stated that he was an independent mechanic that diagnosed a faulty fuel check valve in the filler neck. The contact stated that the filler neck needed to be replaced; however, the vehicle was not repaired because the dealer and the manufacturer would not sell the contact the part since the vehicle was not included in a TSB or recall. The contact related the failure to NHTSA ID Number: 10037960 (Fuel System, Gasoline). The manufacturer was notified of the failure however, no assistance was offered. The approximate failure mileage was 125,000.

The consumer stated the fuel skid plate is the only the piece holding the fuel tank in the vehicle.

When trying to fill up with gas, the automatic shut off on the nozzle will go off, to the point where when trying to fill up you end up spilling gas on yourself or out of the car, happens every time, all the time and is a known issue for Jeep Jk's. A recall was posted for two of the eleven years. When I spoke to the dealer, they wanted to do a smoke test, because they had never heard of this issue even though there is a service bulletin that I had to personally find. Dealer seems to just want money. I think spilling gas every time I fill up is a major safety concern.

I HAVE BEEN DEALING WITH THE FUEL SHUTOFF PROBLEM SINCE IT WAS NEW. WHEN THE FUEL IS BEING PUT IN THE TANK THE FUEL WILL NOT SHUT OFF. THE FUEL SQUIRTS BACK OUT OF THE TANK, APPROX 1/2 GALLON. IT IS A SAFETY ISSUE THAT HAS A RECALL HOSE ON THE JEEP JK MODELS WHICH ARE UP TO MODEL 2008 0R 2009 WHICH HAS BEEN ADRESSED. THIS PROBLEM AFFECTS ALL JEEP JK MODELS. I HAVE FOUND A HOSE THAT IS THE REPLACEMENT PART BUT THE DEALER WILL NOT SELL IT TO ME SAYING ITS A RECALL PART. I WANT THIS PART SO I CAN FIX MY JEEP. I AM A CERTIFIED MERCEDES BENX TECH AND WANT TO FIX IT OR TAKE IT TO HAVE THAT PART PUT ON.

THEY INSTEAD ASK CONSUMERS TO FRONT THE COSTS AND SAVE RECEIPTS IN THE EVENT A RECALL IS ISSUED IN THE FUTURE FOR REIMBURSEMENT. I AM WRITING THIS HOPES THAT YOUR AGENCY WILL INVESTIGATE AND ISSUE THE RECALL IF NECESSARY SO THIS PROBLEM CAN BE FIXED.

I INSTALLED THIS PART AND IT SOLVED THE PROBLEM. THE DEALERS I WENT TO SAID THEY WERE NOT AWARE OF THIS FIX. I THINK THAT CHRYSLER SHOULD BE PAYING FOR THIS FIX. INSTEAD THEY ARE DENYING THAT THERE CONTINUES TO BE A PROBLEM ON THE NEWER VEHICLES. I CAN'T EMPHASIZE ENOUGH HOW DANGEROUS THIS PROBLEM IS.

I ALSO FEAR NEGATIVE IMPACT ON MY HEALTH DUE TO THIS ISSUE. BACKGROUND IS THAT THE PROBLEM RESULTS IN UNAVOIDABLE GAS SPILLING ON MY HANDS. WHEN I RAISED THIS ISSUE WITH MY JEEP DEALER, THEY INDICATED THAT THEY ALLEGEDLY NEVER HEARD OF THIS ISSUE, THAT THEY "COULDN'T FIND ANY PROBLEMS" AND THAT THERE IS "NOTHING WRONG" WITH THE FUEL SYSTEM OF MY WRANGLER. I FEEL THAT I'M NOT TAKEN SERIOUSLY BY MY JEEP DEALER. IT SEEMS THE GAS IS COMING BACK OUT OF THE TANK AND NOT THE NOZZLE SINCE WE HAVE GONE TO DIFFERENT GAS STATIONS. EVEN LET THE GAS NOZZLE SIT A MOMENT BEFORE REMOVING FROM TANK. VEHICLE ENGINE WAS SHUT OFF AND NOT RUNNING. NOZZLE WAS PROPERLY INSERTED. MY HUSBAND AND MYSELF HAVE TRIED TO DO IT WITHOUT THE GAS SPILLING (SLOW, NOT TOPPING OFF, WAITING TO REMOVE NOZZLE) BUT IT STILL DOES IT. NOT A SAFE VEHICLE FOR OUR SON TO TAKE TO COLLEGE.

I REALIZED AT THAT TIME THAT THE VEHICLE WAS STILL MOVING FORWARD, AND HAD TO JUMP BACK IN TO APPLY THE PARKING BRAKE TO STOP IT FROM ROLLING DOWN THE STREET. MY CO-WORKER SAID THAT THERE APPEARED TO BE SOMETHING ON FIRE UNDER THE HOOD, AND I TOLD HIM NOT TO OPEN IT, SO HE WENT FOR HELP. I PROCEEDED TO REMOVE MY WORK AND HUNTING GEAR. I MANAGED TO GET MY PAYROLL CHECKS, DEPOSIT CHECKS, AND MY TOOL BAG OUT OF THE VEHICLE BEFORE IT WAS FULLY INVOLVED, BOTH INSIDE AND OUT. AS I REACHED INTO THE BACK TO GRAB MY TOOL BAG, I NOTICED THAT THE FRONT PASSENGER COMPARMENT WAS ALREADY FULLY ENGULFED IN FLAMES. NEITHER OF US WAS HURT, EXCEPT FOR SOME SMOKE INHALATION. I AM THANKFUL THAT I DID NOT HAVE MY FAMILY WITH ME, THAT WE WERE NOT TRAVELING DOWN THE INTERSTATE, OR THAT I DID NOT MAKE IT HOME AND PARK THE JEEP IN THE GARAGE. FROM THE TIME THE JEEP SHUT OFF UNTIL IT WAS FULLY ENGULFED IN FLAMES WAS APPROX. 45 SECONDS. IN TALKING TO ME "OFF THE RECORD" THE INSPECTOR FROM JEEP SAID THAT HE BELIEVED THAT "DUE TO THE AMOUNT OF BLOW-BACK DAMAGE THE VEHICLE WAS ALREADY ON FIRE WHILE DRIVING IT, AND THAT IT WAS MOST LIKELY A FUEL LINE RUPTURE ISSUE. 2010 JEEP WRANGLER RUBICON UNLIMITED: WHILE REFUELING MY VEHICLE I ENGAGED THE HANDLE TO CONTINUE FUELING WHILE I WENT INSIDE THE GAS STATION. WHEN I RETURNED, THE PUMP HAD DISENGAGED, BUT THERE WAS FUEL ALL OVER THE SIDE OF MY JEEP AND ON THE GROUND. MY FUEL GAUGE REGISTERED FULL AND THIS HAD NEVER HAPPENED SO I THOUGHT THE FUEL PUMP MAY HAVE BEEN FAULTY. MY NEXT TRIP TO THE GAS STATION, I MONITORED IT MORE CLOSELY AND WAS ABLE TO REFUEL AS NORMAL CONFIRMING MY ORIGINAL THOUGHT THAT THE PUMP HAD MALFUNCTIONED. DURING MY NEXT ATTEMPT TO REFUEL I HAD AGAIN ENGAGED THE HANDLE TO CONTINUE FUELING AS I SAT INSIDE THE VEHICLE. I HEARD THE THUNK OF THE AUTOMATIC SHUT OFF AND SAW AGAIN THE GAS HAD SPRAYED ALL OVER THE SIDE OF MY JEEP AND ON THE GROUND. THIS WAS NOT THE SAME GAS STATION AS THE ORIGINAL OCCURRENCE SO I BELIEVED THE PROBLEM WAS ACTUALLY MY GAS TANK. I TOOK MY JEEP TO THE DEALERSHIP WHERE THEY REPLACED MY GAS TANK WITHOUT EXPLANATION. AT THIS POINT I HAD APPROXIMATELY 22K MILES ON MY JEEP. I PURCHASED MY JEEP NEW IN AUGUST 2010 WITH 154 MILES ON IT. I HAVE OWNED IT FOR 18 MONTHS AND IT HAS APPROXIMATELY 22K MILES ON IT. *KB
