TOYOTA IS RECALLING MODEL YEAR 2000-2003 TUNDRA VEHICLES ORIGINALLY SOLD IN OR CURRENTLY REGISTERED IN THE FOLLOWING STATES: CONNECTICUT, DELAWARE, ILLINOIS, INDIANA, KENTUCKY, MAINE, MARYLAND, MASSACHUSETTS, MICHIGAN, MINNESOTA, NEW HAMPSHIRE, NEW JERSEY, NEW YORK, OHIO, PENNSYLVANIA, RHODE ISLAND, VERMONT, VIRGINIA, WEST VIRGINIA, WISCONSIN AND THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA. EXCESSIVE CORROSION OF THE REAR CROSS MEMBER MAY CAUSE THE SEPARATION OF THE SPARE TIRE STOWED UNDER THE TRUCK BED WHICH WOULD PRESENT A ROAD HAZARD THAT COULD CAUSE A CRASH. ALSO, CORROSION OF THE REAR CROSS MEMBER COULD AFFECT THE REAR BRAKE LINES AND THE PROPORTIONING VALVE RESULTING IN DIMINISHED BRAKING CAPABILITY.

Risk: SEPARATION OF THE SPARE TIRE AND DIMINISHED BRAKE CAPACITY COULD INCREASE THE RISK OF A CRASH.

Fix: TOYOTA IS ASKING OWNERS OF THE AFFECTED VEHICLES TO REMOVE THE SPARE TIRE FROM UNDER THE VEHICLE UNTIL A REMEDY CAN BE OBTAINED. DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE REAR CROSS MEMBER AND RELATED COMPONENTS, INCLUDING THE BRAKE LINES, AND REPLACE THEM IF NECESSARY. IF THE CROSS MEMBER DOES NOT NEED TO BE REPLACED, IT WILL BE SPRAYED WITH A CORROSION PROTECTION COMPOUND. THESE SERVICES WILL BE PERFORMED FREE OF CHARGE, HOWEVER MULTIPLE VISITS TO THE DEALER MAY BE REQUIRED. THE SAFETY RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN ON OR ABOUT APRIL 30, 2010. Filed: Nov 2024

Your truck's frame and front bumper have developed severe rust. This is a structural issue that affects the integrity of your vehicle's body and safety components. The rust will likely continue to spread and weaken the affected areas over time. Addressing this will require professional assessment and possible replacement or repair of the rusted frame and bumper components.

NHTSA #: 11624704

Filed: May 2024

Your truck's subframe and bed supports have developed significant corrosion that makes it unsafe to carry loads in the truck bed. A mechanic discovered this issue during a corrosion inspection at around 180,000 miles. Fixing this will likely involve replacing or repairing the corroded subframe and support structures underneath your truck bed.

NHTSA #: 11589647

Filed: Apr 2024

You discovered severe rust on the frame near the firewall when performing maintenance on your front splash guard. The rust appears deep enough that the frame could potentially crack, which would be dangerous at highway speeds or in traffic. This rust may have developed from moisture from your air conditioning drain system, and your truck's year/model is known to be susceptible to frame rust in salt-heavy states. Addressing this will likely require professional frame inspection and rust repair, which may include treating the affected area or replacing damaged frame sections.

Filed: Jan 2024

Your truck's subframe — the metal frame that supports the vehicle's structure — has developed severe rust and corrosion. A mechanic determined this damage makes the vehicle unsafe to drive and the subframe will need to be replaced. This is a structural integrity issue that requires professional repair before the vehicle should be driven.

Your truck's frame has deteriorated to the point where it can no longer be safely repaired, despite Toyota applying a protective coating years ago as part of a safety recall. Your mechanic has determined the corrosion is too severe to fix. While Toyota acknowledges frame issues have been recalled on other years and models, your 2002 Tundra is not included in those recalls, even though your truck only has 135,000 miles.

NHTSA #: 11482164

CrashFiled: Mar 2025

Your truck's frame has developed significant rust that a mechanic says makes it unsafe to drive. Although Toyota was aware of this frame rust issue and performed a recall inspection years ago, your frame was cleared at that time but has since deteriorated. The repair will likely require a complete frame replacement or extensive welding and reinforcement work to restore structural integrity.

NHTSA #: 11645683
highSUSPENSION
Filed: Oct 2023

Your front suspension developed a serious problem where the lower ball joint separated from the steering knuckle, causing your truck to vibrate while driving. You had to slow down to maintain control, and a dealer inspection confirmed the ball joint had come loose from its connection. Repairing this will require replacing the lower ball joint and likely having the front end realigned to correct the wheel angle.

NHTSA #: 11549253
Seat Belts2 issues
highSEAT BELTS
Filed: May 2025

Your driver's side seat belt buckle receptacle doesn't always click properly and the belt can come undone while you're driving. When this happens, you may have difficulty getting the belt to latch back in. The problem has been getting worse since late March, and your Toyota dealer hasn't been able to fix or replace the part yet. The fix will likely involve replacing the seat belt buckle assembly on the driver's side.

NHTSA #: 11660184
highSEAT BELTS
Filed: Feb 2024

Your seatbelts are malfunctioning in multiple ways: they lock up before you can buckle them, fail to retract after unbuckling and hang out the door (draining your battery), and get twisted and stuck in the plastic guide at the top of the door. This has been an ongoing problem for years, and one seatbelt became so stuck it required cutting to free it, leaving it extremely difficult to use now. You'll need to have the seatbelt assemblies inspected and replaced to restore proper function and safety.

Fuel System, Gasoline,structure1 issue
criticalFUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE,STRUCTURE
Filed: Feb 2025

Your fuel tank detached from your truck due to severe rust on the subframe that holds it in place. This happened at around 190,000 miles, and no warning lights alerted you to the problem beforehand. The dealer was contacted but didn't diagnose or repair the issue. Fixing this will likely require replacing the rusted subframe and reattaching or replacing the fuel tank.

NHTSA #: 11640935
Power Train,engine1 issue
criticalPOWER TRAIN,ENGINE
CrashFiled: Dec 2024

While backing up a trailer in 4WD low range on an incline, your truck suddenly stopped as if stalled, then lurched backward violently after a loud bang underneath, causing the trailer to jackknife into a tree and flip the truck. This may have been caused by 4WD drivetrain "bind" or "wind-up" — a condition where the front and rear axles lock together under certain conditions and create extreme torque that can suddenly release with violent force. The owner's manual provided no warning about this potential hazard. Addressing this would likely require Toyota to issue service bulletins, update owner's manuals with 4WD bind warnings, or investigate potential drivetrain design changes.

NHTSA #: 11628419
Electrical System,vehicle Speed Control,service Brakes1 issue
criticalELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES
CrashFiled: Jun 2023

Your truck suddenly accelerated to maximum power on its own while the brake pedal became unresponsive, causing you to lose control and roll over. The gas pedal was in the correct position and nothing was physically blocking either pedal, suggesting an electronic failure in the throttle control system. This combination of uncontrolled acceleration and brake failure resulted in a crash. The repair would likely involve diagnosis and replacement of the electronic throttle control module and brake system components.

NHTSA #: 11528828
Exterior Lighting1 issue
highEXTERIOR LIGHTING
Filed: Mar 2025

Your headlights and high beams are noticeably dim, and the high beams don't provide significantly brighter illumination than the regular headlights. This makes it difficult to see far ahead on dark roads, which is particularly concerning in rural areas with wildlife. The issue may involve worn bulbs or an electrical charging problem that prevents proper brightness.

NHTSA #: 11649956
Tires1 issue
highTIRES
Filed: Feb 2023

Your tires developed visible cracks in the sidewalls within 2 years of purchase, even though you maintained proper air pressure and drove the vehicle infrequently. By 2022, one tire's sidewall failed completely, causing a flat — something you've never experienced in 39 years as a mechanic. Despite good tread remaining and only 13,350 miles of use, you don't trust the other three tires and believe this is a material defect. The tire manufacturer may need to evaluate the sidewall construction and potentially replace or credit your tires.

NHTSA #: 11506146
