Filed: Feb 2026

Your engine's oil pump may fail prematurely because it contains plastic parts that become brittle over time. This is a known issue affecting multiple owners of this vehicle model. When the oil pump fails, your engine won't receive proper lubrication, which can cause severe engine damage. The repair will require replacing the oil pump assembly and possibly flushing the engine oil system.

Filed: Feb 2026

Your car's oil filter housing was not properly constructed at the factory and is failing. BMW has acknowledged this is affecting multiple vehicles of this model. You may notice oil leaks or warning lights related to oil pressure, and the housing will need to be replaced to prevent engine damage.

NHTSA #: 11721034
highENGINE
Filed: Feb 2026

Your engine lost coolant and triggered an overheating warning that forced you to pull over. The problem was traced to a leaking oil filter housing, which shouldn't fail this early in the vehicle's life. This left you stranded far from home in winter conditions.

NHTSA #: 11717167

Filed: Sep 2025

Your engine is leaking coolant from multiple sources — the oil filter housing and water pump. You may notice coolant leaking while driving, and if enough coolant escapes, your engine could overheat and leave you stranded. The fix will likely involve replacing the leaking gaskets, seals, or the water pump itself.

NHTSA #: 11686666

Filed: Jul 2025

Your PCV valve (a part that manages engine ventilation) is failing. You purchased your car as certified pre-owned in 2020, and you're experiencing the same issue that was recalled in 2018 BMW X3 M40 models. This should be inspected and likely replaced by a mechanic to prevent further engine problems.

Your car's coolant system uses plastic pipes that can become brittle and crack over time, which can cause the entire coolant system to fail and potentially damage the engine. This is a known issue at BMW repair facilities. If you notice coolant leaks, overheating, or a sweet smell near the engine, have it inspected immediately. The fix typically involves replacing the plastic coolant pipes with new ones.

Your BMW dealership has told you that the motor mounts need to be replaced, even though your vehicle has fewer than 29,000 miles and these parts typically last 60,000 to 100,000 miles. Since the mounts are failing well before their expected lifespan with no warning signs or dashboard indicators, this suggests a manufacturing defect or installation error from the factory. You may notice this is a known issue affecting 2018-2020 X3 models. Fixing this will involve removing and replacing the engine motor mounts.

On two separate occasions during very cold weather (below 20°F), your dashboard instrument cluster goes completely dark and stops working, leaving you unable to see your speed, engine RPM, fuel level, engine temperature, or mileage. Your turn signals also stop working during these episodes, though your headlights, iDrive screen, and climate control continue to function normally. Restarting the car doesn't fix the problem, but the dashboard returns to normal operation after the car sits in a warmer garage overnight. The issue appears to be temperature-related and may involve the dashboard's electrical connections or power supply needing inspection and possible repair.

Your headlights are flashing on and off, which the owner believes may be caused by a faulty headlight switch. This is a safety concern because it could affect your visibility and potentially distract other drivers on the road. The fix would likely involve inspecting and possibly replacing the headlight switch.

Your daytime running lights stopped working, similar to a problem that occurred about 4 years earlier and was fixed under warranty. BMW is now refusing to cover the repair on your 7-year-old vehicle, leaving you to pay out of pocket. The repair will likely involve replacing the daytime running light bulbs or the headlight assembly.

NHTSA #: 11686663
mediumELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING
Filed: Sep 2025

Your left front daytime running lights have failed for the third time in 7 years, even after a warranty replacement less than 4 years ago. This repeated failure suggests a potential electrical or design issue with the daytime running light assembly on the driver's side of your vehicle. The fix will likely involve replacing the daytime running light unit and investigating the underlying electrical problem to prevent future failures.

Filed: Dec 2025

Your front passenger airbag occupancy sensor has failed, which means the system may not detect when someone is sitting in the passenger seat. If a passenger is in the seat during a crash, the airbag might not deploy, greatly increasing the risk of serious injury. You'll see a dashboard warning light and hear a chime alerting you to the problem. The sensor needs to be replaced to restore proper airbag protection.

Vehicle Speed Control1 issue
criticalVEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
Filed: Aug 2025

While driving on the highway with cruise control engaged, your vehicle suddenly lost power and began decelerating without responding to throttle input, forcing you to coast across traffic lanes to the shoulder. After restarting the engine, the vehicle operated normally with no error codes detected at the dealer. This same issue occurred again several months later with identical results. The problem may involve the throttle control system, engine management computer, or cruise control module needing diagnostic testing or replacement.

Filed: Mar 2025

Your car's passenger seat occupancy sensor is malfunctioning, causing the passenger-side airbag to randomly deactivate even when someone is sitting there. BMW diagnosed it as a faulty seat mat, but refused to cover it under warranty. After a battery replacement, the problem worsened—your car lost all communication with the passenger seat safety system and now shows a permanent airbag warning light. The fix will likely involve replacing the seat occupancy sensor mat and possibly reprogramming the seat safety module.

Multiple components under your hood have been melting over the years, including hydraulic lines and coolant reservoirs, and most recently part number 17127799184 has melted three times. Your BMW dealership performed diagnostics but cannot definitively identify what's causing the melting, though they suggested starting with a heating module replacement without guaranteeing it will fix the problem. BMW corporate declined to provide warranty assistance or a solution despite acknowledging that continuous component melting is not normal.

Lane Departure1 issue
highLANE DEPARTURE
Filed: Oct 2025

Your Lane Departure Warning and Blind Spot Detection systems unexpectedly turned off while driving at speeds over 45 MPH, and a message appeared confirming the deactivation. The dealer was unable to diagnose or fix the issue. This safety feature malfunction may require a software update or replacement of the lane detection camera or control module.

highPOWER TRAIN,ENGINE
Filed: Oct 2025

Your 2018 BMW X3 has experienced multiple oil and coolant leaks over several years, requiring replacement of the turbocharger, oil cooler, water pump, turbo lines, radiator hose, thermostat, and valve cover gaskets. The dealer recently confirmed your crankshaft seals are also leaking, which you believe is caused by a faulty Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) system creating excess pressure in the engine. Oil leaking onto hot engine parts poses fire and safety risks, and oil dripping onto roads creates environmental hazards. The repair will likely involve diagnosing and repairing or replacing the PCV system components and any damaged seals or gaskets.

Filed: May 2025

After your windshield was replaced with an OEM part following road debris damage, you're experiencing a strong reflection of the head-up display in the middle of your view during sunny driving conditions, which is distracting and different from your original windshield. Your BMW service center confirmed the issue exists and that BMW engineers are aware of similar reports, but BMW stated there's nothing they will do about it. The reflection disappears when driving in shade, and there are no warning lights related to the problem.

NHTSA #: 11661482
Seat Belts1 issue
mediumSEAT BELTS
Filed: May 2025

Your seat belt warning light came on while you were driving. The warning light indicated a potential issue with the seat belt system, though you didn't take the vehicle to a dealer to have it diagnosed or repaired. Fixing this will likely involve a mechanic checking the seat belt tensioners, connectors, and the warning system electronics to identify and correct the fault.
