POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION
Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2005-2007 and 2009-2010 Toyota Sienna vehicles. In the affected vehicles, due to a problem within the shift lock assembly, the shift lever may be moved out of the 'Park' position without depressing the brake pedal.
Fix: Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will replace the shift lock solenoid and reapply the grease, free of charge. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331. Toyota's number for this recall is H0V. Vehicles that were previously recalled under campaign 13V-429 are not affected by this recall.
POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION
Toyota is recalling certain model year 2004-2005 Sienna vehicles manufactured January 10, 2003, through August 10, 2005; and model year 2007-2009 Sienna vehicles manufactured February 20, 2007, through December 12, 2008. In the affected vehicles, due to a problem within the shift lock solenoid, there is a possibility that the shift lever could be moved out of Park position without depressing the brake pedal.
Fix: Toyota will mail interim notifications to owners beginning in late October 2013. When parts are available, owners will be sent a second notice and dealers will replace the shift lock solenoid, free of charge. Owners may contact Toyota at 1-800-331-4331.

Your Sienna rolled backward down your driveway and into the street on its own, even though you had parked it and turned off the engine. When you drove it back up, it happened again. This vehicle was previously recalled for a power train issue (Campaign 17V657000), and Toyota has opened a case file to investigate why the problem is recurring.

Your gear shifter may have become loose or broken, causing it to move freely between gears instead of staying locked in place. You might notice the shifter won't hold in 5th gear, 4th gear, or Park without you holding it, and it moves easily into Reverse and Neutral. The shifter repair will likely involve replacing the internal mechanism or bracket that keeps the shifter positioned in the selected gear.

THE SHIFTER LOCKS UP IN PARK AND WON'T COME OUT OF GEAR. IF THE VAN IS RUNNING OR OFF IT WON'T COME OUT OF GEAR. HAVING THE PARKING BRAKE ON MAKES NO DIFFERENCE. HAVE TO ROCK THE VAN BACK AND FORTH TO GET IT OUT OF GEAR.
I'VE ONLY HAD THE VAN FOR 5 MONTHS AND THIS PROBLEM HAS OCCURRED OVER A DOZEN TIMES, BEGINNING WITH THE DAY I BOUGHT IT. AND EVERY TIME THIS PROBLEM HAS OCCURRED I'VE BEEN DRIVING ON DRY ROADS. IT USUALLY HAPPENS WHEN DRIVING AROUND A CORNER, ANYWHERE FROM 35-65 MPH, FAR. ALL OF A SUDDEN THE TRACTION CONTROL LIGHT STARTS BEEPING, THE BRAKES ENGAGE ON THEIR OWN, AND THEN ENGINE MAKES A LOUD NOISE (LIKELY DOWNSHIFTING ITSELF). IT'S AS THOUGH THE VEHICLE THINKS IT IS SLIPPING, EVEN THOUGH IT IS NOT, I DRIVE VERY CAUTIOUSLY SO IT'S NOT ME FLYING AROUND A CORNER SUPER FAST, IT ALSO HAPPENS WHEN MY PARTNER DRIVES THE VAN AS WELL. I FINALLY TOOK THE VAN TO A MECHANIC AND THEY TOLD ME IT WAS THE STEERING ANGLE SENSOR THAT WAS FAULTY AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED, SO I SPENT $900 TO HAVE IT REPLACED. I'VE HAD THE VAN BACK FOR LESS THEN 2 WEEKS AND JUST TRIED TO TAKE IT ON A ROAD TRIP, GOT ABOUT AN HOUR FROM OUR HOUSE AND IT DID IT AGAIN 3 TIMES IN LESS THEN 15 MINUTES, AGAIN DRIVING ON DRY PAVEMENT AND WHEN DRIVING ON A WINDY HIGHWAY. IT'S TERRIFYING WHEN THIS HAPPENS ESPECIALLY BECAUSE IT ALWAYS HAPPENS WHEN WE'RE GOING AROUND A CORNER, IT'S VERY DANGEROUS AND SCARY. IT SEEMS TO BE HAPPENING WITH A LOT OF OTHER SIENNA'S, EVEN NEWER ONES. THIS IS AN EXPENSIVE PROBLEM THAT DESPERATELY NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED, SOMEONE IS GOING TO WRECK AND DIE FROM THIS IF THEY HAVEN'T ALREADY.
DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY, LET OFF THE GAS THOUGH KEPT ACCELERATING, BRAKED AS HARD AS POSSIBLE WITHOUT ANY EFFECT, SHIFTED TO NEUTRAL AND CONTINUED TO ACCELERATE
THE SHIFT STICK WAS LOOSE AND WOULD MOVE IN ANY DIRECTION. IF THE CAR WAS DRIVING ON D AND SOMEONE WAS TO TAP THE STICK SHIFT SLIGHTLY UP OR DOWN, THE STICK WOULD MOVE EVEN WHEN THE CAR WAS IN MOTION AND BRAKES WERE NOT PRESSED. ANY MAJOR BUMPS WOULD CAUSE THE SHIFT TO MOVE LOOSELY FROM ITS PROPER PLACE AS WELL.
MY TOYOTA SIENNA HAS 80,000 MILES AND HAS GEAR HUNTING, WHEN I GO ON A SPEED BUMP IT SURGES AND HESITATES, I DON'T FEEL SAFE AT ALL. I'VE PREVIOUSLY OWNED OTHER TOYOTA'S WITH PROBLEMS NOT LIKE THIS. PLEASE HELP. I LOVE TOYOTA, BUT I VALUE SAFETY.

SHIFT GEAR STUCK IN NEUTRAL MODE FOR TOYOTA SIENNA 2005. DRIVING SIENNA OUT OF MY GARAGE IN REVERSE, THEN STEPPED ON BRAKE--TO PROCEED TO MOVE GEAR TO DRIVE MODE. THEN VAN GOT STUCK IN NEUTRAL MODE. ATTEMPTED TO MOVE SHIFT LEVER ALL THE WAY BACK TO P TO GET OUT OF N MODE, AND NOTHING HAPPENED. LIGHT STAYS ON "N" POSITION. LOOKED AT VEHICLE MANUAL TO FOLLOW DIRECTIONS IE. IF CAN'T SHIFT AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION LEVER... IGNITION KEY TO LOCK, PARK BRAKE ON. PUSH DOWN SHIFT LOCK OVERRIDE BUTTON. SHIFT OUT OF P POSITION ONLY WHILE USING A BUTTON. SHIFT TO "N" POSITION, START ENGINE WHILE KEEPING BRAKE PEDAL DEPRESSED. WILL HAVE TO HAVE VAN TOWED TO TOYOTA DEALER. THIS HAPPENED AT HOME IN THE DRIVEWAY OUTSIDE OF THE GARAGE. I WAS REVERSING OUT OF THE GARAGE TO DRIVE OUT OF THE DRIVEWAY TO ROAD.. I WILL NEED TO CONTACT TOYOTA FOR AN APPOINTMENT FIRST AND HIRE A TOW COMPANY TO DELIVER TO TOYOTA DEALER. ALSO, WHEN ENGINE IS TURNED ON AND STEPPING ON CAR BRAKE, SHIFT LEVER MOVES TO P, R, N ,D, AND LOWER GEARS BUT IS PERMANENTLY STUCK IN "N" MODE IS MY BEST EXPLANATION. FORTUNATELY, THIS INCIDENT OCCURRED AT HOME AND NOT ON THE ROAD, HIGHWAY OR OTHER AREA OF TRAFFIC. I CAN ONLY ASSUME SOME KIND OF CABLE/MECHANISM BROKE. BOTTON LINE, GEAR WON'T GET OUT OF NEUTRAL MODE, EVEN WITH STEPS AS NOTED FROM VEHICLE MANUAL.
THE GEAR SHIFT LEVER ON OUR 2005 TOYOTA SIENNA BECAME LOOSE AND WOBBLY. THE VEHICLE WAS IN PARK AND MY WIFE SHIFTED INTO REVERSE. SHE HEARD A NOISE LIKE SOMETHING HAD BROKEN AND FALLEN TO THE FLOOR BEHIND THE GEAR SHIFT LEVER. THE LEVER WAS LOOSE AND WOBBLY AFTER THAT. THE DEALER SAID THERE WAS NO RECALL FOR OUR PARTICULAR SIENNA.
I DIDN'T KNOW THE CAR WAS GOING TO BE RECALLED.

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO CITY TOYOTA (255 SAN PEDRO ROAD, DALY CITY, CA 94014) WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE GEAR SHIFT FAILED AND NEEDED TO BE REPAIRED. THE VIN WAS INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 13V429000 (POWER TRAIN). THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER STATED THAT THE PART NEEDED FOR REPAIRS WAS NOT COVERED UNDER THE PRESENT RECALL. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 152,000.

THE CONTACT STATED THAT SHE ATTEMPTED TO DEPRESS THE EMERGENCY BRAKE PEDAL WHILE SLOWLY RUNNING WITH THE VEHICLE BUT FAILED TO STOP THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT STATED WAS ABLE TO TURN THE STEERING WHEEL TO THE LEFT HITTING TWO BOULDERS AND A FENCE, THEN COMING TO A STOP. THE CONTACT STATED SUSTAINED BRUISING TO HER LEGS AND BACK INJURIES WHICH REQUIRED MEDICAL ATTENTION 3 DAYS LATER. A POLICE REPORT WAS NOT FILED. THE VEHICLE WAS DRIVEN BACK TO THE CONTACT'S HOME AND TOWED A WEEK LATER TO TOYOTA OF POWAY LOCATED AT 13631 POWAY RD, POWAY, CA 92064(858) 486-2900. THE CONTACT MENTIONED AFTER THE FAILURE, SHE RESEARCHED AND FOUND NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 13V429000 (POWER TRAIN).THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE AND A CASE WAS OPENED AS WELL AS A TOYOTA FIELD TECHNICAL SPECIALIST WAS SENT TO THE DEALER TO DETERMINE THE FAILURE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT SHE WAS INFORMED BY THE MANUFACTURER THAT "NO ABNORMALITIES WERE FOUND WITH THE GEAR LEVER AND SHIFT CABLE". THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 250,000.
THIS REPORT INCLUDES TWO SEPARATE SAFETY ISSUES. FIRST ISSUE: AFTER BACKING OUT OF MY DRIVEWAY ONTO MY STREET, MY CAR WOULD NOT SHIFT INTO DRIVE GEAR FROM REVERSE. THE ENGINE WOULD NOT RESTART AFTER TURNING THE KEY OFF SINCE IT WAS STILL IN REVERSE, EVEN THOUGH THE LEVER WAS SHIFTED BACK TO PARK. THANKFULLY, I DON'T LIVE ON A BUSY STREET AND THERE HAPPENED TO BE A FEW LINEMEN DOING WORK THAT WERE ABLE TO PUSH THE VAN BACK INTO MY DRIVEWAY. WITH TWO YOUNG CHILDREN IN THE CAR AND NOT BEING ABLE TO PUSH THE VAN ON MY OWN, THIS COULD'VE BEEN A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION IN A BUSY LOCATION. AFTER DISASSEMBLING THE DASH, MY HUSBAND DISCOVERED THE MECHANISM IN THE GEAR SHIFT HAD MALFUNCTIONED AND WAS ABLE TO REPAIR IT HIMSELF INSTEAD OF TOWING IT TO A TOYOTA DEALER FOR PRICEY REPAIRS AND TOWING FEES. SECOND ISSUE: ON MULTIPLE OCCASIONS (USUALLY, BUT NOT ALWAYS, WHILE ACCELERATING ONTO A HIGHWAY ON-RAMP) THE TRACTION CONTROL LIGHT WILL ILLUMINATE, A REPETITIVE BEEPING WILL SOUND, AND THE STEERING WHEEL VIBRATES AND BECOMES DIFFICULT TO CONTROL SINCE IT FREEZES UP. THIS HAS HAPPENED ON DRY ROADS AND SMOOTH DRIVING CONDITIONS ONLY WHEN NO TRACTION CONTROL IS NEEDED. EACH TIME IS HAPPENS IT IS A STRESSFUL EXPERIENCE SINCE IT COULD BE LEAD TO AN ACCIDENT DUE TO LACK OF CONTROL. AFTER CALLING A TOYOTA SERVICE CENTER TO INQUIRE IF THERE ARE ANY KNOWN ISSUES OF THIS, THEY DENY IT. UPON DOING OUR OWN RESEARCH, WE WERE ABLE TO DISCOVER OTHER PEOPLE WITH THE SAME ISSUE. A VERY SIMILAR REPLICATION OF OUR SITUATION IS SHOWN IN THIS VIDEO. THE ONLY DIFFERENCE IS THAT OURS DOESN'T HAPPEN AS OFTEN IN ONE DRIVE. THE DOOR CHECK WAS REPLACED BY TOYOTA FOR PREVIOUS OWNER.THE DOOR WELDS ARE BROKE AND POPS AND THE DOOR CHECK HAS BROKEN PLASTIC.TOYOTA REPLACED THE SPARK PLUGS, BUT JUST THE FRONT. FRONT WERE DENSO AND BACK WERE NGK. LOCAL DEALER SAYS THEY DO NOT MIX PLUGS. LOCAL DEALER SAYS THEY WILL INSPECT THE SHIFTER AND LEAVE IT WHEN THE RECALL SAYS THEY WILL REPLACE IT. ON THE DASH , IT WAS ALSO FIXED BY THE DEALER BECAUSE IT MELTED. I WAS TOLD BY LOCAL DEALER I HAD UNTIL 2024 TO GET IT FIXED WHEN ACTUALLY IT GOES OUT IN 2017. I AM BEING MISLED ON PURPOSE SO THEY DO NOT HAVE TO FIX THEIR PROBLEMS. NO ONE IS WATCHING THEM AND LETTING THEM DO WHAT EVER THEY WANT NO MATTER YOU SPEND OVER $40,000 PLUS FOR THEIR TRASH THEY WILL NOT STAND BEHIND. IF THEIR IS A FACTORY DEFECT IT SHOULD BE AN AUTOMATIC RECALL BECAUSE THEY CANNOT BE TRUSTED TO DO THE RIGHT THING. LETS WAKE UP AND HELP THE PEOPLE BEING TAKEN ADVANTAGE OF. MY 5 YR OLD DAUGHTER WAS SITTING IN THE DRIVER'S SEAT AND MY ALMOST 10 YR OLD SON WAS SITTING IN THE PASSENGER SEAT. I WAS STANDING RIGHT NEXT TO THE DRIVER'S SEAT INSIDE THE OPEN DOOR, THE CAR WAS PARKED IN MY DRIVEWAY. MY SON FOR SOME REASON DECIDED TO SHIFT THE CAR OUT OF PARK. THIS IS A DEFECT IN THE SHIFT LOCK SOLENOID THAT WAS RECALLED. WHILE DRIVING WEST IN I-88 IN NEW YORK, BETWEEN EXITS 1 AND 2, OUR REAR END COMPLETELY LOCKED UP. WE WERE ABLE TO GET THE CAR ONTO THE SHOULDER, BUT IN DOING SO, WE HIT THE CONCRETE WALL CAUSING SOME BODY DAMAGE. *TR
TOYOTA SIENNA LE VAN WAS PLACED IN PARK, TURNED OFF AND KEYS REMOVED. THE GEAR SHIFT WAS ABLE TO BE MOVED OUT OF THE PARK POSITION INTO DRIVE BY A 7 YEAR OLD CHILD. AFTER A QUICK GOOGLE SEARCH, I DISCOVERED A VIDEO POSTED BY ANOTHER TOYOTA SIENNA OWNER WHICH DEMONSTRATED IF YOU GENTLY WIGGLE THE GEAR SHIFT, IT WILL EASILY MOVE INTO ANY GEAR, WITH NO KEYS OR PEDALS PRESSED. I CAN RECREATE THE ISSUE EVERY TIME. SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE AND I WANT TO PREVENT THE INJURY OR WORSE TO ANOTHER CHILD. I HAVE AN OPEN CASE WITH TOYOTA, HOWEVER AWAITING THEIR INSPECTION/ RESPONSE.
OUR 2005 TOYOTA SIENNA TOOK OFF ON US IN RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC. MOVING MY FOOT TO THE BRAKE AND MY HUSBAND SHIFTING INTO NEUTRAL WAS THE FIRST THING WE TRIED, WE ALSO TRIED PARK AND REVERSE, AND TURNING OFF THE CRUISE CONTROL, NONE OF WHICH WORKED. THE TOYOTA SIENNA DEATH TRAP CONTINUED TO ACCELERATE RAPIDLY EVEN THOUGH MY FOOT WAS JAMMED ON THE BRAKE (I DIDN'T REMOVE MY FOOT FROM THE BRAKE FOR ANOTHER 2 1/2 HRS UNTIL THE TOW TRUCK PULLED IN FRONT OF US. BY THE WAY, WHEN YOUR VEHICLE IS SUDDENLY TRAVELING MUCH, MUCH FASTER THAN ANYONE ELSE'S VEHICLE ON THE ROAD, IT'S ALL YOU CAN DO TO NOT HIT SOMEONE. BELIEVE ME, I WAS SUDDENLY SWERVING IN AND OUT OF THE LANES AND CUTTING EVERYONE OFF. THE ONLY THING THAT STOPPED OUR TOYOTA DEATH TRAP WAS PULLING THE KEY FROM THE IGNITION, CERTAINLY NOT IDEAL IN RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC. WHILE THIS WAS GOING ON, OUR SON WAS IN THE BACKSEAT CALLING 911, WHILE OUR DAUGHTER CRIED. WE DON'T HAVE A LAWYER AND TOYOTA WON'T FIX OUR VAN. WHAT ARE WE SUPPOSED TO DO WITH IT? *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 TOYOTA SIENNA. THE CONTACT TURNED THE IGNITION OFF, AND THE GEAR SELECTOR WAS SHIFTED INTO THE PARK POSITION. SUDDENLY, THE VEHICLE LUNGED FORWARD WITHOUT WARNING. WHEN PRESSURE WAS APPLIED TO THE BRAKE PEDAL THERE WAS NO POWER RESPONSE. WHEN THE EMERGENCY BRAKE WAS ENGAGED, THE VEHICLE CAME TO A STOP. THE CONTACT INSPECTED THE VEHICLE AND DETECTED THAT THE GEAR SHIFT CABLE HAD DISENGAGED, POSSIBLY WHEN ENCOUNTERING A BUMP IN THE ROAD. THE MANUFACTURER AND AN AUTHORIZED DEALER WERE NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. IN ADDITION, THE SPEEDOMETER WOULD DISPLAY AN INACCURATE READING AT VARIOUS SPEEDS. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN REPAIRED WHEN THE COMPLAINT WAS FILED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 114,000. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE.

AS WE EXITED THE DEALERSHIP AFTER PURCHASING THE 2005 TOYOTA SIENNA VAN, THE TRANSMISSION SEEMED TO SLIP AS IT DOWNSHIFTED INTO A SLOW TURN. THIS HAPPENED SO MANY TIMES WITH VARIOUS DRIVERS THAT WE CONTACTED THE DEALER. SOME FIVE TRIPS AND WEEKS WITHOUT OUR VEHICLE, THE DEALER COULDN'T FIX IT. THEY ALSO EXPERIENCED THE PROBLEM AND WOULD CONTACT THE TOYOTA REP. MORE VISITS AND CALLS AND NO REPAIR. THE DEALER SAID THE TRANSMISSION WAS GETTING USED TO THE PRIMARY DRIVER. DEALER SEEMED TO DOUBT OUR CREDIBILITY, BUT HAS AGREED TO EITHER FIX IT OR "CONVINCE US THAT THIS IS THE WAY A 2005 SIENNA VAN DRIVES." AFTER READING THE NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS JUST LIKE OURS, I DOUBT THAT TOYOTA CAN FIX THIS. COMPUTER WAS REPROGRAMMED AND FLUID CHANGED--MADE IT WORSE. WE GIVE UP. WE NOTE THAT THE 2006 SIENNA HAS NOT RECEIVED ANY COMPLAINTS LIKE THIS. *NM
WHEN ACCELERATING FROM 5-10 MPH, VAN HESITATES AND THEN JERKS FORWARD TRYING TO FIND CORRECT GEAR OR CATCH UP. THIS IS ESPECIALLY DANGEROUS ON SNOW/ICE. TOOK TO LOCAL DEALER 3 TIMES AND WAS TOLD ALL OF TOYOTA'S 5-SPEED TRANSMISSIONS DO THIS AND MY SIENNA WASN'T AS BAD AS OTHERS. THE DEALERSHIP DID REPROGRAM COMPUTER AND I COULD TELL NO DIFFERENCE. I WAS TOLD THERE WAS NOTHING ELSE THEY COULD OR /WOULD DO. I COMPLAINED TO TOYOTA HEADQUARTERS AND STILL GOT NOWHERE. *JB
ON MY 2005 SIENNA XLE LIMITED AWD, I HAVE NOTICED AT 50+ MILES AN HOUR INTERSTATE OR EVEN DOWNHILL) THAT THE CAR FEELS LIKE THERE IS EXCESSIVE ROLLING RESISTANCE, AND IF I DON;T ACCELERATE, VERY SOON IT DOWNSHIFTS (HAVE NOTICED THIS EVEN ON A DOWNHILL SLOPE AT 45 MILES A HOUR). SERVICE ADVISOR SAID ALL TOYOTA CARS AS DESIGNED TO DOWNSHIFT AS SOON AS YOU TAKE YOUR FOOT FROM THE PEDAL (SOMETHING WHICH SOUNDS VERY STRANGE TO ME, SINCE I'M DRIVING OTHER MAKES AND MODELS AS WELL). SEEMS THE TRANSMISSION IS NOT TUNED WELL. ON A SEPARATE MATTER, I NOTICED SEVERAL TIMES THAT THE CAR HESITATES TO ACCELERATE FOR A FEW SECONDS WHEN I PUSH THE ACCELERATOR A BIT HARDER AT VERY LOW SPEEDS, SUCH AS WHEN I NEED TO MERGE INTO HEAVY TRAFFIC FROM A SIDE ROAD. IT ALSO HAPPENED WHEN I NEEDED TO CHANGE THE LANES FROM A VERY SLOW MOVING LANE TO ONE WHERE I NEEDED TO ACCELERATE RAPIDLY. AGAIN, SOMETHING FEELS WRONG ABOUT THE TRANSMISSION. *NM

ALTHOUGH THE GEARSHIFT WAS NOT VISIBLY SEEN CHANGING GEARS, THE VEHICLE WAS PHYSICALLY FELT SHIFTING DOWN AND LOOSING MOMENTUM. THE VEHICLE WAS SEEN BY THE LOCAL DEALER. THE DEALER REPROGRAMMED THE COMPUTER, BUT THE PROBLEM PERSISTED. THE DEALER WAS UNABLE TO DETERMINE HOW TO REMEDY THE PROBLEM.

WE HAVE RECENTLY PURCHASED A 2005 TOYOTA SIENNA, LOVE THE VEHICLE, BUT DISCOVERED A POTENTIAL SAFETY PROBLEM. THE GEAR SHIFT LEVER CAN BE ACCIDENTALLY EASILY KNOCKED FROM 4TH GEAR( NOT IN OVERDRIVE) STRAIGHT INTO REVERSE. MY DEALERS SERVICE DEPT.
