NHTSA Campaign: 15V701000
Component: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:ENGINE
General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 1998-1999 Chevrolet Lumina and Oldsmobile Intrigue, 1997-2004 Buick Regal and Pontiac Grand Prix, 2000-2004 Chevrolet Impala, and 1998-2004 Chevrolet Monte Carlo vehicles. The affected vehicles were previously repaired under recalls 08V-118, 09V-116, and 15V-201 to address the possibility that engine oil may drip onto the hot exhaust manifold.
Risk: Engine oil that drips onto the hot surface of the exhaust manifold may result in a fire.
Fix: The remedy applied under recalls 08V-118, 09V-116, and 15V-201 did not adequately remove the safety risk. Under the improved remedy, dealers will replace the engines front valve cover and gasket. Vehicles that are covered by recalls 08V-118, 09V-116, or 15V-201 that have not yet received the original remedy will instead receive the improved remedy under the original recall number. The recall began on February 19, 2016. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, Buick customer service at 1-800-521-7300, Oldsmobile customer service at 1-800-442-6537 and Pontiac customer service at 1-800-458-8006. GM's number for this recall is 15757. Note: Until the improved remedy has been applied, owners are advised to park their vehicle outside since the fire risk exists even when the vehicle is unattended.

General Motors LLC (GM) notified the agency on April 2, 2015, that they are is recalling certain model year 2004 Buick Regal vehicles manufactured April 9, 2003, to June 1, 2003, 2004 Chevrolet Impala vehicles manufactured April 8, 2003, to June 23, 2003, and 2004 Chevrolet Monte Carlo vehicles manufactured April 7, 2003, to June 23, 2003. On May 18, 2015, GM expanded the recall to cover an additional 49,751 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix vehicles manufactured January 6, 2003, to June 25, 2004. In the affected vehicles, the valve cover gasket may leak.
Risk: The leaking engine oil can drip onto the hot surface of the exhaust manifold, increasing the risk of a fire.
Fix: GM will notify owners, and dealers will remove the plastic cover and plastic oil fill tube extension and replace the front valve cover and gasket. These repairs will be done free of charge. The recall began on April 24, 2015. Owners may contact Buick customer service at 1-800-521-7300, Pontiac customer service at 1-800-762-2737 or Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020. Component: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION
This defect can affect the safe operation of the airbag system. Until this recall is performed, customers should remove all items from their key rings, leaving only the ignition key. The key fob (if applicable), should also be removed from the key ring. General Motors LLC (GM) notified the agency on July 3, 2014, that they are recalling 5,877,718 model year 2000-2005 Chevrolet Impala and Monte Carlo, 1997-2003 Chevrolet Malibu, 2004-2005 Malibu Classic, 1999-2004 Oldsmobile Alero, 1998-2002 Oldsmobile Intrigue, 1999-2005 Pontiac Grand Am and 2004-2008 Pontiac Grand Prix vehicles. In these models, the weight on the key ring and/or road conditions or some other jarring event may cause the ignition switch to move out of the run position, turning off the engine.
Risk: If the key is not in the run position, the air bags may not deploy if the vehicle is involved in a crash, increasing the risk of injury.
Fix: GM will notify owners, and dealers will install two key rings and an insert in the key slot or a cover over the key head on all ignition keys, free of charge. The recall began on September 9, 2014. GM's number for this recall is 14350.

Owner-Reported Issues (20 of 1071)
Engine →3 issues
Your car stalled while you were exiting a highway at 65 mph and wouldn't restart. You then noticed smoke coming from under the hood, and when you opened it, you saw a fire underneath the engine. The fire department had to extinguish it. You had also noticed a battery warning light was on before the stalling occurred. The vehicle was towed but not inspected to determine what caused the fire.

While driving at 60 mph, your engine suddenly shut off and heat came pouring through the air vents. When you opened the hood to investigate, flames erupted from the engine manifold—you had to use a floor mat to extinguish them. After restarting, the check engine light came on. The issue appears to involve oil leaking from the valve cover and front gasket area, which likely caused the engine fire.

Unknown Or Other →2 issues
Your traction control system light is on, and you're experiencing grinding noises along with your brakes feeling like they're locking up and your power steering becoming stiff. These issues happen while driving, especially when turning, braking, or steering, and occur in various conditions from local streets to highways. The problem likely involves your traction control system, brake system, and power steering components working together and may require diagnostic testing to identify the root cause.

Your car jerks every time it shifts gears, and when stopped at a light or stop sign, it won't move smoothly when you press the gas — you have to press the pedal all the way down, and even then it jerks and peels out. You're concerned the car might stop moving entirely while driving. This transmission problem has been reported by other owners with the same model.

Electrical System,engine →1 issue
While driving at 40 mph, your Impala suddenly slowed to 20 mph and the dashboard lights went out. The power steering stopped working, the engine lost power, and the car stalled. Neither an independent mechanic nor the dealer could figure out what caused the problem, and it was never repaired. This could involve checking the electrical system connections, battery, alternator, or engine control modules.

Seat Belts →1 issue
Your driver's side front seat belt buckle appears to click and engage normally, but when you pull on the belt, the metal clip pops out of the buckle instead of staying locked. This has been happening for several weeks and creates a serious safety risk since the seat belt won't stay fastened during driving. The buckle assembly may need to be replaced with a new or used unit from another vehicle.

Power Train,electrical System,vehicle Speed Control →1 issue
Your car loses power and can't accelerate properly, especially going up hills or ramps, causing it to decelerate when you need speed. This is dangerous because other cars have to swerve around you to avoid accidents. The problem likely involves your engine's ability to produce power, possibly related to fuel delivery, ignition timing, or transmission shifting.

Steering,electrical System,air Bags →1 issue
Your ignition switch is loose and won't turn off completely without extra force, which is causing electrical problems. Your steering wheel is now leaning and pulling to the left whether you're stopped or driving, though it's worse on city streets than highways. The diagnostic code is recommending replacement of the ignition switch, and you'll likely need to have both the ignition switch replaced and the steering system inspected and realigned.

Electrical System, unknown Or Other →1 issue
Your 2004 Impala's engine shut off while driving with no warning, leaving you stranded on a busy road. The PassLock III anti-theft system appears to be causing unexpected no-start conditions on many GM vehicles, and you were only able to restart your car after performing a 10-minute reset procedure. This issue may require diagnosis and repair of the PassLock III anti-theft system, possibly including reprogramming or component replacement.
