NHTSA Campaign: 00V268000

Component: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:FUEL INJECTION SYSTEM

VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: MINI VANS BUILT WITH 3.3L AND 3.8L ENGINES HAVE FUEL RAILS WITH NITROLE RUBBER O-RING SEALS THAT CAN DEGRADE OVER TIME. FUEL LEAKAGE FROM THE UNDERHOOD FUEL INJECTION FUEL RAIL COULD RESULT, INCREASING THE LIKELIHOOD OF A VEHICLE FIRE.

Risk: FUEL LEAKAGE IN THE PRESENCE OF AN IGNITION SOURCE CAN RESULT IN A FIRE.

Fix: DEALERS WILL INSTALL A SEAL ON THE VEHICLE FUEL RAILS TO PREVENT EXTERNAL LEAKAGE OF FUEL FROM THE FUEL RAIL CROSSOVER TUBE, SHOULD THE EXISTING O-RINGS CONTINUE TO DEGRADE. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN ON JANUARY 25, 2002. DUE TO THE LARGE QUANTITY OF VEHICLES INVOLVED IN THIS CAMPAIGN, THE OWNER NOTIFICATION WILL BE PHASED OVER THE NEXT SEVERAL MONTHS. HOWEVER, IF A VEHICLE IS LEAKING FUEL FROM THE O-RINGS, THE VEHICLE SHOULD BE TAKEN INTO A DEALER TO HAVE THIS REPAIRED AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT DAIMLERCHRYSLER AT 1-800-853-1403.

Owner-Reported Issues (20 of 597)

Electrical System3 issues
highELECTRICAL SYSTEM
Filed: Aug 2018

While driving at 60 mph, your dashboard warning lights all came on at once, and your horn, speedometer, fuel gauge, and cruise control stopped working. This suggests an electrical system failure that affected multiple components simultaneously. The dealer said no recalls applied to your vehicle. A mechanic will need to diagnose the electrical system — likely checking the alternator, battery, and related wiring.

NHTSA #: 11120658
highELECTRICAL SYSTEM
Filed: Oct 2014

Your instrument cluster and gauges periodically lose power and go completely dark, leaving you unable to see your fuel level, speed, or engine temperature while driving. This creates a safety concern since you can't monitor your vehicle's vital information. The fix will likely involve diagnosing the electrical connection to the instrument cluster, which may require replacing a faulty wire, connector, or the cluster itself.

NHTSA #: 10648391
highELECTRICAL SYSTEM
Filed: Mar 2014

Your instrument panel and airbag warning light fail to work when you turn on the ignition, and this problem happens on and off without a clear pattern. Your dashboard goes completely dark while the airbag warning stays lit. Fixing this will likely involve diagnosing the electrical connections to your instrument cluster and airbag system, possibly replacing fuses, relays, or the instrument panel control module.

NHTSA #: 10573818
Engine2 issues
highENGINE
Filed: Jun 2019

You heard a knocking noise from the engine and felt the vehicle hesitate when accelerating. A mechanic found that low oil pressure caused by faulty engine connecting rods was responsible for the problem. Fixing this will likely require engine work to replace the damaged connecting rods.

NHTSA #: 11220018
highENGINE
Filed: Feb 2013

Your serpentine belt has repeatedly come off while driving in wet weather, causing your engine to stall. Even after replacing the belt five times, the problem keeps happening. The underlying cause appears to be something beyond just the belt itself that needs to be identified and fixed.

NHTSA #: 10500134
Service Brakes1 issue
criticalSERVICE BRAKES
Filed: Aug 2017

Your brake system failed while driving on a city street, leaving you with almost no braking power. A repair shop diagnosed a ruptured brake line and found heavy corrosion on other brake lines as well. You were able to stop at a traffic light and drive slowly to the shop without a collision. The repair involved replacing all the hydraulic brake lines.

NHTSA #: 11016162
Air Bags,seat Belts,seats1 issue
criticalAIR BAGS,SEAT BELTS,SEATS
CrashFiled: Jul 2017

Your vehicle was hit from behind at highway speeds, and the airbags did not deploy when they should have. The front passenger seat separated from its track during the crash, and the seat belt failed to keep the passenger restrained, resulting in serious injuries to multiple occupants in both vehicles. The seat and safety restraint failures allowed the passenger to be thrown around the vehicle instead of being held securely in place.

NHTSA #: 11004775
Seats1 issue
criticalSEATS
CrashFiled: Jul 2017

Your front passenger seat came apart at the adjuster tracks during a rear-end crash, causing the occupant to be thrown into the back of the van and worsening their injuries. The seat's track system failed to keep the seat secure during the collision. This issue may require replacement or reinforcement of the seat adjuster tracks and mechanical components.

NHTSA #: 11004763
Air Bags,service Brakes1 issue
criticalAIR BAGS,SERVICE BRAKES
CrashFiled: Apr 2015

When you approached a red light and applied the brakes, your car failed to stop, resulting in a collision with two vehicles and the median. Your passenger airbag deployed, but the driver-side airbag did not, leaving you unprotected during the crash. You sustained serious injuries including a broken ankle, hand, ribs, and breathing difficulties that required three months of hospitalization. This issue involves both a complete brake system failure and a driver-side airbag that failed to deploy when needed.

NHTSA #: 10712116
Suspension1 issue
criticalSUSPENSION
Filed: Feb 2014

Your strut mount housing has rusted severely, with the metal almost completely worn away, leaving only a rusted ring holding the strut to the body. When driving at slow speeds (15-20 mph), you experience significant side-to-side shaking that feels like driving on a rough dirt road. This is a serious safety concern because the deteriorated strut mount can compromise your vehicle's stability and handling. Repair will likely require replacing the strut mount assembly and addressing any rust damage to the mounting points.

NHTSA #: 10568422
Steering,electrical System1 issue
highSTEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
Filed: Jun 2022

While driving, your power steering suddenly stopped working and your engine stalled. At the same time, your odometer and speedometer stopped showing accurate readings, even as the engine was revving. These problems suggest an electrical system issue that's affecting both your steering assist and your instrument cluster.

NHTSA #: 11471228
Air Bags,unknown Or Other1 issue
highAIR BAGS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
Filed: Apr 2020

Your van's horn stopped working after the original owner had the clock spring replaced under a recall for the driver's airbag. You're concerned that if the horn isn't working, the airbag might not be either, making the vehicle unsafe. Multiple dealerships have refused to repair it, and a local mechanic won't attempt the work because of the complexity of the steering column. The fix would likely involve replacing or properly installing the clock spring assembly and diagnosing the horn circuit connection.

NHTSA #: 11321721
Engine And Engine Cooling1 issue
highENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
Filed: Jan 2017

Your serpentine belt suddenly came off without warning. Even after you replaced the serpentine belt and pulleys, the problem happened again. The dealer said there's no recall or service campaign available to fix this recurring issue. Getting to the root cause of why the belt keeps coming off will likely require a mechanic to inspect the belt routing, tensioner, and pulley alignment.

NHTSA #: 10947639
Electrical System,air Bags1 issue
highELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS
Filed: Oct 2015

You received a recall notice for your 1998 Dodge Grand Caravan regarding the air bag and electrical system (NHTSA Campaign 14V373000), but the repair part wasn't available. You felt the manufacturer took an unreasonably long time to provide the necessary part for the repair. No air bag failure has occurred yet.

NHTSA #: 10780522
Electrical System,fuel/propulsion System1 issue
highELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
Filed: Sep 2015

Your car suddenly stopped running and won't start anymore. The issue involves both the electrical and fuel systems, so the problem could be related to the battery, starter, fuel pump, or ignition components.

NHTSA #: 10680587
Electrical System,engine1 issue
highELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
Filed: Dec 2013

While driving at 55 mph, your steering wheel became hard to turn and the battery warning light came on. A mechanic found that the serpentine belt had come loose from the engine. Even after a splash guard was installed to prevent this, the belt detached three more times while driving in rainy weather. The serpentine belt may need to be replaced, and the belt routing or tensioner may need adjustment to prevent it from coming loose again.

NHTSA #: 10555443
Fuel/propulsion System1 issue
highFUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
Filed: Nov 2013

When you start your Dodge Grand Caravan, strong fuel fumes enter the cabin. You've noticed fuel is leaking from the fuel rail, which is the source of these fumes. This issue started around 200,000 miles. The fix will likely require replacing or resealing the leaking fuel rail and its connections.

NHTSA #: 10551115
Steering1 issue
highSTEERING
Filed: Jun 2013

Your steering belt has come loose and shifted out of position after driving through puddles, and this has happened multiple times. Water may be getting into the steering system and causing the belt to slip or dislodge. The fix will likely involve inspecting the belt tension, checking for water damage, and possibly replacing the belt or adjusting its mounting.
