NHTSA Campaign: 20V061000

Component: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:ANTILOCK/TRACTION CONTROL/ELECTRONIC LIMITED SLIP:CONTROL UNIT/MODULE

Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2007-2010 Elantra and 2009-2011 Elantra Touring vehicles. On February 21, 2020 Hyundai expanded the recall to include 46,425 model year 2007-2008 Entourage and 2007 Santa Fe vehicles. Moisture may enter the Anti-lock Brake (ABS) Module and result in an electrical short.

Risk: An electrical short within the ABS Module may cause an engine compartment fire, even when the car is turned off, increasing the risk of an injury.

Fix: Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will install a relay in the vehicle's main junction box to prevent the risk of an ABS short-circuit while the car is turned off, free of charge. The recall began April 2, 2020. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 188.

NHTSA Campaign: 15V100000

Component: STEERING:ELECTRIC POWER ASSIST SYSTEM

Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain model year 2008-2010 Elantra vehicles manufactured June 1, 2008, to April 30, 2010, and 2009-2010 Elantra Touring vehicles manufactured November 1, 2008, to April 30, 2010. The electronic power steering (EPS) electronic control unit (ECU) may sense a discrepancy in the steering input signals and, as a result, disable the steering power assist.

Risk: If power steering assist is lost, greater driver effort would be required to steer the vehicle at low speeds, increasing the risk of a crash.

Fix: Hyundai will verify the proper operation of the Electronic Power Steering (EPS) and update the EPS control unit, free of charge. The recall began April 14, 2015. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-671-3059. Hyundai's number for this recall is 127.

HYUNDAI IS RECALLING 65,000 MY 2008 ELANTRA VEHICLES WITH 2.0 LITER BETA ENGINES. THE FUEL PUMP MOTOR MAY NOT HAVE THE PROPER UNIFORM INTERNAL ELECTRICAL SURFACE CONTACT. THIS MAY CAUSE THE FUEL PUMP TO PRODUCE LESS PUMPING PRESSURE THAN REQUIRED TO SUPPLY THE FUEL INJECTION SYSTEM.

Risk: POOR ENGINE STARTING AND HESITATION MAY RESULT. OTHER ENGINE PERFORMANCE ISSUES MAY ALSO RESULT INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.

Fix: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE FUEL PUMP SUBASSEMBLY FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON SEPTEMBER 15, 2008. OWNERS MAY CONTACT HYUNDAI AT 1-800-633-5151.

Component: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:SENSOR/CONTROL MODULE-INACTIVE

HYUNDAI IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2007-2008 ELANTRA VEHICLES MANUFACTURED FROM JULY 14, 2006, THROUGH AUGUST 29, 2007. THE DRIVER'S SEAT TRACK POSITION SENSOR DETERMINES THE SEAT'S FORE AND AFT POSITION AND ALLOWS THE DRIVER'S FRONTAL AIR BAG TO DEPLOY AT THE PRESSURE APPROPRIATE FOR THAT SEATING POSITION, WITH A LOWER PRESSURE DEPLOYMENT IN THE MOST FORWARD SEATING POSITIONS. THE AIR BAG CONTROL MODULE MAY RECEIVE AN UNSTABLE ELECTRICAL SIGNAL FROM THE SEAT TRACK POSITION SENSOR SUCH THAT, IN A CRASH THAT REQUIRES DRIVER FRONTAL AIRBAG DEPLOYMENT, THE DRIVER'S AIRBAG MAY DEPLOY AT THE HIGHER PRESSURE THAN INTENDED IF THE SEAT WAS POSITION IN ONE OF THE FORWARD POSITIONS IN WHICH A LOWER PRESSURE DEPLOYMENT IS INTENDED.

Risk: A HIGHER PRESSURE DEPLOYMENT THAN INTENDED INCREASES THE RISK OF INJURY RESULTING FROM AIRBAG DEPLOYMENT.

Fix: DEALERS WILL REPROGRAM THE AIR BAG CONTROL MODULE FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL IS EXPECTING TO BEGIN DURING APRIL 2011. OWNERS MAY CONTACT HYUNDAI'S CUSTOMER ASSISTANCE CENTER AT 1-800-633-5151.

NHTSA Campaign: 13V113000

Component: EXTERIOR LIGHTING:BRAKE LIGHTS:SWITCH

Hyundai Motor Company (Hyundai) is recalling certain model year 2006-2009 Accent, model year 2007-2011 Azera, Sonata and Sante Fe,2006-2011 Tucson, 2009-2011 Elantra Touring, 2007-2010 Elantra, 2008-2011 Veracruz, 2009-2011 Genesis, 2010-2011 Genesis Coupe, 2007-2008 Entourage, and 2006-2008 Tiburon vehicles. Originally, in April 2013, Hyundai recalled 1,059,824 model year 2007-2009 Accent and Tucson, model year 2007-2010 Elantra, model year 2007-2011 Santa Fe, model year 2008-2009 Veracruz, model year 2010-2011 Genesis Coupe, and model year 2011 Sonata vehicles. In September 2013, Hyundai informed the agency that it was adding more vehicles to this campaign, representing an additional 652,512 units. The total number of vehicles being recalled is now 1,712,336. In the affected vehicles, the stop lamp switch may malfunction. A malfunctioning stop lamp switch may cause the brake lights to not illuminate when the brake pedal is depressed or may cause an inability to deactivate the cruise control by depressing the brake pedal. Additionally, a malfunctioning stop lamp switch may also result in intermittent operation of the push-button start feature, affect the operation of the brake transmission shift interlock feature, preventing the shifter from being moved out of the PARK position and cause the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) malfunction light to illuminate.

Risk: Failure to illuminate the stop lamps during braking or inability to disengage the cruise control could increase the risk of a crash. Additionally, when the ignition is in the 'ON' position, the transmission shifter may be able to be moved out of Park without first applying the brake. This may lead to unintentional movement of the car which may increase the risk of a crash.

Fix: Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will replace the stop lamp switch, free of charge. The safety recall began on April 22, 2013. Owners may contact Hyundai at 1-800-633-5151. Hyundai's recall campaign number is 110.

NHTSA Campaign: 11V143000

Component: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:SENSOR/CONTROL MODULE-INACTIVE

HYUNDAI IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2007-2009 ELANTRA VEHICLES MANUFACTURED FROM JULY 14, 2006, THROUGH NOVEMBER 1, 2008. THE FRONT PASSENGER SEATS IN THE VEHICLES CONTAIN A WEIGHT SENSOR DESIGNED TO DEACTIVATE THE RIGHT FRONTAL AIRBAG WHEN OCCUPANTS OF CERTAIN WEIGHTS OCCUPY THE SEAT. THE ELECTRICAL CONNECTOR FOR THE WEIGHT SENSOR IS LOCATED UNDER THE CENTER CONSOLE, BETWEEN THE FRONT SEATS. UNDER CERTAIN CIRCUMSTANCES THE CONNECTOR COULD BECOME CONTAMINATED AND MALFUNCTION SUCH THAT THE FRONT PASSENGER AIRBAG WILL DEPLOY REGARDLESS OF THE WEIGHT OF THE OCCUPANT.

Risk: THE FRONT PASSENGER AIR BAG COULD DEPLOY IN CRASHES IN WHICH IT SHOULD NOT DEPLOY, INCREASING THE RISK OF INJURY TO THE SEAT OCCUPANT FROM THE DEPLOYED AIR BAG.

Fix: DEALERS WILL INSTALL A PROTECTIVE COVER OVER THE WEIGHT CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM CONNECTOR TO PREVENT CONTAMINATION. THIS SERVICE WILL BE PERFORMED FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL IS EXPECTING TO BEGIN DURING APRIL 2011. OWNERS MAY CONTACT HYUNDAI'S CUSTOMER ASSISTANCE CENTER AT 1-800-633-5151.

CrashFiled: Nov 2023

During a front-end collision at 30 MPH involving your 2008 Hyundai Elantra, none of the airbags deployed despite the impact being significant enough to result in hospitalization and injuries to the driver. The vehicle was declared a total loss by the insurance company. Diagnosis would require a qualified technician to inspect the airbag system's sensors, wiring, and control modules to determine why the system failed to activate.

Your driver's side airbag deployed when you hit a pothole while making a U-turn in a parking lot, causing burns to your stomach and arms and damaging your shirt. The airbag appeared to deploy unexpectedly from a minor impact that didn't affect any other part of the vehicle. This issue may require inspection of the airbag sensor system and potentially replacement of the airbag unit.

Filed: Nov 2022

Your brake lines have rusted through, causing complete brake failure—you had to have the car towed. Your mechanic also found severe rust with a hole in the trailing arm or control arm, which is a critical suspension component. This is the second time this has happened to your car (the first was in 2017), and even though Hyundai addressed it under a previous settlement, the problem has returned despite the undercoating recall. You've contacted Hyundai and opened a support case; this needs immediate attention as brake and suspension failure creates a serious safety risk.

You ordered a rack and pinion steering assembly from RockAuto that was advertised as including both inner and outer tie rods, but the product only came with inner tie rods — you had to buy the outer tie rods separately. The company issued store credit for the missing parts instead of including them as described. This highlights a concern about accurate product descriptions for steering components.

Your brake warning light stayed on even after you parked your car and turned off the engine, starting about a week after the dealer completed a brake system recall repair. The brake lights remained illuminated continuously while the vehicle was off, which is unusual. This issue wasn't reported to the dealer or manufacturer, and the vehicle wasn't diagnosed or repaired for this problem. The repair will likely involve diagnosing the brake light circuit and potentially replacing a faulty brake light switch or wiring connector.

Filed: Nov 2025

While driving your car for less than an hour, you noticed smoke coming from under the hood, followed by the ABS, emergency brake, check engine, and EPS warning lights turning on. After pulling over and stopping, you observed fire falling from underneath the vehicle, and when you opened the hood, the engine on the driver's side was fully engulfed in flames that quickly spread across the engine bay—all within about 6 minutes of when the smoking started. The temperature gauge never indicated the engine was overheating. Addressing this will likely require a complete engine inspection and replacement, along with investigation of the electrical and fuel system components that may have caused the fire.

FireFiled: Aug 2025

Your engine bay caught fire because the ABS pump and module weren't turning off after the engine shut down. After Hyundai's recall 188 was completed to fix this issue, your ABS pump failed — likely because power was still being continuously applied to it when the car was off. The dealer's relay fix may not have been installed correctly, and the dealership is refusing to replace the damaged ABS pump under the recall or provide documentation of their work.

While turning into a neighborhood at low speed, your engine suddenly stalled in the middle of the road and the gas pedal stopped responding. After restarting, the car drove briefly before stalling again and won't start anymore. This could involve fuel system components, ignition system problems, or engine control issues that need professional diagnosis.

Your car seat's shell doesn't lock into place immediately when you rotate it — you have to try multiple times before it catches and secures. This issue has happened repeatedly, creating a safety concern since your son's car seat isn't properly secured until it finally locks. The car seat may need to be inspected and potentially replaced or repaired to ensure it locks reliably on the first try.

FireFiled: Mar 2023

Your car's engine continued running even after you removed the key from the ignition, and it took several attempts to get it to shut off. After driving about half a mile, you noticed a burning smell and saw smoke coming from the dashboard area near your lap, so you immediately turned off the car and got out. The engine kept running even with the key removed. This issue was serious enough that your insurance company towed the vehicle to the dealership for inspection and repair, and a fire was reported.

criticalPOWER TRAIN,ENGINE
Filed: Dec 2022

Your 2008 Elantra's engine developed a knocking noise that got worse as RPMs increased, along with reduced power, hesitation, vibration, and warning lights for check engine and low oil pressure. After a tune-up, ignition coil replacement, and sensor replacement didn't fix it, a mechanic found internal damage to the trigger wheel inside the crankshaft using a scope camera. The repair will likely require removing and rebuilding or replacing the crankshaft assembly.

Filed: Jun 2025

Your car's undercarriage has extensive rust damage affecting the suspension, frame, and brakes — far more than the three repair sections Hyundai's recall program covers. You've had to pay for multiple repairs over the past 4 years, and you weren't aware of this known corrosion issue when you purchased the vehicle 17 years ago. The fix will likely involve inspection and replacement of rusted suspension components, frame reinforcement, and brake system parts affected by corrosion.

Filed: Jun 2024

When you start your car, the ABS light, emergency brake light, and EPS (Electronic Power Steering) light all stay on in your dashboard. Filed: Sep 2023

Your brake lights aren't working properly — you received a citation and discovered there was a safety recall on the brake light switch that was closed in 2013 but apparently never completed on your car. Even after replacing the brake light switch and all bulbs yourself, the brake lights still don't work, and now your rear window light won't turn on either. The issue started with just the right side brake light failing, then progressed to the lights staying on by themselves. This is a safety hazard that will likely result in another citation and needs professional electrical diagnosis to identify what's preventing the brake lights from functioning.

Engine And Engine Cooling1 issue
highENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
Filed: Jul 2023

Your car stalls at traffic stops when the engine RPMs drop very low, and you notice white smoke and coolant leaking underneath. This happens repeatedly over several months without any warning lights appearing on your dashboard. Two independent mechanics couldn't identify the cause, suggesting a potential coolant system failure or engine cooling problem that may require professional diagnostics to locate the leak source and repair the cooling system.

NHTSA #: 11530639

Filed: Oct 2022

Your car's ABS (anti-lock braking) system locked up while driving, and you noticed smoking in the parking lot along with a high-pitched winding noise when starting the engine. Both the parking brake and ABS warning lights came on. The dealer was unable to diagnose or repair the issue. The problem occurred at around 200,000 miles.
