NHTSA Campaign: 18V267000

Component: EQUIPMENT

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2009-2014 Chevrolet Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD, 2009 GMC Topkick 5000, 6000, 7000 and 8000 Series and Isuzu F Series, and 2009-2018 Chevrolet Express, and GMC Savana vehicles, equipped with certain Plastic-Handle Fire Extinguishers or Push Button 'Pindicator' Fire Extinguishers. These extinguishers may become clogged, preventing the extinguisher from discharging as expected or requiring excessive force to activate the extinguisher. Additionally, in certain models, the nozzle may detach from the valve assembly with enough force that it could cause injury and also render the product inoperable. For a full list of the affected fire extinguisher models visit: https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/2017/RMISC-17E062-5427.pdf

Risk: In the event of a fire, if the fire extinguisher does not function properly, it can increase the risk of injury.

Fix: GM will notify owners, instructing them to contact Kidde to get a replacement fire extinguisher, free of charge. The recall began June 11, 2018. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782, and Isuzu customer service at 1-866-441-9638. GM's number for this recall is 18146.

These vehicles are equipped with non-desiccated passenger frontal inflators containing phase-stabilized ammonium nitrate (PSAN) propellant. These inflators may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to high absolute humidity, high temperatures, and high temperature cycling.

Risk: An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants, resulting in serious injury or death.

Fix: GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the front passenger air bag inflator with an alternate one, free of charge. Interim letters notifying owners of the safety risk were mailed on February 25, 2021. Second notification letters will be mailed once the remedy is available. Owner notification letters were mailed to 40 VIN owners on May 11, 2021. A second owner notification letter was mailed to all other owners on January 24, 2022. Your truck stalled while backing up a trailer, and when you restarted it, you heard a loud lifter clatter (knocking sound) from the engine. Your oil level and pressure were normal and the engine wasn't overheating, so the issue appears to be a faulty valve lifter. The owner reports this is a known problem with GM's 5.3L engines equipped with the AFM (Active Fuel Management) system. Fixing this typically requires removing and replacing the faulty lifter or lifters, which can be costly.

Your truck has lost power while driving at various speeds on several occasions, causing it to veer to the side of the road before restarting. The check engine light comes on when this happens. The dealer was unable to reproduce the problem during multiple visits, so no repair was completed. This issue started around 100,000 miles.

NHTSA #: 11549542

Your engine's fuel management lifter springs have broken, causing the engine to miss (skip) and run very roughly at idle. This is a mechanical issue inside the engine that's affecting how it runs smoothly. Fixing this will likely require opening up the engine to replace the broken valve lifter springs.

During an oil change, you were told that your truck's frame has severe rust and corrosion, with a risk of cracking in half. You've discovered that GM appears to be aware of this widespread frame rot issue. This is a structural integrity problem that requires professional inspection and likely frame repair or replacement.

Your vehicle's rear subframe has become detached from the frame due to rust damage, causing it to fail a vehicle inspection. This issue appears to be related to exposure to snow and salt, particularly from using undercarriage wash services. The repair will likely involve replacing the rusted subframe or reinforcing the attachment points to secure it back to the vehicle frame.

You're noticing rust appearing on your roof near the windshield, even though your truck is in excellent condition with no accidents or damage history. This premature rusting could eventually spread and allow water to leak into the cabin of your vehicle. The repair will likely involve rust removal, repainting, and possibly roof panel replacement depending on how deep the rust has penetrated.

Your truck's frame has become severely rusted and cracked after just one year of ownership. You've noticed this appears to be a widespread issue affecting other similar trucks from the same manufacturer. The frame deterioration may require professional inspection and repair to ensure structural integrity.

Filed: Sep 2024

You discovered rust that has eaten through your truck's frame near the gas tank. You were told GM issued a memo to dealers about frames not being properly coated, and that dealers should repair this if customers noticed it. Despite regular dealer service and undercoating, your frame has rusted severely and you've been told it's unsafe and can't be repaired. GM has refused to address the issue even though they knew about the coating problem, which is concerning since you tow a travel trailer and frame failure could create a serious safety hazard.

NHTSA #: 11613418

Filed: Sep 2024

Your truck's frame has developed significant rust and corrosion, with holes rusted completely through the metal in some areas. This creates a potential safety concern because the frame is compromised. Addressing this typically requires professional rust repair or frame replacement, depending on the extent of the damage.

Filed: Dec 2023

The rear crossmembers of your truck's frame have rusted away and broken free from the frame rails, leaving the rear suspension and gas tank supported only by the leaf spring mounts. This rust is unusually severe compared to other parts of the frame and undercarriage. This is a serious structural issue that needs immediate professional inspection and repair to ensure safe operation.

Your truck's left front frame rail has developed severe rust (perforating corrosion) and failed a state inspection. An independent inspector warned that the structural damage could cause your left front suspension to collapse, making the vehicle unsafe to drive despite low mileage and good overall condition. Fixing this will likely require welding or frame rail replacement by a professional shop, which is a major structural repair.

The frame on the left side of your vehicle, in the area between the frame rail and fuel tank, has failed and cracked. For a well-maintained, garaged vehicle that doesn't drive in bad weather, this type of structural damage shouldn't occur at 10 years old. Fixing this will likely require professional frame repair or replacement of the damaged section.
