NHTSA Campaign: 12V542000

Component: TIRES:TEMPORARY/EMERGENCY SPARE TIRE

Toyota is recalling certain model year 2001 through 2004 Tacoma light trucks manufactured from August 28, 2000, through August 27, 2004, and originally sold, or currently registered, in the following cold climate states with high road salt usage: Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and the District of Columbia. The spare tire in the subject vehicles is located underneath the rear of the vehicle and held by a spare tire carrier. A lift plate on the carrier is used to help raise, lower and retain the tire. During its manufacture, the lift plate may not have been sufficiently coated with anti-corrosion materials. If the plate is insufficiently coated and the vehicle is operated in cold climate regions where road salts are frequently used, road spray can reach the carrier assembly and corrode the lift plate.

Risk: Corrosion of the plate could cause it to break, which could result in detachment of the spare tire from the vehicle. Detachment of the spare tire could result in a road hazard which may increase the risk of a vehicle crash.

Fix: Toyota will notify owners, dealers will inspect the vehicle and replace the spare tire carrier lift plate as necessary, free of charge. The recall began in February 2013. Owners may contact their Toyota dealer or the Toyota Customer Experience Center at 1-800-331-4331.

Component: SUSPENSION:FRONT:CONTROL ARM:LOWER BALL JOINT

ON CERTAIN SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES, DUE TO A MANUFACTURING ISSUE IN THE FRONT SUSPENSION LOWER BALL JOINT, THERE IS A POSSIBILITY THAT THE SURFACE OF THE BALL OF THE JOINT MAY HAVE BEEN SCRATCHED. THE BALL JOINT MAY EVENTUALLY EXPERIENCE EXCESSIVE WEAR AND LOOSENESS, RESULTING IN INCREASED STEERING EFFORT.

Risk: THE LOWER BALL JOINT MAY SEPARATE FROM THE KNUCKLE CAUSING LOSS OF STEERING CONTROL AND A CRASH COULD OCCUR.

Fix: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE FRONT SUSPENSION LOWER BALL JOINTS FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON JULY 5, 2005. OWNERS MAY CONTACT TOYOTA AT 1-800-331-4331.

Component: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:DELIVERY:HOSES, LINES/PIPING, AND FITTINGS

ON CERTAIN PICKUP TRUCKS, DURING SIDE IMPACT NCAP TEST (I.E. LINCAP TEST), A FLANGE AT THE REAR END OF THE DOUBLE CAB BODY DEFORMED AND INTERFERED WITH THE FUEL INLET HOSE THAT CONNECTS THE FUEL FILLER PIPE AND FUEL TANK, RESULTING IN DAMAGE TO THE FUEL INLET HOSE.

Risk: THIS DAMAGE COULD RESULT IN FUEL LEAKAGE, WHICH COULD RESULT IN A FIRE IF IN THE PRESENCE OF AN IGNITION SOURCE.

Fix: DEALERS WILL INSTALL A FUEL HOSE PROTECTOR ON THE BODY FLANGE. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN JUNE 3, 2003. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT TOYOTA AT 1-800-331-4331.

While your truck was parked, you noticed the rear subframe (the metal support structure holding the rear axle) was heavily corroded and had detached from the vehicle. This is a serious structural issue that left your truck unable to drive safely. The dealer was contacted but didn't diagnose or repair the problem. Fixing this will require either welding the subframe back into place or replacing it entirely.

Your truck's frame has rusted completely through and is no longer safe to drive, according to your mechanic's inspection. Despite regular maintenance and storage in a garage, the frame deterioration has progressed to a point where the vehicle fails inspection. Addressing this issue would require frame repair or replacement, which is a major structural repair.

Your truck's frame has severely rusted, and the frame is now only held together by about two inches of rusted metal on both sides above the rear wheels, creating a terrible noise. A mechanic has warned that you shouldn't drive the truck because there's a risk it could split in half. You're asking if there's a recall that would cover frame replacement or repair at no cost to you.

Your Tacoma's rear subframe on both the driver and passenger sides has developed significant corrosion while parked. This structural component supports your truck's rear suspension and drivetrain. The dealer was unable or unwilling to address the issue, and Toyota referred you to NHTSA for assistance. Addressing this may require professional inspection to determine if the corroded subframe needs reinforcement, repair, or replacement.

NHTSA #: 11623181

Filed: Nov 2023

Your truck's frame has rusted significantly and failed inspection, even though Toyota applied a rust treatment at their dealership in 2010. The rust is severe enough that welding is now required to pass inspection. This is a known issue Toyota has addressed in other vehicles by replacing entire frames, but your truck was only treated with a temporary coating that hasn't prevented the rust problem. Frame rust can compromise structural safety and may require frame replacement or extensive welding repairs.

While driving over railroad tracks, your lower ball joint separated from its socket, causing your CV axle shaft to break and your upper ball joint to separate as well. This caused your front driver's side tire to collapse under the fender, making your truck suddenly veer off the road onto the shoulder with no warning signs beforehand. The lower ball joints had been replaced during a recall in 2006, but the replacement parts appear to have failed. Fixing this will require replacing the lower ball joints, upper ball joint, and CV axle shaft.

Your truck's frame was supposed to be replaced under a recall after it failed inspection for rust perforation, but the dealer only replaced the spare tire rack assembly instead. Your frame has continued to rust severely and will likely fail your next inspection; you've already paid $2,500 to have it welded. Getting the frame properly replaced or repaired would likely require frame replacement, welding work, or a full frame restoration depending on the extent of rust damage.

Your Tacoma was subject to a frame recall, and you brought it to a Toyota dealer for service. However, the dealer only replaced the spare tire carrier instead of addressing the frame issue. Your frame has continued to rust severely, requiring $2,500 in spot welding repairs, and may fail the next inspection. The dealer's work did not resolve the original recall concern, leaving you with an unsafe vehicle and significant unexpected repair costs.

Your Tacoma's rear frame has split completely in half, and the frame on the other side shows stress fractures. When you turn or drive at highway speeds, the vehicle wobbles and you've temporarily lost control. This appears to be related to rust and corrosion damage to the frame, a known issue affecting 1996-2004 Tacomas. Fixing this requires frame replacement or welding to restore structural integrity.
