AIR BAGS:FRONTAL

ON CERTAIN MINI VANS, THE CLOCKSPRING ASSEMBLY MAY HAVE BEEN WOUND INCORRECTLY DURING THE VEHICLE ASSEMBLY PROCESS.

Fix: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE CLOCKSPRING ASSEMBLY ON ALL VEHICLES WITH 70,000 MILES OR LESS. AN EXTENDED LIFETIME WARRANTY WILL ALSO BE PLACED ON THIS COMPONENT FOR ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES, REGARDLESS OF MILEAGE. DAIMLERCHRYSLER WILL ALSO REIMBURSE OWNERS WHO HAVE PAID TO HAVE THE CLOCKSPRING REPLACED ON THEIR VEHICLES. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN NOVEMBER 18, 2002. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT DAIMLERCHRYSLER AT 1-800-853-1403.

ON CERTAIN MINIVANS, THE DRIVER'S AIR BAG MAY BECOME DISABLED DUE TO A FAILURE OF THE CLOCKSPRING, WHICH IS LOCATED IN THE HUB OF THE STEERING WHEEL.

Fix: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE CLOCKSPRING ASSEMBLY ON ALL COVERED VEHICLES WITH 70,000 MILES OR LESS. FOR THOSE VEHICLES WITH MORE THAN 70,000 MILES, DAIMLERCHRYSLER WILL OFFER AN EXTENDED LIFETIME WARRANTY UNDER WHICH IT WILL REPLACE THE CLOCKSPRING AT NO CHARGE IF IT FAILS. DAIMLERCHRYSLER WILL ALSO REIMBURSE OWNERS WHO HAVE PAID TO HAVE THE CLOCKSPRING REPLACED ON THEIR VEHICLES. THE RECALL BEGAN ON OCTOBER 12, 2004. Your vehicle was hit from behind at highway speeds, and the airbags did not deploy when they should have. The front passenger seat separated from its track during the crash, and the seat belt failed to keep the passenger restrained, resulting in serious injuries to multiple occupants in both vehicles. The seat and safety restraint failures allowed the passenger to be thrown around the vehicle instead of being held securely in place.

CONSUMER WRITES IN REGARDS TO UNSATISFACTORY SERVICE ON VEHICLE. *SMD THE CONSUMER STATED A FEW WEEKS AGO, THE AIR BAG LIGHT ILLUMINATED, AND THE HORN AND CRUISE CONTROL STOPPED WORKING, THE CONSUMER TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER, ALONG WITH A COPY OF THE SAFETY RECALL LETTER REGARDING PROBLEMS WITH THE CLOCKSPRING. AFTER AN HOUR, THE DEALERSHIP INFORMED THE CONSUMER THE PROBLEM WAS WITH THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM, NOT THE CLOCKSPRING AND THAT IT WOULD TAKE MORE THAN TWO HOURS TO TROUBLESHOOT THE ELECTRICAL PROBLEM, AND THERE WOULD BE A CHARGE TO DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM, PLUS THE REPAIR CHARGES. THE CONSUMER REFUSED THEIR OFFER. A FEW DAYS LATER, THE CONSUMER TOOK THE VEHICLE TO ANOTHER ESTABLISHMENT, WHERE THE MECHANIC'S FIRST REACTION WAS THE CLOCKSPRING. AN HOUR LATER, THE CLOCKSPRING WAS REPLACED AND ALL OF THE LOST FUNCTIONALITIES WERE RESTORED.

I THEN CAME TO THIS SITE AND FOUND DOZENS OF OTHER COMPLAINTS EXACTLY LIKE MINE. I WOULD LIST EVERYONE I FOUND BUT I'M SURE YOU CAN LOOK THEM UP FASTER THAN I COULD TYPE THE ID NUMBERS. I ALSO FOUND A RECALL CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 02V293000 ON YOUR SITE. I ASKED THE DEALER ABOUT THIS AND THEY CLAIM OUR CARAVAN IS NOT INCLUDED IN THAT RECALL. AIRBAG LIGHT CAME ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. AT THE SAME TIME THE CRUISE CONTROL WOULD NOT WORK AND THE HORN WOULD NOT WORK. THE DEALER ADVISED NOT A GOOD IDEA TO DRIVE THE CAR DUE TO THE FACT THE AIR BAG COULD DEPLOY WITHOUT ANY TYPE OF COLLISION. ALSO, THE HORN NOT WORKING WAS A HAZARD. ALTHOUGH WE HAD AN EXTENDED WARRANTY ON THE VEHICLE, THE DEALER ADVISED THE MATTER WAS NOT COVERED UNDER THE EXTENDED WARRANTY WE HAD PURCHASED. THE COST FOR REPAIR WAS $223.16. THE PROBLEM/COMPLAINT IS IN REGARDS TO AN ARTICLE I SAW IN 'AUTOMOTIVE NEWS' PUBLICATION ABOUT A NHTSA PROBE INTO DCX MINIWAN WIRING CAUSING AIRBAGS TO FAIL. BEGINNING LAST FALL SOME TIME, WE BEGAN NOTICING THE AIRBAG LIGHT TO COME ON. AT FIRST IT WAS VERY INTERMITTENT-ONCE EVERY COUPLE WEEKS OR SO. NOW THE PROBLEM IS MORE FREQUENT BUT STILL HAPPENING RANDOMLY. SOME DAYS THE AIR BAG LIGHT WILL STAY ON ALMOST CONTINUOUSLY AND OTHER DAYS IT DOESN'T COME ON AT ALL. BUT ANYWAY, WHEN I READ THE ARTICLE, THE DESCRIPTION SOUNDED EXACTLY LIKE WHAT WE ARE EXPERIENCING. THANK YOU. *AK

THE AIRBAG WARNING LIGHT ON THE DASH HAS BEEN COMING ON INTERMITTENTLY SINCE LAST NOVEMBER APPROXIMATELY. IT SOMETIMES LIGHTS WHEN STARTING THE VEHICLE, OR WHILE DRIVING, OR WHILE STOPPED IN TRAFFIC. THERE APPEARS TO BE NO PATTERN OR CIRCUMSTANCE THAT TRIGGERS THE LIGHT. I HAD THE PROBLEM CHECKED BY THE DEALERSHIP ON MARCH 3, 2001. I WAS TOLD THEY HAD CHECKED IT OUT AND RESET THE "TROUBLE CODES" AND TEST DROVE THE VEHICLE AND THERE WAS NO FURTHER PROBLEM. THEY SAID IF THE PROBLEM RECURRED, THEY WOULD HAVE TO DIAGNOSE IT FURTHER. I WAS CHARGED ABOUT $25.00 FOR THE WORK THEY DID. THE LIGHT AGAIN CAME ON BEFORE I REACHED HOME FROM THE DEALERSHIP, AND THE LIGHT CONTINUES TO INTERMITTENTLY COME ON AND OFF AS BEFORE. I HAVE NOT CONTACTED THE DEALERSHIP AGAIN REGARDING THE CONTINUING PROBLEM. I AM FILING THIS REPORT BECAUSE I BECAME AWARE OF YOUR INVESTIGATION INTO WHAT SOUNDS LIKE THE SAME PROBLEM I AM HAVING. WHEN I WAS AT THE DEALER, I ASKED IF THERE WERE ANY SIMILAR PROBLEMS REPORTED BY OTHER OWNERS AND WAS TOLD BY THE SERVICE MANAGER HE WAS NOT AWARE OF ANY, BUT SOMETIMES THE CLOCKSPRING COULS CAUSE A PROBLEM. BUT WITH MY MILEAGE, THERE WASN'T ANY WARRANTY COVERAGE FOR REPAIR. PLEASE ADD MY REPORT TO YOUR DATABASE.*AK
