Owner-Reported Issues (20 of 1133)

Air Bags3 issues
criticalAIR BAGS
Filed: Nov 2023

Your airbag warning light is flashing on and off while you drive at different speeds. This intermittent warning suggests a potential problem with your airbag system that needs diagnosis. A mechanic will need to scan your vehicle's airbag system with a diagnostic tool to identify whether it's a sensor issue, wiring problem, or module failure.

NHTSA #: 11553379
criticalAIR BAGS
Filed: Apr 2022

Your airbag warning light is on, and the diagnostic trouble code indicates a problem with the driver's side airbag squib (the ignition device that deploys the airbag). You're concerned whether this is just a faulty squib or if it's related to a bad clockspring (the coiled electrical connector that allows airbag signals to reach the steering wheel). This is a known issue reported by other Jeep owners on various forums.

NHTSA #: 11459868
criticalAIR BAGS
CrashFiled: Jul 2019

Your airbag failed to deploy during a crash accident. This is a critical safety issue, as airbags are designed to protect occupants in collisions.

NHTSA #: 11229734
Fuel/propulsion System3 issues
criticalFUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
Filed: Aug 2018

Your fuel injectors can overheat and cause engine misfiring or fire risk because the exhaust manifold sits directly underneath them. Your Jeep came with insulator blankets to protect against this, but when your valve cover gasket leaked oil onto the insulator, it became a fire hazard and you discarded it. When you tried to order replacement injector shields and an insulator blanket from a Chrysler dealership, they refused to sell them to you because your vehicle's records showed these recall parts were already installed.

NHTSA #: 11121983
highFUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
Filed: May 2019

Your fuel rail pulsation damper is leaking gasoline, which creates a safety and environmental hazard. The replacement fuel rail assembly is on national backorder and unavailable, leaving you unable to get the repair completed through normal dealer channels. This is a known issue affecting multiple Jeep owners since at least 2015.

NHTSA #: 11206494
highFUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
Filed: Apr 2019

You noticed rust on your fuel tank support system, and a mechanic confirmed it needs replacement. While driving, part of the rusted support system fell off your vehicle. The repair will likely involve removing the old rusted support brackets or straps and installing new ones to safely secure your fuel tank.

NHTSA #: 11196413
Engine3 issues
highENGINE
Filed: Jul 2022

Your engine shut off while you were driving at an undisclosed speed, but the vehicle restarted and ran normally afterward. An independent mechanic inspected the vehicle but couldn't reproduce the problem and didn't make repairs. This happened at around 174,000 miles.

Your car wouldn't start after having the windshield replaced at an independent mechanic shop. The vehicle hasn't been diagnosed or repaired yet, and you're waiting to have it towed to a dealer to find out what went wrong.

NHTSA #: 11451162
highENGINE
Filed: Jan 2019

Your car's coolant level has been depleted. This could indicate a leak in the cooling system or that the coolant simply needs to be refilled. Driving with insufficient coolant can cause your engine to overheat and suffer serious damage. You'll need to have the cooling system inspected for leaks and refilled with fresh coolant.

NHTSA #: 11170811
Tires2 issues
criticalTIRES
CrashFiled: Oct 2025

Your vehicle experienced a loss of traction while driving in light snow at reduced speeds, causing it to slide off the road, roll down an embankment, and hit a tree. The airbags did not deploy during the crash. Your son was injured and required chiropractic treatment for stiffness. The vehicle was determined to be a total loss, and you've linked this incident to a known tire-related safety campaign.

NHTSA #: 11695009
highTIRES
Filed: Feb 2022

While driving at 25 mph, your front driver's side tire suddenly blew out, causing your vehicle to bounce and shake. You noticed smoke coming from that tire. The tire was replaced with your spare, and the dealer later replaced it with a new tire.

NHTSA #: 11451396
Fuel System, Gasoline1 issue
criticalFUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE
FireFiled: Jul 2021

While driving at 10 mph, your 2001 Jeep Cherokee suddenly lost power and smoke came from the engine. A mechanic found a faulty top cylinder, and smoke indicated a potential fire risk. This issue is covered under a known fuel system safety recall, and the manufacturer should diagnose and repair it at no cost at an authorized dealer.

NHTSA #: 11424645
Seat Belts1 issue
criticalSEAT BELTS
Filed: Feb 2020

Your rear seat belts won't lock properly when fully extended, making it unsafe or impossible to install child safety seats securely. This is a persistent issue, not a one-time occurrence. The dealer has declined to address it, citing unfamiliarity with the problem. Fixing this may require replacement of the seat belt retractor mechanism or the entire seat belt assembly.

NHTSA #: 11310104
Suspension,service Brakes,engine1 issue
criticalSUSPENSION,SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE
Filed: Oct 2019

Your 2001 Jeep Cherokee has multiple serious issues affecting safety and reliability. The front suspension on the passenger side is bent, causing the vehicle to pull to the left and feel unstable at highway speeds, while the engine knocks constantly and has stalled while driving on the highway. Your brakes have been slipping, grinding, and even smoking, and the engine struggles to exceed 70 mph; you've also noticed a persistent water leak from the dashboard onto the passenger side carpet. Addressing these issues will likely require suspension component replacement, brake system inspection and repair, engine diagnostics for the knock and stalling, and investigation of the water leak source.

NHTSA #: 11268016
Seats,unknown Or Other1 issue
highSEATS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
Filed: Dec 2025

The bolt holding your driver's side seat broke, making the seat unstable or wobbly. Other 2001 Jeep Cherokee owners have reported similar issues with front seat frame bolts breaking. This is a safety concern because an unsecured seat could be dangerous while driving. The fix would involve replacing the broken seat bolt and potentially reinforcing or replacing the seat frame.

NHTSA #: 11705825
Fuel System, Gasoline,engine1 issue
highFUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE,ENGINE
Filed: Mar 2021

Your vehicle won't start due to a fuel system issue. A mechanic found that the fuel tank sending unit has failed and vapor lock is preventing the engine from starting. The mechanic couldn't find replacement parts to fix the problem. Repairing this will likely involve replacing the fuel tank sending unit and addressing the vapor lock condition.

NHTSA #: 11400320
Structure1 issue
highSTRUCTURE
Filed: Aug 2019

Your 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee was included in a safety recall (N47) due to a structural defect in the rear of the vehicle that could potentially cause failure or fire if hit from behind. The manufacturer's fix requires adding a reinforcing hitch to the rear. However, when you took your vehicle to the dealer for the recall repair, they refused service and said your vehicle didn't qualify — and they maintained this position on a second visit.

NHTSA #: 11242349
Unknown Or Other,fuel/propulsion System1 issue
highUNKNOWN OR OTHER,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
Filed: Jun 2019

The metal straps or supports holding your fuel tank in place have rusted or deteriorated, and your gas tank is now hanging too low and at risk of scraping against the road while you drive. This could potentially damage the tank and create a fuel leak hazard. You'll likely need to replace the fuel tank straps or mounting brackets to secure the tank back to its proper position.

NHTSA #: 11221796
Structure,fuel/propulsion System1 issue
highSTRUCTURE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
Filed: May 2019

Your fuel tank has developed rust and corrosion, and the undercarriage is also corroded with pieces falling off. You suspect the fuel tank cover may have come loose or fallen off and gotten wet. This issue wasn't diagnosed or repaired, and neither the dealer nor manufacturer were notified about it.

NHTSA #: 11216940
Electrical System1 issue
mediumELECTRICAL SYSTEM
Filed: Mar 2021

Your overhead display has stopped working. Online forums suggest this is caused by a faulty wiring harness that needs replacement, which can be expensive. A faulty wiring harness could potentially cause other electrical problems in your vehicle. Fixing this will likely require replacing the overhead display wiring harness.

NHTSA #: 11399649
