Component: EQUIPMENT:OTHER:LABELS
Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain 2018-2021 Atlas and 2020-2021 Atlas Cross Sport vehicles equipped with accessory side steps. The reduced Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) label, reflecting the additional weight of the side steps, was not installed. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 110, "Tire Selection and Rims."
Risk: Without the reduced GVWR label, the vehicle could be overloaded, leading to a loss of control and increasing the risk of a crash.
Fix: Dealers will install the reduced GVWR label, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed March 31, 2022. Owners may contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-893-5298. Volkswagen's number for this recall is 09D9.
NHTSA Campaign: 22V152000
Component: AIR BAGS:SIDE/WINDOW
Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain 2019-2020 Atlas, 2020-2023 Atlas Cross Sport, and 2021-2023 Atlas FL vehicles. The door wiring harness electrical contacts may corrode, disrupting the electrical connection and delaying the deployment of the driver or passenger front side air bag during a side impact crash.
Risk: A delayed air bag deployment can increase the risk of injury.
Fix: Dealers will secure and, as necessary, replace any the front door wiring harnesses showing a fault code, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed June 20, 2022. Owners may contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-893-5298. Volkswagen's number for this recall is 97GF.
NHTSA Campaign: 22V815000
Component: TIRES:PRESSURE MONITORING AND REGULATING SYSTEMS
Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. Owner-Reported Issues (20 of 25)
Air Bags →4 issues
Your passenger side airbag occupancy sensors aren't working properly. While other 2020 Atlas models have a recall for this issue, yours may not be included in it yet. This means the airbag system might not deploy correctly if someone is sitting in the passenger seat during a crash. Having the occupancy sensors diagnosed and replaced by a dealer should resolve the problem.

Your airbag warning light and error message won't turn off, and the dealership diagnosed a faulty airbag sensor. They've warned you that this sensor failure could prevent your airbags from deploying in a crash, which is a serious safety concern. The dealership has scheduled a replacement appointment, but your car isn't covered under the current recall.

Your vehicle has a wiring harness problem in the door that's causing the airbag warning light to turn on. Your dealer diagnosed this issue months ago and is waiting for a replacement part. Even though your vehicle's identification number (VIN) isn't currently included in the recall, you're experiencing the same problem that VW is recalling in other Atlas models. The fix will require the dealer to replace the faulty door wiring harness once the part arrives.

Your passenger side airbag warning light is on, and the passenger seat heater has stopped working. Both systems share the same wiring harness, so the problem likely affects both at once. This appears to be the same issue that Volkswagen recalled in April 2023 for certain 2018-2021 Atlases, but your vehicle's VIN wasn't included in that recall. The fix will likely involve inspecting and repairing or replacing the wiring harness connection between these two systems.

Steering,forward Collision Avoidance →2 issues
Your vehicle's electric power steering rack has failed repeatedly—it's been replaced 3 times, and each failure included creaking in the front suspension and clunking in the steering. You've also experienced a separate problem where faulty door harness wiring caused the autonomous emergency braking to activate unexpectedly in traffic. VW has denied your warranty extension request even though they previously extended coverage for other issues on this vehicle and your previous Atlas. The steering rack likely needs replacement again, which may involve removing the front suspension components to access and swap out the entire steering rack assembly.

Your steering gear feels loose and makes noise while driving, and your steering wheel shakes and vibrates. After several hours, your forward collision warning light came on along with the cruise control light. The dealer says your steering gear needs to be replaced and the forward collision system needs to be recalibrated, which costs around $3,000. You may not feel safe driving at highway speeds until this is fixed.

Electrical System, unknown Or Other →2 issues
After enrolling in Volkswagen's Car-Net Safe & Secure trial program, your Atlas's emergency assistance feature stopped working and displayed an SOS error code. Your dealership confirmed the Car-Net module inside your vehicle has failed internally. Repairing this issue will likely require replacing or reprogramming the Car-Net module.

Your navigation system isn't showing your correct location and keeps rerouting you away from your intended path. It has suggested dangerous maneuvers like turning the wrong way onto one-way streets, directing you toward water, suggesting U-turns on expressways, and routing you through private property—creating serious safety risks, especially in unfamiliar areas. Fixing this will likely require updating your navigation software or recalibrating the GPS system through your vehicle's infotainment settings or a dealer service.

Electrical System,service Brakes,forward Collision Avoidance →1 issue
Your car's automatic braking system activates unexpectedly in random locations—even when no vehicles are nearby—and appears to be triggered by certain road line markings, crosswalks, or roundabouts, forcing you to disable the feature for safety. Additionally, when your fuel level drops below one-quarter tank, your car won't crank and start, even though the battery tests as good; this has occurred three times.

Engine,fuel/propulsion System →1 issue
Your engine is shutting off unexpectedly while idling, at low speeds (5-10 mph), and on the highway, which creates a serious safety hazard. The dealership replaced the vapor charcoal canister and the problem went away for about a year, but it has returned—and the issue doesn't trigger any diagnostic codes, making it difficult to pinpoint. A malfunction warning appears after the engine shuts off at highway speeds. The fix may involve diagnosing and replacing fuel system components, possibly including the vapor canister again or related fuel system parts.

Steering →1 issue
Your steering wheel became difficult to turn while driving, your hazard lights came on, and then the steering wheel completely seized up. A mechanic diagnosed this as a failure of your rack and pinion—the component that converts the steering wheel's rotation into side-to-side movement. This issue happened at around 78,000 miles and requires replacing the entire rack and pinion assembly to restore steering control.

Power Train,engine →1 issue
Your car's engine is shutting off unexpectedly while stopped at traffic lights, stop signs, drive-throughs, and parking lots, showing error messages like "START ENGINE MANUALLY" or "AUTO START/STOP FAILURE." The only way to restart it is to shift into park and turn the ignition off and back on, which is dangerous in busy traffic. The dealer says this is a known issue affecting multiple VW Atlas vehicles but has no fix available, and the problem is occurring multiple times per week even when the auto start/stop system is manually disabled. Fixing this will likely require a software update or reprogramming of the engine control module, or potentially replacement of related sensors or electrical components.

Air Bags,service Brakes,forward Collision Avoidance →1 issue
Your 2020 Atlas is triggering forward collision warnings and applying the brakes on its own when there's nothing in front of you, which feels like you've lost control of the vehicle as it slows down unexpectedly—this could potentially cause an accident. Additionally, your airbag warning light is on and your dealer says the replacement part is on backorder. Since you transport young children in this vehicle, both issues are concerning, especially after a previous steering recall didn't fully resolve your control problems.

Power Train,electrical System,air Bags →1 issue
While driving, your transmission suddenly downshifted and warning lights appeared on your dashboard for the Passenger Occupant Detection System and Electronic Power Control. When you restarted the vehicle, the same problem happened again. This combination of transmission and electrical warning signs suggests a fault in the vehicle's control systems that needs professional diagnosis.

Electrical System,structure,service Brakes →1 issue
Your car is giving a false warning that your driver's door is open when it's actually closed. When this happens and you're slowing down or stopping, the car suddenly activates the emergency/parking brake on its own. This has occurred twice in a week and creates a safety hazard by causing abrupt, unexpected braking. The dealership identified this as a known defect where the door latch can freeze and trigger this malfunction. Fixing this will likely involve replacing or repairing the door latch assembly and related sensors.

Air Bags,seats →1 issue
Your airbag warning light came on while driving, and your seat heater stopped working. The dealer diagnosed a faulty wire in the seat that needs replacement. This should be repaired soon since the airbag warning indicates a potential safety system issue.

Steering,electrical System →1 issue
Your steering wheel rattles and fights to straighten itself when you turn at low speeds, creating a collision hazard. Your GPS malfunctions and gives incorrect directions, and the problem transfers to your phone's maps when connected via CarPlay—but stops on your phone once unplugged. Your heater doesn't work properly until the temperature setting reaches about 80 degrees, with rear vents blowing hot air while front vents stay cold. All three issues started after a module was replaced in early March 2024. A technician will likely need to diagnose the module replacement work and may need to recalibrate or reprogram electrical systems related to steering, navigation, and climate control.

Electrical System,lane Departure →1 issue
Your car's electronic parking brake is engaging while you're driving, your driver's window rolls down when you try to roll it up, and your blindside warning lights stay on and flash even when no cars are nearby. These are the same problems you had before, which were supposedly fixed with a replacement wiring harness in May 2022. The issue likely involves a faulty door wiring harness that needs to be replaced again or inspected for proper installation.

Electrical System →1 issue
While driving at 35 MPH and slightly releasing the accelerator pedal, your vehicle suddenly stopped without any warning light appearing. You were able to safely drive to your destination, but when you took it to the dealer, they found that a wiring harness needed to be replaced. The issue occurred at approximately 17,049 miles and has not been repaired yet. The fix will likely involve replacing the faulty wiring harness that controls the throttle or engine management system.

Electrical System, vehicle Speed Control, forward Collision Avoidance →1 issue
Your Atlas has experienced multiple issues with its safety and electrical systems. The emergency braking system activates unexpectedly when backing up or transitioning from downhill to flat road, the remote start feature disables your radio and cruise control, driver-side window buttons sometimes respond backwards or don't work, GPS accuracy has degraded over time, and safety systems (lane assist, emergency braking) become overactive in snowy conditions, causing random beeping, warnings, and unintended braking. Repairs may involve recalibrating or updating the forward collision avoidance sensors and electrical control modules, and potentially replacing GPS components.
