Rear hatch closed on my teenage daughters hand and would not open with remote, button on hatch or the button on dash. Her hand was stuck and the only way to get her out was to take a pry bar to open it enough. Thank goodness we were home and I have tools. This could have been much worse.
The contact owns a 2020 Ford Edge. The contact stated that while the electronic rear hatch door was opened, the contact stated while placing items into the rear hatch, the rear hatch door erroneously closed making striking the contact. During the failure no injury was reported. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer who diagnosed that a rear hatch door shock had failed. No further information was available. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 50,000.
On multiple occasions over the past year of owning the vehicle the liftgate has not functioned properly. In one instance it failed to open with any attempt (remote, dash button, liftgate button) - we could not get it to open and had to leave it at dealership to be repaired. Since then, there have been 3-4 other times when it won't close and latch properly despite there being nothing in the way. It will lower, start to latch, then release itself and reopen. On those occasions, it can take up to 20 attempts to get it to close, latch, and remain closed. I have taken it twice to be looked at, but the dealership can't get it to replicate the malfunction and therefore have been unable to repair it.
I AM LEASING THE VEHICLE AND HAD IT FOR 6 MONTHS. WHEN PARKED AND LOADING GROCERIES INTO THE REAR, THE LIFTGATE HAS COME DOWN ON MY HEAD AND BACK AT LEAST 5 TIMES ON ITS OWN. THERE IS A SENSOR THAT IS UNDER THE CAR AND ACTIVATES WHEN YOUR FEET ARE UNDER IT. FAULTY DESIGN. YOU CANNOT LOAD THE BACK WITHOUT THIS LIFTGATE COMING DOWN ON YOU. I HAVE BEEN HURT AND SUFFERED HEADACHES AFTER GETTING HIT WITH THE LIFTGATE. I HAVE CONTACTED FORD AND HAVE AN OPEN CASE WITH THEM ADDRESSING THIS ISSUE. I RESEARCHED THIS ISSUE AND IT SEEMS THERE HAVE BEEN MANY COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS SAME ISSUE ON THE INTERNET.
THE BACK HATCH DOOR WAS OPEN TO PUT SHOPPING ITEMS AWAY, AND MY DAUGHTER TURNED AROUND TO PUT A CART AWAY IN A PARKING LOT. ALL OF A SUDDEN ANOTHER VEHICLE WAS COMING AND SHE BACKED UP WITH A CART IN FRONT OF HER, AND THE HATCH DOOR HIT HER BETWEEN THE SHOULDERS. IT HIT HER, IT STOPPED AND THEN MOVED UPWARDS. SOMETHING LIKE THIS ALSO HAPPENED TO ME WITH ANOTHER FORD THAT I TRADED IN LAST YEAR FOR THIS 2020 FORD. THE VEHICLE WAS IN FOR A CAMERA REPAIR PRIOR TO THIS, SO DO NOT KNOW IF A SENSOR IS OUT OR NOT FUNCTIONING CORRECTLY; AND THE REAR END OF THE VEHICLE MAKES A CREAKING NOISE SINCE THEY REPLACED THE REAR VIEW CAMERA. DO NOT KNOW IF THIS HAS ANYTHING DO DO WITH THE HATCH BACK OPEN AND CLOSE FUNCTION. THE VEHICLE WAS IN PARK IN A SPOT IN A SHOPPING CENTER ON A TWO WAY PARKING LOT.
