Component: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION
This defect can affect the safe operation of the airbag system. Until this recall is performed, customers should remove all items from their key rings, leaving only the ignition key. The key fob (if applicable), should also be removed from the key ring. General Motors LLC (GM) notified the agency on July 3, 2014, that they are recalling 5,877,718 model year 2000-2005 Chevrolet Impala and Monte Carlo, 1997-2003 Chevrolet Malibu, 2004-2005 Malibu Classic, 1999-2004 Oldsmobile Alero, 1998-2002 Oldsmobile Intrigue, 1999-2005 Pontiac Grand Am and 2004-2008 Pontiac Grand Prix vehicles. In these models, the weight on the key ring and/or road conditions or some other jarring event may cause the ignition switch to move out of the run position, turning off the engine.
Risk: If the key is not in the run position, the air bags may not deploy if the vehicle is involved in a crash, increasing the risk of injury.
Fix: GM will notify owners, and dealers will install two key rings and an insert in the key slot or a cover over the key head on all ignition keys, free of charge. The recall began on September 9, 2014. GM's number for this recall is 14350.

Owner-Reported Issues (20 of 608)
Power Train →3 issues
While turning into your workplace parking lot, your transmission suddenly shifted into neutral and wouldn't shift back into drive, leaving your car stuck partially in the road. The car was driving normally until this happened, and you had to be towed to safety. This transmission failure could require a transmission fluid check, filter replacement, or internal transmission repair.

Your transmission shifts hard (roughly) once the engine warms up, even though your car only has 44,000 miles on it. The problem gets worse in stop-and-go traffic compared to highway driving. This likely requires transmission fluid inspection, filter replacement, or internal transmission service.

Steering →2 issues
Your steering wheel suddenly locked up while you were driving at 10 mph to merge onto an interstate, which caused your front driver's side tire to blow out. The vehicle then hit a pole, cracking the windshield and damaging the hood. You were able to drive the car home after a state trooper helped you put on the spare tire. The steering system may need to be inspected and repaired by a mechanic to determine what caused the lock-up.

While making a left turn at low speed (10-15 mph), your steering wheel suddenly spun and your car veered off the road, accompanied by an abnormal popping noise. A mechanic found that both the steering assembly and engine had detached from the vehicle. This is a serious loss-of-control situation that could have caused a crash.

Electrical System →2 issues
Your ignition key keeps coming out of the ignition switch while driving at various speeds, even though your vehicle was already serviced for this issue under a recall. When the key doesn't stay in the run position, your steering becomes difficult to control, and you have to manually remove and reinsert the key to get normal operation back. The dealer has recommended replacing the ignition switch to fix this problem.

Air Bags →1 issue
Your front driver and passenger airbags deployed while you were driving down a steep hill, even though there was no collision or damage to the car. This unexpected deployment suggests a problem with the airbag sensor system that may be falsely triggering on inclines. The fix will likely involve diagnosing and replacing the faulty airbag sensors or control module.

Unknown Or Other →1 issue
Your car is shutting off while you're driving, which causes the power steering to stop working and makes the car difficult to control—especially dangerous when turning at higher speeds. You're also experiencing sudden jolts or jerks while driving, and the engine loses power unexpectedly, creating severe control issues on icy or snowy roads. This problem likely involves the engine stalling and needs immediate diagnosis of the ignition system, fuel delivery, or engine control components.

Visibility →1 issue
While driving at highway speeds (55-60 MPH), your sunroof suddenly detached from the vehicle, creating abnormal wind noise inside the cabin. No warning light appeared before this happened. Your mechanic indicated there was a recall available for this issue, though the vehicle was not repaired at that time.

Service Brakes, Hydraulic →1 issue
Your brake fluid warning light came on while driving at 35 mph. A mechanic found that your brake line was rusted and leaking brake fluid, which is a safety issue since your brakes won't work properly without adequate fluid. The mechanic attempted to order replacement parts but the vehicle was never repaired.

Engine,fuel/propulsion System →1 issue
After using Valvoline oil in your engine, you experienced thermal breakdown of the oil and your engine block seized. The problem happened again after an oil change with the same oil. You suspect the oil may be breaking down too quickly in high heat conditions, possibly due to soy-based lubricants, and have noticed other vehicles in your area being towed for similar issues. This may require a complete engine inspection or replacement, and potentially switching to a different oil brand or viscosity grade.

Engine →1 issue
Your car takes multiple attempts to start, and once running, it jolts or hesitates when you accelerate. These problems have developed despite regular maintenance and recent dealership service. The starter may need replacement, or there could be issues with fuel delivery or ignition timing that require diagnostic testing.

Steering,electrical System →1 issue
Your car's battery is draining because an emergency warning light near the radio stays on even after you turn off the engine. You're also experiencing an abnormal clicking sound in the steering, and the power steering became completely inoperable while you were trying to park. The issue likely involves a faulty warning light circuit that's drawing power when it shouldn't, and a separate problem with the power steering system.

Electrical System,unknown Or Other,engine →1 issue
Your car's security system is malfunctioning and preventing the engine from starting without warning. The security light stays on or flashes, and it may take hours or even days before the car will start again—then the problem repeats shortly after you shut it off. This intermittent starting issue has caused you to miss work and waste money on unnecessary repairs. Fixing this typically involves diagnosing the security system module, possibly replacing the ignition switch or security control module.

Power Train,electrical System,service Brakes →1 issue
Your dashboard lights are dimming intermittently, and your power windows and mirrors have stopped working. You're also seeing the ABS and traction control warning lights staying on, with the traction control activating randomly, and your car cigarette lighter isn't working anymore. Additionally, your car requires multiple key turns to start—you may need to turn the key 2-3 times before the engine catches. These issues likely stem from electrical system problems that may require battery testing, alternator inspection, and diagnostic scanning to identify the root cause.

Electrical System,engine →1 issue
Your airbag warning light stays on, and your dashboard warning indicators and gauges flicker on and off. You've also experienced multiple engine misfires, which made you concerned the engine might stall while driving. The vehicle has not been diagnosed or repaired by a dealer. A mechanic will need to scan the engine computer for misfire codes and check the airbag system's electrical connections.

Exterior Lighting →1 issue
Your headlights suddenly shut off while you were driving at 50-55 mph without any warning. A dealership mechanic checked the vehicle but couldn't reproduce the problem or find any fault codes, so no repair was made. The fix may involve diagnosing the headlight circuit, testing the headlight relay, or replacing the headlight switch.

Electrical System, vehicle Speed Control →1 issue
Your speedometer is showing inaccurate speed readings while driving, sometimes displaying speeds over 120 mph that don't match your actual speed. This makes it difficult to know how fast you're actually going and could affect your ability to drive safely. The fix will likely involve diagnosing the speedometer circuit or instrument cluster and either recalibrating or replacing the faulty component.
