2015 Dodge Durango Electrical Problems

**Subject:** Request for Investigation – Dodge Durango Taillight Water Intrusion and Safety Hazard To Whom It May Concern, I am writing to formally request that the National Highway Transportation Administration (NHTSA) investigate a widespread and potentially dangerous manufacturing flaw affecting Dodge Durango vehicles.

My Durango was sitting for 2days and caught on fire.Started in the rear back of the truck on the passenger side. Fire Dept said it was Electrical and 10,000 dollars of damage.

When driving home from work the car started malfunctioning wrong , accelerating by itself and I started to smell smoke when I pulled over to the side I started smelling smoke as soon I exited the vehicle it started flaming. Everything in my vehicle was burnt the fire department came and stated I should look up any recalls they said it was electrical. I bought the vehicle 30 days ago , dealership will not help neither the loan company I'm stuck with a vehicle who was sold with electrical problems almost to my life.

The contact owns a 2015 Dodge Durango. The contact stated that while the vehicle was parked, the contact returned to the vehicle to retrieve a work bag from the trunk. The contact noticed that there was smoke inside the vehicle, and flames were coming from underneath the front passenger's side seat. The contact was able to extinguish the fire with his breath, hand, and a cloth; however, the smoke persisted. The fire department was contacted and arrived at the scene. The fire department confirmed that the fire originated from the battery. No police report or fire department report was filed. The vehicle was towed to an autobody repair shop by the insurance company for an estimate of the repair. The contact sustained smoke inhalation but had not yet received medical assistance. The dealer and the manufacturer were not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 154,000.

The center track light (brake light) is defective; it collects water from the rain or melted snow and has shorted out parts of the light. The shorted area does not light up when braking. With parts of the track light blacked out by the short, it is not as effective in letting drivers behind me know when I am braking.

2015 Doge Durango, front passenger seat headrest malfunction "Active Head Restraint" and deployed while not in an accident. Headrest is available for inspection if requested. This occurred while the vehicle was being operated and caused a violent distraction.

Dodge "racetrack lighting" has cracks at upper left and upper right corners. Causing water to enter housing and short out a section of lights. Thankfully it has not caught fire.

On third generation dodge durango's (2014-2020), water and moisture can get inside the racetrack light on the rear of the vehicle, causing the light to stop working in multiple places, and in colder climate, can cause the moisture to freeze and the light to crack. While the vehicle is running at night, the racetrack light is the only light that is constantly on.

For a few months now, the bottom right hand section of the LED 'racetrack' tail lights on the trunk of my durango has been burned out. Apparently, this is coming from water filling up in the leds due to weather stripping to keep water out failing too early.

My rear racetrack lighting is not working. Water has gotten into the light and now has gone completely out. Truck is garaged kept and never been in accident.

I recently noticed still water inside my rear center tail lamp on the lift gate while parked before leaving home, that wouldn't leave, as a result of this a portion of the lamp had went out and no longer worked, eventually the entire lamp stopped working now causing a safety concern as I am now less visible to those behind me and causing me to be ticketed several times from law enforcement because of the lamp being out which is now turning this into a $2000 plus problem.

Rear taillight assembly has water caused by a manufacture defect of not properly sealing light assembly. Vehicle was taken to the local dodge dealership and was told this is a common problem with light assembly. This is a saftey problem and a recall should be issued.

I have taken great measures to ensure the safety of my family and other drivers related to an ongoing issue of service shifter. I have taken my vehicle under extended warranty 3 times for the same problem and suspect autonation has been unable to identify issue nor troubleshoot. My vehicle unexplainable is not accelerating and down shifting properly.

The liftgate tail light assembly allows water to seep inside, pooling in the lighting assembly. This LED to the rear lights shorting out and failing completely. After researching, this is a common problem that dodge continues to ignore; only offering to install a new assembly for the bargain price of $1200-1600 so that I will be visible from the rear to other drivers on the roadway.

After a visual inspection of the engine compartment the contact observed that the F70 Fuel Pump fuse was blown. There were no warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, who diagnosed failures with the fuel pump and fuel pump auxiliary power relay. The vehicle was not repaired. After investigating the failure, the contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 15V115000 (Electrical System); however, the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.

Im again reporting the racetrack tail lights. Im seeing a lot more water intrusion in dodge durangos of many years. We want answers! This needs to be investigated stat! Consumers should not have to pay $1800 for failure on dodges part! They know this is an issue with many years of these durangos. There is already a class action lawsuit against them for this issue. Please investigate this! We want answers....

My system keeps saying my seat needs Serviced for airbag system. Something electric is burning and something is happening with my radio system. It keeps changing to different stations or settings while music is playing

I have a 2015 but on all Durangos with the reat racetrack brake lighting, 2014 and newer dodge durango's, this product is fully defective on all. The brake lights and running lights go out and stop working on this style lighting and also obtain moisture. First you start losing some of the lighting on the track lighting as in brake light's until it fully goes out. This product needs to be recalled and replaced

The rear led license plates light obtain moisture corroding the electrical as do the racetrack rear light and go out. I have replaced the 2 rear license plat light assemblies and have gone again again causing myself to receive a traffic citation and attorney fee's due to this defect that thousands of other people are filing complaints about. All of the rear body lighting needs to be recalled and reimbursed for these expenses. The license plate led light(2) are not cheap from the dealer. I have also now received a traffic citation for the brake lighting not properly working on the race track lighting so I will be filing this as a legal matter with the courts to be reimbursed A police report was done as I was ticketed for both on 2 different occasions.

The rear race track light is not working completely and also the license plate lights are corroded and not working. Needs replacement.

The license plate light bulbs keep burning out caused by moisture/ wetness in the connectors due to poor design of rear lights.

Head rest on driver side with air bag started coming apart for no reason. I don’t see a recall Also, water keeps poking into rear tail light. No matter how many times I’ve drained it. I’ve heard this issue is called vehicle fires due to water getting into the electrical. I don’t want my vehicle to catch on fire with me or my grandkids inside. There is zero recalls and thousands of complaint regarding this issue. Dodge really need to do something about this before someone loses their life

Sections of LED brake light/race track light has stopped working due to water intrusion in rear panel. Back panel is not secured properly, allowing water to enter, corrode the harness and lights to fail. Due to this, the license plate harness & connectors are corroded as well. Replacing the tag lights will not fix the problem, you must replace the whole wiring harness for it to work again. The wiring harness is sold as one piece now by manufacturer due to this KNOWN issue, costing $600-$1000 to purchase and install. Manufacturer has stopped selling just the plate light plugs because they know the common issue with water damage, light failure and corrosion. The license plate lights are required by law to be working. Owners cannot continue replacing every year due to the manufacturers inadequate design. This impacts drivers with safety and on a legal level from law enforcement. There were no warning signals on my dash of this issue. Law enforcement has pulled me over for this issue and recommended speaking with the manufacturer.

Right headlight fuse will blow, then the blower motor for the front A/C goes out. Replaced in 2023, happened again in 2024

The rear 'race track' tail lights fail to light or are dim in lower sections of the assembly installed on the rear tailgate. Water enters the assembly over time and collects in the lower sections of the assembly causing the installed LED's and circuitry in those sections to fail. This repair is not covered by the extended warranty and would cost drivers approx 800 to install a replacement which would also leak.

fuel pump relay is failing to work from time to time

The contact stated that the middle rear taillight, known as the racetrack light, frequently burned out due to moisture entering the brake light housing. The contact had taken the vehicle to the dealer where the light had been replaced; however, the failure recurred. The manufacturer was also notified of the failure and informed the contact that the vehicle was no longer covered under warranty. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was unknown.

Water has collect in race strip light, since then I’ve been experiencing electrical problems with the car.

Water in tail lights. (Race track lighting) Yes, water in race track burns out rear lights causing a hazard for vehicles following not able to notice the vehicle in front. Replaced multiple times. Same outcome. (Water leakage) lights burnt out. It’s been inspected by dealership and ASC certified mechanics. No warning when the race track lights go out. Only way to notice is when you start to see water build up in the race track lighting.

The Blinker arm at the steering wheel has broken internally to where its useless taking my high beams, turn signals, wipers and everything else they put on it to not function properly. When I asked the dealership for a repair quote I was told the part is on back order due to high demand. When I looked at third party dealers the same issues no one has this part. I could see if this was a older car but if their blinker arm is breaking so much they can't keep a part in stock or tell you when it van be available should a safety concern. Also their design makes the blinker arm replacement 850 for part and 600 for labor. This shows poor design and poor craftsmanship in their parts

Liftgate tail light leaking and holding water causing light failure and electrical shorts. Which cause visibility for other drivers to not see your back end at night.

My left turn signal went out, so I replaced both my left and right turn signals. My vehicle now registers that my right turn signal is out constantly, even though it is operating properly and my left turn signal does the same periodically. Since my purchase of this vehicle, I have had issues with the navigation not functioning properly.

Request recall from chrysler dodge due to rear track light failure. Track light consist of 80% of your rear night time lights. Attached to the track light (rear back up camera and license plate light.

THE FUEL RELAY FAILED AND HAD TO REPLACE THETIMP THE FUEL PUMP ALSO FAILED TWICE.

The tailgate light gets filled up with water creating a short and burning our LED lights in the tail light. This is a known issue and the dealership charges over $1000 for the light and the time spend replacing it. Fcu should pay for the faulty design and replace all the tailgate lights for free.

Rear taillight assembly on the dodge durango has serious issues at a costly price. The left side of our taillight assembly has collected water and has short circuited the lower left portion of the lighting. You can actually see water pooled up in the lens.

Water got into the LED housing on the tailgate and all lights on tailgate then went out causing an expensive repair I now need. I went to milford (pa) dodge dealership when I first noticed water pooling in the light. ( not even 2 months after purchase) and they told me there's nothing they can do to fix it.

The LED back tail lights are not properly sealed, so water can leak into them and short out the lights, and cause electrical shortage.have tried to work with the dealership, and the chrysler corp., but since the vehicle is a 2015 model it is out of warranty. I feel this was a bad seal right out of the factory.

Water is getting into the rear tail lights through the factory seam. There are no visible cracks on the tail light and water is pooling up on the inside and slowly leaking out of the factory seals around the housing. Water is causing the lights to short out.

NOW IT'S PAST WARRANTY AND BULB IS OUT AGAIN. ACCORDING TO OWNER'S MANUAL, I'M NOT SUPPOSED TO BE CHARGED FOR REPEAT SERVICE VISIT FOR SAME ISSUE AFTER 3 VISITS.

WATER IS INSIDE THE LIFT-GATE RACE TRACK LIGHTING ASSEMBLY. WARRANTY DOES NOT COVER "WATER INTRUSION" OF WHICH THIS IS. NEXT MONTH MY VEHICLE WILL BE 2 YEARS OLD SO IF I DON'T IT FIXED AT A COST OF $1,100 THE LIGHTS WILL SOON BE MOLDY, SHORTED OUT OR CAUSING THE LIFTGATE TO RUST OUT. THIS SHOULD BE A WARRANTY FIX REGARDLESS OF AGE OR MILES.

THE PASSENGER SIDE HEADLIGHT CONNECTION BURNT AND MELTED THE CONNECTION SOCKET WHERE THE BULB CONNECTS. HAD THE SAME PROBLEM WITH MY 2011 DODGE CHARGER. THE WIRING HARNESS ON THE CHARGER WAS PART OF A RECALL. THE 2015 DURANGO HARNESS IS NOT ON A RECALL, YET. IT'S THE SAME PART, WITH THE SAME PROBLEM.

DODGE WANTS TO CHARGE $300 TO SWAP OUT THE BULB ON THE DRIVERS' SIDE BLINKER WHICH CAN BE DONE EASILY IN ABOUT 10 MINUTES WITH REGULAR OR LED BULB, HOWEVER IT SEEMS THAT AFTER HAVING SWAPPED OUT THE BULB WHICH SHORTED OUT ON THE TERMINAL CONNECTOR ITSELF (WHY IS MY BRAND NEW CAR CAUSING SHORTS FIRST OF ALL) SO I INSTALLED AN LED ON THE RIGHT SIDE AS WELL. HOWEVER, THAT CAUSED PROBLEMS SAYING THE RIGHT BLINKER IS OUT. SO NOW, REGARDLESS OF WHETHER I HAVE THE LED OR THE REGULAR LIGHT INSTALLED ON THE PASSENGER SIDE BLINKER IT NOW GOES IN AND OUT SAYING "RIGHT SIDE BLINKDER OUT" - AND THAT'S EVEN WHEN IT WORKS!??!!! WHY IS THE COMPUTER THINKING THE BLINKER IS OUT WHEN I SEE IT WORKS? GRANTED, THE STUPID LEFT SIDE STOPPED BEING DUMB BUT NOW IS THERE SOME ATTENUATION OR SOMETHING THAT THE COMPUTER DOESN'T LIKE SINCE YOU BURNED OUT MY FIRST BULB AND IT'S CAUSING ISSUES AT THE RIGHT SIDE? DODGE NEEDS TO ADDRESS THIS AS A RECALL UNDER WARRANTY BECAUSE IT IS ABSOLUTELY AN ISSUE, IT'S NOT A BULB PROBLEM, IT OCCURS WITH ANY BULB AND WHETHER IT I ACTUALLY OUT OR NOT IS NOT ACCURATE PER THE REPORTING FROM THE COMPUTER. SOMETIMES IT SAYS IT'S OUT AND IT IS, OTHER TIMES IT SAYS IT'S OUT AND IT'S NOT... THIS IS A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE NOTIFYING OTHER SURROUNDING PEOPLE/VEHICLES OF INTENT TO TURN.

SMELLED ELECTRONIC BURNING IN VEHICLE WHILE DRIVING ON HIGHWAY 378 FROM COLUMBIA SC. AFTER ABOUT A MINUTE THE INSTUMENT PANELWENT COMPLETELY BLANK. WORRIED THAT I MIGHT HAVE A DASH FIRE, I PULLED OVER ON THE ROAD SHOULDER IN BUSY TRAFFIC TO GET MY FAMILY OUT OF THE VECHILE AND INVESTIGATE. I CALLED THE LOCAL DEALER SERVICE DEPARTMENT AND WAS TOLD TO BRING THE VECHILE IN SO THEY COULD REPAIR IT. NERVIOUSLY I STARTED THE VECHILE BACK UP WITH MY FAMILY AT CURB SIDE. I WAITED FOR SEVERAL MINUTES TO ENSURE AN ELECTRICAL FIRE DID NOT OCCUR. I DROVE STRAIGHT TO THE DEALERSHIP WITHOUT ANY INSTRUMENTATION, OR TURN SIGNALS. THE VEHICLE HAS NOW BEEN IN THERE SHOP FOR OVER A MONTH.

REGARDING ODI PE 16-014 OPENED 16 DECEMBER 2016: ONE YEAR AGO (12/29/15) A NEIGHBOR ALERTED ME VIA TEXT TO THE FACT THAT MY VEHICLE WAS IN THE STREET OUTSIDE OUR HOME. I DISCOVERED MY 2015 DURANGO HAD ROLLED BACKWARD APPROXIMATELY 35 FEET COMING TO REST IN THE MIDDLE OF THE STREET. MY FIRST THOUGHT WAS THAT I HAD SOMEHOW FAILED TO PUT THE VEHICLE IN "PARK". HOWEVER, AFTER STARTING THE VEHICLE, I COULD SEE THE ROTARY DIAL CONTROLLING THE TRANSMISSION WAS CLEARLY INDICATED TO BE IN THE "P" POSITION. IT'S WORTH NOTING THAT AT THE TIME OF THE INCIDENT, THE VEHICLE WAS NOT RUNNING AND THE PARKING BRAKE WAS NOT ENGAGED. OBVIOUSLY, HAVING THE VEHICLE ROLL AWAY WAS NO SMALL CONCERN. SO I CONTACTED THE DEALER WHO SOLD ME THE VEHICLE AND WAS ADVISED TO TAKE IT TO A DEALER IN MY COMMUNITY FOR INSPECTION. ACCORDING TO THE SERVICE MANAGER AT THE LOCAL DEALERSHIP THIS WAS THE SECOND RECENT COMPLAINT HE HAD RECEIVED ON THIS SAME ISSUE. ULTIMATELY, THE DEALER INSPECTION TURNED UP NO DISCERNABLE CAUSE. I WAS SUBSEQUENTLY CONTACTED BY THE SM STATING THAT CHRYSLER WAS FLYING A COUPLE OF GUYS UP TO TAKE A LOOK AT BOTH VEHICLES INVOLVED IN THE ROLL-AWAY COMPLAINT. THIS PROCESS ULTIMATELY RESULTED IN MY RECEIPT OF CORRESPONDENCE FROM AN INDIVIDUAL WORKING "SPECIAL INVESTIGATIONS" FOR FCA STATING, IN ESSENCE, THAT MY DURANGO IS "FUNCTIONING AS DESIGNED". A FEW FINAL THOUGHTS: (1) THE SLOPE OF OUR DRIVEWAY IS STANDARD FOR HOMES BUILT ON FLATLAND. AN EYEBALL MEASUREMENT HAS THE RISE AT ABOUT 20" OVER A RUN OF 36'. (2) OUR DURANGO REPLACED A 2004 LINCOLN AVIATOR. THE AVIATOR UTILIZED THE SAME POSITION IN OUR DRIVEWAY FOR SEVERAL YEARS (SANS ENGAGEMENT OF THE PB), YET WE NEVER HAD AN ISSUE WITH IT ROLLING AWAY. MAYBE THIS CAN BE ATTRIBUTED TO DUMB-LUCK. OR, MAYBE IT WAS DESIGNED NOT TO. (3) FORTUNATELY, WE LIVE ON A QUIET STREET. THIS COULD HAVE BEEN REAL BAD.

2015 DODGE DURANGO. CONSUMER WRITES IN REGARDS TO VEHICLE COMPUTER CONTROL SYSTEM FAILURE ISSUES- LOSS OF CONTROL TO THE SHIFTER MODULE/ TRANSMISSION DAMAGE. *SMD THE CONSUMER STATED THE FAILURE OF THE COMPUTER SYSTEM CONTROLLED SYSTEM AFFECTED THE DRIVABILITY ON THE HIGHWAY. ONE SIGNIFICANT ISSUE RESULTING FROM THE PROBLEM, WAS LOSS OF CONTROL OF THE SHIFTER MODULE. IT RESULTED IN THE TRANSMISSION ABRUPTLY SHIFTING FROM REVERSE INTO PARK WITH POTENTIAL DAMAGE TO THE TRANSMISSION. A DIAGNOSIS REVEALED ALL THE PROBLEMS THE CONSUMER EXPERIENCED, WERE A RESULT OF SHORTED ELECTRICAL WRING. *JB

2015 DODGE DURANGO - WITH NO WARNING RMP'S START TO RACE BUT THE CAR LOSES ALL POWER. DIFFERENT LIGHT ON DASH HAVE COME ON. DEALER HAS HAD THE TRUCK 5 TIMES INCLUDING THE LATEST FOR OVER TO WEEKS. THEY REPROGRAM THE COMPUTER AND TRANSMISSION AND TRY TO SAY ITS FIXED. I REFUSE THE TAKE THE VEHICLE BACK THIS TIME. THIS TRUCK IS A DANGER TO MY FAMILY AND OTHERS ON THE ROAD. IT HAS PUT FAMILY IN DANGEROUS SITUATION MULTIPLY TIMES, INCLUDING WHEN TRYING TO MERGE ONTO THE NEW YORK STATE THRUWAY IN HEAVY TRAFFIC. WE WERE LUCKY THERE WAS A SHOULDER TO ROLL INTO.

Water gets in the back track light which is a known issue with the dodge track lights . My track light completely shorted out including my license plate lights . Dodge knows of this design flaw and should have to cover the cost of the replacement which is $1000 plus labor .

Dodge durango water in taillights causes waterlog in the LED lighting area and not draining LED out on the left side of vehicle. Replacing item cost around $1085.00 and up manufacturing design defect. Vehicle has 31954 miles on it.

I have already went through 3 rear tracklights on this vehicle (it is the large taillap on the back of the car) the most recent photo shows a lot of water in it.

2015 durango rt/AWD - water pools in the center tail lamp LED and shorts it out, making not only the "race track" portion of the LED lighting fail, but the tag lighting also, ticket issued from highway patrol. Replacement module is $700+ this is a well know and common occurrence

The rear deck lid tail lights fill with water eventually shorting out the lights and impacting the ability for other drivers to see the vehicle from the rear. Over time this may lead to other electrical problems as it is never good to have water accumulating in the tail lights. The backup camera is also shared in this component.

While driving at highway speed without warning multiple error messages were displayed followed by instrument cluster shutting off completely. Windshield wipers started without command. Turn signals and lights would not work.

Water is collecting in liftgate tail light from bad seals. I've read forums of smelling smoke or burning wires from back of vehicle. Afraid of that happening so I decided to removed 4 bolts to let water drain and now the tail light doesn't work.

Rear hatch light fills with water and the light stops working. Only fix is to replace the very expensive light assembly. Safety issue as rear light stops functioning.

The "racetrack" taillight system has a systemic issue with water infiltrating the enclosed sealed LED taillight system. This caused portions of the taillights to burn out and cause lower visibility than intended. Warranty companies consider this a "serviceable" part like normal bulbs, brakes, tires, etc.

Water and moisture get into the rear light strip and causes LED light failure. You cant fix the problem, just buy a new light assembly at $1000 and pray that doesnt get water in that one. Problem causes vehicle to fail inspection and poses a huge safety problem.

The rear tail light assembly, middle portion, has collected water inside of it which comes in contact with the tail light LED's inside causing them to short to ground. They blink/flash erratically but most of the time are not on. Also the license plate lights are affected by this and are not working either.

Water is in the racetrack tail light on both sides, I noticed the sound of water moving while driving, and its water in my tail light. The light are out at the bottom because of this

While driving my radio display screen went off 3 different times and finally restarted. On another day the air conditioning would come on by itself. First it was the rear air would come on high, I would turn it off and it would come right back on.

While using the vehicle on marksheffel rd we noticed that the horn was not working. That was our first sign for concern. Shortly afterwards while at a stop light we noticed that the steering wheel controls were not working either.

Ractrack light on rear tailgate has water inside of it and shorted out. Noticed burnt smell.

Electronic fuel door was constantly getting stuck and would not open unless the inside button was pushed multiple times. When I went to get gas, the plastic door popped off so the metal hinge is now visible and is an eyesore. This is a major safety issue.

I put the car in park got out of the car to get the mail. The car rolled down the driveway and struck another car causing a lot of damage. The car left skid marks in the driveway.
