NHTSA Campaign: 14V400000

Component: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION

This defect can affect the safe operation of the airbag system. Until this recall is performed, customers should remove all items from their key rings, leaving only the ignition key. The key fob (if applicable), should also be removed from the key ring. General Motors LLC (GM) notified the agency on July 3, 2014, that they are recalling 5,877,718 model year 2000-2005 Chevrolet Impala and Monte Carlo, 1997-2003 Chevrolet Malibu, 2004-2005 Malibu Classic, 1999-2004 Oldsmobile Alero, 1998-2002 Oldsmobile Intrigue, 1999-2005 Pontiac Grand Am and 2004-2008 Pontiac Grand Prix vehicles. In these models, the weight on the key ring and/or road conditions or some other jarring event may cause the ignition switch to move out of the run position, turning off the engine.

Risk: If the key is not in the run position, the air bags may not deploy if the vehicle is involved in a crash, increasing the risk of injury.

Fix: GM will notify owners, and dealers will install two key rings and an insert in the key slot or a cover over the key head on all ignition keys, free of charge. The recall began on September 9, 2014. GM's number for this recall is 14350.

NHTSA Campaign: 15V701000

Component: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:ENGINE

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 1998-1999 Chevrolet Lumina and Oldsmobile Intrigue, 1997-2004 Buick Regal and Pontiac Grand Prix, 2000-2004 Chevrolet Impala, and 1998-2004 Chevrolet Monte Carlo vehicles. The affected vehicles were previously repaired under recalls 08V-118, 09V-116, and 15V-201 to address the possibility that engine oil may drip onto the hot exhaust manifold.

Risk: Engine oil that drips onto the hot surface of the exhaust manifold may result in a fire.

Fix: The remedy applied under recalls 08V-118, 09V-116, and 15V-201 did not adequately remove the safety risk. Under the improved remedy, dealers will replace the engine’s front valve cover and gasket. Vehicles that are covered by recalls 08V-118, 09V-116, or 15V-201 that have not yet received the original remedy will instead receive the improved remedy under the original recall number. The recall began on February 19, 2016. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, Buick customer service at 1-800-521-7300, Oldsmobile customer service at 1-800-442-6537 and Pontiac customer service at 1-800-458-8006. GM's number for this recall is 15757. Note: Until the improved remedy has been applied, owners are advised to park their vehicle outside since the fire risk exists even when the vehicle is unattended.

FireFiled: Jan 2026

Your car caught fire and exploded while you were starting it, with flames coming through the dashboard and air vents. There were no warning lights or signs of problems before this happened. The fire marshal has inspected the vehicle. This could involve issues with the fuel system, electrical components, or engine that caused the fire, and will likely require a complete inspection and replacement of damaged fuel and electrical parts.

FireFiled: May 2021

Your car caught fire in your driveway shortly after returning home from an air conditioning service at a Pepboys location. The fire occurred in the electrical system, engine, or fuel system area, potentially related to work performed during the AC service. This is a serious safety hazard that requires immediate investigation by a qualified technician to identify what caused the fire.

Your car has an electrical problem that's causing your turn signal lights to work intermittently and your speedometer to not light up at all. You're also noticing a strong gasoline smell when you run the heat or air conditioning. There are open recalls on your vehicle related to engine cooling, exhaust/fuel leaks, and electrical issues, with concerns about potential fire risk.

NHTSA #: 11289264
Engine3 issues

Filed: Apr 2019

After your car had the recall service done in April 2017 to fix an engine oil leak issue, the valve cover gasket failed within months. You noticed smoke coming from the engine after oil changes in summer 2017 and 2018, and in March 2019 oil began seeping onto the hot exhaust manifold creating smoke and a fire hazard. When inspected, the gasket was found torn and damaged—it appears the bolt caught and tore the gasket during installation, causing it to fail well before the one-year warranty expired. The repair will likely involve reinstalling the valve cover gasket correctly or replacing it with a properly installed gasket.

FireFiled: Jul 2019

You're noticing a burning oil smell while driving at various speeds, and you can see oil pooling in your engine compartment. Your check engine light hasn't come on, but this indicates your engine is leaking oil somewhere. The repair will likely involve identifying the source of the leak—which could be a valve cover gasket, oil pan gasket, or oil filter housing—and replacing the damaged seal or gasket.

Filed: Apr 2019

Your engine runs hotter than normal, and the check engine coolant light used to come on frequently. You replaced the radiator hose and clamps, which turned off the warning light, but your engine still runs hot. You're concerned this could be a larger cooling system problem that might cause a fire, and you're hesitant to drive the car until it's repaired.

Suspension,electrical System,wheels1 issue
criticalSUSPENSION,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,WHEELS
Filed: May 2025

Your power windows and turn signal blinkers stop working intermittently. Your front wheel hub assembly is damaged, and your front brake calipers are damaged, which is affecting your steering control. These issues create safety risks and should be inspected immediately. Repairs will likely involve replacing the damaged hub assembly, brake calipers, and checking the electrical connections for the windows and blinkers.

Air Bags1 issue
criticalAIR BAGS
Filed: Feb 2024

Your airbags deployed unexpectedly while you were driving alone out of a supermarket parking lot, even though there was no crash. The deployment was forceful enough to cause injury and trigger a panic attack, and it also damaged your windshield and dashboard. The airbag system may need to be diagnosed to determine why it deployed without impact.

Electrical System,unknown Or Other1 issue
highELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
Filed: Oct 2022

Your trunk spontaneously opens while driving due to a faulty TrapAlert (trunk emergency release) system. The system's wiring in the trunk, which connects to your stereo amplifier, is sending false signals that someone is trapped inside, triggering the trunk to pop open unexpectedly. This happened at highway speeds and poses a safety risk. The fix will likely involve replacing or rewiring the TrapAlert system components, including the looped wiring harness and potentially the stereo amplifier wiring connections.

Fuel/propulsion System1 issue
highFUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
Filed: Oct 2020

Your gas gauge bounces up and down while driving, making it impossible to know how much fuel you actually have. This caused you to run out of gas on the road. The fuel pump needed to be replaced to fix the problem, and other Chevrolet Impala owners appear to experience similar issues.

Filed: Aug 2020

Your car requires multiple attempts to start, and you've identified the ignition switch as the likely cause. The dealer has been unable to repair it due to cost concerns, and the problem keeps happening. Fixing this will likely involve replacing the ignition switch assembly.

Filed: Mar 2020

Your car's cooling system warning light keeps indicating that coolant is low, and you're experiencing coolant leaks even though this issue was supposedly addressed in 2003. Additionally, your transmission is showing a delayed shift when accelerating from first to second gear. You may need a cooling system inspection to find and repair the leak source, and transmission service to address the shift delay.

Filed: Feb 2019

Your 2002 Chevrolet Impala is leaking oil, fuel, and power steering fluid, and the engine won't start. Multiple warning lights are on, including the engine, traction control, and power steering indicators. The manufacturer confirmed your vehicle isn't covered by a recall. Fixing this will likely require a mechanic to diagnose and repair the leaks and starting issue.

Filed: Sep 2018

The spring in your driver's seat has broken, and you've noticed rust developing under the doors and quarter panels on both your 2002 and 2004 Impalas — a widespread issue you've observed on other Impalas of similar age. The rust underneath is severe enough that it's difficult to get a jack under the cars, even though both vehicles were rustproofed and kept in a garage. Addressing this would likely involve replacing the seat spring and treating the rust with sandblasting, rust converter, and protective coating.

highELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC),SERVICE BRAKES
Filed: Jul 2018

Your car's ABS (anti-lock braking system) and traction control are activating unexpectedly, even when there's no reason for them to engage, making it harder to stop smoothly at low speeds. Both the ABS and traction control warning lights stay on as soon as you start the car. The shop suspects an electrical grounding problem, and you've also noticed your headlights flicker when the ABS kicks in. This will likely require diagnosing and repairing the electrical ground connections in the braking and traction control systems.

CrashFiled: May 2025

Your car's tires have a valve leak that's causing a slow air leak. The valve stem appears to be pushed in, which is allowing air to escape gradually. You'll need to have the tire valve stems inspected and likely replaced to stop the leak.
