The contact owns a 2012 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the contact became aware of smoke coming from the engine compartment. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact stated that there was an abnormal gasoline odor coming from the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was determined that the fuel pump control module had failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a case was opened. The failure mileage was approximately 126,561.
On July 8th 2024 I was driving my already troubled 2012 Hyundai Sonata when I started to smell strong odor of unburnt gasoline which immediately had my red flags go up, I safely pulled off the roadway and opened the hood and the fumes got stronger and stronger, I removed the plastic top engine cover to discover the foam on the underside of the plastic cover was sopping wet with gasoline, and witnessed what appears to be some sort of line or horse carrying fuel to the high pressure fuel pump squirting out gasoline right on to the hot manifold which immediately panicked me and i put tue plastic engine cover back over the top of the squirting fuel line. It comes directly off of the front of the fuel pump with a quick connect plastic hose that seems to have become brittle from the constant heat cool cycles of the engine compartment. I immediately unplugged the car battery negative and was able to gather some disposable towels I had handy in the trunk and was able to place them atop the squirting fuel line and below it as well. But the entire area that houses the spark plugs was full of gasoline and far too much fuel for me to mop up with the towels I had on hand. This is very concerning to me that a plastic hose and connector would be used in such a scenario seeing as how common sense would tell you that over time plastic will become brittle especially with a heating cooling cycle, and I find it even more disturbing that upon contacting the dealership that I was informed that my vehicle was not included in the said faulty fuel line which has led to dangerous thermal events ending in complete loss of vehicle and potential for life loss. So in addition to the now faulty replacement engine that is in my vehicle, along with the non functioning turbo system, and the melted tail light housings, I now have to pay out of pocket to correct a mistake of Hyundai, I have lost total faith in the brand and in my particular vehicle. I do not feel safe driving it and it will sit
The contact owns a 2012 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated while driving 60 MPH, the vehicle stalled with the key symbol warning light displayed. The contact pulled over to the side of the highway and was able to use a trailer to tow the vehicle to the residence. Neither the dealer nor the manufacturer was notified of the failure. Upon investigation, the contact discovered NHTSA Campaign Number: 18V934000 (Engine, Fuel System, Gasoline) which she linked to the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 180,000.
When decelerating, the vehicle will have a hard down shift or it feels like it accelerates with your foot on the brake after a hard downshift. Once you have come to a complete stop and you accelerate into traffic, it bogs down and does not move forward. It is dangerous to merge into traffic on a city street or in the highway. Our mechanic and the dealer cannot find anything. It is not predictable but it is dangerous to drive.
There was a complaint on your site that is exactly what happened to my car. While driving with foot on accelerator, acceleration/ current speed will randomly just stop. 1-1- Once i fully release the accelerator and then reengage the accelerator problem goes away. This is very random as to when it happens, and will happen multiple times in a row some times... and other times happens once and doesn't the rest of the trip. Safety is put at risk. There's only 38,000 miles on this vehicle. My mechanic can't find it because it's not doing it. The engine light doesn't come on and neither does a code. It does this on a freeway and the streets. This is extremely scary and dangerous.
The VIN number for this car is [XXX]. "Check engine" light was on and the car could not pass the inspection. We took the car to the mechanics and they found out " leak from fuel pump module" (please refer to the mechanics report for details) . Due to the safety concern, we have to fix it right away out of our own pocket. This particular VIN number is not included in the MHTSA ID: 18V934000. I purchased the car 9/1/21. 4 months ago I repaired an issue with the fuel pump and fuel rail. Now it's doing the same thing. Code P0087. I looked up to see if there were any recalls and there aren't any OPEN recalls; however the recall #180 is the issue I am having with my car. Would this be covered under the #180 recall?
Vehicle caught on Fire.
The contact owns a 2012 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that after fully refilling the gas tank at the gas station, and driving at 40-55 MPH, he smelled a strong gasoline odor inside the vehicle. There were no warning lights illuminated. The contact was able to continue to drive the vehicle. Upon investigating the failure, the contact noticed that each time he fully refilled the gas tank, in addition to the smell, the vehicle would shudder for 3-5 min while driving. Additionally, the contact noticed that gas was leaking onto the driver's side rear wheel well whenever the gas tank was fully refilled. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed with evap failure. The dealer informed the contact to check his gas cap; however, the contact stated that the fuel cap was new and was a manufacturer-approved gas cap. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that they could not assist as the VIN was not included in NHTSA Campaign Number: 20V121000 (Fuel System, Gasoline). The failure mileage was approximately 94,750.
The car hesitates when excelerating. The car has had this problem since I purchased the vehicle. I have reported to the Hyuandai dealership within in a few days of purchasing it. They told me it was normal. It has been in and out of the dealership many times and they finally told me ithey installed the knock sensor device which helped for a short time but it’s gotten worse. It hesitates so bad at times I almost got struck from the side because my car got stuck in the middle of the road because it wouldn’t go.
I started the car and immediately got a chiming sound with an error message "hybrid system warning! Safety stop and do not drive" brake light also came on. I put the in drive and Car would not accelerate past 15 mph and the brakes did not engage. I turned the car off and the message reset. Same issue occured about a month ago but the dealership could not replicate the problem.

AS I WAS PULLING OUT INTO TRAFFIC, THE THROTTLE WENT UNRESPONSIVE. I PUMPED THE ACCELERATOR THREE OR FOUR TIMES AND THE VEHICLE LURCHED FORWARD THEN BEGIN DRIVING NORMALLY. THERE WAS NO "CHECK ENGINE " OR OTHER WARNING. I TOOK THE CAR INTO THE DEALER AND THEY HOOKED IT TO A OBD AND DROVE IT, TO NO AVAIL. HAS THEREIN A ANY REPORT OF THIS PROBLEM BY OTHER OWENERS???

THIS WEEK MY VEHICLE EXPERIENCED A FUEL LINE CRACK WHERE THE LOW PRESSURE FUEL PUMP CONNECTS TO THE DIRECT INJECTION FUEL PUMP. THE SMELL OF GAS WAS EVIDENT WITHIN THE CABIN WHILE BOTH STATIONARY AND IN MOTION, AND I COULD SEE VAPOR RISING FROM THE PROXIMAL PORTION OF THE HOOD WHILE SITTING IN THE DRIVER'S SEAT. THE GAS LEAK COULD BE VISUALIZED UPON STARTING THE CAR. UPON OPENING THE HOOD, I NOTED THE GAS LEAK AROUND THE CRACKED PLASTIC CONNECTION. THE FUEL LINE WAS THE ORIGINAL GENUINE HYUNDAI PART. THE HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP REPLACED IT WITH A SUPERIOR (NON-PLASTIC) FUEL LINE. THE LACK OF QUALITY IN THE ORIGINAL FUEL LINE IS CONCERNING BECAUSE IT PLACED MY FAMILY DIRECTLY AT RISK TO EXPERIENCE A DANGEROUS AND POSSIBLY FATAL FIRE. IT APPEARS THAT THE HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP WAS ALSO AWARE OF THIS PROBLEM WITH THE ORIGINAL LINE WHICH IS WHY THEY REPLACED IT WITH A DIFFERENT PART. VEHICLE GAVE A WARNING THAT THE HYBRID SYSTEM FAILED AND TO SAFELY LEAVE THE ROAD AND STOP DRIVING. THERE WAS NO SHOULDER AND BEFORE I COULD LEAVE THE ROADWAY, THE VEHICLE LOST ALL POWER. NOT EVEN ENOUGH POWER FOR HAZARD LIGHTS.
I HAD TAKEN THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR A CLOCK SPRING RECALL. I PICKED THE VEHICLE UP AND THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WAS ON. I TOOK THE VEHICLE BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY INFORMED BY THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WAS CAUSED BY THE HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP FAILURE. THIS SEEMS TO BE A KNOW PROBLEM WITH THIS MAKE/MODEL/YR VEHICLE.
WAS DRIVING ON MAJOR STREET WITH NO WARNING THE VEHICLE DIED IN THE MIDDLE OF A MAJOR INTERSECTION. WE TRIED TO START THE VEHICLE AGAIN WITH NO LUCK. GAS HAND SHOWED WE HAD GAS IN THE VEHICLE, SO DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY THE CAR STALLED AND WOULD NOT START AGAIN. VEHICLE HAD TO BE TOWED HOME. NOT SURE IF THERE HAS BEEN A RECALL ON THE FUEL SYSTEM, HOWEVER THIS WAS A VERY SCARY AND DANGEROUS SITUATION. STALLED VEHICLE HAD TRAFFIC BACK UP ON VERY BUSY OVERPASS INTERSECTION. THE FUEL GAUGE HAS STOPPED WORKING CORRECTLY, IT JUMPS ALL AROUND IN MILEAGE. HAVE NO IDEA HOW MUCH IS IN THE GAS TANK. HAVE TO FILL AFTER I GO 300 OR SO MILES JUST TO BE SAFE. THE FUEL MILEAGE INDICATOR WILL GO FROM HIGH 360 TO 47 MILES LEFT AND EVERYWHERE IN BETWEEN, THE CAR CAN BE SITTING AT A STOP LIGHT OR MOVING, MAKES NO DIFFERENCE
MY FUEL GAUGE IS NO LONGER READING THE FUEL LEVEL. I FILL MY TANK TO FULL AND IT TELL ME THAT I AM EMPTY. FUEL INDICATOR COMES ON AND FUEL GAUGE GOES UP AND DOWN. I HAVE TO MANUALLY CALCULATE AND ESTIMATE HOW MUCH FUEL I HAVE LEFT. THIS IS A COMMON ISSUE ON SONATA'S AS THERE ARE MANY OTHERS REPORTING AND IS NOT A RECALL YET.
AFTER MY ENGINE SHORT BLOCK WAS REPLACED THE CAR STARTED TO HAVE ACCELERATION PROBLEMS AND NEXT IS STARTING TO SMELL LIKE ROTTEN EGGS. THE SMELL STARTS WHEN YOU START UP THE CAR COMES THROUGH THE AIR VENTS AND AFTER YOU PARK THE CAR TO STAY AT SMELL STAYS IN THE CAR FOR LEAST 5 HOURS LATER. WHILE DRIVING OR STATIONARY THE GAS HAND GOES DOWN FROM 367 TO 0, ----- WHEN I KNOW THERE IS GAS IN THE CAR, SOMETIMES THE GAS HAND WILL COME BACK UP TO WHERE IT BELONGS AND WHEN IT DOES NOT COME BACK AND YOU KEEP ON DRIVING THE ENGINE LIGHT COMES ON. ONCE YOU FILL THE CAR BACK UP ABOUT $4 WORTH THAT IS ALL IT WILL TAKE DRIVE THE CAR FOR ABOUT AN HOUR THE ENGINE LIGHT GOES OUT, BUT THE GAS HAND STILL WILL GO TO EMPTY AFTER YOU REACH ABOUT 300 GAS TO EMPTY.
THE FUEL GAGE DOES NOT REGISTER THEN IT ACTS ERRATICALLY - GOING FROM FULL TO EMPYT TO 1/2 TANK THEN REMAINS ON EMPTY - ALL THIS WITHIN 20 MIN. OF FILLING UP THE TANK. I HAVE READ FORUMS IT IS NOT LIMITED TO MY CAR. THERE ARE MANY HYUNDAI OWNERS THAT HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE FAILURE WAS INTERMITTENT. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE AND PROVIDED CASE NUMBER: 11389896. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 12,000.
THE ELECTRONIC FUEL GAUGE DOES NOT GO BELOW TWO BARS. I WAS IN MOTION ON A HIGHWAY STREET AND THE CAR STALLED. I DID NOT KNOW WHAT WAS WRONG. THE TOW TRUCK DRIVER PUT ONE GALLON OF GAS AND THE CAR STARTED UP AGAIN. I NOW FILL UP MY CAR WAY BEFORE IT GETS DOWN TO TWO BARS ON THE GAS GAUGE.

THE FIRE DEPARTMENT WAS NOTIFIED AND INFORMED THE CONTACT NOT TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE WITHOUT HAVING IT INSPECTED. A FIRE REPORT WAS FILED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO ROUND ROCK HYUNDAI (2405 N INTERSTATE HWY, 35 ROUND ROCK, TX 78665, 512-904-6400) WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE HIGH FUEL PUMP AND FUEL LINE WERE FRACTURED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT THE VEHICLE WOULD BE REPAIRED WITH NO ADDITIONAL CHARGES. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 100,000. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE.
WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS STATIONARY (IDLE AT A STOPLIGHT), THE VEHICLE TURNED OFF WITHOUT WARNING. THE VEHICLE THEN HAD DIFFICULTY STARTING AFTER THE INCIDENT - LEAVING MY CAR SITTING IDLE IN A BUSY INTERSECTION. IN ADDITION, DUE TO THE SAME MECHANICAL ERROR, MY CAR WHILE IN MOTION (ON A HIGHWAY GOING ABOUT 65MPH), THE CAR HAD DIFFICULTY MAINTAINING ENGINE POWER AND "SPUTTERED" SEVERAL TIMES BEFORE RESUMING NORMAL PERFORMANCE. THIS RESULTED IN MY CAR MOVING AT SPEEDS THAT WERE UNDER THE POSTED SPEED LIMIT, CAUSING VEHICLES BEHIND ME TO HAVE TO BRAKE QUICKLY TO AVOID REAR-ENDING ME. FINALLY, AGAIN DUE TO THE SAME ISSUE, THE CAR HAD DIFFICULTY STARTING (WHILE NOT IN MOTION).
WHILE IN MOTION AT LOW SPEEDS, THE CAR FAILED TO ACCELERATE AND THE ENGINE PERFORMANCE WAS EXTREMELY POOR. AFTER SLOWLY ACCELERATING, THE CAR WOULD THEN "SPUTTER" AND THE ENGINE WOULD LOSE POWER (WHILE THE CAR WAS IN MOTION), CAUSING THE CAR TO NEARLY STOP ON THE ROAD WITHOUT WARNING. THIS CAUSED TRAFFIC TO BACK UP ON THE ROAD, AND FORCED CARS BEHIND MY VEHICLE TO SLAM ON THEIR BRAKES SO AS NOT TO REAR-END MY VEHICLE.
ON INTERSTATE DRIVING AND CAR LOST POWER WITH NO WARNING.
MY CODE CHECK AT A GOODYEAR DEALER SHOWED CODE P0087, A PROBLEM ASSOCIATED WITH THE FUEL DELIVERY SYSTEM IN MY SONATA. THE CAR LOSES POWER WHEN DRIVING BY NOT ACCEPTING GAS TO INCREASE THE SPEED. THE GOODYEAR DEALER TOLD ME HE HAS SEEN THIS PROBLEM ON NUMEROUS HYUNDAIS.
HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP ON TOP OF ENGINE LEAKED FUEL AND HAD TO BE REPLACED. COULD HAVE CAUSED FIRE. CAR HAS 48,000 MILES. ENGINE LIGHT ON DASH CAME UP AND DID NOT GO OFF. CAR IN DRIVEWAY WHEN DISCOVERED CAR LACKED POWER AND FELT LIKE ENGINE WAS STUTTERING. GAVE A CODE OF PO008 ON DIAGNOSTIC TOOL.
DRIVING AND VEHICLE LOST POWER. COULD PUSH ACCELERATOR TO THE FLOOR AND THERE WAS NO RESPONSE. HAPPENED WHILE DRIVING STRAIGHT AT HIGHWAY SPEED AND THE CAR REMAINED RUNNING BUT NO ACCELERATOR RESPONSE. PULLED TO THE SHOULDER AND THE CAR SPUTTERED AND ACCELERATION CONTROL RETURNED BUT CAR WAS RUNNING VERY POORLY AND ACCELERATION CONTROL CAME AND WENT. OBD2 CODE P0087 WAS READ WHEN CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON THE NEXT DAY WHEN TRYING TO START THE VEHICLE. ALL STARTS SINCE THE INCIDENT HAVE BEEN HARD STARTS. THE WASTEGATE ACTUATOR SENSOR ROD RETAINER CLIP WAS FOUND TO BE MISSING, IT WAS REPLACED AND THE SENSOR WAS TESTED TO ENSURE CORRECT VOLTAGE (BETWEEN 3.9 AND 4.1). OBD2 CODE WAS CLEARED AND CAR RAN OK FOR A TEST DRIVE BUT THE FOLLOWING DAY, ALL SYMPTOMS HAD RETURNED AND WE AGAIN EXPERIENCED NO ACCELERATOR RESPONSE. RETEST OF THE WASTEGATE ACTUATOR INDICATED THE THE VOLTAGE WAS STILL IN RANGE. THIS IS A DANGEROUS CONDITION BECAUSE IT RESULTS IN COMPLETE LOSS OF ACCELERATOR CONTROL.
I HAVE THE HYUNDIA 2012 2.0T. ON 2 DESPERATE OCCASIONS THE CAR HAS FILLED UP WITH GAS FUMES. I FILLED UP THE GAS TANK AND STARTED DRIVING FROM LAS VEGAS TO LAUGHLIN. IT WAS OVER 105 DEGREES , WHICH IT IS OFTEN IN THE DESERT AREAS. ABOUT 20 MINS INTO THE DRIVE MY WIFE ASKED ME DO YOU SMELL THAT IT SMELLS LIKE GAS AGAIN. WE ALREADY HAD THE CAR SERVICED FOR TO OTHER RECALLS. I SAID YES SO WE TURNED THE AIR CONDITIONER UP . IT GOT WORSE AS WE DROVE . OUR EYESVSTARTED TEARING UP IT WAS STARTING TO GET HARD TO BREATH SO I PULLED OVER AND TOLD MY WIFE TO GET OUT AND STAND AWAY FROM THE CAR. I OPENED THE HIS SLOWLY TO SEE IF THERE WAS A LEAK OR FIRE. THERE WAS NONE SO WE STAED DRIVING AGAIN AND IT PROCEEDED TO GET WORSE WE OPENED THE SUN ROOF AND ALL THE WINDOWS. THEN WE STOPPED IN THE CITY OF SEARCHLIGHT TO WALK IT OFF. HONEST TO GOD THERE WAS ANOTHER NEWER SONATA 2014T PARKED NEXT TO US WHEN WE CAME OUT. HE ASKED US HOW WE LIKE OUR CAR . I TOLD HIM I LOVE IT BUT WE WERE HAVING GAS FUMES IN THE CAR. HE SAID THAT HE JUST LEFT LAUGHLIN ABOUT 30 MINS AGO AND THAT IS THE REASON HE PULLED OVER. IT HAPPEN TO HIM A FEW TIMES BUT IT WAS TO HARD TO BREATHE AND HIS EYES STARTED HURTING. I SAID EXACTLY. IN WAS ABOUT 105 OUTSIDE NOW. I CALLED DEALER ,ABC HYUNDAI. THEY KNOW ABOUT THE PROBLEM ,IT A GAS EXHAUST VENTILATION PROBLEM. THERE IS NOT A RECALL YET SO I HAVE TO PAY FOR IT. I SAID WHAT IT'S $135 TO START. SO I CALLED BOTH CENTENNIAL HYUNDAI AND LAS VEGAS HYUNDAI. THEY BOTH KNOW ABOUT THE PROBLEM . FIRST IS IT TOXIC ???? NEXT WHEN SOMEONE PASSES OUT OR DIES IS THAT WHEN A RECALL STARTS? ONE MORE THING THAT MAY BE A RECALL DUE TO SAFETY IF I LOCK MY CAR DOORS WITH THE REMOTE THEN THE REAR PASSENGER DOESN'T LOCK ALL THE WAY . SO I HAVE TO OPEN THE PASSENGER BEHIND THE DRIVER AND MANUALLY LOCK IT. THIS NOW TRIGGERS THE PASSENGER FRONT TO UNLOCK.
THE CAR SUDDENLY TURNED 'OFF', LOST PROPULSION AND CAME TO A STOP IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD. THE DASHBOARD GAS GAUGE SHOWED APPROXIMATELY ONE QUARTER OF A TANK OF GAS BUT IT TURNS OUT THE TANK WAS EMPTY. THE LIKELY CAUSE IS A DEFECTIVE GAUGE IN THE GAS TANK.
COMPLETE AND TOTAL MOTOR FAILURE WHILE DRIVING AT HIGHWAY SPEED. PREVIOUSLY NEEDED FUEL PUMP REPLACEMENT. CV JOINT (AXEL) FAILED PREMATURELY. *TR

I HAD A CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ON MY VEHICLE AND IT REVEALED AN ISSUE WITH THE HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP WHICH IS LOCATED IN THE ENGINE AREA. THIS IS NOT SOMETHING THAT SHOULD GO OUT THAT QUICKLY. APPARENTLY THIS IS A COMMON ISSUE WITH THIS VEHICLE AND THEY NEED TO RECALL THESE. *TR
3RD TIME THE EXHAUST FLAP HAS MALFUNCTIONED IN THE TURBO CHARGER. DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY AT A POSTED SPEED LIMIT AND THE CAR SUDDENLY LOSES ALL THE POWER AND SLOWS CONSIDERABLY WITH VEHICLES BEHIND AND BESIDE DOING POSTED SPEED LIMIT. CONCERNED ABOUT GETTING HIT BECAUSE OF SUDDEN LOSS OF POWER. REPAIRED ONCE, UNSTUCK ON ITS OWN THE SECOND TIME AND RECENTLY REQUIRED MAINTENANCE TO AGAIN ADJUST THE SYSTEM AND UNSTICK THE EXHAUST FLAP ON THE TURBO UNIT. CURRENTLY UNDER WARRANTY HOWEVER IS GOING TO BE A VERY EXPENSIVE REPAIR WHEN NOT AND ALSO CONCERNED ABOUT GETTING HIT FROM BEHIND WHEN THE SPEED AND POWER SUDDENLY DROPS AS WELL AS NOT BEING ABLE TO GET HOME WHEN IT HAPPENS AGAIN. *TR

ON 8-05-13 WHICH WAS NEXT HIGHWAY TRIP ON 440W IN STATEN ISLAND, NY WHILE ON CRUISE CONTROL AT 60MPH (FLOW OF TRAFFIC) CAR SUDDENLY MADE HIGH REVVING MOTOR NOISE, LURCHED FORWARD AND INCREASED SPEED TO 0VER 70MPH--BRAKE AGAIN DID MOT DISENGAGE CAR BUT HEAVY (VERY HEAVY) PRESSING ON DISENGAGE BUTTON SLOWED CAR. I RECENTLY BOUGHT A HYUNDAI SONATA SE 2.0T ON OCT 26 2012, EVER SINCE I BOUGHT IT, I'VE REALIZED THAT THE MPG THAT IT GIVES ME IS 17 NO MATTER IF I'M IN CITY OR HIGHWAY, WHILE MINIMAL ESTIMATES ARE 23 IN THE CITY. I'VE LOOKED ON HYUNDAI FORUMS AND IT SEEMS LIKE I'M NOT THE ONLY ONE WITH THIS ISSUE. CONTACT WITH THE DEALERS HAS BEEN NOTHING BUT A PAIN, THEY CONTINUE TO ARGUE WITH ME THAT, THAT IS IMPOSSIBLE AND WON'T EVEN TAKE A LOOK AT THE VEHICLE.
