NHTSA Campaign: 18V329000

Component: UNKNOWN OR OTHER

Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain 2012-2016 Eos, 2012 Passat, 2012-2016 CC, 2015-2016 e-Golf, 2011-2015 Touareg, 2012-2015 and 2017 Tiguan, and 2011-2016 Golf and 2011-2013 GTI vehicles. Modifications made while the vehicles were in an internal evaluation period may cause the affected vehicles to not comply with all of the applicable regulatory requirements.

Risk: If the vehicles do not meet all regulatory requirements, there could be an increased risk of a crash, fire, or injury.

Fix: Volkswagen will notify owners, and dealers will repair the vehicles to make them fully compliant or Volkswagen will repurchase them if necessary, free of charge. The recall began November 29, 2018. Owners may contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-893-5298.

NHTSA Campaign: 15V483000

Component: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL

Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain model year 2010-2014 Volkswagen CC, and Passat, 2010-2013 Eos, 2011-2014 Golf, GTI, Jetta, and Tiguan, and 2012-2014 Jetta Sportwagen vehicles. In the affected vehicles, debris may contaminate the air bag clock spring, a spiral wound, flat cable that keeps the air bag powered while the steering wheel is being turned. This contamination may tear the cable and result in a loss of electrical connection to the driver's frontal air bag.

Risk: A loss of electrical connection to the driver's frontal air bag will prevent the air bag from deploying in the event of a vehicle crash, increasing the risk of injury.

Fix: Volkswagen will notify owners, and dealers will install a protective cover over the steering wheel clock spring if the air bag light is off. If the airbag light is on and the steering wheel clock spring requires replacement, dealers will install a new steering wheel clock spring. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began on January 15, 2016. Owners may contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-822-8987.

Component: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE

Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain model year 2009-2014 Tiguan vehicles manufactured July 2007 to June 2014. When using winterized fuel, in certain conditions bubbles may form in the fuel system which could result in the vehicle stalling.

Risk: A vehicle stall increases the risk of a crash.

Fix: Volkswagen will notify owners, and dealers will update the vehicle's software to increase the fuel pump pressure, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin August 19, 2014. Owners may contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-822-8987. Volkswagen's number for this recall is 24AV/2W.

Filed: Jun 2025

Your car's power steering system randomly stopped working. Since your Tiguan uses electronic power steering rather than hydraulic, you'll need professional service to diagnose and repair the issue.

NHTSA #: 11667453
criticalSTEERING
Filed: Jul 2023

Your power steering suddenly fails while driving, making it very difficult to control the vehicle. The problem disappears after shutting off and restarting the car, but returns again when you try to drive it, particularly when turning. You've had to limp the car home at low speeds twice, and the dealer has been unwilling to diagnose the issue. The fix will likely require a dealer inspection and possible replacement or repair of the power steering system components.

Your power steering system keeps cutting out while you're driving. This means the steering wheel becomes harder to turn until the power steering kicks back in. This can make your vehicle difficult to control and should be inspected by a mechanic right away.

NHTSA #: 11703432

Your daughter experienced a loss of power steering while driving, which an independent mechanic said is common for this model year and attributed to a failing battery. After the battery was replaced, the steering wheel seized while the car was parked. The issue occurred at approximately 100,000 miles.

Your steering wheel clock spring is broken, which means your driver airbag won't deploy and your steering wheel controls don't work. This is a serious safety issue. Volkswagen issued a recall (15V483000) to fix this problem, but the dealer says the parts are backordered and can't tell you when they'll be available. The repair will involve replacing the clock spring assembly in your steering wheel to restore airbag function and steering wheel control operation.

While turning into a parking spot, you heard a loud snap from your wheel and an airbag error light appeared on your dashboard. Your horn stopped working, and all the electrical controls on your steering wheel became unresponsive—you can't change the screen display, check your speed digitally, or see tire pressure readings. Based on your research, this matches a known recall issue with the clock spring, which could prevent your airbag from deploying in a crash. The fix will likely involve replacing the clock spring component under the recall.

NHTSA #: 11514949
criticalELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS
Filed: Sep 2022

Your vehicle has multiple electrical failures affecting safety and convenience: the horn doesn't work, the airbag warning light is on, and various dashboard functions don't respond (tire pressure adjustment, fuel door lock, hands-free calling). The clock spring—a component that connects steering wheel controls—has failed for the second time in a year. According to your complaint, there's a concern that this malfunction could potentially trigger the airbags unexpectedly. Fixing this will require replacing the failed clock spring and diagnosing the broader electrical system issues causing the dashboard and airbag light problems.

Filed: Dec 2022

Your timing chain stretched while driving, causing your engine to shake and vibrate severely. The problem happened at 66,000 miles, even though the timing chain is rated to last 120,000+ miles and your car was regularly maintained. Your engine is now damaged beyond repair, and the dealership is charging $7,000 to replace it. The fix will require a complete engine replacement or major engine rebuild.

Your check engine light is on due to problems with your thermostat and water pump. Volkswagen has acknowledged this is a known issue affecting your vehicle model under a settlement, but the company is refusing to cover the repair costs. Getting the thermostat and water pump replaced should resolve the warning light.

Your check engine light comes on every time you drive, and the dealership identified it as a timing belt issue—a known problem in 2014 Tiguans. They've warned you not to drive the car because the engine may stall, and the repair could cost up to $3,000. While Volkswagen says there's no official recall, similar cases have resulted in extended warranties covering 100,000 miles or 10 years, but the company has declined to help with your situation.

Your car's airbag clock spring was repaired under a recall in 2020, but it has failed again as of September 2022. This means your horn and airbags may not work properly, which is a serious safety concern. The clock spring component will need to be inspected and likely replaced again by a technician.

Your airbag warning light came on, and your steering wheel horn and buttons stopped working. A mechanic told you there was a recall for this problem on your model, but the dealer said your specific vehicle wasn't included in the recall and wasn't under warranty. The airbag system likely needs diagnosis and repair to restore both the airbag safety function and steering wheel controls.

Your airbag warning light turned on, and at the same time you lost the ability to use your steering wheel controls (like audio and cruise control buttons) and your horn stopped working. These issues appeared together, suggesting they may be connected to the same electrical problem. The repair will likely involve diagnosing the electrical connection between your steering wheel controls and airbag system, possibly replacing a faulty clockspring or connector.

Your sunroof is leaking water into the cabin on the passenger side, causing water to pool on the floor and potentially reach passengers. The dealer cleaned the clogged drainage system, but the problem returned shortly after. Your car becomes undrivable during rain, and the dealer hasn't provided a permanent fix. The repair will likely involve inspecting and clearing the sunroof drainage system, sealing any gaps around the sunroof frame, or potentially replacing the sunroof assembly.

Filed: Apr 2023

Your panoramic sunroof has a faulty sealant that's allowing water to leak into your vehicle, which has caused mold to grow inside. The sunroof itself works fine, but the dealer says this is a known problem for your model year and warns that replacing it costs $6,000+ with no guarantee it won't happen again. You've been breathing moldy air, which poses a health and safety risk. Fixing this would require replacing the sunroof seal or the entire sunroof assembly.

Filed: Jan 2023

Your 2014 Tiguan is experiencing multiple serious issues: carbon buildup is causing the engine to stall and shake, the heater core is restricted and overheating (creating a potential fire risk), spark plugs may have been replaced unnecessarily due to a computer misdiagnosis, and oil is leaking from bad seals and hoses with a burning oil smell. These problems have been misdiagnosed several times and pose safety concerns. Repairs will likely involve cleaning carbon deposits from the engine, replacing the heater core, diagnosing the computer system, and replacing faulty seals and hoses.
