Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2011-2013 Tucson vehicles. The engine oil pan may leak and, if not addressed, the loss of oil may result in engine damage.
Fix: Hyundai has notified owners, and dealers will inspect for an oil pan leak, replacing it if necessary, and install an updated oil pressure switch, free of charge. The recall began August 19, 2019. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 181.

Three months ago, I was driving my car when the engine shut down while I was driving on the highway. I was able to pull over safely, however, I could have been in a fatal accident as my engine could no longer accelerate while I was on the highway. My car has been sitting in the Hyundai dealership since September 9 when the incident occurred, with Hyundai stating it can take 6-8 months. This has since placed my financial situation at a personal difficulty as the dealership has not been able to even diagnose car yet as they’ve stated, many other cars have the same issue that are ahead of mine. I tried reaching out to Hyundai customer support to get a rental car, but they said they cannot provide one until a proper diagnosis has been met so I would have to pay out-of-pocket until then, which I don’t know for sure if the rental will for sure be covered in full, much less I cannot afford to pay out of pocket in the meantime anyhow. If Hyundai could send a certified diagnosis to the customer support, that would then allow them to fund a rental car while the dealership finishes repairing the engine.

Driving home doing about 70 mph, i perchased this vehicle directly from a Hyundai Dealership, (112,445 at time of perchase) I had the vehicle for about a month and half, the vehicle did not give me any warnings until it randomly started to rev high while on the highway and very quickly after that I heard a clanking noise and my dash lights came on and my car filled with white smoke I had to pull over and there was oil all over the back of my car, the dealer never told me exactly was was wrong (after it was fixed) with it besides it happened near the engine block, there have been reports of this engine breaking (Hyundai Theta II 2.4L) due to faulty connecting rod bearing in the engine that may starve themselves of oil (there is actually a pending lawsuit for oil consumption) I believe this is what caused my engine to go. They gave me a different engine with 16,000 miles less (it has yet to break) At the dealership (where I bought it from)it took about a month and half to get it back it was “inspected” by my extended warranty and Hyundai mechanics, I was left without a loaner for two weeks and paid 106$ out of my pocket for a faulty engine, the dealership was kind enough to cover a big portion of it.

2012 HYUNDAI TUCSON Bought it used, 1 prior owner ~50K, very clean. Since is VERY well maintained (incl. oil changes). Periodic engine light off & on for no reason. NO other probs, no oil leaks EVER. All recalls done. Dealership checked 11/2021 when doing recall, didn't document, it's "a short in wiring", "expensive to fix" & blamed "not tightening gas cap"?! THEN...On freeway with no warning light, a loud "bang" noise heard, vehicle began shaking. Initially felt like flat tire, barely able to control, lost power but able to steer off highway, engine died. VERY, VERY dangerous situation in heavy traffic. During tow to dealership, found # to national recall center who assigned a case number & was told "it's being escalated nationally..a corporate case worker (CW) will call in 3-5 days". Told "tell dealership to give loaner car". No loaners b/c LONG waiting list. Corporate requested multiple exams & photos from dealership in search of "engine sludge" (shift blame technique "poor maintenance") none was found. Engine pictures pristine (per dealership) "like a new engine". Corporate even requested 1st owner records!? Diagnosis:"catastrophic engine failure" due to bearing failure, estimate ~$7K+ for new engine. Corporate offer: 80% of engine replacement cost w/parts warranty (1 yr/12K), no loaner car unless delay due to backorder. Owner gets to counter offer or discuss w/ CW whose role (apparently)is to negotiate w/owner. 3 wks, never rec'd call from anyone. Hrs, days, wks spent chasing elusive CW. "Cust. Care" answers "hello, what's VIN & mileage?". Forced to repeat same story over & over, finally learned CW out on PTO, no one reassigned (someone slipped w/ "we are SOO busy here"). Finally reached CW. Call #1: nice guy. Call #2: lied, blamed dealership, mean, shaming, told to quit calling, wasting HIS time. Take it or leave it on 80/20 deal to replace w/another Theta II (aka we never fixed our prob) engine. NEVER BUY HYUNDAI! SOMEONE COULD'VE DIED.
Air conditioning system was just replaced for $2000. A week later, car to a dealership for a recall. Two and a half weeks later, while driving, engine lights came on, hard to accelerate, then rattling noise from engine. My son was on way back to college and on a rural road with not too much traffic. He pulled over and was not able to restart car. Had to be towed to nearest town (between home and his school, about 1 1/2 hours from each). The repair shop said total engine failure. They investigated and not able to find a rebuilt engine because engine has too many problems and a used engine would be $8000 to install and would likely have same defect. The car only has 96,000 miles. We bought used, from a Hyundai dealership, with a good CarFax report. It was a safety problem because he could have been devastating if he was on a busy highway. Unfortunately, it happened in a scarcely populated area and he was stranded while it was getting dark waiting for the tow truck. No warning lights until time of engine breakdown. Car had just been seen at a service station and car dealership just days before breakdown. We cannot take chance of investing that much money into a car that would have same problem. Had to have car sold for scrap.

My vehicle has stalled (died) several times on me in the last several months. This happens when I am pulling into traffic or stopping at a light, etc. and is a serious problem because it could cause me to be hit. I took the car to my licensed mechanic and he said there was metal in the variable timing hub...he put the new part on it and then changed the oil and took it for a test drive. On return it was rechecked and found to be full of metal shavings again. He stated I would need new engine because mine was falling apart. He checked for recalls and found that this problem was a recall on the Santa Fe and the Sonata but not for my Tuscon...this does not make sense as these vehicles basically have the same or similar engines. Check engine light and oil light came on and stayed on. I was advised by my mechanic to contact you with this problem. I believe Tuscons should be added to the recall list before lives are lost. I believe my car should be repaired by the dealership..I would appreciate any help you can give me on this

HAD TO GET MY CAR TOWED ON THE CITY STREET. THE MECANIC HAD TO REPLACE THE ENGINE DUE TO THE ENGINE ISSUE. SUBMITTED A CLAIM TO HYUNDAI- CAMPAIGN181 IN JANUARY WITH NO RESPONSE.
I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY GOING ABOUT 70 MILES AND HOUR AND FOR NO REASON I LOST POWER , THE OIL LIGHT AND BATTERY LIGHT FLASHED BRIEFLY AND THANKFULLY I WAS ABLE TO GET TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD OFF THE HIGHWAY. IT TURNED OFF. I WAS ABLE TO GET IT STARTED AGIN AND BABY IT TO THE NEAREST GAS STATION LESS THAN A MILE DOWN THE ROAD. MY HUSBAND TOLD ME TO JUST BABY IT HOME AND HE WOULD TAKE A LOOK AT IT. IT STARTED MAKING A TICKING SOUND. I DID GET IT HOME AND MY HUSBAND SAID MY ENGINE WAS SHOT. NOW I DON'T EVEN KNOW HOW THIS IS POSSIBLE FOR A CAR THAT WAS RUNNING JUST FINE AND THEN ALL THIS WERID STUFF HAPPENS. PLEASE LOOK INTO THIS. I COULD HAVE BEEN KILLED. I HAVE A 2012 HYUNDAI TUCSON AWD WITH 86,000 MILES ON IT. WHILE DRIVING IT RECENTLY COULD HEAR ENGINE RATTLE/KNOCKING NOISE. BROUGHT IT INTO THE DEALER AND AFTER TWO DAYS LOOKING AT IT, THEY SAID THE ENGINE NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. THEY SAID THE DAMAGE IS IN THE LOWER PART OF THE ENGINE. THEY SAID SINCE I AM THE SECOND OWNER, MANUFACTURER WARRANTY DOES NOT APPLY. $9000 TO REPLACE ENGINE. RECALL FOR THIS ENGINE IN THE 2012 KIA WITH THE MANUFACTURER PAYS TO HAVE REPLACED, BUT NOT FOR SAME ISSUE UNDER THE HYUNDAI BRAND??
WHILE ACCELERATING ONTO THE HIGHWAY, A CLICKING OR CLACKING NOISE WAS HEARD FROM THE ENGINE, THE VEHICLE THEN SEEMED TO SUDDENLY LOOSE POWER THEN STALL. I WAS FORTUNATE TO BE ABLE TO COAST THE VEHICLE OFF THE ROAD AND INTO A PARKING LOT. WITH THE VEHICLE PARKED, FOUND OIL POURING FROM UNDER THE ENGINE AND ALSO SAW A LONG TRAIL OF OIL LEADING FROM THE HIGHWAY TO THE VEHICLE. ALSO FOUND METAL SHAVINGS IN THE OIL AND DEBRIS FROM THE BROKEN ENGINE BLOCK CAUGHT IN THE PLASTIC SHROUD UNDER THE ENGINE.

ON DEC. 2 I WAS DRIVING TO THE DEALERSHIP ON A CITY ROAD, AFTER ACCELERATING FROM A STOPLIGHT STOP, THE ENGINE BLEW. LUCKILY WE WERE ALL AT A LOW SPEED AS THE LIGHT HAD JUST GONE GREEN. DEALERSHIP SAYS IT THREW A ROD THROUGH BLOCK AND SENT ME A PICTURE. THIS CAR HAS THE THETA II ENGINE. MY MODEL AND YEAR HAVE NOT BEEN INVOLVED IN THE RECALLS NOR LAWSUITS FOR THE ISSUE THE ENGINE IS HAVING IN OTHER MODELS, BUT THIS ENGINE HAD ONLY 80K, HAS BEEN REGULARLY SERVICED, AND I CANT IMAGINE WHAT ELSE WOULD CAUSE SUCH A THING OTHER THAN A MANUFACTURING DEFECT LIKE THE ONE I AM READING ABOUT WITH THE DEBRIS.

THERE ARE NUMEROUS REPORTS OF FAILURE OF THE THETA II 2.4 LITER ENGINES, WHICH MY CAR HAS, YET NO RECALL ISSUES. WAS DRIVING MY 2012 HYUNDAI TUCSON WHEN IT SUDDENLY DIED AT A STOPLIGHT. IT WOULDN'T RESTART. WHEN I TURNED THE KEY TO RESTART IT NOTHING HAPPENED, NO CLICKING, IT DIDN'T TURN OVER AT ALL. CALLED A TOW TRUCK AND HAD THEM TOW IT TO OUR LOCAL FIRESTONE. THEY RAN A DIAGNOSTIC ON IT AND THE ONLY THING THEY COULD SEE WAS THAT THE STARTER WASN'T WORKING. THEY REPLACED THE STARTER AND AFTER STRUGGLING TO GET IT TO START EVEN WITH THE NEW STARTER IT CLANGED AND BANGED AND THEN DIED AGAIN ONCE THEY WERE ABLE TO GET IT STARTED. I CHECKED ONLINE AND SAW THERE WAS A RECALL ON THE VEHICLE. I HAD IT TOWED TO THE HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP. THEY LOOKED AT THE CAR AND SAID IT NEEDED A NEW ENGINE AND THAT THE DAMAGE WAS NOT RELATED TO THE RECALL. I AM NOT THE ORIGINAL OWNER AND PURCHASED THE CAR USED FROM THE DEALERSHIP ABOUT 3 YEARS AGO WHEN IT HAD APPROX. 57K MILES ON IT. IT NOW HAS APPROX. 80K MILES ON IT. THE CAR IS WELL MAINTAINED. I CHANGE THE OIL REGULARLY. BEFORE THIS THERE WERE NO ISSUES. HYUNDAI AND THE DEALER TAKE NO RESPONSIBILITY AND SAY THAT I AM RESPONSIBLE TO PAY FOR THE NEW ENGINE.

IN OCTOBER 2019 I TOOK MY CAR TO HYUNDAI TO HAVE THEM SERVICE FOR THE ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING RECALL. THEY REPLACED THE PART AND I WAS ON MY WAY. I SERVICED MY CAR REGULARLY, AND JUST TWO WEEKS AFTER MY LAST OIL CHANGE I WAS DRIVING 70MPH DOWN THE HIGHWAY AND THE CAR STARTED SPUTTERING AND THEN COMPLETELY DIED. LUCKILY I WAS ABLE TO GET PULLED OVER WHERE I ATTEMPTED TO START IT AGAIN AND IT MADE A LOUD KNOCK AND THEN WOULDN'T START. I HAD THE CAR TOWED TO A NEARBY MECHANIC WHO SAID THE ENGINE HAD A HUGE HOLE IN IT. I ASKED IF IT COULD BE THAT THE FOLKS WHO CHANGED MY OIL MESSED SOMETHING UP, BUT HE SAID IT WAS UNLIKELY BECAUSE THERE WAS OIL IN THE ENGINE AND THAT IT WAS MORE LIKELY SOMETHING FAULTY IN THE MANUFACTURING OF THE CAR OR POTENTIALLY DUE TO THE RECALL SERVICE NOT BEING DONE PROPERLY. SO I DID SOME RESEARCH AND THERE ARE TONS OF OTHER 2012 HYUNDAI TUCSON OWNERS WHO HAVE EXPERIENCED THE SAME EXACT ISSUE. I THEN SAW THERE IS A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT FOR SIMILAR ISSUES, HOWEVER THE 2012 MODELS WEREN'T INCLUDED IN THE LAWSUIT. THIS IS CLEARLY SOMETHING THAT HYUNDAI NEEDS TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR AND INCLUDE THIS MODEL IN THE LAWSUIT, OR AT THE VERY EAST MAKE RIGHT AND FIX THESE ENGINES AT NO COST AND PAY FOR THE INCONVENIENCE AND EXPENSES INCURRED FOR RENTALS, TOWING, AND TIME AWAY FROM WORK.

ON 5/10/2020, CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WENT ON, ENGINE SPUTTERED, WE WERE ABLE TO EXIT FREEWAY AND PULL OVER AND BY THAT TIME, CAR WAS SHAKING VERY HARD. TOWED TO MECHANIC, CAR REQUIRES ENGINE OVERHAUL. CAR THEN TOWED TO HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP, CAR NEEDS A FULL ENGINE REBUILD. I HAVE MAINTAINED MY CAR WITH OIL CHANGES AND THE CAR HAS 100086 MILES. THERE ARE NUMEROUS REPORTS OF FAILURE OF THE THETA II 2.4 LITER ENGINES, WHICH MY CAR HAS, YET NO RECALL ISSUES. WE HAD THE CAR TOWED TO OUR MECHANIC BECAUSE THE ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. THE MECHANIC TESTED THE CAR AND HEARD A TAPPING NOISE WHEN STEPPING ON THE ACCELERATOR. THE MECHANIC NOTED THAT THERE WERE LARGE METAL SHARDS IN OIL PAN. THE SHARDS WERE NOT PRESENT IN THE OIL WHEN OIL WAS DRAINED OUT. THE METAL SHARDS WERE ONLY VISIBLE ONCE THE OIL PAN WAS REMOVED. THE MECHANIC COMPLETED ADDITIONAL INSPECTION TO ENSURE THERE WERE NO OTHER ISSUES. AFTER REMOVING THE OIL PUMP, HE FOUND ALL THE ROD BEARINGS HAD PLAY. THIS APPEARS TO BE A MANUFACTURE DEFECT. I SPOKE TO THE SERVICE ADVISOR AND HE TOLD ME THAT A NUMBER OF THEIR CUSTOMERS WERE HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM, BUT THE 2012 HYUNDAI ENGINE WAS NOT ON RECALL. BASED ON RESEARCH, WE DISCOVERED THAT THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH ALL 2.4 LITER ENGINES ON ALL PLATFORMS FOR KIA AND HYUNDAI. WE TOOK THE CAR TO THE HYUNDAI DEALER AND WERE TOLD WE NEEDED TO PURCHASE A NEW REDESIGNED ENGINE. DURING THIS CONVERSATION, WE WERE NOTIFIED THE NEW ENGINE HAS ENGINE ROD BEARINGS THAT ARE MORE STURDY. HYUNDAI CURRENTLY HAS A RECALL FOR THE OIL PAN AND ALSO HAS RECALLS FOR ENGINES IN OTHER CAR MODELS BUT NOT THIS MODEL. A NEW ENGINE SHOULD NOT BE REQUIRED FOR AN 7 YEAR OLD CAR WITH 80,000 MILES. AS A CAR PROFESSIONAL, I SUSPECT THIS IS DUE TO THE ISSUES WITH A DEFECTIVE ROD BEARINGS THAT WEAR PREMATURELY AND RESULT IN CATASTROPHIC ENGINE DAMAGE SO THE ENGINES SHOULD BE COVERED IN THE RECALL.
MY CAR HAS HAD A KNOCKING NOISE AND WHEN I CALLED THE DEALERSHIP IN MARCH 2019 THEY TOLD ME THAT THIS WAS DUE TO A RECENT RECALL THAT CAME OUT FOR THE OIL PAN IS LEAKING AND TOLD ME TO WAIT UNTIL THEY HAD A FIX FOR IT SO I WAITED BROUGHT MY CAR IN FOR THE RECALL. THEY PERFORMED THE RECALL IT DID NOT FIX THE KNOCKING NOISE I CALLED CORPORATE TO FILE A CLAIM THEY HAD ME RETURN TO THE DEALERSHIP AND RUN DIAGNOSTICS IN DETERMINING THE DIAGNOSTICS I AM IN NEED OF A NEW ENGINE HOWEVER THEY ONLY WANT TO PAY 2000 OF THE $3000 TO $6000 IT'S GOING TO COST TO REPLACE THE SHORT BLOCK ENGINE. THEY ALSO STATED THEY HAVE NO IDEA WHAT IS WRONG WITH MY CURRENT ENGINE NOR DO THEY KNOW WHY IT FAILED AND THEY ALSO DON'T KNOW WHY MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT NEVER CAME ON. THE LOCAL DEALERSHIP ALSO TOLD ME IT WAS FINE TO CONTINUE DRIVING THE VEHICLE.

THERE WAS A RECALL ON MY VEHICLE SO I TOOK IT TO THE HYUNDAI DEALER TO SEE IF THAT WAS THE CAUSE THEY TOLD ME IT WAS NOT, AS I DID RESEARCH I FOUND THAT HYUNDAI HAS TWO DIFFERENT CARS WITH THE SAME TYPE OF ISSUE WITH THE ENGINE. HYUNDAI FINALLY CAME WITH A DIAGNOSTIC THAT IT WAS MY SPUN BEARING THAT WAS THE ISSUE WITH THE ENGINE, WHICH IS THE EXACT ISSUE AS THE TWO OTHER CARS THE SONATA AND SANTA FE FROM HYUNDAI WITH A RECALL. I HAVE REACHED OUT TO HYUNDAI MANUFACTURING TO INFORM THEM OF THE ISSUE, THEY TOLD ME THAT THE HYUNDAI DEALER WHO DID THE DIAGNOSTIC DOES NOT HAVE TO REPORT THESE FINDINGS IF THEY DO NOT WANT TO. I HAD TO HAVE THE CAR TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP AND AGAIN AFTER RUNNING DIAGNOSTIC IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THE ENGINE IS SEIZED. NOW I AM IN A WAITING GAME TO SEE IF HYUNDAI WILL DO THE RIGHT THING AND REPLACE THE ENGINE.

ON JULY 4, 2019 I WAS DRIVING AND MY VEHICLE SUDDENLY BROKE DOWN WHILE DRIVING ABOUT 60MPH IN MANAHAWKIN NJ ON RT. 72. I HAVE NOT HAD ANY ISSUES LEADING UP TO THIS. I HAD TO HAVE THE VEHICLE TOWED. AUG 11TH MY CAR STARTED MAKING A SLIGHT TICKING NOISE, I MADE AN APPOINTMENT WITH HYUNDAI FOR SERVICE TO FIND OUT ABOUT THE NOISE. AS I LEFT THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT OF WILLIAMSBURG HYUNDAI THE DAY I MADE THE APPOINTMENT, I ASKED THE SERVICE ATTENDANT IF HE WAS SURE THE CAR WAS OK TO DRIVE, HE ASSURED ME IT WOULD BE OKAY. APPROXIMATELY FIVE MILES DOWN THE ROAD THE ENGINE STARTED TO VIBRATE AMD SHAKE SO BAD I HAD TO PULL OVER AND THE ENGINE LIGHT CAME IN FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE I HAVE OWNED THE 2012 HYUNDAI TUSCON. I WAS ABLE TO TURN AROUND AND DRIVE THE VEHICLE @25MPH WITH HAZARD LIGHTS ON, BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP THAT WAS NOW CLOSED. I FILLED OUT THE INFORMATION FOR THE AFTER HOURS DROP OFF AND LEFT THE CAR AT THE SERVICE GARAGE. I RECEIVED A CALL TODAY THAT I NEEDED A NEW MOTOR!!!!!! THERE WAS NO WARNING!! MY MECHANIC WAS ABLE TO FIND ME A USED ENGINE WITH LOW MILES (70K) TO PUT IN MY VEHICLE. THE TOTAL COST FOR THE ENGINE WAS SHY OF $5,000 WHICH WASN'T TOO FAR FROM WHAT THE CAR IS WORTH NOW.

WSDOT AND WASHINGTON STATE PATROL ASSISTED GETTING ME OFF OF THE FREEWAY TO A SAFE LOCATION. I HAD IT TOWED TO A REPAIR SHOP. THEY DIAGNOSED CATASTROPHIC ENGINE FAILURE AND THAT THE CAR NEEDS A NEW ENGINE. IT IS A 2012 HYUNDAI TUCSON WITH A 2.4L ENGINE. ADDITIONALLY, AT 75,000 THE TRANSMISSION FAILED IN THIS VEHICLE, AND WAS REPLACED AT THAT TIME. THIS WAS COVERED BY MY EXTENDED WARRANTY AT THE TIME.
WHEN DRIVING THE VEHICLE ON A FIVE HOUR TRIP, THE ENGINE SUDDENLY BECAME VERY NOISY. FOLLOWING EVALUATION BY THE DEALERSHIP IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THE ENGINE HAS A FAILED ROD BEARING. THE ENGINE WAS NOT TORN DOWN FOR A DETAILED ANALYSIS TO MAKE THIS DETERMINATION. THE ONLY AVENUE OFFERED TO REPAIR THE VEHICLE WAS TO INSTALL A JUNK YARD ENGINE AS PARTS AND ENGINE COMPONENTS ARE NOT AVAILABLE THROUGH THE MANUFACTURER.
ENGINE FAILED IN OCT.2018 IN BIG BEAR, CALIFORNIA. AFTER DRIVING FOR SEVERAL HOURS UP THE MOUNTAIN, A LOUD RATTLING SOUND OCCURRED DRIVING AT LOW SPEEDS IN THE CITY. INDEPENDENT LOCAL MECHANIC DETERMINED IT WAS THE PISTONS NOT WORKING PROPERLY CAUSING COMPLETE ENGINE FAILURE. MECHANIC CONFIRMED THE VEHICLE COULD NOT BE DRIVEN MUCH FURTHER, IT WOULD NOT HAVE MADE IT DOWN THE MOUNTAIN, AND I WAS LUCKY IT DIDN'T FAIL ON THE MOUNTAIN. SINCE ENGINE STILL UNDER WARRANTY, I HAD TO TOW IT DOWN THE MOUNTAIN TO NEAREST DEALERSHIP IN LOMA LINDA, CA. AT DEALERSHIP, DETERMINED AND CONFIRMED ENGINE FAILED AND UNDER WARRANTY. NO PARTS AVAILABLE (PERHAPS DUE TO OTHER MODEL RECALL?). GIVEN SMALLER DEALER LOANER VEHICLE - INSUFFICIENT FOR MY NEEDS. IT IS NOW JANUARY 2019 AND NO PART POTENTIALLY AVAILABLE UNTIL LATE FEBRUARY. (IS THIS THE SAME ENGINE AS THE SANTE FE AND SONATA RECALL?) DEALERSHIP REFERRED TO HYUNDAI CUSTOMER CARE CENTER IN DECEMBER. CASE FILED. CASE MANAGER CONTACTED MID-DECEMBER WITH LITTLE INFORMATION AND OFFER OF MONETARY COMPENSATION FOR TIME W/O VEHICLE. NO OTHER CONTACT FROM CASE MANAGER FOR OVER A MONTH NOW. HYUNDAI CUSTOMER CARE CENTER INDICATES THERE IS NO ONE ELSE OTHER THAN NON-RESPONSIVE CASE MANAGER THAT I CAN CONTACT. IF THERE ARE NO REPLACEMENT ENGINES AVAILABLE - THIS MUST BE A PART OF A LARGER PROBLEM. I WANT MY 2012 TUCSON REPAIRED OR REPLACED. AND, I BELIEVE THE 2012 TUCSON SHOULD BE ADDED TO THE HYUNDAI ENGINE RECALL ISSUE.
PURCHASED CAR USED ON 10/24/18. "CATASTROPHIC ENGINE FAILURE" OCCURRED 53 DAYS AFTER PURCHASE. ENTERING HIGHWAY, ACCELERATED ABOVE 45MPH, HAD TROUBLE CHANGING SHIFTS (AUTOMATIC), "SPUTTERING" SOUND FROM THE ENGINE AND COULD NO LONGER ACCELERATE, ENGINE CUT OFF SUDDENLY, ALL DASH LIGHTS CAME ON. WAS ABLE TO COAST SAFELY TO THE SHOULDER. WAS NOT ABLE TO TURN ENGINE BACK ON. TOOK TO AUTO SHOP - WAS FIRST TOLD IT WAS A BAD STARTER, STARTER WAS REPLACED BUT STILL NOT FIXED. NEXT DIAGNOSIS: IT WAS A BAD BATTERY, BATTERY WAS REPLACED BUT STILL NOT FIXED. NEXT DIAGNOSIS: BAD WIRING FROM BATTERY TO STARTER BUT STILL NOT FIXED. MORE INVESTIGATING BY AUTO SHOP AND REPORTED THAT TIMING CHAIN WAS PRESUMED BROKEN AND CAUSED ENGINE TO "LOCK UP". "ENGINE REBUILD" NOT RECOMMENDED, BUT 2.4L ENGINES ARE NO LONGER MANUFACTURED, THE ONLY OPTION IS TO GET A USED ONE. MY MILEAGE WAS 86,722 AT TIME OF INCIDENT.
I PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE IN AUGUST, 2018 AS A USED UNIT. STARTING THE NEXT MONTH I WOULD BE DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD AND DOING THE SAME SPEED WITH NO ACCELERATION ON MY PART AND THE MOTOR WOULD REV UP BY ITSELF TO 6000-8000 RPM AND THE VEHICLE DOES NOT GAIN ANY SPEED. THIS HAS HAPPENED INTERMITTENTLY DESCRIBED TO MY MECHANIC WHEN I TOOK IN FOR AN OIL CHANGE AND HE COULDN'T FIGURE OUT WHAT COULD HAVE HAPPENED. THANKSGIVING DAY TRAVELING ABOUT 95 MILES TO MY BROTHER'S HOUSE AND DID THE REVVING 3X'S. SINCE THANKSGIVING THE SAME PROBLEM HAS HAPPENED APPROXIMATELY 4 MORE TIMES. THIS HAPPENS WHEN THE VEHICLE IS IN MOTION AND MAINTAINING THE SAME SPEED. THE SPEEDS HAVE BEEN BETWEEN 40 TO 65 MPH, SO THERE ISN'T ONE SET SPEED THAT IT HAPPENS. SINCE IT DOESN'T GAIN/LOSE SPEED IT HASN'T BEEN A PROBLEM YET.
DRIVING ON THE ON RAMP OF INTERSTATE AND IT CUT OFF. ALL OF THE DASH LIGHTS FLASHED ONCE THEN IT CUT OFF. I WAS TOLD BY TWO DIFFERENT AUTO REPAIR SHOPS THAT THE ENGINE FROZE. CALL DEALERSHIP AND WAS TOLD THAT THE 2.4L ENGINE WAS NOT MANUFACTURED ANYMORE. IT IS SITTING AT AN AUTOMOTIVE SHOP WAITING ON AN ENGINE FROM A WRECKED TUCSON COSTING ME $6,500 - 7,000 TO PUT IN. THE CAR HAS APPROX. 159,000 MILES ALSO HAD TO REPLACE TRANSMISSION AROUND 103,000 MILES
WHILE DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY I LOST POWER IN MY CAR WAS ABLE TO PULL OVER TO THE SHOULDER AND HAD NO POWER TO THE CAR WOULDN'T START, CALLED TRIPLE A AND TOWED TO THEIR NEAREST FACILITY THEY DIAGNOSED A SEIZED ENGINE AND BAD STARTER, BECAUSE IF HYUNDAI WARRANTY HAD IT TOWED TO A HYUNDAI DEALER, THIS WAS AT THE END OF JULY 2018, THEY AGREED THE ENGINE SEIZED AND BAD STARTER, THEY APPROVED IT AS UNDER WARRANTY. THEY DO NOT KNOW WHEN THEY WILL HAVE AN ENGINE AS THEY ARE ON BACK ORDER WORLDWIDE.
WHILE ON A TRIP TO ARIZONA DRIVING ABOUT 70 MPH ON A HIGHWAY IN NEW MEXICO. THE ENGINE AND CAR JERKED REALLY HARD AND THE ENGINE STARTED KNOCKING AT AROUND 77,500 MILES. IT ENDED UP BEING A SPUN CONNECTING ROD BEARING. HYUNDAI IS REPLACING THE ENGINES ON THE SANTA FE AND SONATA BUT NOT THE TUCSON. I WAS RUNNING SYNTHETIC OIL AND A MOBILE 1 FILTER AT THE TIME. AFTER GOING ONLINE IT SEEMS AS IF THEY DIDN'T CLEAN THE OIL PASSAGES IN THE CRANK SHAFT WHEN THEY ASSEMBLED THE ENGINE. THE TUCSON SHOULD BE PART OF THE ENGINE REPLACEMENT PROGRAM. 2.0 & 2.4 ENGINES HAVE THIS ISSUE.
JULY 2018, TRIED TO PASS A CAR AT ABOUT 40 MPH (SPEED LIMIT ON THE ROAD WAS 50 MPH) AND MY TUCSON WOULDN'T ACCELERATE. I GRADUALLY PUSHED THE GAS PEDAL TO THE FLOOR AND IT STOPPED ACCELERATING AT ABOUT 50, BUT WAS MAKING THIS AWFUL WINDING NOISE LIKE IT WAS TRYING TO SHIFT GEARS BUT COULDN'T. AT THIS POINT I'M PLAYING CHICKEN WITH THE CAR I TRIED TO PASS, AND THERE'S ANOTHER CAR COMING TOWARDS ME. I FINALLY GO PAST THE CAR AND STARTED PULLING OVER ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND ALL OF MY DASHBOARD LIGHTS CAME ON AND THE ENGINE IS STILL WINDING AND MAKING NOISES. I TURNED THE CAR OFF AND TRIED TO RESTART. IT SPUTTERED AT 1ST, BUT DID START. I WENT HOME, BUT AFTER THAT THE ENGINE WAS MAKING AWFUL WINDING, TICKING, AND CLANKING NOISES. I BROUGHT IT INTO THE DEALER THAT SERVICES MY VEHICLE AND AFTER BEING THERE FOR SEVERAL DAYS, THEY SAID IT WAS THE ENGINE ROD BEARING AND I NEEDED A NEW ENGINE. LUCKILY I HAVE A THIRD PARTY WARRANTY THAT IS COVERING IT, BUT AFTER DOING SOME RESEARCH I SEE THAT THIS IS A HUGE ISSUE FOR HYUNDAI TUCSON OWNERS AND THAT HYUNDAI HAD THIS SAME ISSUE WITH THEIR SONATAS.. APPARENTLY THE SONATAS HAVE A RECALL FOR THIS SAME ISSUE BUT NOT THE TUCSON. AS OF TODAY, MY CAR IS STILL AT THE DEALER AND HYUNDAI HAS PUSHED THE ETA OF MY MOTOR OUT TO NOVEMBER, BUT THIS IS THE 2ND DELAY AND I'M NOT SO SURE THAT IT WILL BE READY NEXT MONTH AFTER READING ALL OF THE STORIES OF OTHERS THAT HAVE HAD THEIR TUCSONS AT THE DEALERS SINCE APRIL AND MAY AND KEEP GETTING THEIR ETS'S FOR THEIR ENGINES PUSHED BACK.
STARTED MY CAR IN THE MORNING AND IT TOOK A LITTLE LONGER TO CRANK BEFORE STARTING. DROVE IT HALF A MILE AND KIND OF NOTICED DECREASE IN PERFORMANCE THEN STARTING UP A HILL AND JUST FORGET ABOUT IT. VERY VERY SLOW. AT THE TOP OF THE HILL THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT POPPED ON AND AT THAT POINT I WAS ALREADY LOOKING FOR A SAFE PLACE TO PULL OVER. DROVE AN ADDITIONAL 1/10TH OF A MILE TO PULL OVER (MOSTLY CRUISED SINCE IT WAS NOT WORKING RIGHT) AND TURNED THE CAR OFF IMMEDIATELY. CALLED TO GET IT TOWED AND TRIED TO TURN IT ON. IT SOUNDED LIKE THE ENGINE WAS CLUNKING SO I JUST STOPPED TRYING. AT THIS POINT THE HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP IS SAYING THE TIMING CHAIN IS MESSED UP AND ENGINE FAILURE WHICH IS VERY VERY COMMON WITH THE TUCSON. HAD RIGHT ABOVE 67000 ON THE CAR.
DRIVING ALONG WITH ABOUT 77735 MILES ON THE ODOMETER. WHILE DRIVING TO ARIZONA BECAUSE MY MOTHER WAS IN SERIOUS CONDITION. (HAS PASSED AWAY AS OF THIS WRITING) THE ENGINE AND ENTIRE CAR SHOOK. THOUGHT I HAD HIT SOMETHING ON THE ROAD. LOOKED UNDERNEATH, NO DAMAGE AND THE CONNECTING ROD WAS KNOCKING. GOING 70 MPH MUST HAVE BROKE IT LOOSE AND SPUN THE BEARING. SPENT $850 TO RENT A U-HAUL TRAILER AND TRUCK TO TOW IT BACK FROM NEW MEXICO TO KANSAS. DROPPED THE OIL PAN AND METAL SHAVINGS EVERYWHERE IN THE PAN. I SEE THE SAME 2.4 LITER ENGINE IN OTHER KIA'S AND HYUNDAI'S ARE BEING REPLACED FOR THE SAME PROBLEM. WHY NOT THE TUCSON, I KNOW THERE AREN'T AS MANY OF THEM AS THE SANTA FE'S AND SONATA'S. BUT IT IS THE SAME EXACT ENGINE WITH THE SAME EXACT PROBLEM. I WAS RUNNING QUAKER STATE FULL SYNTHETIC OIL WITH A MOBIL ONE FILTER...OIL WAS FULL WITH ABOUT 5700 MILES ON IT. I NEVER IN MY LIFE HAVE HAD AND ENGINE FAILURE AS I MAINTAIN MY VEHICLES WELL. I BOUGHT IT WITH 69,000 ON IT 10 MONTHS AGO AND STILL OWE $2500. I'M SURE I WILL NO LONGER BE A HYUNDAI CUSTOMER UNLESS SOMETHING GOOD COMES OUT OF THIS.....SURE IT WON'T! JUST WANTED A NICE CAR TO RETIRE WITH, SHOULD HAVE STUCK WITH THE HONDA CR-V I HAD BEFORE THIS.
ON 05/30/18, WHEN ARRIVING ON CAMPUS GROUNDS AT MY PLACE OF EMPLOYMENT MY VEHICLE STARTED MAKING CLANKING NOISES, THE ENGINE LIGHT TURNED ON, AND THE VEHICLE STARTED TO DECELERATE. WHEN I PARKED IT, IT STALLED AND DIED IN THE SPOT. I CONTACTED THE DEALERSHIP AND HAD IT TOWED TO THEM. AFTER 2 DAYS, THE DEALERSHIP INFORMED THE ENGINE NEED TO BE REPLACED AND HYUNDAI WAS GOING TO PAY FOR IT. THE DEALERSHIP INFORMED ME I HAD TO PAY $5/DAY FOR A RENTAL VEHICLE OF THEIR CHOOSING. SINCE THAT DAY, I HAVE NOT RECEIVED ANY INFORMATION REGARDING MY VEHICLE AND I AM STILL IN THE RENTAL. THE VEHICLE IS STILL UNDER WARRANTY AND WHEN I QUESTIONED THE THE WARRANTY, THE DEALERSHIP WOULD NOT PROVIDE ME A COPY OF IT.

I WAS TOLD THE CAR NEEDS A NEW ENGINE. I AM REPORTING THIS BECAUSE I READ A STORY THAT SENATOR BEN NELSON OF FLORIDA HAS MADE AN INQUIRY ABOUT SIMILAR EVENTS WITH THIS MODEL SUV IN FLORIDA. CATASTROPHIC ENGINE FAILURE ON A 2012 TUCSON WITH ONLY 80K MILES. THE VEHICLE WAS REGULARLY SERVICED. HEARD A FAINT TICKING COMING FROM THE ENGINE WHILE DRIVING, AND LATER THAT DAY, THE ENGINE BLEW. APPARENTLY THE THETA 2 ENGINE THE VEHICLE USES IS KNOWN FOR FAILURE, BUT THE HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO CLAIMED ONLY ABOUT 2% OF THESE CARS WERE AFFECTED, AND I WAS JUST "UNLUCKY". NO WARNING LIGHTS, NOTHING. WAS ON THE INTERSTATE DURING RUSH HOUR AT THE TIME OF THE INCIDENT, AND WAS ALMOST HIT BY MULTIPLE VEHICLES BECAUSE OF THIS.

THE VEHICLE WAS THEN TOWED TO UNIVERSAL HYUNDAI (12801 S ORANGE BLOSSOM TRAIL, ORLANDO, FL 32837, (321) 418-3733) TO BE DIAGNOSED. THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE ENGINE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 60,000.
WHILE DRIVING ON THE INTERSTATE AT SPEEDS OF 70 MPH THE ENGINE SEIZED AND THREW A ROD, DESPITE FOLLOWING THE PROSCRIBED MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE. THIS CAUSED THE ENTIRE ENGINE TO BLOW, SMOKE, AND LEAK OIL ALL OVER THE HIGHWAY. THIS WAS INCREDIBLY DANGEROUS NOT ONLY TO US WHO WERE IN THE VEHICLE, BUT SURROUNDING VEHICLES AS WELL, AS WERE TRAVELLING ON A BUSY INTERSTATE ON CHRISTMAS DAY. WE WERE VERY LUCKY JUST TO BE ABLE TO MAKE IT TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD BEFORE THE VEHICLE ENTIRELY SHUT DOWN AND STOPPED MOVING. THIS IS THE SAME EXACT ENGINE THAT HAS BEEN RECALLED BY HYUNDAI, JUST IN A DIFFERENT MODEL.
HYUNDAI TUCSON THETA-II ENGINE FAILURE. MY TUCSON EXPERIENCED SUDDEN ONSET OIL PROBLEMS OVERNIGHT. I PARKED THE CAR ON THURSDAY NIGHT IN MY DRIVEWAY, EVERYTHING WAS FINE. FRIDAY MORNING WHEN I TURNED IT ON THE OIL LIGHT WAS ON. I CONFIRMED I WAS NOT SCHEDULED FOR AN OIL CHANGE FOR ANOTHER 2000 MILES BUT ADDED A QUART OF OIL TO BE SAFE AND THE LIGHT WENT OFF. SHORTLY AFTER AS I WAS DRIVING TO WORK THE ENGINE STARTS TICKING AND LOSING POWER AND GETS WORSE THE FARTHER I DRIVE. I AND WAS 700 MILES PAST THE EXTENDED 100,000 BUMPER TO BUMPER WARRANTY I PURCHASED WHEN I BOUGHT THE CAR NEW. THE DEALER'S MECHANIC SAID THE RODS FAILED WHICH CAUSED ENGINE FAILURE. THIS IS THE SAME PROBLEM AS DESCRIBED IN THE HYUNDA AND KIA ENGINE RECALL, HOWEVER THE TUCSON MODEL IS NOT INCLUDED AS PART OF THE RECALL. THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT WOULD NOT ASSIST ME IN ANY WAY OTHER THAN OFFERING TO SELL ME A USED ENGINE WITH 57,000 MILES ON IT FOR $6000.
WHILE TRAVELING ON THE HIGHWAY MY HUSBAND AND I STARTED TO HEAR A LOUD CLANKING NOISE UNDER OUR HOOD. WE BARELY MADE IT OFF THE NEXT EXIT, WITH VEHICLES HAVING TO QUICKLY GO AROUND US BECAUSE OUR SPEED WAS SLOWING DOWN AND THEN VEHICLE DIED, WE WERE STRANDED IN THE HEAT ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD WITH OUR DOGS. AFTER SPEAKING WITH HYUNDAI CORPORATE THEY TOLD US TO HAVE IT TOWED TO THE NEAREST HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP. WE DID AND A CASE WAS OPENED WITH HYUNDAI. IT WAS DIAGNOSED AT THE HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP AS PREMATURE ENGINE FAILURE DUE TO NO FAULT OF OURS BUT THE WARRANTY DEPARTMENT DENIED OUR CLAIM BECAUSE WE ARE SECOND OWNERS. THE ENGINE IN OUR CAR HAS BEEN RECALLED IN OTHER MODELS BUT HYUNDAI IS TRYING TO HIDE THE FACT THAT IT EXTENDS TO THE TUCSON. IT IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS TO NOT RECALL AND INFORM ALL HYUNDAI OWNERS WITH THIS PARTICULAR ENGINE TO TAKE IT IN FOR REPAIR IMMEDIATELY! THE ENGINE WILL FAIL WITH NO WARNING LIGHTS AND FAST, USUALLY ON THE HIGHWAY. IT FAILS AT VERY LOW MILES WHEN YOU WOULD LEAST EXPECT AN ENGINE TO FAIL. IT IS A HUGE SAFETY CONCERN FOR THE OWNERS AND OTHER DRIVERS ON THE ROAD.

NISSAN OF HAWTHORNE DEALER LOCATED AT 1060 GOFFLE RD, HAWTHORNE, NJ WAS CONTACTED AND INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT THEY WOULD START AN INVESTIGATION. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT CONTACTED. ISSUE SEEMS CONSISTENT WITH OTHER COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS MAKE/MODEL AND IN LINE WITH THE ISSUES FROM THE RECENT ENGINE RECALLS ON SANTE FE AND SONATA MODELS. CAR ONLY HAS 82K MILES AND IS NOW COMPLETE JUNK. HYUNDAI WON'T HELP.

JUST HAD CAR SERVICES AT HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP TWO WEEKS AGO WITH OIL CHANGE AND RUST RECALL ALONG WITH MULTIPOINT INSPECTION. FRIDAY 6/10/2017 WAS DRIVING HOME TURNING LEFT IN A BUSY INTERSECTION AND HEAR A LOUD PING PING FROM UNDER THE HOOD, AND I CAN NO LONGER ACCELERATE. CARS ARE HOOKING BEHIND ME AS I TURN ON MY HAZARDS AND AM ABLE TO FINALLY COAST TO THE SIDE STREET AND TURN OFF THE CAR. I WAS ALMOST REAR ENDED TWICE. TOOK THE CAR INTO THE DEALER. THEY BROKE DOWN THE ENGINE AND SAID THAT THEY ENGINE SEIZED UP AND THE BEARINGS HAD METAL SHAVING ALL OVER DOWN TO THE OIL PAN. THEY SAID THIS LOOKED TO BE CONSISTENT WITH WHAT THEY HAVE BEEN SEEING IN THE RECALLED 2.4 L ENGINES. THEY FILED A CLAIM WITH HYUNDAI SINCE I AM THE SECOND OWNER THE ARE DECLINING THE REPAIR REQUEST BECAUSE I AM THE SECOND OWNER AND HAVE 80,000 MILES. SO MUCH FOR HELPING YOUR CUSTOMER THAT WAS ALMOST KILLS BECAUSE OF ENGINE FAILURE

LAST WEEK, WHILE DRIVING ON A HIGHWAY IN RURAL NEVADA,IN A PASSING ZONE, ON A SHALLOW UPHILL CURVE, ATTEMPTED TO PASS A TRASH TRUCK,ACCELERATED TO ABOUT 65 MPH, AND JUST AS WE MORE OR LESS ABEAM THE TRUCK, THE ENGINE SUDDENLY QUIT. WE HAD ENOUGH MOMENTUM WAS ABLE TO COMPLETE PASS AND IMMEDIATELY PULL OVER TO SIDE. HAD THERE BEEN ONCOMING TRAFFIC, THAT WAS JUDGED TO BE FAR ENOUGH DISTANCE TO SAFELY PASS, IT IS POSSIBLE THAT WITH THE ENGINE QUITTING, COULD HAVE RESULTED IN A HEAD ON COLLISION. THE BATTERY AND ALTERNATOR BOTH TESTED OK. THE OIL LEVEL WAS FULL. ALL FACTORY RECOMMENDED MAINTENANCE HAD BEEN COMPLIED WITH. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED BACK TO CARSON CITY( ABOUT 80 MILES). THE DEALER SAID THE ENGINE 'SEIZED', CAUSE UNKNOWN, WITHOUT A TEARDOWN,

I WAS UNABLE TO TURN IGNITION OVER, OIL AND ENGINE CAUTION LIGHTS WERE ON. NO VISIBLE ISSUES OR LEAKS FROM ENGINE. ONE OWNER VEHICLE, TRAVELED MOSTLY HIGHWAY MILES, HAD REGULAR MAINTENANCE FROM DEALER SHIP WHERE PURCHASED FROM, AND ONLY HAD 70776 MILES ON A 2012 MODEL.
WHILE DRIVING ON THE I90 THROUGH SNOQUALMIE PASS IN WASHINGTON, MOVED TO OVERTAKE ANOTHER VEHICLE IN THE OVERTAKING LANE. BRAND NEW CAR- A FEW DAYS AFTER PURCHASING AND DRIVING THE CAR, NOTICED CAR WAS NOT DRIVING RIGHT. SEVERAL SYMPTOMS BECAME NOTICEABLE. CAR WOULD JERK WHEN ACCELERATING AND BRAKING. THE MECHANICS FELT THE PROBLEMS I EXPLAINED ABOVE AND SAID SOMETHING WAS WRONG, NOW HAD TO FIGURE OUT WHAT EXACTLY. SEVERAL TESTS WERE DONE ON THE CAR BUT NOTHING SHOWED UP ON ELECTRICAL GRID. SERVICE HAD TO CALL A HIGHER TECH OUT IN CALIFORNIA TO SEE WHAT TO DO NEXT. CALIFORNIA TECH MADE THEM RUN SEVERAL TESTS, ALL THIS TOOK MORE THEN 2 WEEKS UNTIL THEY FINALLY FIGURED OUT THAT THE ENGINES THROTTLE ASSY WAS DEFECTIVE AND NOT FUNCTIONING PROPERLY. THEY SAID THAT THIS ALSO CAUSED THE SENSOR TO MALFUNCTION. THEY REPLACED THE THROTTLE ASSY AND CLAIM THE CAR IS REPAIRED. NO LONGER TRUST CAR IS SAFE TO DRIVE DUE TO THE ELECTRICAL AND ENGINE DEFECTS THAT WHERE FOUND AFTER THE ORIGINAL INSPECTIONS BY THE MANUFACTURE AND THE DEALERSHIP FAILED TO FIND THESE DEFECTS WITH THE CAR AND SOLD IT. *TR
