Open Safety Recalls (3)
NHTSA Campaign: 19V503000
Component: EQUIPMENT:OTHER:LABELS
Southeast Toyota Distributors, LLC (SET) is recalling certain 2017-2019 Toyota Camry, Corolla, Rav4, Sienna, and Yaris iA vehicles equipped with factory-installed floor mats. The load carrying capacity modification label may be incorrect. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 110, "Tire Selection and Rims."
Risk: An incorrect label may lead to unintentionally overloading the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
Fix: SET will notify owners and provide a corrected label for placement over the inaccurate label, free of charge. The recall began August 23, 2019. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-888-270-9371. SET's number for this recall is SET19A.
NHTSA Campaign: 17V295000
Component: TIRES:TEMPORARY/EMERGENCY SPARE TIRE
Gulf States Toyota, Inc. (Gulf States) is recalling certain 2017 4Runner , 86, Avalon, Camry, Camry Hybrid, Corolla, Corolla iM, Highlander, Highlander Hybrid, Prius, Prius C, RAV4, RAV4 Hybrid, Sienna and Yaris vehicles. The spare tire air pressure was not adjusted to the proper pressure as stated on the Tire Pressure Label.
Risk: A spare tire that is not inflated to the proper value may not perform as intended, increasing the risk of a crash.
Fix: Gulf States will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the spare tires, adjusting their pressure as necessary, free of charge. The recall began June 15, 2017. Owners may contact Gulf States customer service at 1-800-444-1074. Toyota's number for this recall is 17R2.
NHTSA Campaign: 23V734000
Component: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:12V/24V/48V BATTERY
Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2013-2018 RAV4 vehicles. Certain replacement 12-volt batteries may not fit properly in the battery tray, allowing the battery to move and contact the hold-down bracket, possibly causing a short circuit.
Risk: A battery short circuit increases the risk of a fire.
Fix: Dealers will replace the battery clamp sub-assembly, battery tray, and positive terminal cover, free of charge. Owner letters were mailed December 27, 2024, to 2013-2014 RAV4 owners. Additional owner notification letters will be mailed in phases, phase 2 will begin on May 14, 2025, and phase 3 in late July 2025. Owners may contact Toyota's customer service at 1-800-331-4331. Toyota's numbers for this recall are 23TB13 and 23TA13.

Electrical System →7 issues
Your car caught fire while your granddaughter was driving it, with smoke first appearing under the hood before flames engulfed the front of the vehicle. The fire was extinguished by firefighters, but the car was deemed a total loss and towed away. You received a recall notice (NHTSA Campaign 23V734000 for the electrical system) the day after the fire occurred, suggesting an electrical malfunction may have caused the ignition.

You purchased a 2017 Toyota RAV4 from a dealer that showed 85,887 miles at purchase, but when you registered the vehicle, you discovered the actual mileage was 237,660 miles — a significant discrepancy suggesting the odometer may have been tampered with. This is a case of potential odometer fraud. You may need to contact your state's attorney general or consumer protection agency and work with the dealer to address this misrepresentation.

Your 2017 RAV4 is experiencing a battery drain issue where the battery loses power during startup, causing the check engine light to come on. This is related to a known recall (Campaign 23V734000), but your dealer says the replacement parts aren't available yet. Your battery was replaced at AutoZone as a temporary fix, but the underlying electrical problem remains unrepaired. The manufacturer has instructed you to try another dealer once parts become available.

Your 2017 RAV4 failed to start while parked, but restarting worked after you removed and reinstalled the battery terminal. When you took it to the dealer for the recall repair (Campaign 23V734000), they discovered a bulge on the side of the battery and refused to complete the work, telling you to visit the original dealership instead. The vehicle was never repaired. A replacement battery and battery terminal may be needed to resolve the starting issue.

Unknown Or Other →3 issues
Your 2017 RAV4 caught fire while parked and turned off, with flames starting in the engine compartment battery area and spreading rapidly until the fire department extinguished it — the vehicle was a total loss. There were no warning signs, unusual smells, or performance issues before the fire occurred. Your vehicle's VIN matches an open recall related to potential fire risk, which may be connected to this incident. Determining the exact cause will require a thorough inspection by Toyota and NHTSA investigators.

Your RAV4's rear lift hatch won't lower smoothly—it may drop a few inches, stop, and reverse back up, forcing you to restart the process repeatedly. This creates a safety hazard if someone gets caught underneath during its unpredictable motions, and it's unsafe to drive if the hatch doesn't fully lower and latch. Your Toyota dealer says the fix requires replacing internal components at a cost of $1,200–$1,300.

Both of the hinges on your trunk's liftgate have bent, preventing the trunk from opening. This appears to be a known issue with multiple vehicles, and there's ongoing litigation about it. The problem was confirmed during a dealership inspection, and there were no warning signs before it occurred. Fixing this will likely require replacing the bent hinges.

Forward Collision Avoidance →2 issues
Your car's Pre-Collision System (PCS) has engaged unexpectedly twice—once when a small branch fell on the dirt road, and once while your dog was in the car, which resulted in injury. In both cases, you felt the braking was unnecessary and prevented you from avoiding the hazard safely through steering alone. The system can be manually disabled through the menu, but it automatically reactivates each time you restart the car, which is inconvenient and concerning. Fixing this will likely require a software reprogram or diagnostic check by Toyota to prevent unintended brake engagement.

Your Adaptive Cruise Control system loses track of the car ahead when you're turning, even slightly, causing it to suddenly accelerate and then harshly brake when it picks up the car again. This jerking motion reduces your confidence in the system, and on at least one occasion at 45 mph on a gentle curve, the ACC accelerated toward the car in front of you as if it wasn't there, forcing you to take over manually to avoid a crash. This problem happens repeatedly and seems to be related to how the system detects vehicles while cornering. The fix will likely require a software update or recalibration of the forward collision avoidance sensors.

Structure,unknown Or Other,engine →1 issue
Your car caught fire in a parking lot approximately 30 minutes after being parked, with the fire originating near the battery area. This is a serious safety hazard that requires immediate investigation by a qualified technician. The repair will likely involve a complete electrical system inspection and battery replacement or repair.

Vehicle Speed Control →1 issue
Your car may have experienced sudden unintended acceleration after hitting a curb while entering a parking lot. The driver was unable to stop the vehicle despite applying brakes, and the car accelerated on its own, causing a serious accident that resulted in the vehicle flipping and being totaled. The incident suggests a potential electronic throttle or accelerator control malfunction that needs investigation through the vehicle's event data recorder.

Electrical System, vehicle Speed Control, forward Collision Avoidance →1 issue
While driving uphill on the highway with cruise control set at 65 mph, your vehicle suddenly slowed down with a clunk sound, and the engine got louder as cruise control tried to restore speed. You had to tap the brake and manually accelerate to resume normal driving. After parking, the check engine light came on and cruise control stopped working. Two days later, your car wouldn't start reliably, then failed to start completely. A dealership found an internal electrical short in the multiplex ECU (the main computer that controls multiple systems), which caused abnormal current drain. The issue is intermittent and creates a safety risk because it can happen without warning while driving. Fixing this will likely require replacing the multiplex ECU or repairing the internal short circuit.

Service Brakes →1 issue
Your brake system isn't providing normal stopping power, even after you had the brake pads and rotors replaced in July 2025. This is a serious safety issue that suggests there may be a deeper problem with your braking system beyond just worn pads and rotors. A mechanic will need to inspect the brake master cylinder, brake lines, and hydraulic fluid to identify what's preventing your brakes from working properly.

Steering,power Train,unknown Or Other →1 issue
While driving on a highway exit ramp, an unresolved recall issue caused damage to your battery connections, making your vehicle completely shut off while you were driving. You nearly lost control of the car, but it restarted and you were able to reach safety. The towing and repair costs were directly caused by the open recall, which had gone unaddressed for over 3 years. The repair may involve inspecting and replacing damaged battery terminals, cables, or related electrical connections affected by the recall.

Steering →1 issue
Your car's electric power steering (EPS) warning light keeps coming on, and when it does, your steering wheel becomes difficult or impossible to turn—creating a dangerous driving situation. The dealer has replaced the EPS computer and the negative terminal voltage sensor, but the problem has returned multiple times since November 2024. The issue may require additional diagnosis of the power steering electrical system or replacement of other steering components.

Insert, Padding →1 issue
The foam head support on your child's car seat detached from the plastic casing due to the glue failing, even though the seat wasn't involved in an accident or damaged by any user actions. This is a safety concern since the head support won't properly protect your child in a crash. The fix will likely involve regluing the foam to the casing or replacing the entire head insert assembly.
